I called Magothy to assess some aluminum circuits in my home. The receptionist was amazing. I called and was seen same day which is impressive. I explained the job to the two techs that came out and they were super receptive and professional. We discussed the job and options were great. Then I was quoted a job that was assessed at greater than my houses square footage with a job that was not at all what we discussed. I understand being careful and thorough, but I felt like I went to a Toyota dealership and was only quoted Maserati prices. Inquired regarding modifications to the quote and the answer I was given was "this is why my boss told me to tell you". I called another company who is a master electrician and is doing the job they quoted me 12k for 3k. I should have known better. I hired Magothy for what I thought would be a quick fix. I had several other projects going on in preparation to move so I didn't bother trying to fix myself. The visit fee is annoying, but pretty standard. I then was told I would need to pay $700 just for the diagnosis. I felt forced since the guy was already in my house and I needed it done ASAP. I was then quoted $4k+ for the actual fix which was ridiculous. I declined but couldn't get out of the $700 diagnosis fee. I hired a local electrician who quoted me $1k, then went out of their way to deduct it even more after finding a more efficient solution. It all got fixed for nearly a fifth of the price that I was given by Magothy. I should have known better. read more

I received excellent service from Magothy Electric's technician Braden yesterday at our home in Severn. Braden was thorough with explaining to me the process of finding the problem and provided me with estimates of best/worst case scenarios. He listened to me and asked great questions to help him find the root of the problem. Although hobbled by a bad knee, Braden was outside digging at the lightpost in the cold rain to find the issue. He was extremely conscientious about cleaning his work areas and using booties when he was in and out. Braden is such a nice guy. He got our power back up and made good recommendations for things that he saw. Overall for Magothy Electric: Although I wasn't able to get the time slot that I had booked online the night before, I appreciate Becky's call in the morning to let me know. Honestly we have been having issues since having some construction done in our house. Our garbage disposal stopped working and then our stove and microwave today. The breaker wouldn't work when we flipped it so we called magothy electric. We were able to get a same day appt and Sean and Wil came out and explained everything and dx our situation. They also unearthed a little gas leak so on top of that we had someone else come out to deal with that. I am gracious as my concern was they were both working in the same area but luckily it didn't interfere too much. I would highly recommend Magothy electric. I received fast service and the job was done, but the company wasn't very transparent about pricing over the phone. Despite this, I chose to proceed, and Dan completed the necessary work. However, they charge a $69 or $49 service fee just to come out. Diagnosing the problem cost $500, and although it only took Dan one hour to replace a faulty outlet, they still charged me $540 in total. While they can get the job done, if you're not in a rush or on a budget, I recommend shopping around first. The company should be more upfront about the costs before sending someone out. I understand paying for expertise, but there comes a point where businesses need to be more reasonable with their pricing. I won't be using them again. read more

