Ninja has had very severe arthritis and skin allergies since she was a year and a half. She would scratch so bad, I came home from work one day and she bit through her own flesh. I spent thousands on medication, surgery, you name it. She has a new vet, Dr. Archer in Shirley, and the best vet I have ever encountered He gave Ninja two shots: Libella for her arthritis and cytopoint for her itching. I know I sound like an infomercial, but this dog has barely scratched since her shot and she can play Frisbee at 13 like I've never seen recently. I could not recommend Dr. Archer more. read more

We had an incredible experience with Dr. Archer. Our dog has been having trouble walking and they brought out a stretcher to bring him into the office. We had to wait a little bit to see Dr. Archer, but he is well worth the wait. He spent so much time with us and really got to know everything going on with our dog. He also made sure we didn't do pricey treatments that he didn't feel were necessary. He caught something on my dog's X-ray and referred us back to our primary vet for a follow up as well. The office staff was incredibly sweet to our dog and made sure he was comfortable the entire time. read more

This is not a veterinarian hospital. It is an Extortion shop. Unnecessary tests. Results took 2 weeks only because I called them again and again. Shirley was the place closest to me as my vet was in Nassau county. And a close friend brought his dog there for physical therapy and said they were great. He was having an abdominal ultrasound and some core biopsies to rule out cancer. The late afternoon the day before his test they called to have me bring him there as he needed vitamin K to do ultrasound. As I was paying for the final visit which the total cost was around $2000, an employee came up from the back to advise one of the treatment prices was wrong. It was not in my favor and maybe $25-40 dollars more over the $2000. When the "Vet" called me with results and no clear diagnosis he suggested testing for Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever at $600 more with another blood test with it. To top the experience as I was asking the vet questions he abruptly and rudely said he didn't have any more to discuss. He has other calls to make. I didn't feel comfortable from the 1st 5 minute consultation but my boy needed the ultrasound. Never go there again. Save headaches and money by NOT HAVING A 1ST VISIT. read more

Dr. Catherine Gray and the vet techs are incompetent, they almost killed my cat. If I didn't decide to take her to the ER vet in Riverhead, she would be dead. The other vet diagnosed her in 15 minutes - Shirley animal hospital strung us along for a week and disregarded our concerns. I brought my cat to Shirley Animal Hospital for a very distended stomach - Dr Gray was more interested in the fact my cat has never been to the vet than running the necessary diagnostic tests and treating my cat. She told us my cat was overweight despite the fact the stomach bloating happened over the course of a month and her own admission in the visit notes there was no excess fat over her ribs. She gave her a rabies shot and a flea and tick collar despite not diagnosing what was wrong with her yet. The next day while dropping off a fecal sample we asked the tech if it could be pyometra - he said no, pyo cats are very sick and do not eat. After getting the results from that test and the blood test which were normal, they decided to run ANOTHER blood test to rule out blood parasites (already ruled out) FIV and other diseases. On the phone I asked if it was likely for an indoor cat to have FIV - the tech admitted it was not but they wanted to rule it out anyway and the results would be ready after the weekend on Monday. On that call I again asked about pyometra - I was told no, it's not possible as pyo cats are very sick and can barely walk or eat, since my cat was eating they did not think it could be pyometra. The vet herself was not interested in speaking with us directly except during the examination, instead having a vet tech discuss everything with us and dismiss our concerns without even doing an ultrasound or x-ray. During the physical examination the vet palpated my cat's abdomen very firmly, knowing what we know now we are extremely lucky her uterus did not burst during this manhandling. They ran test after unnecessary test when ANY vet worth their salt would have run diagnostic imaging to see why the animal is bloated instead of making assumptions and prescribing treatments without knowing the full story. I have since done my research and every major Veterinary institution recommends diagnostic imaging in this scenario. Dr Gray showed reckless disregard for life and the sanctity of her profession. We waited days for these blood test results to come in and kept insisting this was serious and something was wrong with her. We mentioned pyometra at least 3 times. The only people who would talk with us were the front desk ladies and a male