Living on the east coast exploring the sushi was probably the best, fresh fish more competition cheaper the rolls. Traveling back to Texas was a struggle to find great sushi. Let me tell you the father you are away from the ocean the crappier the fish. Salmon should be pinkish red not orange (learned that from my Japanese friends) and let me tell you! It's fatty melt in your mouth fishy goodness. Out of West Texas. The drive to Abilene TX is worth your money and time to hit up Tokyo Fusion the most amazing fresh fish you will find. Not to mention their staff is excellent. This sushi place in Angelo (Shogun) has the highest reviews but I'm sure it's problem not the sushi bar that's a big hit, they rob you of your money by giving you thinest see threw sashimi. Not to mention it takes them an hour just to de-thaw the fish and forget to read your whole order, the staff needs to learn good hygiene. I'm giving them 2 Stars For 1. Ummmm....I may be crazy...but this is one of the best places I have ever eaten sushi. And it's in west Texas, wtf. Sushi chefs are super nice. The musty smell that hits you when you walk in is reason enough alone to leave but being desperate to find some great food in this town we stuck it out. I found a spiderweb on my chair. I was also really put off by our waitress Miriam. She was incredibly unfriendly and wouldn't even make eye contact with us. She made it clear she didn't care about the experience we were having so I didn't even bother to tell her she messed up our orders. The miso soup tastes like the juice in ramen noodles, ginger dressing is terrible, and the tepan was so over salted and my shrimp was over cooked to the point were it tasted pre-chewed. I've only had the sushi here, so I can't comment on the grill section of the menu. The sushi was reasonably good, though I found the nori wrappers a bit tougher than I'm accustomed to. The portions are quite large though, making Shogun a reasonable value. There are some good teppan-yaki restaurants in this town like Ichi-ban but there was no good sushi restaurant IMHO so far. well... not anymore!! To me, Shogun sushi is acceptable level. If you go to San Antonio or other big cities, you can have better sushi but at least this place is the best sushi restaurant in San Angelo. Though this restaurant isn't run by Japanese, their sushi rice is the original flavor what I mentioned on the other page so if you like original Japanese sushi, this place is for you. We decided to give it a shot since we wanted sushi and a seaweed salad. We sat at the table but it was sticky so we sat by the bar. The waiter sucked because I asked her for a shrimp avocado and cucumber roll and she kept telling me its the shrimp tempura.($7.95) I don't pay that much for a simple roll. I have been to Shogun twice and love it. The filet mignon was delicious and I love getting the soup and salad. My kids of course love the show! I removed a star because the woman who sat us was rude and when the cook came out saying something about an extra 8.00 charge one someones meal they snapped at each other and it was an awkward exchange...."Hi customer here..right in front of you!" the coke also tasted really off the second time I visited. My mom and I love shogun. We will sit at the grill and all of the chefs are so nice. The food is delicious and they have great portions. I can get the chicken dinner 2 chicken breasts about a cup of rice and a cup of vegetables just for $13.45. If you love Japanese food then you need to come try shogun. read more

