I've essentially given up writing reviews about supermarkets, which, if memory serves me correctly, I was kind of obsessive about during the Covid era (which is a bit of a misnomer, as Covid is still around-- I had it a few weeks ago). I reviewed which supermarkets had more of the items I wanted, which ones practiced Covid "safety" initiatives (like making aisles go in 1 direction), etc. I also remember being obsessed with the customer service skills of clerks-- which ones acknowledged me with at least a smile, had a few pleasant words, or said nothing at all, or looked at me like they were trying, with every fiber of their being, to keep from jumping over the cash register to assault me. Times have changed. I bring my own bags now, bag my own groceries. I don't lose sleep these days over whether the clerk is friendly or borderline hostile or completely indifferent. I tend to go to the same few supermarkets and marvel only at how the prices of everything continue to climb (so much for the promises of an orange vampire but let me stop before I meander my way over into a political harangue combining elements of rage, astonishment, fear and despair). I've been coming to Princeton periodically for decades (primarily for the Princeton Record Exchange these days) and I have been in this shopping center a few times. Once, decades ago, to visit a book store (the name escapes me now, but it wasn't Borders, which I don't think existed yet, or Barnes & Noble; whatever the name of it was, it's long gone). Once to see a movie with a friend ("Little Odessa" with Tim Roth). The movie theater is still here, which is gratifying. And 1 time to shop at the Shop Rite after visiting Princeton. That was years ago, and I don't remember what prompted the visit. I don't remember it made all that much of an impression on me. A bag or 2 of groceries and then home. This time, I was coming back from Princeton, and I still had food shopping to do. Maybe it's just advancing old age, and a growing sense of exhaustion when faced with the simplest tasks, but the thought of driving all the way back to Basking Ridge and then heading out to the local Shop Rite, or the Stop & Shop, filled me with an enervating dread (I was a few days away from being diagnosed with Covid, which perhaps explains it). I pulled into the parking lot here, figuring it would probably be best to just get it out of the way. Parking spaces were fairly plentiful. I grabbed a cart, my 2 empty bags (I carry a few in my car) and headed inside. This Shop Rite is pretty big. Thankfully, it wasn't too crowded. I found pretty much everything I needed, and then some. I usually buy 2 pre-packaged salads for lunch (I find salads very, very boring, but I am making some efforts to eat healthier). The pre-packaged salads here seem to be a different brand than I normally buy, have a better grade of lettuce, and contain additional items like pomegranate seeds, berries, etc. I also buy pre-packaged slices of lean chicken. The pre-packaging for the chicken here seemed to be of a better quality than I normally get, as did the chicken itself. I bought a jar of Russian borscht soup, which I've always really liked (I acquired a taste for it when dining in NYC Slavic restaurants years and years ago), and haven't had in a while. And, to top it off, they carried a 6-pack of Stewart's grape soda in bottles. I'm not a big soda drinker (I try to keep it down to 1 small bottle a week) but I really, really like grape soda. The Shop Rite near me had it once or twice several years ago, and never since. Do the people in Basking Ridge not like Stewart's grape soda? I guess not. Checking everything out was relatively simple. The clerk wasn't overly friendly but didn't radiate bored malevolence either. Also, I found the prices of my groceries to be surprisingly reasonable. Willi I be rushing back here to do my grocery shopping in future? No. But I've come to look on grocery shopping overall as an ordeal just short of getting a tooth extracted, a necessary but depressing and increasingly expensive activity. This store was good but recently the quality has dropped tremendously. Recently got meat from there. It was from the reduced for quick sale section . Wanted to cook As soon as I got home . I opened the package, it was completely rotten. I threw it out . Went back to the store for a refund, but They were reluctant . Very bad experience read more

First time for everything! I'm a frequent shopper but today was very disappointing! The cashier did not even( TRY) to help me bag. I was confused so I asked if they were no longer allowed to bag? Some of the help they are not very courteous. Recently, I purchased a package of turkey meat that was on sale for 499 and I went to the register it rang up at 7:29. I went to courtesy counter to get a refund and I was told the barcodes didn't match up. I showed them a picture of the price tag underneath the package of turkey meat. I just kept getting pushed back so I took a refund and left. As soon as Whole Foods opens across the street I'll be shopping there from now on. read more

