I recently requested a quote from Bailey & Shipp Electric to install two ceiling fans in my spare bedrooms. I was quoted $4,500, which was attributed to the rooms having vaulted ceilings. While I've had four previous jobs completed by Bailey & Shipp--including a ceiling-fan installation in my master bedroom--with exceptional results each time, this price was far beyond reasonable expectations. To compare, I obtained a separate quote from another company for $880 for the same work. Unfortunately, the drastic discrepancy means Bailey & Shipp has lost my business. They came out and diagnosed the problem with my generator. Apparently a part was destroyed by a power surge. It did take several months for the part to arrive but they installed it once it arrived and they did it's yearly maintenance. I realized after talking with them that several things in my house were destroyed by a power surge so now I'm going to contact my electric supplier to have them check out the transformer and get my electrician to install a whole house surge protector. We got a notice that the electrical box in our new construction home could pose a possible fire hazard. Of course, I immediately called the number provided on the notice and we were routed to Bailey & Shipp Electric. We had to wait over a month before anyone could come out (not surprising as the notice went out to our entire neighborhood and another new community not far from ours). Dan came today and was FANTASTIC and super nice! He showed me exactly what the issue was (fortunately, our box was not an affected one) and made to sure to mark the screws so that if there was any movement, we'd know. Needed our smoke detectors replaced like yesterday. Played phone tag with Bob but got a technician out in a few days. Now we have smoke & carbon monoxide combo detectors on each floor and all other smoke detectors replaced quickly. The technician tested them all and I paid the price I was quoted. I recently used their emergency services because two of my fuses were tripped after I replaced a light switch and I was worried it could trip other fuses or cause an electrical fire due to a problem that I created. I called their emergency services line, explained the situation to the hotline specialist, and they immediately sent out an electrician who was able to diagnose and remediate the problem in 20 minutes. The work that Matt and Hugo performed on the electrical system of my house was nothing short of brilliant! It had become essential to remove the residual old-style knob and tube wiring in my 100-year old house in order to maintain access to a good home insurance policy here in Maryland, and any doubts I had about the possibility of achieving that goal (a very complicated task per the review of the house by other electricians) were completely dispelled by the time this Bailey and Shipp team finished their work. Matt was enthusiastic about showing me the steps he was taking to visualize the knob and tube feeder system joining the modern wiring at the receptacles and switches, which included everything from him slinking into the space under the 2nd floor eaves to pinpoint lines passing up the wall toward the attic and crawling into the tiny attic space in order to remove them, to mapping out the lines partially hidden by wood veneer ceiling panels in the basement and finding their junction panel covered by paint in a first floor wall. To say that it was a 3-dimensional maize would be an understatement, but Matt figured it out (even mulling it through overnight prior to the second day, I kid you not) and Hugo provided the necessary rewiring to get the electrical system up and running again without marring any of my plaster walls. Finally he showed up at 5:00 PM and I told him that I all ready moved on since I did not hear from anyone 3 hours after my appointment for an estimate. The rep insisted I should have called him since he had such a long drive to get to my house. I then said, He should of called me to say he was running late. Not the other way around. After that he started to berated me and became extremely rude. NO WAY WOULD I WANT SOMEONE LIKE THIS DOING WORK IN MY HOUSE. read more

Contracted to replace electric panel, replace a dryer outlet, add an outlet and remove an outlet. Initial work was passable - the order of the breakers did not meet the needs for solar, the outlet that was supposed to be removed was still in place and connected, the new outlet installed didn't match the amps on the circuit breaker, and the labeling of the breakers was poorly done. Then it fails inspection due to not meeting codes that had been in place with the county at least 7 months prior to the estimate. B& S hit us with a $900 additional cost. The county was clear about contacting their consumer advocate office because we had this additional surprise cost that was not cautioned in our initial estimate. In any case, they come back to finish, put the solar in the right place, match the outlet to the circuit break amps but damned if they didn't absolutely refuse to remove the old outlet. Begrudgingly, they disconnected it from the panel but it was simply beyond their interest/concern to remove the outlet as requested. Overall: passable work, unhelpful - if you're thinking of signing a contract with them, think about how much do you want to spend for that?? read more

I called Bailey & Shipp Electric to have a Ring Doorbell and Ring Floodlight installed. They seemed very knowledgeable and quoted reasonable rates so I selected them to do the work and told the other contractors that I had contacted that I would not be using them. I got a call from Bailey and Shipp the day before the scheduled service and was asked if I could change my service window from the morning to the afternoon which I agreed to. However, on the scheduled day, no one showed up and no one called. Now I have to start the whole process over searching for another company. Bailey & Shipp showed no respect for a customer's time or opinion. The only reason I gave them 2 stars instead of one is that I was given good advice during my initial call to them. read more