vet tech who all disregarded my concerns. I decided enough was enough and brought her to East End Vet Center who diagnosed her with pyometra within 15 minutes. East End are true professionals and ran the correct diagnostic tests - they saved my cat's life despite Shirley Animal Hospital's negligence. They told me any vet should have suspected it and not every cat will present as sick and refuse to eat. She was in emergency surgery that same day and her uterus weighed 2.5lbs - they told me they have never seen such a big uterus come out of such a tiny cat - she is only 7lbs! They couldn't believe Shirley Animal Hospital strung us along for a week without even one diagnostic imaging. After all of this they refused to give a refund for the poor excuse of an examination and unnecessary treatment. All of this could have been avoided with one ultrasound. Any vet should have caught this, instead Dr Gray dug her heels in and defended her course of treatment. She kept telling me it couldn't be pyometra despite the other vet already confirming it and my cat being in emergency surgery. Dr. Catherine Gray deserves to have her license suspended. She must hate her life and is taking it out on innocent animals, that's the only explanation. She acted with reckless disregard for my cat's life and neglected to provide standard care due to her own assumptions. She pushed tasks onto vet techs who are not supposed to be making diagnoses and they all disregarded a pet owner's concerns. These people are animal killers. Do NOT take your pet. read more

I have been going here for years and never had any problems until today. I called for my pet's refill medication yesterday and made the mistake of calling today to see if it was ready for pick up. The woman on the phone was very rude when she asked if I was called back and I replied no, then got the long insulting lecture of how the Process works meaning don't call us, we'll call you. I guess she had free time because I was expecting a yes or no answer to my yes or no question but instead had to bite my tongue as I listened to her ramble on. The owner, Dr. Archer and only one other doctor on staff "Dr. Gray," currently (hard to keep up with because Archer goes through doctors like water! ) are absolutely terrible. Archer tries to push as many tests as possible for the $$$ and Dr. Gray runs around likes she's on too much Adderol, never organized or knowing what she's doing. They will see your pet for routine visits that cost HUNDREDS of dollars but when you need an urgent appointment, they will NOT fit you in and tell you to go spend hundreds or thousands at the ER with zero remorse!!! As in my situation with a dog that was chronically I'll and inevitably going to pass, they will not give two shits about you when you need them. The front office staff is pleasant to your face until the minute they don't like that you question their ways. It definitely appears that they hire only individuals with serious life issues. They are nice one minute, dependent on their personal issues they're experiencing that day, which they will gladly share with you and rude as hell the next. BOTTOM LINE, after THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS and a terminally I'll dog, the day I needed then most, when he had blood in stool and was refusing his meds (over $500 worth per month, which they also sell you on) they WOULD NOT SEE MY DOG. I have been to this vet three or four times in the past two years and each time they scam you out of money for work that they do not do. Work that they are unable to do. Very unprofessional. On my last visit I spent $290 just for the vet visit and they still cannot answer me any questions. They answer a question with a runaround. The estimate for dental work was anywhere from $800-$2500. That's a large gap. They could not tell me what they were going to do or thought they were going to do to my dog while under anesthesia. they were determined that during the procedure. When I asked for all my records they told me I would have to go online. They would not give me my dogs records My new vet charged me 1/3 of what they were going to charge me for dental work on my dog. $360 covered the visit the blood work the anesthesia and the cleaning. Each extraction was anywhere from $50-$100 depending on the tooth. I do not understand how Shirley veterinarian can give me an estimate of 800 to 2500 for the exact same work and charge me $290 for a vet visit. On top of all this I called to discuss my dogs bloodwork and They gave me somebody else's dogs report.I called multiple times and multiple times nobody called me back. I'm being silenced. This is my third attempt to post this. I've had this sitting in my notes for months, hesitant on releasing it. But I feel like this needs to be said. This place is an absolute nightmare. Would you take your dog to a place where an employee farts very loudly right in front of a dog that was just abandoned by it's owner ready to be put to sleeps face? And had no remorse