Tucked into an ancient strip mall, the ShopRite in Skillman has the chain's formula down to a tee -- groceries piled to the sky against a sepia-toned ambiance that says you're going to need a mariners sextant to find what you're looking for. If you close your eyes you can almost see the "greatest generation" housewives in their polyester house dresses pushing their carts up and down the dingy aisles, circa 1972, hoping to catch a deal on Marlboro cartons, SPAM, Cool Whip and an astronaut's sized bottle of Tang powder. So why the four stars? Especially, as prices here offer little solace from the ravages of inflation. In a word... solitude. There's so few people here that it's always an easy in and out with minimal fuss. I just kinda like that. Call me crazy and pass the SPAM. read more

The absolute worst! Dirty, poorly stocked & down right mean, rude staff! Avoid at all cost

I have been shopping here for 12 years and I really like the place. They typically have a good variety. Can't do much about inflation. My issue is the new software in self-checkout, they now need more staff to man the self-checkout because of "requiring assistance" due to brushing up against the counter, or some other rando thing. Also, twice now, i have gone at lunch time and the salad bar is empty or half completed and I'm told it's because the person behind the deli is responsible and is by herself today. This is inexcusable. There are people standing around in Cust Service, etc. Setup the salad bar!!! Both times I have driven there specifically for the salad bar and couldn't get any salad. Went to this Shoprite and paid for over $50 worth of groceries. Realized they overcharged me on nectarines, so I took a picture of the price on the shelf and went to customer service. And..."Oh Boy!"...the amount of scrutiny it took to credit me $1.20. Shoprite has a "ScanRite" policy that's supposed to give you an item for free if they charge you wrong and I had to get interrogated by the customer service rep. on when the picture was taken of the price. She wanted to see the date/time of the picture on my phone. ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS!!! The customer service agent could have just walked 20 feet to confirm the price. I then had to go thru two managers...the front-end manager and then the store manager on duty at the time..."Mr. G". Again, more scrutiny by them...weighing the nectarines; touching the product with his dirty hands; checking the price over and over again on their systems. When "Mr. G" realized it was the wrong price they charged me, he wouldn't abide by the ScanRite policy. At this point, after half an hour, I was done arguing. The store acted like I was ripping them off when it was the other way around. I know mistakes happen and when it does, it's corrected in a few minutes. The time and ATTITUDE here is obscene!!! Wrote two emails to Ed Turkot (SVP of Saker Shoprite - owner of this location) about this situation and no replies...from anyone. SEEMS LIKE BAD CUSTOMER SERVICE STARTS AT THE TOP!!! I have been a shoprite customer at this location for nearly 20 years. After the pandemic I started using curbside pick up/delivery on a regular occasion. Especially when planning for a party so I can use the cart as a list to plan. The last 3 orders have been a nightmare. They don't have the staff at night time they still accept orders during this time slot. You get there and wait 45 mins in your car and then have to go in anyway and they never apologize or say anything about the $4.99 they charge you to bring it to your car. Most recently we were picking up a very small order for dinner on a work night. After waiting half hour in the car and calling with no help my son went in and they swore they did not have an order in our name. He had to say I see it from here it's right there. I placed another order and by my own fault placed a second order duplicating my order. I called ahead and asked them to return the duplicate items and give me store credit for the returned items so I could shop for what I still needed. When I got there I was spoken to in a very rude way by a manager I think her name is Donna but I could be wrong. she was angry because someone on their team forgot to take a few of the returned items out of the bag, like it was my fault somehow. She said she had to check to make sure they did not reimburse me "too much money" I then went to customer service with the bags she placed in a cart as well as my items that I wanted to purchase. I paid for all of my items and even reminded the lady of an item she forgot to ring up in the confusion. I went home and carried up all of the groceries to find that the pictured items were all missing. I called and spoke to Bella and said I can't come back but if my mom came could she give them to her. When my mom went they said they will not give me my items and said they need to review the tapes to make sure I didn't get them already. On top of that I needed them for my sons birthday menu Monday night and had to repurchase things I have already paid for and they are probably in a bag somewhere at ShopRite. Now I'm out more money and still don't have the food I already paid for. Not to mention Donna has a horrible attitude and is making it seem like I am trying to pull something over when all I want is the food I paid for. I am a single mother and can't afford to give away my groceries for free. They are taking their sweet time to "check the cameras" but when they do or when they find the bag with my items I hope they apologise for accusing me of stealing. Now I have to buy more groceries to make dinner this week until Donna and security finds the time to make sure I'm not stealing extra cans of soup and pasta Me a customer of 20 years that has given them so much business including the curb side fees when I went in to get them myself. read more

