Because the dining room and kitchen are small, it almost feels like you're eating in the owners' (Vonda & Davinder) home. Anticipate the service to be on the slower side, as the kitchen is small (you can even peak in there to see them cooking). Since we aren't widely experienced in Indian cuisine, we asked them to put together some different things for us to try - a lot of different things. We enjoyed pretty much everything, and would order most of what we had again. The food is fresh, well-spiced (flavor more than heat), and the service was personable. I will say that the taste is definitely there but the amount of food that you get for the price is not that great. I ordered the goat and it had more bone and fat than meat on it. The rice was plain. I also ordered the butter chicken which again the flavor is there but the amount of chicken and sauce was not a lot for the price of $22. $80 for two people to eat it's just too much money. I love strolling around Mount Dora and trying new restaurants, I stumbled upon Shiva Indian Restaurant and was excited. The outside was beautiful, I loved the decor and all the beautiful detail they took the time to put in the restaurant. The service was ok, the young lady was new so she was trying but we kept having to flag her down for drink refills and little things you would ask for if she checked in. There was a man that was very helpful. I apologize I did not get their names. The food was subpar, I enjoy trying new Indian restaurants and I get the same thing every time. Lamb samosa, Chicken tikka masala and lamb biriyani. The tikka needed more spices, it was bland and the same for the biriyani. I will say after asking for the yogurt sauce, I was able to eat the biriyani. I samosa was ok lacked seasoning. Overall, I'm not sure it's a restaurant I have to return to as there are so many more to try but I won't say never. read more

Why this place got two stars, is because the food was pretty good, and the decor was decent. However everything else was SERIOUSLY lacking at this location, and I left feeling terrible from the way that I was treated. I've been to a couple of Indian restaurants, and my mother was in town and really enjoys Indian cuisine. We were showing her Mt.Dora and saw this place and thought we check it out. We went in and asked for a menu, which when I opened was sticky. But I put that to the side, cause sometimes different soaps can do that. The waitress though...if you're not familiar with Indian cuisine, she made you feel bad about it. Each time I'd ask a question or spoke any words her smile would immediately go away. The only time she smiled at me was when we were getting our to go boxes. It took some time getting recommendations out of her, and we had to wait over 10 minutes to get my husbands drink refilled, and rather than taking the empty glass after dropping off the refill, she left it there! Mind you, we were the only table in the restaurant during this time. To end things off, my husband told me I had an ant on my hand that almost went on my face, and my moms purse had ants on it which we discovered right after leaving the restaurant. Though the food was pretty good(some of the basmati rice was crunchy) and the prices weren't crazy for the food we received (it was a little high) we would NOT recommend dining here until some sort of improvement comes to this establishment. read more

I am glad we disregarded the recent reviews. A lovely spot m, very sweetly decorated. The gentleman who served us was polite and pleasant. Our drinks served quickly. The veggie samosas were perfectly crisped, delicious and spicy, served with an excellent mint and a tamarind sauce. I had a shrimp dish for my main. We ate here last night and it was wonderful. The service was amazing. The food was incredible. We eat a lot of Indian food so we are picky, but Shiva will be one of our go tos! As we sat there, many regulars came in and out. The staff clearly knew them. We got samosas, aloo chaat, a korma and paneer kadhai. Everything was amazing. We decided to give this place a try since it had 4 stars and was within a mile from us. The inside is beautiful, it's a small restaurant located in the Mount Dora downtown area. Server was sweet and took our order. One of us ordered a mango juice that tasted spoiled and bland which we told the server we didn't like and returned. Their wifi wasn't working for me so I had to use the coffee shops next door. The food took a long time even though there was just another table there with us, which is understandable since it was worth the wait. The server was sweet but slow. We had to flag her down for refills after about 10 minutes of waiting for her to refill a sweet tea and trying to get her attention with hand gestures. The food was really good! We ordered a few dishes including Chicken Tikka Masala, Butter Chicken, and Chicken Saag. Everyone's favorite was the Chicken Tikka Masala. The naan were good but 90% of them were on the burnt side. When was brought the bill we noticed we were charged for the drink that we returned full. We didn't complain or anything, but it was unethical of them. Overall I give this place a three because the food was really good but there are some things they could improve on. Will be back to update! read more

A little background on my experience with Indian food. I have been eating Indian food on a weekly+ basis for about 15 years. I've visited India twice. I've been in a relationship with an Indian man for 11 of the past twelve years. This place is okay if you have a desperate craving for Indian food. The prices are high for the smaller portions. I ordered saag paneer and rasmalai to-go. I was given a small portion of rice for the saag, and had to make more rice at home. The rasmalai tasted fine, but again, the portion was about half of what I normally get for the same price at other Indian restaurants. So three stars for flavor and prompt to-go service. Two star deduction for price: portion ratio. Just not worth it. I can't believe I had to make more rice. Never have I not been given enough rice for my saag. read more

The food was average and rather bland and the service was very poor. My wife and I arrived at the restaurant a few minutes before six and there were only about six or eight other customers there. However, when the waitress came over to get our order, she was in a big hurry and took off before I could add appetizers to our meal. We then sat there until about 6:45 when we got our meal without a waiter checking on us. As soon as the meal was delivered, we got the same treatment. The wait staff ignored us. Food was sensational. From our appetizers to our main courses, everything was fresh, tasty and filling. We ordered lassis. My husband had his usual mango while I tried the pistachio. My boyfriend works in the city of Mount Dora and highly recommended this place to me. After visiting the Scottish Highlands Festival I decided to accompany him to Shiva. The atmosphere is cozy with sparking wall decor and ceiling tiles and half booths mixed with some stand alone tables. We came on a relatively chilly night and were comfortable and warm inside the restaurant. Our waitress greeted us within moments and was extremely pleasant to talk to. We ordered the chili chicken as an appetizer to start, the butter chicken as my entree, chicken vindaloo as his and a side of garlic naan bread. When ordering our entrees we were offered different spice levels- mild, medium, hot and Indian hot. We both decided to order our entrees hot. The chili chicken came out in a timely manner and was delicious. The dish packed just enough heat (I love spicy food) and still had an amazing flavor. If you don't like a bit of spice I wouldn't recommend getting this though! Minutes after we finished our appetizer our entrees and garlic naan came out. My butter chicken was outstanding. It was accompanied by perfectly cooked rice garnished with cilantro that blended amazingly will with the spicy, creamy tomato sauce. The garlic naan was cooked a little crispier than my preference but was delicious nonetheless. Who doesn't love a bunch of garlic?? My boyfriend raved about his dish as well. We were too stuffed to try any dessert and took our leftovers home. They were just as good the next day.
