Who doesn't love donuts/doughnuts/do-nuts?! We were in the area & decided to get donuts for a late breakfast. We stopped in a little before 11am & didn't find a huge selection, mainly because we weren't in prime time I guess. The store is rather small, they've got a couple tables for dining inside, but we got ours to go. They've got a 5 dollar minimum to run a card for debit/credit payments. We ordered 5 different donuts to try, & made it just over the 5 dollar mark. We ordered a blueberry, cinnamon sugar, icing & sprinkles, a cinnamon roll and a cinnamon bear claw. I really liked the cinnamon roll, it was a standard cinnamon roll but I liked that. The cinnamon bear claw was good, but next time we will just stick to the cinnamon roll, because they were so similar. The blueberry was moist and fresh, the blueberries in them I'd guess are those little blueberry flavored pellets that can sometimes taste a little fake. I loved the icing & sprinkle one, it's super rich & I was glad that I only had half of it. The sadness came with the cinnamon sugar donut. "Don't believe the hype" -Public Enemy. Shipley serves up very plain, boring donuts (and hardly anything else). It's the kind of place you stop by for a dozen cheap treats for the office, but would otherwise drive right by. They sorta have coffee (the terrible 24-hr diner variety). The selection is poor. The staff aren't particularly friendly, helpful. It's certainly not a place to sit and enjoy. In an amazing city like Nashville, I expect more! Do yourself a favor and find one of the national chain donut shops. read more

Tried Shipley's Do-nuts for the first time today and I was certainly not disappointed! I was able to try a couple different flavors (though to be honest, it was hard to stop at two). I tried the glazed blueberry and glazed chocolate, both of which were mouthwateringly tasty. The texture was moist, flavors were excellent, and neither of the flavors were exceptionally heavy. I'm looking forward to trying more flavors in the future, but for now, I recommend them to anyone looking for a tasty treat or pick-me-up :) read more

Solid classic donuts freshly prepared and it takes me back in time. And so freaking affordable! Although I support the trend these days to make doughnuts fancy with a 100 layers or topped with ooo-la-la toppings, My first love is the basic, humble, classic chocolate iced doughnut. Sure, I like going to Five Daughters (aka Five Dollars due to price) and have one near my house but I drive 30 minutes each way to this location of Shipley Doughnuts. Of the many doughnuts offered here, I've had the chocolate iced which is not overly sweet. The doughnut is simply topped with a perfectly textured chocolate icing. The actual doughnut is not covered in a sugary glaze before being iced which is perfect for me. I love it. It's also super nostalgic for me taking me back to my childhood when going to the donut shop was a rare treat. I've also had another nostalgic donut, the old fashioned...chocolate iced and plain. I've also had the cake doughnuts...blueberry and strawberry. All of these were perfectly cooked texture and being moist I've shared all of the other donuts with my friends and neighbors and they love the knots, fruit filled, cream filled, cinnamon swirls, and apple fritters. I've like all those as they are well made and classic. The Kolaches are solid. They are the best ones that I've had in Nashville. Yes, even better than the ones made in East Nashville or should I say Yeast Nashville? One, the dough is seriously fluffy and light in texture but perfectly buttery sweet like a decadent brioche bun. The sausage is juicy without making the bread soggy. The smokiness is the sausage is prominent without being overpowering. Because I associate the Kolach with my travels around Texas, I've only ordered the Jalapeño Cheese puffy bundle of goodness. The dough and sausage are joined with just the right amount of American Cheese, mild and creamy without any gumminess. The jalapeño distinction is given due to their is a slice or two of pickled jalapeño hiding in kolach. It's not until you get close to biting it or very close to it that the heat is the pepper manifests. The tartness of the pickling brine is a treat as it cuts through the buttery love that is the kolache. The customer service counter reminds me of the old time classic donut shops that's a bit harried because the people are multitasking. First of all, the entire counter is where you order. More modern quick-serve methods of one line, one order taker makes for a simple way to order but it takes longer. The full counter method requires the customer to pay attention to which order taker is saying, "I'll take the next person" from the group of customers spread out looking at the donuts. This old school method is quick and doesn't get bogged down by people still deciding versus ordering in a first come first served manner. It's a great ordering system but makes the those conditioned by a single corral method a bit confused. LOL. Pro Tip, when an employee says, "I'll take the next person" they may also be restocking paper bags, boxes, and not make eye contact. Just start calling out your order. They may take 3 seconds to finish some other task but then start filling your box or bag...without eye contact. I think it's just a nuance of a different cultural background from mine, but now that I've cracked the code it's great. The kitchen team is hard at work in the open kitchen. Watching them hustle and pushing out fresh donuts is awesome. And just like back in the day, you may have to wait on your favorite item because someone else got the last one. It's called fresh food and be patient. I've noticed other reviewers complaining about this to which I say "chill out" and if you want it when you want it then stop at Mapco and get a Little Debbie. Besides, it's obvious the staff here is hustling to make FRESH offerings all morning long and that is actually putting customers first. Our current society's obsession with instant gratification and entitled attitude sucks. And, frankly, some of the disappointment by having to occasionally wait for fresh food is also fueled by possible micro issues of some feeling superior over others. I'm so glad this clean store is producing solid classic doughnuts, I just wish it was closer to me! read more

Another gem we found on our recent vacation! Shipley Donuts was one of my favorites as a kid in Baton Rouge. I was so excited to get to share one of my favorite childhood places with my family! The donuts were very it as great as the ones we had as a kid! Light, fluffy little donut holes, amazing chocolate covered donuts and all at a very reasonable price. There is nothing better than getting a dozen hot donut holes for LESS than $2!!! Nashville you are so lucky to have this little hole in the wall shop! If you are looking for a place where you can buy hot donuts then Shipleys is the best. We love hot donuts and If you ask Shipleys they give you hot, out of the fryer donuts. We got a dozen and boy these donuts are so soft, melt in your mouth. Now these are best eaten the same day, usually to me they don't taste that great if you leave them for the next day. I've been wanting to try Shipley in Nashville for a while and we finally got to do so this past weekend. The service and selection are great and the donuts are the best I've had in Nashville so far (I find Krispy Kreme too sweet and Duncan donuts too dry/bland). Parking is free but extremely limited and the hours are short as well (something like 5am to 1pm) but otherwise this is one of the best places in Nashville to get your donut fix. They were out of chocolate glazed when we went, but they gave us a free bow tie to try instead. We tried the regular glazed, lemon filled bizmarks, and chocolate cake donuts and they were all delicious. read more

I was in the area and needed a quick bite. Why not sugar rush myself before a big meeting, right? I wanted to get white milk and two donuts.... They have all but white milk. Sorry, not a strawberry or chocolate milk fan. No, I do not want juice or coffee. I order three donuts... Maple bacon eclair for a coworker, sourcream cake and chocolate cream for me. I get the first donut ordered but the waitress taking my order stops and answers the phone before I can't spit out the rest of my order then hand motions the other cashier to finish my order. Note, no washing and and no gloves between taking cash and getting my food. My total was $3.36 for 2 donuts. I have to spend at least $4.50 before they will accept my card. I have no cash with me. No sign announcing this. I have waited in line and while being helped because the counter girl answered the phone during my order. I keep an emergency $100 folded in the back of my wallet. I pull it out and they do not have enough change. At this point I'm like shove the donuts up your ass and take some customer service lessons.
