My boyfriend and I finally went here after my old roommates told me about this spot years ago. They raved about how good it is. They were right on the money. I got the chicken schwarma, which is my go to. Delicious! I believe my boyfriend got a gyro and loved it. He also ordered the onion rings, and they were an unexpected delight. Definitely the star of the show. I'm not even sure what it was about them. I think they were perfectly breaded, and the breading was seasoned perfectly, and it was also unique. If you don't want to get anything else, just don't sleep on the onion rings. Good service and solid food! I enjoyed my experience and like that it's near the Capitol. I got the shish kabob plate to share with my partner, which included 2 skewers of meat of your choice and rice, a side salad, pita bread, and hummus. We placed an online order from Shish Kabob Grill (1503 Grant St, Denver) on Saturday, October 18 for takeout -- one gyro sandwich, two meat combo plates, one shish kabob plate, and a garlic dip appetizer. We picked up the order on our way to the Denver airport and ate it before our 5 PM flight to Chicago. By the time we landed around 9 PM, every member of my family who ate the food was experiencing severe stomach cramps and diarrhea. By that night, all of us were very sick and the symptoms have continued for days. This was the only shared meal we had that day, and it clearly caused a serious foodborne illness. Extremely disappointed -- not only for the ruined trip, but for the lack of food safety. I've reached out to the restaurant directly for a refund and hope they take this seriously to prevent anyone else from going through this. read more

Still in exploration mode after moving downtown a few months ago; it seems impossible to try all of the restaurants within walking proximity. It's been awhile since we had Mediterranean cuisine, so this place was definitely on the list. When we arrived we were quickly greeted and seated at one of the window tables. The inside is welcoming and full of natural light. The staff was super, prompt and genuinely grateful. The menu, QR code at table only, was full of the usual suspects for Mediterranean cuisine. After much vacillation, I finally decided on the Hummus and Meat entree with Gyro meat. I had to try their Falafels, so got the appetizer as well. My wife Janet D. ordered the Lamb Shank. Holly $&@!, the food was very well spiced and super delicious. The lamb, exceptionally tender, could have been eaten without teeth. The falafels were awesome, shaped like donuts and not the usual balls. The hummus texture was almost too smooth, but still fantastic. Was craving some doner kabab (gyro) and found this place to have decent stuff. The service was great other than the rude European sitting behind me yapping away on his work call on full volume speaker on his phone which was frankly annoying. The folks working here though are great. I had the gyro sandwich/wrap. Several things that could improve on this in my opinion. The meat itself wasn't as 'smooth' if that makes sense. While it had flavor, the salt was a tad bit extra and the texture was just lacking that slight smoothness I'm used to. The pita was not fresh unfortunately. That would be my biggest complaint. While I do get this is a fast food place kind of a joint, you gotta have fresh pita. It came with a side and I selected the onion rings; they were TERRIFIC. Freshly fried and HOT. I do feel for the quantity of the meat, the $12.99 was slightly steep. Given that they do give a side with this, I'd say the $9.99 or $10.99 at most is the right price based on the amount of meat that was provided. All in all, I did like my time here and the ambience. Simple, clean and quiet (if not for the guy behind me). I will definitely come here again before I leave Denver to try one of their plate meals. read more

I picked up dinner from here on my way home from work last week. The restaurant was clean and it didn't talk to long to get our order ready. I got the falafel plate which comes with pita. My husband got the the gyro with onion rings. My husband said his gyro was good and his onion rings were crunchy and especially good. The staff and family members are always so incredibly kind, friendly, and appreciative of our business. Their food is absolutely delicious and so authentic, I simply can't go anywhere else. And the BEST and most unique item they have is their Hummus! I am serious, it is the BEST hummus you will ever have! I don't know how they do it, but it's so soft, almost a creamy-like texture, and so flavorful. When my brother-in-law introduced me to Shish Kabob for the first time, he described their Hummus as "heavenly garlic frosting". It's definitely a must-have and my absolute favorite item that they serve. All of their menu items are amazing, but you have to eat every bite with the hummus!! It's nothing too special inside or outside, but we figure that that's usually because most of the work, money & care goes into the