The space is casual and clean, and the staff are always friendly when I come in to pick up my food. This time I did carryout again, but instead of my usual chicken shawarma combo, I decided to try one of their bowls and I'm really glad I did. The bowl had pretty much everything I enjoy and the flavors were really good. If anything, I think it would be nice if there were a few more topping options just to add a little more variety, but overall I truly enjoyed it. And I have to mention the mango smoothie because I get it every single time. It's always good! Shish kebab express is fairly close to my work. I finally decided to stop in and check out the food. My favorite is usually a Shish Kafta sandwich, lamb. I decided to go with the trio combo, which comes with a side and a drink. Right after I ordered the waitress placed some hot bread, garlic sauce and salsa on the table. I knew already I had too much food. I ordered the fattoush salad as my side. Everything was very tasty, including the garlic sauce which was delicious. Staff was attentive and friendly, I will be coming back. By the way, I love shish kafta, but it is usually a little dry. This was moist and delicious. I can't wait to come back and try more things on the menu. Update on this place: I picked up a carry out for a coworker and I today. When I got the order back to work there was a main ingredient missing from my coworkers salad. She called just to see what they would do. Worked up an appetite last Friday after our afternoon walk around the track and had a taste for some Shish Kabob. Honestly we metro Detroiters live in such a great area for food, don't we? Hummus, garlic sauce, and fresh bread all at a whim. However I ended up getting the Shish Kabob wrap with cheese (never had one with yellow cheese, it was intriguing) and the husby got the Shish Kabob trio through the GrubHub app here on Yelp. Tons of food, as always. My husband got all lamb for the trio, plus fatoosh side salad which was huge, and fries. My wrap was also large enough to split into two meals, which I enjoyed for lunch on Saturday as well. Delicious with the yellow cheese, maybe it was American? Unfortunately I have to downgrade my rating of this establishment to 4 stars due to their portion sizes significantly decreasing. My wife and I recently ordered the Shish Kabob Triple combo and the Shish Kafta Triple combo. The salads came in much smaller boxes than they have in the past. There was significantly less rice included. There were only a couple pickles included just one piece of roasted vegetable with each combo. I'm assuming their sandwiches and some of their other dishes remain mostly unchanged, but if they have, it could slide into 3 star territory. read more

I ordered the Shish Kafta with rice, lentil soup, extra garlic sauce with bread and Baklava. -The bread and garlic sauce was a 5/5 knock out. Tasted amazing and fresh. Nestled just a block away from East Detroit High School, the restaurant is usually bustling with business. But don't worry, the wait staff is always attentive to customers needs. The owners are almost always present, busy ensuring that orders are filled in a minimal amount of time. Every time that we've gone to dine in, the restaurant has been clean and extremely inviting. The clientele is an eclectic hodgepodge of people from all walks of life, who obviously come for the delicious food. Don't be surprised if you see police from Eastpointe or even Detroit frequenting the restaurant, on their dinner breaks. I've tried numerous dishes, both vegetarian and meat based and have yet to be disappointed by anything that I've tried. I find that all of the dishes are ample in quality and quantity. A couple of my favorite dishes are the veggie grape leaves, the Mujadara (lentils and rice, with carmelized onions on top), and the Kafta (minced or ground meat with spices). My entire family LOVES the fresh baked bread, hot out of the brick oven, with their delicious hummus, garlic dip or the tomato based "salsa-like" dip for bread. All three accompaniments to the bread are delicious ! I must admit, I'm somewhat apprehensive about divulging this last secret, for fear that she will be over taxed, but without a doubt, our favorite server is Ashley. She is an awesome, 20 something, tattooed, hip chick, who is EXTREMELY attentive. As a relatively regular place that my family likes to frequent, my kids actually noticed that she can actually remember what we ate on previous trips ! And we're not saying from a week prior, we're generally talking a month or so. When asked, Ashley will happily give you her opinion of her favorite dish (the ghallaba with veggies). Ashley seems to be an amazing anomaly, always attending to our needs, topping off our drinks or bread basket, but not be continually buzzing by us, affording us privacy with our meal. Unfortunately due to COVID-19, we've been unable to actually dine in, but they are STILL OPEN for carry outs ! I was pleasantly surprised to see that the carry outs are just as fresh and ample of servings as the dine in fare. I'm very surprised there are no reviews here yet. This place used to be called "Hummus".. the funny thing was that the Hummus was the weakest thing on the menu. Now "Shish Kabob" (which is the same name for a Greek place on 9 Mile and Harper a mile and a half away) First time here was a carry out when they first opened. The food presentation in the carryout was beautiful. They take the time and make it nice. I'll try and post some pics. The Good: Salad dressing is very good... if I compliment a salad dressing then I really liked it. I thought they should sell it separately and the next time I came in I noticed that they already had the idea! The Bad: Chicken Shish Kabob flavor was weak, maybe it wasn't marinated long enough and the garlic spread tasted like they didn't take out the bitter green part of the garlic. That or it was old. The next time dine in: What a turn around, ordered the Shish Tawook and this time the flavor was very good. Hummous good, condiments, garlic spread better. Bread. Pepper and I have gotten take out here a few times this year and it seems to be improving. Fallafel is just ok. Ordered a selection of food from here through DoorDash and was very pleasantly surprised. Hummus is delicious, could have eaten that all day. Normally I am all about the pita, but here they give you bagged pita - it's hugely generous amounts, but I didn't love it. In contrast, the fattoush bread was incredible. It arrived still piping hot and we all loved tearing them open and stuffing them with the meats and hummus and more. The Shish Kabob combo was a real treat - all of the meats were delicious, the rice was flavorful, and the vegetables were great too. The veggie ghallaba was amazing as well - super rich and flavorful, lots of food. The ultimate pie combo was nothing particularly special - I would skip this, and if you get the garlic sauce (so good!), the large size is huge - just go with a small side of it. I have gotten delivery from here several times now and am blown away by how good the food is and how well they do a delivery (how it is packed, what they pack, etc.) I have gotten Greek chicken fattoush which is really delicious and I would recommend. They packed the chicken for the salad separately so it would stay hot and not make the rest of the salad soggy during transport. I've had both the chicken and lamb shwarma salad sandwich which are also delicious and very sizable. And I've had their crushed lentil soup, which is also good. Solid food BUT. I placed an online order, went to pick it up. The second I walked in, the "hostess" or whatever her job is, looked me up and down. Didn't say hello, judged me, and continued getting yelled at by her boss. I got home, didn't receive the rice pudding I ordered. I called and she answered saying "we don't have rice pudding." With major attitude. Uhhhhh okay then take it off your menu and don't charge me for it. It's on my receipt. They offered to bring me baklava which is nice but I could have done without the attitude. Update- an hour later with no baklava. $8 down the drain. Wish I hadn't tipped. Update #2- we called to ask if this was being delivered and they said another hour. APPARENTLY, I was supposed to pick out a baklava at the restaurant during my pick up. NO ONE told me this. They should have called me after I placed my order to tell me there wasn't rice pudding. When I got to the restaurant they should have told me there wasn't rice pudding and told me to pick out baklava. They're claiming they're extremely busy, when I went there, I was the only one there. I just think it's ridiculous that they expected me to know there wasn't rice pudding and I was supposed to pick out baklava at the register. Soooo incredibly stupid. The competition (Café Jole) only charges $15.99 and the portion is larger so go figure. The table we sat at was wobbly and loose. The décor is old. Someone told me this was a "Clock" restaurant (Like a Denny's ) from 50 years ago. Well, maybe they should remodel lol. *******HERE IS THE WORSE PART ABOUT THIS RESAURANT******** I receive my bill and proceed to pay. I look at the line items and there is a $1.00 Set-Up fee. My friend had a $1.00 Set-Up fee also on his bill. WTF??? I ask about it and the server says it is to set-up the bread and the garlic sauce we received. I said, "Do you know it is illegal to charge someone for something without informing them at first"? She said the owner makes them do it. I told her to get the owner for me in back. She tried and we would not come talk to me but did tell her to remove the fee. I WILL NEVER GO HERE AGAIN!!! For that reason alone. This is the same scam they tried years ago out west. You would sit down in a restaurant and the server would bring you a glass of water (even if you did not ask for it) then they would charge you a dollar on your bill.