after it happened saying, "it's just a dog." They have a black Labrador Retriever that can't walk due to birth defects, The Doctor took him in after they promised to rehabilitate the pup but shortly after they gave up on him, he now sits in his urine and feces all day in a cage locked away in a closet. He doesn't go outside, he hardly interacts with other animals or people. This Doctor started out in the vet business for the right reasons but now they have turned into a power and money hungry person. This person loves all the love and attention that they get while the employees do all the work while this doctor gets all of the credit and STILL underpays them and treats them horribly. Below average experience and vibes are off here. I have a big dog and the vet seemed scared of my dog. My dog was not aggressive at all but he was nervous, he is big, and wouldn't sit right away to be examined. He is also just a puppy, under 1 year. My dog seemed uncomfortable with the vet and staff. Also, we were in a very small congested room. The vet said I should get him fixed because he 'predicted' my dog would get aggressive, this was the first time meeting him by the way. Then they tried to sell me Simparica Trio, even after I said he had a bad reaction to a similar drug Bravecto. They didn't really care or listen when I said he had a bad reaction and they didn't disclose all the issues with these types of drugs. When I questioned the issues with seizures and these medicines, the vet tech was dismissive and said, "Ya I think they have to put that warning on the box." Then they took him to another room without me or even explaining to me what was going on and when he came back he smelled like he pooped himself. After this I was on the fence about going back and then later I needed help with a medicine and the girl I was talking to on the phone was attitudinal for no reason, so that was the icing on the cake I won't go back here. While the first vet my cat saw treated him well and got rid of his uti blockage, when I returned for the follow up it was a different vet and in his effort to collect urine he hurt my cat enough that he didn't pee for nearly 48 hours and he showed distress for the next few days. It' took me calling a week to get results to say my dog was sicK ( still vomiting and not eating after all tests that were recommended ) . They dIscouraged my husband to go to the emergency hospital and treat at his hospital . They wanted to run additional tests n hospitalize with a commitment of over 1900$ to start. My husband took our small 9 lb dog to another hospItal down the block and they charged 120$ gave fluids, medication and he's feeling so much better. By far the worst animal hospital I've ever been too. I have over 5 cats. Never have I ever seen a vet so affraid to handle my animal. They used nothing but force on a freightend cat, and due to them being so afraid, didn't provide him with any of the services they made me pay for. my appointment was at 5 I was not seen by the doctor until 7. When they did come in and see him like I said they did not examine him. They keept a towel over him and pushed down on him so he was unable to move. They didn't weigh him, take his temp, or examine his eyes, the only reason I took him there in the first place. all they did was prescribe me medication. My cat Oscar had an abscess and had to get it drained. Dr. Archer and the staff was very nice and caring. They fit me in 3 days in a row to have him looked at (only charged me for the 1st visit since the others he just looked at the leg to assess if it was worse or better) before deciding to get surgery. I was told to go here from a friend.. the vet dr archer is completely money hungry, I was at work and my fiancé went with our two dogs who have allergies and are usually on apoquel and a steroid, long behold the vet charged us $400 for medications we didn't need or ask for. We went back the next day after going through everything and returned it all and asked strictly for a script of the steroid and apoquel, when he realized we weren't taking the apoquel from his office the mg went down from 16mg to 5.4 and when he asked about it he said oh I don't know maybe that's why it was so expensive i guess it was a mistake... yeah a mistake because when I was spending money at your business it's okay I get the highest dose which is more expensive. I just a completely bad vibe from the guy all he cared about was up-selling the most expensive medications and acting as if he gave a shit about the dogs. I will never be going there again and I suggest you stay far away unless you want to be charged triple for everything. This is a review of Dr. Infernuso, who preformed surgery on my dog at this hospital. Dr. Infernuso is a wonderful, caring physician. He operated on my dog Zoe in a hurricane. That's right, Dr. Infernuso didn't let little old Hurricane Sandy get in the way of his practice. From the very first consultation his dedication and skill was evident. First, Dr. Infernuso