12/10/2023 noon, I went shopping for grocery at this place. The whole shopping experience was fine until it came to check out. It was a disaster and nightmare. Two self-checkout assistants were there to support, one young male and one old female. The female assistant knew nothing to support, first I noticed another customer was doing checkout with some issues, she wasn't trying to help but went crook at the customer due the the self-check out machine didn't function well. Soon our machine had same issue, keeping pop up need assistant attention. At that moment I realized why in holiday season, people avoid the self-checkout machine still go with cashiers even in a long line. They knew the machines do not do the work properly. I was trying the get the young assist but he was busy with others, so I had to call the female assist, she came first, but the machine keep doing the pop up attention. We were not able to continue finishing the check out. I was asking: " Are there something wrong with the machine. because, I noticed the other machine had same issue." I was trying to suggest that maybe need technician's attention. She was impatiently to say nothing wrong, because we didn't do it correctly. After finished checkout， I went to customer service to let them knew the self-checkout machine's issue. However, two customer representative, a male and female were trying to ignore me. The "Manager" on duty at 6p.m on 8/15 is the one of the rudest people I have ever met. He was dismissive, did not want to answer any questions and then told me to leave the store or he was going to call the police. This is all because the ATM machine did not dispensed the incorrect amount of money and when I tried to find out how I was going to get my money back, he either did not want to assist me or could not assist me. The store is understaffed. Employees appear stressed and rude to customers. The store is open till 11 pm but many shelves were empty at 10 pm.It appeared that staff was eager to close early and had started to rwmove perishables from the shelves. I pointed it out to the customer service with a request to help me with the items I needed. I simply do not understand the low ratings that others have given this Shoprite in Montgomery. I think it's a wonderful store. We've shopped there and only there for about 25 years even though I live in Princeton and could shop more local. It's clean. Prices are relatively good. Everyone who works there has always been kind and helpful to me. And they smile and say hi when we pass in the aisles. The deli gal always offers me "ends" for my kitties and other critters. All the food etc. is well organized, in fact I make my shopping list in the order I encounter items going from right to left through the store. And I love the music they play. Some of my favorite house plants I found there. It's fun to shop there. Parking is easy. read more

Very packed, dated supermarket. Prices are decent and there's a wide selection but disorganized. I have a foot injury and have been using their motorized shopping carts and while I appreciate they have them, the aisles are so narrow and there are so many obstacles - carts strewn around, etc. - that many times i simply couldn't turn a corner and it took me twice as long to get around as it would have in a normal supermarket. This is not ADA accessible! For that alone, one star. read more

Most of the employees in the Montgomery Shop-Rite are good about wearing their masks covering both their nose and mouths, but there are a couple of maskholes working there who either don't take it seriously or are covertly rebelling. With COVID rates still high in NJ, their covidiot behavior is unacceptable. One of them is apparently supervisor. Some example for his employees! EDIT: I've since learned that the stock workers (the worst offenders) don't actually work for the store. They're hired by the companies that deliver the merchandise. And those are "felon friendly" employers. I've asked Wakefern (the parent company of Shop-Rite) to look into the situation and have heard nothing. For my own safety and the safety of my family, I've given up on all Shop-Rites and have taken my business to a different supermarket that takes COVID more seriously. read more