The service technicians from Bailey & Shipp Electric completed the electrical work well and were very clean and courteous. However, of the 4 recessed lights we had installed, one had a problem. The technician ended up cutting a hole in our ceiling than was much larger than was needed for the size of the light. There is now a hole in our ceiling that extends out the side of the light and up into our attic. I monitored the guys work and the damage took place essentially because on the install of this particular recess light, he shoved the insert forcefully which caused the break in drywall. I witnessed the damage real time from my den b/c it was in my direct view. I witnessed the force of the recess insert being installed and the damage. We were told that dry wall can crumble when they cut it and that they couldn't repair it because the cost quoted didn't cover dry wall repair. When we contacted the company, they told us that, if we wanted the hole that THEY created in our ceiling to be fixed, we'd need to pay an additional $200. To be fair, the fine print did say that dry wall repair was not included; however, it's not exactly a repair when your technicians created the problem that needed to be repaired. That's just standing behind the quality of your company's work. No 'repairs' were needed before the company entered our house. The electrical work was done well but, if you'd like recessed lights to be installed AND have them fit nicely in your ceiling without any gaping holes in your ceiling, this may not be the company for you. In addition, 24 hours later a light bulb attached to the recess light where the damaged ceiling is now went out which I replaced a day later. read more

They came out to our house in a timely manner, gave us a reasonable quote, and scheduled the work to start in less than a week. They showed up as promised right on time. Matt and Jason spent the whole day working at a fast pace, getting an amazing amount of work done in record time. We have an old house, and Matt had a lot of good ideas on how to update things for us. They put drop cloths out, moved furniture around, then put everything back in it's place and were careful to clean up after the work was done. That kind of service really stands out! I purchased a big deal from Angie's list for four recessed lights installed in our kitchen with a dimmer switch. The deal includes standard lights, but we paid extra to upgrade to the LED lights, which look great and need a dimmer because they're super bright. The LED lights have a really nice finish to them. The guys were done in less than 2 hours. They brought a large dropcloth and kept the area clean. They were extremely polite and professional, scheduling was a breeze, and I'm keeping them on my short list of favorite contractors. They'll be back to my home to install a lighted address sign. The same guy came out and gave me an estimate and explained how he would do the wiring. He was very thorough, not condescending, and he explained it in a way that was easy to understand. I've also had great experiences with their front office staff. I had to call back a couple of times because I wanted to add some options to the light. The staff is efficient and responsive and makes sure the electricians understand what the customers are requesting. They always got back to me on the same day. read more

I purchased a stand alone generator from Bailey and Shipp. The technician Matt showed up ready to work and on time. My new generator was on the ground and awaiting the propane company to connect same day. After propane was installed, there were a few finals tests done and connections made. Been thru a couple outages since and will never go back. They have stayed in touch since to monitor the hours on generator so they could perform scheduled maintenance that was included in price. Great feeling knowing its there with a new child in the home. We have well water and electric heat so this was a must and great decision looking back. Matt was informative and helped me with some upgrades to my old panel as well. Price beat other quotes from home advisor and service was excellent. No one showed up for my first scheduled appointment and I had to call them to figure out why. I was told "these things happen" which I am well aware of, but I should have been notified and should not have had to call myself (3 hours later) to find out why no one showed up. They were kind enough to send someone out the very next morning though and, at that point, I had forgiven them for initially sending me into a panic. Two lovely gentlemen showed up the next morning to install an outdoor fixture, two interior wall sconces, and a chandelier. I also had to have an exterior fixture light switch replaced. ANYWAY, the guys who came were great and professional and my total came to $625. Totally fair. Upon reviewing my bank account this morning, I was charged $725. I called to find out why, and it was due to the technician's miscalculation. Again, no one notified me that I would be charged more than I was told and more than the amount I have on my final invoice. To me, this is unacceptable and I will not be using their services again. I don't play three strikes you're out and there are plenty of other electricians out there who do just as good work, are far more informative when they decide not to show up or charge you more than their invoice states, etc. It's really a shame because they came highly recommended by a very good friend who used them when they were just Bailey & Shipp 4 or so years ago and up until today I was willing to throw more money at them (I have 5 more fixtures on the way which I am going to need installed). Bailey & Shipp, you're field staff is wonderful, but it might be time to look for new office staff because what you have going on right now, it pretty much sucks. read more

Work was contracted on my house before it was purchased. Several issues were overlooked and left unknown until 5 months later. Their response to having missed these issues, "well how do we know that you didn't go in there and make those changes". Seems like you'll need to hire a second electrician to make sure they actually did the job correct. Not only that, but when they came out to look at the work they missed, the technician never showed up for the appointment. I called two hours after the scheduled time and the receptionist said, "we never got a call from the technician, I guess there was an emergency". So another hour later someone finally showed up (3 hours late). They took pictures and left without saying much. It took a full week and three phone calls from me before I ever heard anything back. Stay far away from this company. They are rude, unprofessional, and won't take responsibility for their poor work. read more