This was more than 100 feet from our finished basement power panel to our garage. Two outlets would cost no more than $30 and a new outlet install indoors should take an experienced electrician no more than an hour. Not only were Dan and Justin on time, but they also sent updates and confirmation before coming. They were courteous wearing show protectors when they came in and were friendly and informative. The level of professionalism was stellar, and I appreciated that they were able to address the issue and charged me less than anticipated because the issue was due to faulty wiring done by the builder. I have mixed feelings about writing this review. I believe the electricians from this company tried their best to help me, but at the end of the day my issue was not fixed and I'm still out a LOT of money. This was mentioned by others so I'll bring it up here - the consultation fee will not go towards the cost of work done, Unless you bring this up on the phone beforehand. So when making an appointment do it over the phone, ask for a note to be added to the file, and get the name of who you speak with because that was all requested. It would have been nice not to jump through hoops to get a small credit applied. The main thing that I wanted done was to have an outdoor outlet replaced. This took a very long time and it seemed like a lot of that time was spent with the electrician at his truck and on the phone. When he returned, I was given a cost of almost $5,000. It's unclear if this was reasonable or if they simply did not want to do the work, but my biggest issue is I was encouraged to go with alternative solutions that did not work. It was still pricey, but testing was done and I was led to believe that the "fix" would provide a working outlet. The electrician basically ran a shop vac to first test the outlet. He had trouble finding the amperage listed, but I pointed it out, which I thought was strange. Unfortunately when I actually looked at this later, the amperage he stated was lower than what was listed so I don't know if he just had trouble seeing or what. Still, I guess I should have double checked. Once I paid and he left, I plugged the equipment in and the outlet immediately failed. The second item of work was installing a new light fixture. This fixture had two options for mounting and I chose to use the suspended mount, with the only difference being a small chain. He called it a chandelier and tripled the price. The original plan was to center the light in the room, but I was told the wire would be a foot short or I could pay a lot more to have the walls "torn open." I opted to go with having the new light installed off from where I originally wanted it since the cost was already so high. It is not their fault that I agreed to go that route, but I really did not appreciate the interaction with the electrician at the end of the visit. He asked how satisfied I was (fair enough), but then asked "how many stars" I would rank my service. I politely declined to answer that and said what he did seemed fine, but I was very disappointed that neither project was able to be carried out as I had expected. He then pushed and pretty much demanded to know if I would give him a 5-star review and make sure to mention his name in a review. (I'm not and it was very uncomfortable that he did that). The first thing I notice after he leaves is that the new lights immediately dim when the microwave is on. Shortly after I received a "thank you" card from the company with a discount code for future work. I was already told by the electrician that their rates were higher than others, but the coupon encouraged me to call back and set up another visit. I was able to get an appointment the next day with a 2nd electrician, Dan, who was professional and seemed knowledgeable. The lighting issue was only addressed by changing to another lightbulb to lessen dimming. It seemed like Dan agreed the original solution was best, but I got the sense that the quote WAS high, but that he had to honor it since it was already given by the company. He noticed a snipped wire cut by a screw (and missed the first time). The cost was even higher than the work of the 1st electrician and would involve cutting long holes out of drywall. I could see the wire and he seemed confident it would fix the issue. Unfortunately there was still no power and several hundred dollars were spent to be left in the same position, except now with several large holes to patch. I had scheduled the appointment, but he asked my husband to pay when I was out of the room and the coupon didn't get applied. I called Magothy and was told that no one in the office could apply that change, but that someone (a manager?) would reach out to give me a call the next day. That never happened and I haven't been able to actually get the discount applied. Overall, maybe I just had issues not easily fixed, but I still regret spending so much money when I could have used a different group to find out the same thing more cheaply and possibly quicker. My advice to anyone considering them is to consider that a relatively small consultation fee could still be a LOT less than the difference in cost from another electrician so get other quotes and don't feel compelled to keep paying for additional work or you could end up about where you started except out quite a bit of money and with a few more holes. read more

I called these guys because they have good ratings online.  They are also close to me.  I needed an outdoor light fixed.  They charge $29 for estimates, and they dont deduct that from the total price for future work.  Anyway, the tech came out.  Didnt touch the light or the switch, nor did he check the fuse box.  He told me it would cost $188 to fix.  Ok great.  Im not sure how he knew that by standing in my yard and just looking at the light from 10 feet away.  He then tried to sell me a $10 backing plate for $100.  Yes that is one hundred dollars.  You can buy them at Home Depot for $8.  I really just should have refused to pay the $29 for his magical estimate based on him looking at nothing.  Watch out for this business.  Very friendly on the surface with well practiced systems in place to screw hard working people out of their money. read more

I am so thankful for magothy electric! Jeremiah and Grant showed up on time. They wore booties coming into the house which is a huge respect for my house. Took them off and put them back on as they came and went. They were attentive to listening to our concerns. Half of our house had no electricity and they were able to quickly trace it down to a jerry rigged portion of the control panel by the idiotic old owners. They fixed it in a timely fashion. I also enjoyed their sense of humor which made this nervous wreck of a situation less stressful. They took pictures as they went so properly documented things. They consulted with the owner to price everything out before we gave approval to do the job. They ask you to pay a $29 evaluation fee, which is waived upon accepting a contract with them. I needed the work done, they weren't asking for too much outside of what I thought they should be asking, so I signed on the dotted line. Within 2 hours they were done and on to their next job.
