We have lived around the corner my entire life and this is THE BEST sushi / Japanese restaurant we've tried near or far. Itto, the chef is talented and so sweet. The fish is bright and fresh. The service can be slow, but that's because the waitress (I think Itto's wife?) is very old. Honestly it's unbelievable she's still so active! She is also super sweet, strong, and great at what she does. Give her a big tip! Whenever my family feels like eating out, but don't have a place in mind, we can always enthusiastically agree on Shogun. It seems many others feel the same way, as we are never alone in the restaurant. Hot tip - there's parking in the back and you can enter from there too. Order literally anything and you won't be disappointed. Our top faves are caterpillar roll, yakitori, and age-dashi tofu. read more

If someone gave me Shogun sushi in an ordinary suburb of Japan, I would find the it to be quite good. The thing is, we're in the United States, and I can count the number of sushi restaurants with Japanese sushi chefs in the Greater Boston Area on one finger. Ito-san, the sushi chef, came from Japan decades ago, and has been quietly but with pride creating sushi. While there are many rolls that are sure to please the Boston-area folks, its the sushi I eat here that reminds me of my childhood in Japan. Going back to my first paragraph, the sushi Ito-san produces would probably be judged as above-average sushi you'd find at any sushi store in the Japanese suburbs. But the fact that I can get that kind of quality sushi here in the United States is tremendously amazing. The restaurant may seem unassuming at first, and complaints that service may be slow have merit -- there's usually only one or two (Japanese) servers, who while are trying their best, are challenged by the sheer fact that there are a lot of tables in the restaurant. Yet, what these reviewers are missing out on is how authentic the sushi is. I am certainly biased as a Japanese person here, but I cannot help but treasure Shogun for the quality of sushi it produces. Shogun Restaurant reminds me perfectly of my home. read more

So, the fish was great... super fresh, but the overall experience wasn't great. Service was so so and a bit slow (one server, one sushi chef, one kitchen chef). The fish really was good and fresh, but rolls didn't have a ton of flavor and their Chirashi was actually a bit small for normal ones. The miso doesn't have tofu, but has mushrooms, it was very good but if you are looking for the normal miso, this wont do it. Interior is a bit dingy... place is getting old. read more

LONG STORY BUT INTERESTING!! Been here 2-3 times back in college, I was a Japanese international student then when I lived in West Newton. The last time I had an HUGE issue with the Sushi chef. I ordered for take out via phone, they said it'll take 45minutes for the food to be ready. Perfect. Being aware of that, I also had to go to CVS down the street so 25 minutes or so after I called Shogun I went to the restaurant intending to pay before hand and then go to CVS and spend 20minutes or so there and then hopefully pick up the food and be on my way. That was the plan. I entered the restaurant with my friend, it was quiet busy, The Japanese female owner greeted me and I told her I called for pickup. She didnt remember me but thats perfectly fine. I spoke in english I came pay first and come back later and pick up the food. She understood no problem and started speaking in Japanese to the staff "Customer ## is here!" Then comes the problem. The sushi chef starts asking questions in Japanese in a very dark intimidating manner to his staff while preparing sushi. "Hey how long did I say that Customer ##'s (me) food was gonna be ready?" Young Japanese staff replies "45minutes sir". Chef says "Exactly! so what is this kid doing here 20minutes after ordering ?(asking rhetorically) " (分かりません,meaning I dont know) replies the young staff. And then he asks another employee the same rhetorical thing. Mind you Im Japanese, from Tokyo who speaks fluent Japanese and im listening to this guy intensely questioning behind my back while im standing directly across the sushi bar and he's slicing away. Since Im understanding everything im in shock/awkward position, I immediately tell the female owner in English that I came to pay first and want to go to CVS and come back later. She tells the sushi chef to calm down in Japanese because Im here to pay first and plans to pick up the food later but hes not having it and hes pissed. Now it would of been a good idea for me to start speaking Japanese but it would of made it extremely awkward. For some peculiar reason unlike other asians Japanese people abroad dont speak Japanese to other restaurants/business staff even if ur sure their Japanese (shy culture). Anyways I made it one step awkward and paid with my Japanese credit card which has Japanese written everywhere with my Japanese name. The atmosphere in the back of the kitchen got tense... Lady owner doesnt know what to do so she awkwardly smiles and I sign my receipt and I said "I'll be back". As I exit lady quietly tells the chef he "HE KNOWS WHAT YOUR SAYING STOP! HES JAPANESE!". So I head to CVS telling my friend that the sushi chef is pissed but he didnt have any clue due to the chef's passive but yet enraged Japanese behavior. Anyways we shop at CVS come back to Shogun once I open the door a younger man hands me the food like he was waiting for me and I say a simple "どうも/Domo" (Light thanks). And leave. The sushi was...meh.... the sushi wasn't good. Not to act like a philosophical food critic but actual sushi has to be prepared with care and passion there was none. Sloppy nigiri you could feel his displeasure towards me......Also after that drama I lost my appetite since I felt pretty humiliated. I ordered a lot of food as well probly $40-50ish Its a shame because the first time I went there a few years before this visit, I actually spoke to them in Japanese and I ordered Katsu-don (deep fried pork bowl) and I told the lady owner it tastes like home... That being said I did feel like I was back in Japan from this experience, poker face exterior but internally consists of rage that will not be confronted. read more