food - as it should! Although there weren't many people there, service was a bit slow which was unfortunate because we were pretty hungry. Absolutely horrible experience. I walked in to a empty restaurant w just 1 sat table. My service dog with me. I told the guy behind the counter he was full service animal. He then told me right away. No he is not. What service does he provide? N Said show me the papers. (Which I have no problem doing as I've had to produce the papers at the airport n resorts we've stayed at during this trip) So as I tried to pull them out. He then cuts me off n tells me to just sit down. Mind you. I flew in from Texas with my dog. So obviously to get through TSA I have actual correct paperwork. Not just a vest that says "service dog". By this time. I've lost my appetite and didn't eat much of the food. Food was decent. I got the gyro sandwich. Food came out very fast so that's a plus ( maybe cos he wanted us out fast..). From where I was sitting, I heard them drop into the fryer and get cooked to order. Nice. The chicken shawarma sandwich was just okay. First thing that caught my eye while making a decision as to where to eat was the 400+ reviews and since this location was nearby the Civic Building where we were planning to watch the Grand Illumination, we had justification to walk in this direction anyways. The interior of the restaurant was quite authentic with the walls adorned with middle eastern paraphernalia. The middle eastern music set the tone of the ambiance but what settled our hungry stomachs were the food and delicious pita bread. My family ordered the Shish Kabob Plate, Meat Combo Plate, Beef Kifta Plate, Chicken Kifta Kabob Plate. They were all delicious, meat was tender and soft, the spices and added bbq sauce in some of the dishes were WOW!! The Pita was soft and yummy as well as the famous Humus. All delicious!! If your wife is happy then you hit the jackpot!! I loved the pita bread so much that I ordered a "Bag" of pita. Thinking that I would receive a bag of warm pita cut-up into 1/4 sized pieces, I received the entire bag of pita itself (Kronos brand). I was laughing with our waiter because I had thought otherwise and he said no worries after I asked him to warm-up 5 pieces and keep the other pieces in the bag. I then proceeded to stash the 5 warmed pieces of pita in my jacket pocket to munch on while we were watching the Grand Illumination at the Civic building down the street. =) The area is sketchy on the sidewalk across from the capital. There are homeless scattered around and the smell of urine is unbearable. However if you walk on the capital building side and then cross at the light walking directly to the corner where the restaurant is located, you should be ok. One of the worst falafel meals I've ever had the displeasure of consuming. Quite frankly, I'm confused by the rave reviews Shish Kabob Grill is receiving. Are we talking about the same place here? I came to this small corner restaurant with high hopes and left as a dissatisfied customer. FALAFEL SANDWICH ($5.99): The lettuce was wilted and the tomatoes were still green. I didn't see any onions and the sandwich was just a sloppy mess. The tzatziki sauce was really thin and watery. Fries are $2.49 extra and were extremely plain, not sure if salt was even added. 2/5 GYRO SANDWICH ($7.99): Brother-in-law and husband said it was okay, but not impressed. At least fries were included with their meals. 3/5 SERVICE: Hot as a mother in here. Refills took extremely long to get. It took forever to get our food, and it seemed like everyone else got their food before us (even when we were their first). 2/5 VIBE: Cramped casual restaurant that's seat yourself. The busiest part of the restaurant is the to-go line at the counter. Worth a Return Visit? I wouldn't recommend Shish Kabob Grill because the food isn't fresh and is utterly forgettable. Yes yes yes! I've finally found a place with a legit gyro for a reasonable price and it goes by the name of Shish Kabob Grill. I'm not in this part of town but found myself here for a two day training class and had no clue where to eat. I stumbled upon Shish Kabob and as soon as I walked in and smelled all the wonderful aromas, knew it was going to be a legit place to get some middle eastern grub. I got there relatively early for lunch and sat at the counter since it was just me. This is a family owned place and the son came over, took my order and I patiently waited for my food, even though they make it right there behind the counter, such a tease! The gyro came out and it was glorious--chunks of succulent lamb meat instead of sliced that you find at many places with the stand tomato, onion and lettuce with tsaziki sauce (thick, not runny, woo hoo!!!!) atop a fluffy warm pita. As always, it was awkward to eat since it is a gyro but I destroyed that bad boy and my belly was happy afterwards! I hope something brings me over to Colfax again just so I can get another gyro from Shish Kabob! read more
