Initially I wanted to give them a 5 star rating. For 80$ they cleaned up some beat up ll bean boots and replaced a collar on some vintage danner boots. I dropped it off Wednesday and they said it would be ready by Monday. They actually had it ready the next day so thy are definitely fast but I think I would have preferred they take their time and get the small details right. The ll bean boots look good, there was some leftover polish they didn't fully rub in but minor quibble. Really its the repair on the danner boots that I think would have benefited from more attention to detail. The leather they replaced is the same color but way more wrinkled and its clearly a cheaper leather than the original. Whats worse is the stitching, the old one had it tucked in and smooth but the repair has the old leather more pronounced and it rubs on the heel and ankle. Its still wearable but feel like an extra 10 minutes would have resulted in a better finish. read more

Brought two pairs of shoes in for cleaning/conditioning and was told it would be $25 dollars. When I came to pick up suddenly it's $25 dollars EACH. There are also new discolored splotches on the boots and the tongue of the shoe is still dirty so the cleaning job was not even thorough. I felt compelled to pay and tip because the guys were very friendly, but frankly I feel swindled and cheated. I would never have left my shoes there if I'd known that was the quality and price. I would have just bought the oil and did it myself. Be more transparent about your rates, I will not be returning. read more

I have been utilizing this establishment for years and while they are not inexpensive, they are VERY GOOD! The quality of the craftsmanship is second to none, and the cobbler is exceptionally friendly. Back in the day when I only wore Johnston & Murphy and Allen Edmond shoes I would replace heels and half-soles rather than ditch a pair of $300 shoes so a few pairs a year to the Shoe Dr.! Recently my daughter complained that her favorite boots had a run down heel and hole wearing in the sole and asked for "HELP!" The guy at the counter was nice and attentive, quick drop-off process, I needed a pair of wedges re-soled and a pair of boots needed the heel fixed/replaced. They had them ready next day, repair seems to be of good quality. The heel repair on the boots wasnt bad in terms of cost, the wedges a little more expensive bc of the repair needed but they negotiated the price a bit which was appreciated. I've been putting off getting a zipper on a boot fixed for months and finally decided to drop my shoes off at the Shoe Hospital. Very old timey, makes you feel like you've gone back in time. They were able to fix my zipper in a 24 hour turnaround and even took the time to reattach the pull tab to make it look almost like new. I found the price to be reasonable as well. read more

I bought a pair of cowboy boots not too long ago, the tread was almost nonexistent and I kept slippin and sliding. While visiting a job site I stumbled across this place on the way back to the car, stopped in the next day with my boots and asked if they can tread them. All I had to do was pick between two options that would work on the boots and they said I could pick them up anytime after 2 pm. With the work schedule I have that wasn't gonna work, ended up picking them up 2 days later and couldn't be happier. Tread was cut to fit perfectly and shaved at the back to match the contour of the boot heel. Total price for a re-tread and light cleaning $58 They were really friendly and accommodating, store was clean and the frontage was historic and well kempt. I'd highly recommend a visit. read more

I love the Shoe Hospital! The location is great. It's easy to get to when running errands in the Loop, South Loop or Magnificent Mile neighborhoods. And parking is surprisingly easy. As I approached the store the kind and engaging shoe shine guy opened the door for me and welcomed me with the the best hospitality I've seen in a long time. The lady at the desk was just as friendly. I wanted a new pair of shoes stretched and was able to pre-pay if I preferred. I like that -it's easier to run in a grab my shoes when they are ready. They were stretched beautifully and I was very happy. As a hotel Concierge, I have sent several guests here for emergency services and they have always come through for them. My guests returned to the hotel extremely happy. The store has an old school look. I like that. I wouldn't come back to this shop because of the face-to-face experience I had paired with the shoddy craftsmanship of the work. I expected more attention to detail for a service that put me out $80 on a good pair of Frye shoes. See photos for detail: * Sloppy cement job, loose threads and seams, white paint smudges on the black leather, black polish on the brown leather, damaged leather, uneven sewing job. * It's hard to see in the photos but the entire sides of the white rubber soles were painted over with flat white paint which makes me to wonder what mistakes are covered up. And now the shoes reek of strong paint instead of good leather. The communication I had in the shop: When I brought them in, they were short with me but assured me multiple times that they could get the job done right because I asked them multiple times about it to make sure. Replacing the cup sole on a shoe is not the same as a resoling a dress shoe with leather soles. The job was done but not right. read more