Today went to shoprite. Had to check out at customer service because items I was buying had to be over written on price. When I got there Muhanad at the register decided he didn't want to be helpful in anyway. I told him about the price change he went to pick up a flyer to show me he doesn't see it. Then I explain it was set up my management his answer was that manager wasn't working today so I probably won't get the price. Mind you I never said any managers name. Then when called manager on duty he was told to give me the price. Which seamed to really piss him off. Then he saw I had other items with me many but small items he counted them even the 10 single chocolate bars and told me too many items he will not ring them up. I need to have less items so I then said ok then I'll only buy this few amount so I'm not over the limit for customer service where I didn't see a limit listed. Then he got more pissed off that I'm making him work harder because he will have to put back the items. I said then why not let me buy them when you told me your not going to ring them up. So I asked to speak to manager. While waiting he was very rude telling me too bad he doesn't have to help me and I should go get in line at other registers. Yelled at me that he's a human being. Mind you I didn't yell at him I didn't use any curse words nothing that would give reason to go off on a customer at customer service. Manager finally came over said yes that's a lot of items but ring him up so we don't continue arguing ( nice right). So Muhanad decided every frozen bag item I have that he would smack it down on counter after ringing up each item. Manager stood and watch said nothing. When I asked him about the rudeness and the harassing he said he will talk to him about it. But addressed nothing at the time of what he was doing in front of him. People do not want to be harassed when they go for groceries especially at customer service?? This review was 11 months ago I usually find moldy fruit so check it before buying it especially the strawberries. Have found meat that has turned brown with green oil lines from spoiling. Have tried for over a half a year to place orders for soda have had such problems have contacted owner as well as shoprite headquarters. To this day I managed once to actually get an order in. I have given up trying and now look at other locations to do my shopping. My favorite experience was when I asked to speak with a manager and was told they were the only manager on duty and on break so I would not be seeing them. Then months later another manager wouldn't bother when trying to find out about soda order. Oh also watch buying the rotisserie chicken breast it has so much water in the packaging its practically floating, and the price includes the water. I poured it out and asked for it to be weighed. A 2 1/2 lbs breast lost a half a pound from the water being removed!!! Last week I purchased shellfish it ended up being rotten. When I brought it back to the store the manager on shift decided it was fine and there's nothing wrong with it. I asked to speak to another manager and he stated there was no other managers. I found out the seafood manager was in went back with customer service to show that manager. He smelled the ammonia and stated it was bad. It took a week for the general manager to care enough to contact me about what happened and only after I had to contact the corporate and the ownership. Her reply was she assured me they are always concerned about customer satisfaction and well being. Then told me that a deal I was given for past problem was now no longer valid with no reason given. The general manager was more concerned about the customer complaint then the problem. In other words if I listened to the manager took it back home and are it got sick went to hospital then I wouldn't be punished for bringing up a problem with spoiled seafood. read more

Tonight, the Garden Salad bar staff, Alan told me that he couldn't answer any questions of mine about the salad bar staff as he quoting him" didn't have to answer any customer questions while he was on break" nor told me as the customer, whom I could ask questions to, about the Salad Bar, even when I asked him. He acted like I was bothering him. Even the Deli staff next door were all much friendlier than Alan was, but were not in thei job authority to help me. In the Salad Bar, it was very sparse in its foil containers, in where they were only 1/3 filled with only kind of lettuce (very leafy and grainy), but no option of any romaine lettuce or any choice of loose lettuce. I informed a female Asst Front End Manager who agreed with me of the Garden Salad Staff Alan's lack of professionalism. read more