We sat at the sushi bar instead of the grills. The sushi was creative and delicious. The hibachi was also really good. They accommodated my request for no onions and the vegetables were better than I'm used to elsewhere. I rarely finish the salad or the soup, it's not really my thing. The portions were big enough that we had leftovers of both sushi and hibachi and they were great later. Service was good enough, could have been just a bit more attentive. The manager was aware of what was going on, stopped by, joked with us and immediately got me the sauces I was missing for my hibachi. This place was not worth what I paid. We stopped by today at the insistence of my husband who was in the mood for sushi. We know that nothing in San Angelo is going to be what we're used to back in our home state. We walked in and saw that we were the only ones besides a group of men who were sitting at a grill with no one cooking food--something I found odd. We sat at the bar and ordered two teriyaki chicken rolls (one regular one and one with a few tweaks). My husband got a cup of green tea. I should mention that our waitress wasn't the friendliest person in the world. My husband described her later as seeming hungover and I'd say that's fitting to how she was acting. Anyways, we got our food after about 10-15 minutes. We'd been given miso soup, but neither of us is a huge fan of miso soup anywhere so we barely touched it. I will say that our rolls were good. Then, the waitress dropped the bill off to my husband with a "Here ya go, sir." when in fact I was the one paying. Oh well.. then, my eye caught the bill. It was $22.50 for our two tiny rolls and one cup of tea! With tip, and I only left $3, it was over $25. I wish I hadn't tipped at all. The service was pretty lousy. Maybe I set the bar too high for San Angelo. I just moved here from San Francisco and was craving some Asian food so I searched Yelp and decided to give Shogun a try. I was really hungry (all I had were a few honey tangerines the whole day) and couldn't decide whether I wanted to do the grill or sushi so I opted for the grill since my stomach was thinking it would be more food and I could always order sushi on the side. I should have asked if they charge for HOT TEA before ordering it instead of assuming that it was complimentary like most Asian restaurants (it end up being $2.50 for a green tea bag in a mug). I ordered a TIGER ROLL ($10.95) and the CHICKEN & SHRIMP ($20.95). The sushi was good, but the items on the grill were only mediocre. The grill menu items included complimentary MISO SOUP (tasted like instant miso soup), SALAD (which was just lettuce with dressing) and RICE (can choose between fried or steamed but the default must be fried because the waiter didn't ask me what I wanted and everybody at the table ended up with fried rice). The chef definitely lacked experience. He was okay at spinning the utensils but when he tried to spin an egg on the grill, it cracked. While he was making fried rice, he had rice flying off the grill onto the table, making it look like we, customers, made the mess. He also had some trouble picking up the onion rings when making the volcano. He started off making the fried rice, then grilling the meat and finally stir frying the vegetables. I thought it was a little backward since nobody at the table ate the rice until they were served meat which means the rice got cold by the time they got to it. The fried rice had too much soy sauce. The chicken was overdone. I don't know what I was thinking when I was ordering, but chicken (usually means white meat) which translates into dry when cooked. The shrimp wasn't cleaned well and still had its gut attached. The veggies included onions, mushrooms, carrots and cucumber. Dousing the food with sauce would have probably improved the taste. I might go back for sushi but definitely not for the grill. For $40+ I was definitely not impressed. read more

I went here this evening with my boyfriend. The restaurant only had two other groups. We were sat by the hostess almost immediately, but no one came to even take our drink order. This joint is suffering. If you're new to sushi then don't let this be your first place. They pack the rolls with cheap imitation crab and cream cheese so they can skimp out on the fish. Love the food! The Yum Yum sauce is the best. However the staff is not so great, there is probably one waitress we really enjoy and is attentive but for the most part they are not good waiters. Can't comment on the Sushi but we always sit at the grill and really enjoy most of the Chefs. The food is really very good if they could replace the bad staff it would be better. One of the draw backs is they will try to squeeze you in at random tables instead of seating you where there is plenty of room. The soup and salad are great! Best hibachi in San Angelo! The baked Louisiana roll, fried rice, and scallops are perfect every time. They also have yum yum sauce which is a must for my family. I would definitely recommend Shogun over the other two hibachi restaurants in San Angelo. Edit - for the most part everything is still excellent except the last two times we had dinner there they burned our scallops... It won't deter us from returning but I won't be ordering the scallops again. If not for that they would get 5 stars from me. read more

I would be okay not ever dining there again, but hey I go back out of boredom. The hot entree's (not grill) are pretty nasty, but the Sushi makes up for it 100 times over. I will say though for the same price and quality, I can go to HEB and have a roll made up. The miso soup is pretty good as well as the beef tataki which has never disappointed.. Service is okay, not great, you won't really see or talk to the server, but they keep up with your order pretty well. I do think it is slightly, okay completely, overpriced and for two people to have one appetizer, tea, 2 rolls of sushi a piece and MAYBE an extra thing of sauce, can easily be $70 and up. read more