Be careful of the shoes you take here. I have had certain things done with success such as heel caps, but I took a pair of very expensive designer shoes here for repair. The chains on the heel were coming loose. The lady at the front said yes for sure they know how to repair it. The first time I went to pick them up, I noted the chains were still hanging off so I showed her she says ok, they will try something else. I will attach a picture of what the shoe is supposed to look like and what I got back from them. They dumped glue all over the chain design on both pairs. The shoes are now permanently damaged. These are Brian Atwood sandals, at resale value, even after use they are still valued at $400, which is a fraction of the original price which was over $1000. VERY disappointed. Yes, it's true. The repairs are top notch and quality. For some boots in need of repair around the front surface area of the heel, there were two options: Fill-In for $18 or Resurface for $150. I chose for the lady the $18 job and she is satisfied. Most shoes are not worth a repair these days. Shoe craftsmanship has changed over the years. But when you spend over $150 on shoes or boots with no leather damage, this is the hospital to get you back on your feet. I just had to make a 'punny' comment. read more

I got my boat shoes shined. Unfortunately I don't take care of them well. The sensation of someone cleaning your shoe while it's on your foot is pretty good. I don't like going to ATM so I was awfully pleased they take plastic at the register. You can observed people's shoes that have gotten redone in addition to shoe laces, shoe creams and other shoe related items. I've come here several times for shoe repair. Not only are they very friendly and knowledgeable, they are priced right, and work fast! I've brought heels in to get new caps and they will have them turned around and ready by the end of the day, looking better than new. They also do leather work here. Kenneth Cole has always been a brand that's been good to me, but when the soles of a pair of dress shoes started separating from the shoes, I had two things to say: 1) I thought these soles were stitched, but by gum, they're... gummed! 2) And if these soles start falling off the shoe as I walk, we're all three going to come unglued! I brought them to the Shoe Hospital to resuscitate them. I didn't have shoe insurance, but the hospital fees were going to be low enough that I wouldn't need to euthanize the shoes. They would be ready the next day; though I decided to give them several additional days for recovery. I love the shoes, but it was freaking cold out that week. When I went to get shoes, they were perfectly healthy again, in fact, healthier than when I brought them in. The surgeon had not only glued the soles back on, but he had also put in at least 30 stitches per shoe. Now that's service much beyond what I expected, and when I talked to the attending surgeon himself, there was no hint of arrogant doctor, only a man with perfect bedside manner making sure I liked what he had done. Now I can only hope that Kenneth learns how to sew again. read more

I had expected steep prices due to its location, size, and reputation, but I was startled to learn that they only charge $15 to stretch boots - less than the tiny little shoe repair shop in my neighborhood. They seemed annoyed to see me and interact with me (but like, in an endearing sort of grumpy old person way), and told me they couldn't do anything I was asking them to do but would do what they could. In fact they exceeded my expectations and then some, so I think their motto is to underpromise and over deliver. I'll be bringing my shoes only here from now on. read more

I took a pair of dress shoes in to the Shoe Hospital for new soles and heels. They looked good when I picked them up. When I tried them on the next day, I found that the leather lining on one of the insoles was inexplicably shredded. I brought the shoes back to the Shoe Hospital and they denied any responsibility. I explained that the insoles were perfectly fine when I dropped them off, and that they had to be responsible. I asked the owner to please repair the damage he created and his initial response was to try sell me a set of replacement insoles. That was obviously unacceptable and I asked him again to repair the damage. He begrudgingly agreed. A few days later, I picked up the shoes and he had replaced one insole with a new leather liner, and left the other one intact-- creating mismatched insoles. I could not care any less what the inside of the shoes look like but they feel very different (it's like wearing two different shoes). I explained to the owner that this was not a good solution and he said to fix this properly would cost me $25 (on top of the $80 I paid for the resoling). That was unacceptable as we're talking about fixing a problem created by the Shoe Hospital. Also, they damaged the outsole in doing this halfway repair. As shown in my photo, the stitching on one of the soles was undone by the Shoe Hospital and not fixed. It was obvious that the owner had no interest in doing a real repair, but why damage the shoe further in the process? After some back and forth, the owner got mad, the conversation became unproductive and I just left. I've had many shoes resoled elsewhere and never encountered a problem like this. AVOID. read more