I have been a customer for many years and have seen many changes- many for the good. Organic options are not for 'niche' customers- they are of growing importance given the ever increasing data on harm from exposure to pesticides and special dietary options are necessary for many people with specific health concerns need to ensure good nutrition for them. There are plenty of options for those who either do not want or can't afford to buy organic all the time. I have no seen baggers so customers usually have to work a little themselves- not a big deal and I actually prefer it so I can bag and organize the way I want to. It's a win-win and of course if someone needs help or cannot bag, staff is always helpful. Most importantly, the staff generally work very hard. Especially these days when people are hoarding and being generally in a panic- and with some store employees choosing not to work or not being able to, the staff that has remained working at ShopRite are often working double shifts, dealing with customers who are sometimes irrational and irate, and are at probably a decent rate of exposure to disease just by the sheer number of people they come into close contact with. And the workers I see are not the young people who used to work there to earn extra money for iPods and movies when I was a teen- these are middle-age to senior-age folks, including many who are more at risk for complications than others. They are there on time, restocking as stuff comes in, helping those who need it, and trying to stay healthy themselves. There are always employees - in every company- who are lazy or just unmotivated. I have to say there was one cashier the other day who was just not very pleasant but who knows what sort of day they'd had. They weren't rude and they did their job- just not really enthusiastically. Again- not a big deal. And one should speak up- contructively- when really poor work is noted. But it is really easy to criticize and just see the bad- we also need to seek out the good, praise those who do a good job, and - now more than ever perhaps- really appreciate those who are dedicated and maybe take the time to be extra nice ourselves- when someone is just not pleasant or seems irritated, just take a moment to acknowledge them, note that their job must be pretty stressful now with people and cleaning all the time and being on their feet all day- give them a smile. A little compassion goes a long way. read more

The store needs to know how to treat customers nicely, especially the store makes a mistake. It happened to me and my whole family twice in the late evenings. The same female front manager not only didn't show any courtesy, but also treated us very rudely. Long story short: a male check out staff entered the wrong code of a 15 bottle case for the 12 bottle one. The front manager's explanation was the price only for 12 separate bottles rather than a whole 12 bottle case?? I said the receipt showed 15 bottle case. She said whatsoever no return and refund until the following day because the customer service is closed. This harsh attitude reminded my whole family the same bad experience not a while ago. By the way, the first time my wife had to make an extra trip to solve the problem. Luckily, this time another female manager kindly helped us to solve the problem-simply add three more bottles to the 12 bottle case in the SAME evening. Honestly, the store really should train and choose a capable person to be a leader. Otherwise, sooner or later the store will loss more customers and business. When I was growing up in Monty G, Shoprite was actually a cool place to hang out. You would constantly run in to peers, whether it be stocking the shelves, smoking out back, or being dragged along on a grocery trip with their parents. Until I grew up and moved away, I never thought there was anything special about Shoprite. Well let me tell you, it IS world class. So many markets I've visited since those days are grimy & offer poor selection. Montgomery's Shope Rite is clean. The produce is always fresh and they have the most random extras you wouldn't expect to find in a grocery store. The employees are competent and helpful. Their is a Bank of America (I think) located inside so you can multi task while shopping. Make sure you bring/sign up for your savings card!!! read more

This is one of the worst food stores in the area. First the south enterence is poorly designed. People cannot even enter and exit the store at the same time. The management of the store is very poor. They treat all the shoppers as criminals. -All the shopping carts have had the lower deck removed so you can place bulk items down there. -If you do not place every item in a bag the checkout people will waste your time by placing stickers on every single item. Many of the check out people are rude, lazy or just plain clueless. I know it's a low paying job but come on! This is what I have witness myself or been a victim of. -They refuse to help bag even after they have check out all the items you are buying. They just sit there and watch you finish. -Two different lettuces (same cost per pound) were in one plastic bag. The teller used their hand and grabbed the lettuce to remove it from the bag. -A customer paid with a great deal of change and the teller placed all the coins on the glass scanner to count them. Once on the glass he had trouble removing the coins. The whole process had several of us waiting over 8 minutes. The good side is they are close and have an ok selection. If I can spare time I go to the farmers market in Hillsborough and the Wegman's in Bridgewater or Princeton. read more

The store was clean and had wide variety of items. The prices are more expensive than at Walmart. Thus, I only shopped here once and didn't come back. ShopRite has a loyalty program. It is easy and free to park. Our favorite stores around here are: Trader Joe's for interesting and affordable organic foods, Target for nice-looking home's goods, the Asian food market for the cheapest produce, frozen edamame, fresh fishes and meats, and Walmart. If you were to treat yourself to delicious breads, McCaffrey's and Whole foods have the best breads around here. read more

