Well, I just called to make an appointment for my dogs. It had been several months since I had brought my dogs in for grooming due to some medical issues they were having. Had a different voice answer so I asked to speak with Judy who normally accommodates us. Was quite surprised by the very inappropriate and rude response I received...."and you need to speak to Judy because????" Hmmmm, well the answer I gave was because she knows who I am and I'm not quite sure who you are as I've never heard your voice. The gal continues on with "well I don't know who you are either....and Judy passed away." I was simply horrified at her callousness and lack of compassion. I offered my condolences-she didn't need them. Asked if they were booked today. A simple "yes, Im sorry, we are" would have sufficed. Instead I got a barrage of "well of course we are, it's a couple of days before Christmas. First, learn how to speak to clients or potential clients when you answer the phone. Secondly, a couple means "two". We're 7 days out. Third, I'll never bring my dogs here or recommend this place now that Judy is gone. If they can't even talk to people in a nice tone, I can't imagine my dogs. Would not recommend. read more

Our dogs are untrained little monsters but we love them!!! I've never used a groomer before, but when caring for two dogs became too much, we decided to check out Shirley's Grooming. My groomer of 10 years or so decided to take a vacation the first of August without telling any of her clients. I had to find someone new and closer quick. I called Shirley's and got an appt. that week. I didn't know Shirley nor Judy so I have nothing to compare the current service with what eveyone says they "used to get". Owners seem to be nice but I agree they are not particularly personable. They still have not introduced themselves but I don't care! They are kind to my dogs from what I can tell and they do a great job at trimming exactly the way I ask them to. My dogs seem happy when they leave and they haven't had to spend all day in a cage next door to some dog they don't know. They charge a bit more than my old groomer but well worth it to have them closer by and I do like the firm pick up time and the no cage atmosphere. read more