This is that place. They have replaced straps, heels, buffed out scratches, repaired nicks ....you name it, they will do their best to restore your shoes to their original grandeur. I very rarely leave reviews for places like this. I figure that they either do the job or they don't. which is either zero stars or three. But this place just gained another permanent customer. When I visited them, it was one of the worst days of the week for me. I just started a new teaching gig and I was running to class when I realised that the bottoms of the heels had fallen off. One I could recover, another was gone. When I called the cobbler near my workplace, all he wanted to talk about was the price, and despite the fact that reattaching the heel is a simple procedure, he insisted that I needed to bring the shoes in for him to give a time frame. Nope. I figured that cobblers around LaSalle would probably be better, since there would be more people coming in with heels and bespoke shoes. I called ahead, was given a time frame of 30 minutes, so I rushed in before I had to go meet someone at 5. The guys were courteous, and worked on it immediately, while the guy who shines the shoes gave me a mat while I sat around and waited (for my bare feet). The workmanship on the repair is stellar. They are firmly attached, perfectly cut, and they're both the same height, so I feel at east with this work. I'll definitely come in again when my shoes need repair. If I could give them 10 stars I could. In the day and age where this kind of repair work, be it tailoring, pens, or shoes, is grossly neglected, this shop is a lifesaver for many of us who aren't in the "use them and chuck them" camp. I have to say, I kind of doubted it could be as good as all these glowing reviews, but my regular tailor recommended them to, and they were close to the office, why not? Turns out, $30 and 3 hours later, I had perfect new heels on a pair of favorite dress shoes. I mean...if I didn't tell you, you'd never know they weren't "factory." What an amazing job. And so fast! Literally, dropped them off at noon and picked them up at 4:30, but they were promised ready around 3pm. That's crazytown, I figured I'd be waiting a week or two to get them turned around. Thanks to Yelp, this is now my official go-to place for shoe repairs. I have really large calves since I run a lot. Yes, that's my story, and I'm sticking to it! I'm talking a 15 inch calf circumference. So what do I do? I go online and buy a pair of Gucci boots that have a 13 inch calf circumference. Damn you people that walk on stilts! So what's a girl to do now? Go to Yelp and search "boot stretch" -- that's what you do! Then you go to Shoe Hospital. I was a little reluctant to drop off a pair of expensive boots, but felt relieved to see Manolo Blahniks, Tory Burches, and Christian Louboutins being repaired. This is a good sign, people. A staff member had me try on the boots while he measured the remaining two inches I could no further zip up. I expected him to laugh at me and call me a fatty, but he assured me he adds elastic to boots all the time. The cost was $48 for adding elastic and $25 for adding a sole protector. Total: $72. Fast forward 48 hours, and the boots look AMAZING!! Seriously, I'm not easily moved by many things (reference: my other reviews). The price was worth every penny! My boots fit like they are tailored to me and make me feel like a celebrity. The elastic matches the color of the boot perfectly and it looks like the boot was manufactured that way. Unbelievable. Ah the dream is over. I've been going to the shoe hospital for about 6 years .. as it is by my office, and they have always done excellent work. While not the cheapest option in the city, I've always felt that they are one of the last great shoe repair places. Alas, my experience today made me decide that it will be my last visit. As I usually do every 6 months or so - I brought in 3 pairs of my wife's shoes and one pair of mine. They were all to be cleaned and polished. Two of the women's shoes needed new two new toe peices .. and all the women's shoes had scuffs that needed to be repaired. My quote (which is just always pulled out of thin air) was for $79.. Which I thought was ridiculous..But, they have always done a fantastic job in the past. Taking scuffed up heels and making them look brand new. I picked up the shoes today and all it looked like they did was give them a quick polish. None of the scuffs were repaired like they normally are. I honestly couldn't even understand the lack of actual effort. I was ticked and asked why they didn't repair the scuffs. The guy who owns the place suddenly forgets how to speak English, and was just repeating "not possible." I stressed how exactly they make it possible every otherother time I've been in there over the past 6 years? He basically shrugged his shoulders .. didn't offer to fix the shoes, or offer me a discount. Did I mention I paid $79 for all this?? What a joke. Don't bother with this place - it used to be good, but like most places it is going the route of crappier quality for higher prices. read more

With the pressure the media places on shoes of both genders to meet this unrealistic standard of age-defying taut leather, impossibly firm heels, and an eternally polished glow - it's no wonder that ever more shoes are turning to cosmetic surgery to improve their appearance. With that pressure, I too decided to have a little work done to address some wear and tear. Let me tell you, the staff at Shoe Hospital revolutionized the state of my zapatos way better than the zapatistas could ever dream of revolutionizing the state of Mexico. My heels looked as if they never set foot on this earth. My leather booties came back smooth as a baby's booty. My kicks shined like Eric Lasalle's hair in 'Coming to America' after a fresh coat of Soul Glow. Besides doing a good job, they are discreet. Folks may notice a younger appearance, but they'll never be able tell that you had work done. Why? Because their stitches don't snitch. Your boots were made for walking, but not every footwear injury can be walked off. I have...er...generous legs. As any other woman with 16-inch calves can tell you, this means No Boots For You. On a whim, I bought some knee-high leather boots online, hoping they could be stretched. Unfortunately, the leather was too thick. Dr. Shoe cut a V-shaped slit on the inside of each boot and filled the gap with elastic which nearly matched the leather. I now have gorgeous boots which look like they were custom made for me. My beautiful nylon messenger bag from Germany (in other words, I can't buy another one) frayed at one side, where the strap attached to the body of the bag. He reattached it, and it's actually stronger than the original. Most repairs and leather accessories cleaning is under $50. Those that cost more are definitely worth it, compared to the cost of replacement. read more