I love Shogun. I've been coming here for a couple of decades and it never disappoints. The service can be a little sloow but if you're in a hurry go get a McFish sandwich. Ito-San, the sushi chef, is very friendly and if he's not super busy he'll answer your dumb questions and educate you about Japanese food. Ito-san, you the man! Shogun has the best salad dressing (worth the trip alone!!!) I'm partial to the sushi rolls. The roll set and the sushi special is delish as is chicken donburi but my absolute favorites are the spicy salmon skin roll and the spicy eel and avacado roll. The Second Wife roll is quite tasty, too. Shogun was often the requested reward/treat for my kids when they were young and it's still a birthday lunch tradition today, They're all in their mid 20s now, Seiji Ozawa, when he lived in West Newton, was a regular. He could often be seen stopping in to pick up his take-out order. I love Shogun. read more

If I was dying, I'd be hard-pressed to choose between this restaurant and my favorite Indian buffet as my last supper. Really depends on my mood. If I want Japanese food, there is no other option. Heck, I've been to Fugaku and eating at shogun made me forget other Japanese restaurants exist! Free tea, the same staff year round, you always know what to expect. Fantastic food, a friendly and funny sushi chef, and a pleasant hour. The food is amazing, and you never leave feeling heavy. That has to be my favorite part. I eat a HUGE amount (an obento box!) and don't feel like I'm ready to give birth. Speaking of Obento Box, you may want to give one a try. The salad dressing is the best I've ever had. It is balanced and well priced, especially at lunch. All of this coming from a well educated Japanese food lover. My mom lived in Japan for years until I was born, so I was raised on this stuff. So, Shogun's been around since I was in high school and since '98, it's undergone an ownership change. Ito-San's still tending the sushi bar but the place has been renewed so to speak so the atmosphere seems more fresh and modern than what I remember. The menu has also expanded...both the sushi list and the entree list. Of the sushi spots in the Boston area, my date and I would argue that Shogun's menu is more true to authentic Japanese tastes than the many of the others covering the range of basic tastes (bitterness, sweetness, saltiness, sourness, umami) really well. The prices don't break the bank either. Service is a bit slow, and the area is crowded in terms of parking but overall a dinner at Shogun is very good value. read more

Went this past weekend with my boyfriend and really good friend visiting from Philly. I was in the mood for Japanese, and have always driven by Shogun, so decided to spring for it! I was surprised at how bright it was in the restaurant (it was really light in there!), and the staff was a bit overwhelmed by the party of 15 that was there. But the sushi was amazingly fresh! You HAVE to get the appetizer of octopus, cucumber, and seaweed in a light vinegar sauce. AMAZING. We had a selection of super fresh fish - the yellowtail seriously melted in my mouth. MELTED. The dinner ended up taking a bit longer than expected just because the staff really was overwhelmed with the party, but they were just so good natured and so sweet. And you can tell that everything was made with love! The place was packed the entire time we were there - definitely a sign as to how good it is! read more

This was the worst meal I've had perhaps ever: -Setting: filthy - from the sticky menus, to the stained tablecloths, to the gritty glasses/dishes, to the cracked/caked soy sauce bottles. -Food: easily the worst sushi I have had in 20 years of eating it - barely edible. The rolls were stacked in an odd way to hide the lack of fish, the spider roll was 1/4 of a mushy crab, the fish was unpleasant, the rolls were so poorly constructed they fell apart on the plate, and the rice had such a strange/old/stale flavor it was honestly difficult to eat. The ginger dressing is a runny mess, the miso soup bore little resemblance to what it should be, and the noodles smelled so bad we couldn't eat them. Lest you think some wine would wash down the "bad taste," Kendall Jackson at $9 for a 3 oz. pour is your only option. -Service: sloppy and inconsiderate. Two tables came in after us and had their drinks delivered and food orders taken before we were asked for our drink order. The soup and salad were completely forgotten and we awkwardly waited more than ten minutes along with our neighbors for the non-sushi entrees to subsequently arrive - no apologies were made for this delay. The server in the backwards baseball cap could not be bothered to bring us more water, or let us order more overpriced wine. And he certainly had no interest in listening to our concern about the food or request that some accommodation be made for the awful experience. This place left a bad taste in our mouths in many ways. I wouldn't be compelled to leave such a candid review if they had shown an ounce of care for our experience. If you're craving sushi in the area, for the same price you can have a drastically improved experience at Aji up the street. read more