Hi! I too have been a client of Shirley's Grooming AKA--- Judy's for 15 years. Judy saw us through 2 sets of dogs and was always the sweetest lady. I miss her! I called a few months back to make an appt with Judy, Georgia answered and we decided I would bring 2 of my dogs in -- One Mini- Bernedoodle, 5 month old Puppy and one Westie like ELDER rescue, my sweet Jackson. And then, I would bring the 3rd dogs over for nails. All went great! She did a "Sanitary" trim up on Hattie the Bernedoodle and a Puppy cut on Jackson. The both looked great! And were happy and relaxed when I picked them up. I did notice a price difference, or perhaps I asked? I was NOT at all surprised the prices were changed. They were so low. Judy, has had the same clients for 20 plus years, those clients were elderly and are on a fixed income, and Judy kept her prices so low, I believe for them. The very first time, I wondered, can Georgia cut this Bernedoodle Puppy? And we started a conversation about how I would like her. She said, try to bring her again, get acquainted with the shop. I did. Wash and Blow Dry! So nice! Hattie again did great! Today was the day, Georgia was so accommodating and receiving photographs from me, like a crazy Doodle Frenzied Parent. I dropped Hattie off this a.m. we were armed with a very good plan! Let's go! She noticed that Hattie's legs were a Lot Longer than last time there- she told me she would adjust accordingly. I got a photo 2 some hours later, and Hattie looked like a Show Dog! Beautiful! Bernedoodles are very different to cut, no Bernedoodle is the same! Also Georgia, showed me some tools that she uses on "Doodles" and also showed me how to comb her, and where to be careful, if working on the dog! Thank you Georgia! I am so happy! Georgia trimmed my cat Greysons nails (who is pretty onry sometimes) and then took the time to teach my young daughter Aurora how to trim nails and groom her new pet kitten Oreo. She even parted with some of her own nail trimmers so Aurora could continue to groom her kitten at home. When my fiance and I adopted our 7 y/o Husky from a shelter, he was in rough shape and needed a wash and grooming badly. He had been in the shelter for about a month and his coat clearly hadn't been brushed in quite some time. The shelter released him late on a Saturday. We were in desperate need of a local groomer, so we called Shirley's and Georgia was very accommodating, offering to squeeze us in at the last moment late on a Saturday afternoon. When we dropped him off, she talked to us and about what she would be doing to get him groomed and walked us through the beginning steps of caring for a Husky. She was very welcoming to both us and our dog as we had never been to a groomer before and were a bit overwhelmed. From speaking with her as she worked, her expertise from working with a range of breeds is apparent. We picked him up about an hour later and he looked like a completely different dog. His coat was beautiful and he looked nothing like the ball of fur we brought in. She literally removed 2lbs of undercoat from him and he looked and smelled fantastic! Georgia definitely did an amazing job cleaning up our dog. Please give Shirley's a try if you are in need of a local groomer. Georgia and hubby do an excellent job. And yes things have changed since Judy. I did expect it. Could communication have been better- I don't know. Judy was all casual and local and took time at pickup for a long chat. She loved on my son from the time he was around 5 (he's 20) and always remembered to ask about him and I knew all about her kids and grandkids too. She had basic prices that included bath, cut and nails, glands, eyes and ears. No added extras. About $30. And I always had room for a tip. So that was her way and now I had to evaluate the new way. As a long time customer service manager do I think they could use some help-yes. But they can run their business any way they see fit and over time those who are ok with it will stay. I say to retain clients always work with them through the transition and maybe even bend a little. If I bring you three dogs to groom; it might be nice to offer a small discount since more often than not they will always all come at once. And I bring 3 fees always versus 1. I wouldn't be so set on all the far too many extras on that white board but maybe determine a reasonable fee that covers your costs & overhead. A reasonable fee brings people back or more likely to book their next groom before they leave and that repetition pays off more consistent than getting an extra 10 or 15 for all the added extras you can bring in over time. It could really lesson that initial sinking feeling you get looking at board and thinking geez this is gonna cost me way too much, how do I figure this out, and do they even want any business from the locals. I love to do business local. I don't know any groomers who charge a day care fee if you don't get the dog in less than an hour from the call that they are done? Do we know that your starting on them ASAP when we drop off- what if we go to the doctors or to grab some groceries and have phone on silent? We could have gotten the dog but we didn't know? Too many life variables happen for everyone. Pick up kids- run an errand- get a flat tire, whatever. Do people leave their pets all day as I was informed sometimes happens -probably, but does everyone have to pay the price for the sins of a few? Again I find them to be excellent groomers, but maybe not the best at customer service. Growing pains and comparison to the past (Judy) makes it tough on them. Do they provide instruction and helpful hints yes if you happen to be on Facebook or instagram with them but that's just something they do- it shouldn't add to cost. Do they have props and put cute pictures out there of our pets - yes and we love it. Sadly- I can no longer afford to go there. Today it cost me $65 for one dog to get groomed. It included the $15 you didn't pick the dog up within 45 minutes fee. I couldn't I went to a doctor appointment straight away after dropping her. I had to wait 30 minutes for doctor sooo when I got call she was done I hadn't even had my apt. If all three had been there today it would have been $195 potentially. Just knowing there's always a possibility of missing the timing to pick up would be stressful. What if I came from PV as a client? Am I forced to stay in the neighborhood- it seems like I would be. I am an avid pet lover. And when my friend passes I inherit her dog to care for and I will, but I sadly have to shop for a place that has more reasonable and fair pricing that keeps me coming back and still does a good fair grooming of my pets. A place that keeps me able to even offer a tip and has an open and inclusive facility where I can see the dogs easily, and has cages because dogs don't belong all together in a corral . Even the vet tells me that- it's safer, they feel safer and protected even if only for 45 minutes. I wish nothing but the best for them. It's hard to run a business and you won't make everyone happy. I was never unhappy - I just can't afford their pricing and extras. And yes we had some tense conversations sometimes because they are quite rigid with the rules. Even if it means losing a customer. I suspect that will loosen over time and they will do just fine. There's always a place for everyone. She's not Judy and it's not fair to expect she is. Maybe that's the biggest hurdle. My dear friend, neighbor, and dog groomer Judy Lyons passed away this year. I had known her and used her as a groomer since 2006. I am so thankful to Georgia for keeping the shop and Judy's memory alive. I have thousands invested in my Pomeranian, Thor between what I paid the Breeder and all the training classes he has attended. I wouldn't trust my Pomeranian to just anyone but I totally trust Georgia. She loves him and he looks like a show dog every time I take him to Georgia to get groomed. Long haired dogs are a lot of work and you have to take the time to brush them out between groomings and get them groomed on a regular basis. As a former business owner myself I know how hard it is to run a business. The first 2 years are the hardest and you are learning as you go. In Judy's memory I hope everyone can get to know Georgia, and love her like Thor and I do! read more