took the time to review x-rays and offer his opinion in great detail over the phone. It's a rare doctor who will discuss a case in any depth over the phone. From the x-rays he knew the problem and, importantly, how to fix it. This guy knows orthopedics the way some people know baseball statistics for their fantasy leagues. The injury was an old break in her hind leg. which her previous owners didn't bother to fix. As a result the surgery was potentially complex. Part of her leg bone (akin to our heel) had broken off and would need to be reattached or possibly secured with pins. When I met him for a consult, he again explained exactly what was wrong with her leg. He outlined three options, and the criteria he would use to decide among them. I left feeling I understood the range of possible outcomes and what the recovery would like for each. The day of the surgery went smoothly (except for the hurricane raging outside). The staff at Shirley Vet were lovely. They put up with many questions on Zoe's status during the surgery. Dr. Infernuso ended up going with the middle option of the three he'd outlined. Dr. Infernuso walked me through the before and after x-rays to illustrate the work he'd done. It's been five weeks since the surgery and she is recovering very nicely. I'm a new dog owner, so didn't have a regular vet to see for bandage changes. No problem, Dr. Infernuso had a solution for that too. He referred me to a good vet with convient hours. One additional note, Dr. Infernuso text messages! It is the most wonderfully efficient way to get simple questions cleared up. He is very responsive. read more

I want to start off this with saying although I will not be coming back, my first visit with my new kitten was great with Dr. Archer. My next two I saw a different vet and both appointments I left overcharged and unsatisfied with the quality of the visit and the attitude of the staff. My most recent visit, I waited 10 minutes in the waiting room to be checked in by the staff (while waiting I heard them all chatting and gossiping in the back) that one of the men working on the renovation had to get their attention that someone was waiting. Another 15 minutes goes by, and I finally see a vet tech. Then another 10 or so until I actually met with the veterinarian. I mentioned my kitten has been scratching her ears frequently and he suggested he take swabs and look at them through a microscope, to check for any sign of mites or an infection. He told me that it should take about 10-15 minutes. After waiting nearly 30 minutes in the exam room for the results, I was told they messed up the swab and needed to dry out the other swab. Another 20-25 minutes goes by and I finally get the vet in the room. Another 10 minutes goes by until I'm at the counter to pay. The employee ringing me up was very unprofessional and clearly did not enjoy her job. She could not figure out the computer system, then kept saying to herself how dumb the computer is, how annoying everything is. I can quote her perfectly saying "is it 7 yet?!" (I assume this was when she got off of work). This was all done directly in front of me. After waiting over an hour all together during this visit, to witness this woman be so unprofessional, I was appalled and in disbelief of how unsatisfactory something as simple as a vet visit could be. As someone who has worked in customer service and has managed a cafe, everything about my visit was absolutely unacceptable. Clientele satisfaction is clearly not something of importance. I won't be returning for any further visits. read more

On an emergent basis - fantastic. Their immediate intervention when my pomeranium Sebastian wound up on the wrong side of a bullmastiff was impressive. Aftercare was negligent, costly,and exhausting for my dog. There was an issue with a drain after surgery - their younger vet attempted to explain & the vet tech cut him off. Sebastian endured numerous costly laser treatments, series of antibiotics,pain & discomfort while "attempting to heal the surgical site". I was told the issue was caused secondary to his advanced age. During a CHF emergency in another state it was revealed that the shunt from the surgery has never been removed. My total cost out of pocket for unnecessary interventions totaled close to$800.00. I faxed appropriate documentation recording this from the vet who removed the shunt, called numerous times, sent certified letters - no response whatsoever. Being a healthcare provider myself I know honesty,integrity,& trust are vital to continuity of care. Unfortunately my experience was what I was warned about. Unnecessary procedures, deception & the almighty dollar is what I found here. As well their initial cost break down for surgery was inaccurate at check out. The final bill was $756.48 above what I'd been told. Understanding it wasn't an exact estimate I find that it was an extreme increase. Basically their intervention saved my dog yet their version of aftercare almost killed him. read more