I came here last night with a good friend for dinner.. First off we drove around like 5 times just trying to find the place... Kind of annoying. Secondly there really isn't that much parking... I thought the food was all right. I wasn't impressed with the presentation of the food. The sushi wasn't in a nice neat roll. I had avocado sticking out and the tuna was cut a little thick. I also got a bowl of chicken and noodles. Wasn't a huge fan of that either. It was not worth the 15 bucks that i paid for it. There was hardly any chicken in it.. Maybe like 2 small pieces.. i grew up in w.newton and have lived in waltham for 6-7 years, I've been meaning to get food at Shogun for the last... i don't even know how many years, finally I ordered takeout from there tonight! And it was worth the wait ;) We got sashimi dinner combo and added salad, rice, and miso soup. great sashimi, super fresh and well put together assortment. miso soup was also very tasty, not the usual seaweed/scallion combo, this one also had mushrooms. the salad came with their own miso/ soy sauce dressing with fresh orange wedges, a nice break from the usual orange/ginger. usually i'm not all that impressed with sushi rice, but this this rice was delish. this is my new goto spot for sashimi :) read more

I've been here a couple of times over the past year. The food is very nice, the fish is fresh, tasty, and well prepared but no frills. The service on the other hand, while friendly and courteous, was very slow. The last time I came here it felt like the entire place was served by one waitress who was constantly on the run trying to get everyone what they needed. They have some good food, but service is terrible. For terrible, I mean the long wait time. I have been here few times because my wife and daughter loves Teriyaki Donburi. I usually order Nabeyaki Uodon. For the few times I have been here, I had to wait average of 30 minutes (one time I have waited 45 minutes after ordering the food) in all the times I have been there before food came out. The reason I come to restaurant is to order food and eat within reasonable times. I think my rice cooker take 30 minutes to cook rice, so I don't know what take them so long. Ok, now the food... Donburis are usually good and I like them, but the noodle in Udon is overcooked and shrimp tempura that is on top is like web noodle, not crispy. It shows that it has been boiling too long for no reason. I am disappointed every time I visit here, but I come here because of my wife. Not recommended if you want to have your meal in reasonable time. read more

It's a humble setting; small, never much of a crowd, and the sushi is very, very good. If you care more about the food than the ambiance and love sushi, this is your spot. The fish is remarkably fresh such that you notice the taste. It's solid, and flavorful. The sushi is cut naturally, the pieces are a little uneven -- which I like. The food is so good, the atmosphere so relaxed and friendly that you are very likely to have a good meal here. The price is high but not unreasonable for sushi. I love this restaurant. Even when the tables are so close together that you literally rub elbows with the stranger next you, you don't care because the food is that good. Don't come here if you are in a rush to get somewhere. There is only one person rolling/making the sushi order and I think one person cooking the other items in the kitchen. You have been warned. There is also some street parking and meter parking in the back lots. The fish tastes very fresh and the menu items more on the traditional side. My husband did think that there was way too much rice on his maki rolls for his taste, but in my opinion, I loved the rice to fish ratio. Wonderful sushi rolls! We had a variety of rolls - giant roll, spicy tempura roll, rainbow roll, tuna lover's roll, and a spicy tuna roll. All of them were amazing, especially the spicy tempura roll. The presentation was beautiful of all the rolls and they were made quite fast! The staff was also incredibly friendly - everyone says hi as you walk in and out. It was fairly empty on a Tuesday night - it's a small place with about 10 tables or so. Closed on Mondays, but everyone should try this place!!!! The fish was extremely fresh, and I've never had such amazing salmon. I swear it melted in my mouth. The flavors were spot on, and I could tell that this was a Japanese run establishment. The special roles were unique, and everything sounded great on the menu. Our waitress was very nice, but the service was on the slow side. It took a while for our check and our sashimi appetizer. Also, the rolls were falling apart fairly easily and the sashimi was not cut very smoothly. However, I feel like that's nit picking since I enjoyed the quality of the ingredients and flavors so much. Be prepared to wait, but waiting is worth it if you have the time because the sushi/sashimi is pretty good for Boston. I ordered a Nabeyaki Udon once and I don't really recommend it. The presentation was nice, but it wasn't very flavorful and the noodles were not impressive. I usually order the Chirashi-don, which is my favorite.