UPDATED: Based on Georgia the owners response, I have these points to add: All Georgia had to do with existing clientele that she inherited was a simple WELCOME flier stating the new ownership, rate changes, and her updated policies (i.e. about leaving pets 1.5 hours after they are done - we were 30 minutes after her deadline). Many people WORK, and if you have a specific timetable, regardless of what your handwritten whiteboard states, as a courtesy you should reiterate it at the time of drop off!! Additionally, at no time did you communicate approximately what time pick up would be. Again, another courtesy since you have such a strict policy. And going through all of this for $15??? I hope it was worth it to you. Furthermore, insulting the clientele you inherited by stating they took advantage of Judy's kindness for years. WOW..... If no one saw that in your long winded attempt at trying to convince everyone that you were "in the right", again SHAME ON YOU. We loved Judy and she loved her clientele and to accuse us loyal clients of taking advantage of her kindness?? Disgusting. She was always the utmost in professional and if she thought someone was taking advantage, she would also let them know. If you have an older and/or special needs (arthritis, e.g.) stay clear of this shop. My dog is older albeit HEALTHY, perhaps standing up the entire time may be difficult. And those spots you referred to as "hot spots" were merely AGE spots that many older dogs get! And to make a comment about "finished cleaning the mess from her haircut"?! Perhaps you should consider another line of work. Hopefully this experience will drive you to get the customer service training you need if you want to be successful as a business owner. You did a good job of grooming but you clearly need to understand how to be a professional and handle customers better. Today marks a new day for me and if there was a rating of ZERO stars, that is what I would have indicated on this review. I've been a client for decades at Shirley's Grooming and have always LOVED Judy the owner. Yesterday, I called in to get an appt for my dog and found that not only did Judy retire, but also that she was gravely ill and I cried on the phone. I was talking to the new owner, Georgia, who seemed compassionate as she explained the situation. I asked her if she had all of the records and information on my dog that Judy always so lovingly took care of, assuming she would at least honor rates from one month ago. She said that she had all of our information. I made the appointment for the day after. Today, I picked up my dog. Not only was my $35 rate (my dog is very easy to handle) jacked up to $45, she also tacked on a $15 "day care" fee because I picked up my dog at 2pm (1.5 hours after the call). Apparently I was supposed to read the very small print on her handwritten white board that stated this information when I dropped off my dog. At NO time did she mention this to me as a new shop owner. Judy nor ANY of the other groomers I've been to in my lifetime ever charged this fee during regular hours and I can absolutely appreciate people leaving their dogs after hours getting charged. I asked her why she didn't explain her fees when I dropped off the dog in the first place, or at the very least, when she left me a voicemail stating my dog was ready. Judy hasn't even been gone for even a month yet! (it's only been weeks!) She argued with me and told me that it was my responsibility to READ the fine print on the board. I then mentioned the fact that she inherited a large clientele and that she should at least be cognizant of the loyalty for the business/location. She said she is a new owner/shop (which holds the SAME name) and that she has new rules. I pleaded with her and gave her the opportunity to make good just this once but she refused and said that her fees are firm. I left and told her that I would NEVER come back and that rest assured I will inform all of my family and friends and neighbors to stay away from her business. All she had to do make a small concession and waive the $15 "late fee" (the rate increase is what it is) but instead she was argumentative and unyielding and clearly doesn't understand good customer service. I, too, am in the customer service industry and value my clients very much. As a new shop owner, I hope that one days she understands the value of a customer and changes her ways for everyone's sake. Bottom line? Why support a business who clearly doesn't support the community and clientele that she inherited from an amazing woman - Judy. Judy clearly understood the value of her clients and the pets she took care of. Shame on you Georgia! read more

I have been coming to this establishment long before the current new owners and Shirley was amazing. Since the inception of the new owners I have struggled to get appointments for my two pugs and lab. The quality of grooming is average, however, the customer service is below average. The current owners have always pressured me on exact pick up times. Today I was 10 minutes late (410pm) and she was adamant in charging me $25 for being late and never inquired why; sign of a lack of compassion. Anyway that's the Last $25 I'll ever pay that establishment. I'm a physician and I never charge patients for being late..........I just patiently wait but never charge. read more

When my dear friend and neighbor Judy retired that I had used since 2006 I was so worried about having to find a new groomer. When I met Georgia and saw the fantastic job they did with my precious Pomerarian puppy Thor, I knew my worries were over! Thor looks like a show dog every time! I love the cute pictures they take of Thor and my little Chihuahu, Stewie! The little scarfs, bow ties and other accents they use will build special memories I will have for years to come! Wow! Georgia was having a bad day today.! We too have a service company and sometimes you have to cut the customer just a little bit of slack. She called me at 9:02 as as my husband was pulling up to her door. ( we were supposed to be there by 9:00 AM). She turned him away because he was late. I'm glad your business is doing so well that you can Eliminate your customers for being two minutes late. Good news doesn't travel near as fast as bad news travels faster. I only gave one star because you have to put something in order to post. ..................................................................... I was just reviewing some of the old posts on yelp and see that there were NO negative posts when Judy was there and now there's a lot with Georgia. Judy is probably rolling over in her grave seeing what has happened to her perfect shop. I hope Georgia will take some classes on customer service before it's too late. DOGG ODDITIES in Torrance does a GREAT job and NO drama. They are also open on Sunday. I can make an appointment for anytime during the day so my pet doesn't have to be caged for an hour or more, waiting for her turn to be groomed. Also, they are "proud to be 100% cage free". They have great (Judy) prices too. You did us a favor by turning us away for arriving late (9:02 AM). I hope you will learn how better to communicate with your customers and be a little more compassionate and understanding to their needs. Today i dropped my dog off asked for her to be shaved trimmed around face and ears no nails were cut she was not shaved and trimmed as requested she smelled like a bath but nothing else no grooming was done for 40 dollars Feeling totally ripped off ugh i wont go back. My little dog is disabled. She wears a diaper and a one piece baby suit to keep her diaper on. She can not walk or stand and the diaper and outfit cause mats many groomers think she is just to much trouble. At Shirley's Grooming they are kind and caring and work with her not complain about her. My little dog has been thrown out of a car and does not need more stress. Shirley groomers make sure she is comfortable. IT IS GREAT TO LEAVE HER AND KNOW SHE IS IN GOOD LOVING HANDS read more

I've been taking my Lola to Shirley's for almost 7 years..... when I drop her off I feel as if she's being dropped off at my sister's or my brothers or my mother's house that's how comfortable and relax I feel about Shirley's place.