I noticed an error in my receipt and called Customer Service to check on the price of the item I was convinced was on sale, and I was told they were too busy and I had to go in person (I live 25 minutes away. When I finally was able to go in person and pointed them to the error in advertising the price of the item (a TOTALLY wrong 2 for $10 note was inserted in the wrong product!), they responded I should have read the fine prints better. I would have returned the item but cannot do it because of the pandemic regulations. Very rude and incompetent, did not take care of a mistake they made and did not honor it. read more

2.5 star average is pretty spot on. Good selection overall. Friendly staff. Definitely not great meat or seafood. Produce section is pretty garbage. Bakery is not great, but their breads are ok if you buy them the day they're made. Basically, if you're not getting a prepackaged product, don't come here. read more

Used to be a great store; but lately has been catering to niche customer; organic, non-gmo, etc. Has been replacing known brands with store brands with limited shelf life, latest milk lasted less than 5 days, and less than ideal flavoring. This place is probably the worst Shoprite in the state. Famous for rotting fruit and vegetables, poor quality meet and moldy baked goods. They have now decided to rearrange the entire store. In doing this they have decided to no longer carry many basic items including Tide powder. Really, not everyone uses liquids. Done with this place!!! read more

Tremendous store! I have shopped at this location for many years and find it to be always clean and well stocked, no matter when I go. The front end managers are right there to take care of any shopping concern with speed and professionalism. There's a small food court in the back of the store, with a fresh hot food bar ready to provide an early lunch or dinner to both employees and dining patrons. Between digital coupons and weekly sale prices, this store aims to save its customers money. Other nearby stores just can't compete. I highly recommend the Montgomery ShopRite for excellent customer service and satisfaction! read more

Shoprite you are not my favorite store, but you're 2.1 miles from my house so I'll be back. This year I have stopped in many times for long lists and short lists of groceries and supplies. Several times I have gotten home and put my perishables away only to find them expired or a day a way from expiring. Really?? How not to be considerate and helpful. In addition I'm seriously disappointed in the lack of care given to the gluten free area. I happened recently to be shopping for a side dish for my gluten free, celiac boyfriend. So I went over to the gluten free, freezer zone. I am pleased to say Skillman Shoprite has begun to carry more options here for gluten free folks, but when I noticed that one of the food bowls called "Amy's" was NOT gluten free, I pointed it out to 3 (THREE) employees. They informed me they'd move them in the morning. Good thing I caught that or it would have proved to be another wasted trip, disappointed boyfriend, etc! Although I was stinking furious they didn't immediately move the mis stocked items over to the organic freezer right next to the gluten free one, I felt satisfiedp that at least three people knew about the problem. Well just three weeks later I stopped over once again to get my favorite frozen, gluten free bread and wouldn't you know they NEVER moved the Amy's bowls over. So I did it myself. I have also routinely found rancid or spoiled meat in the meat department. I have gotten in the habit of leaving packages on the meat counter - but they probably just put them right back. I have noticed for over 10 years the lack of consistency with the stocking of many items. For example, there are certain products that are rarely or never on the shelves at this Shoprite but I find them in other Shoprites and certainly other stores. Some of the long standing managers are very helpful and kind, which makes me feel better about continuing to shop here. However the only thing I know for sure is, you will spend more money than any other grocery store in the area. read more

The grocery selection is good. The staff just make it an unpleasant experience to go to. I've shopped here a dozen times already and I just grit my teeth in preparation for being sneered at, snapped at and forced to bag my own groceries while the cashiers are checking out the next person - I don't mind doing my own and I do - but if you get ahead of me, when you're done and I've paid, help me finish and I'll be on my way. read more

My girlfriend and I decided to give this Shop Rite a chance.Its the same distance from our apt as the one in E Windsor,NJ. Its less crowded and the staff is very friendly. read more
