I sadly discovered that when Harold (who personally ran the Deli every day) passed away he took the delicious pastrami to the grave with him. I was at Harolds yesterday. I stopped here on the drive from Baltimore north toward New York, and for that purpose it's almost ideal: convenient, memorable, and definitely more fun than a normal highway stop. Would I recommend it? Yes. Is it worth seeing once? Also yes. It has that big, theatrical, old-school deli energy where the portions are part of the show. That said, I'm not in the camp that every good restaurant is automatically a five-star spot. When everything is a five, it gets harder to separate the truly elite places, the hometown heroes, and the restaurants worth planning a trip around. Harold's lands for me as a very solid three-point-something, graciously rounded to four because they have a Marine Corps flag hung in reception. The food was good, the portions were whatever you make it, and the whole place has novelty value without feeling like a total gimmick. The sandwiches are large enough to satisfy a hungry, medium-sized guy without completely defeating him. And honestly, on a menu full of meat, my favorite thing may have been the healthy pickled salad/pickle bar situation -- bright, crunchy, and a great counterbalance to the heavier deli classics. My biggest knock was the service atmosphere. There seemed to be an army of staff, but not much interaction beyond their phones. Maybe I caught it at an off time, and maybe the place comes alive when it's packed, but that kept the experience from feeling warmer or more special. Went to Harold's with a group of friends. Since Harold passed away, we did not know what to expect with food, service and decor. Sometimes it's just the cut of meat but it still was good. We also shared fries and onion rings that were very good. For dessert we had a piece of strawberry cheese cake. That was the icing of our dinner. Very good. Our waitress was patient with us, but they now close, on a Saturday night, at 9:00. I finally had the chance to try out the famous Harold's Deli, and it didn't disappoint. Without a doubt, it was the best pastrami sandwich I've had in NJ. I also ordered chili and an egg cream. The chili was very satisfying and had large chunks of real cheddar cheese on top. The egg cream was not what I was expecting, being that it was my first time ordering one, but I enjoyed it. It reminded me of a watered-down milkshake, which was easier to drink. The pickle bar was a huge plus. I've been to many delis in NJ and NYC, and this one is in the top 5 for me. Harold's specializes in very large portions. They're known for their giant meals and their pickle bar. The pickle bar was lovely as there are a wide selection of breads and pickles to choose from. We came in a group of 4, and we needed it. The four of us split a single Matzoh Ball Soup and even then we couldn't finish it and had to get a two takeout containers to split between us. The soup itself was wonderful and came with two extra cups of broth. Though the main feature was obviously the giant Matzoh Ball that could be the size of a small child's head. Our main course was the Pastrami sandwich. It towered over us, though we were able to finish it, with a good amount of effort. It comes with several slices of your choice of bread so that you can pick apart the behemoth into several smaller sized sandwiches. It was one of the best sandwiches I've had and definitely rivaled and even bested many of the other famous delis I've gone to. The meat was absolutely tender and dripping with juices. Perfect. We wanted dessert so badly. When you first walk in you are greeted by their mammoth sized cakes, but unfortunately, we'll have to save those for another time, and I bought a black and white cookie to go. All and all, a great experience that I would like to revisit someday in the near future. While Edison is filled with new hip attractions now, definitely take a moment to step back in time and enjoy a classic delicatessen experience. read more

This was a great idea for lunch after being at the expo center across the street. There is a huge parking lot specifically for Harold's. Come hungry and with a group as everything here intends to feed 2-3 people. Seated almost instantly as there was ample space in the dining area. Our server Anwar was patient and efficient for our entire meal. Started with a matzoh ball soup as this cold dreary weather is perfect for it. The matzoh ball is huge! The size of a dodgeball at least! The matzoh ball itself was delicious and cooked perfectly through. The carrots and celery were delicious as well however the broth definitely could have had some more seasonings but a little salt and pepper fixed that right up. The Large Reuben (Corned Beef and Pastrami) sandwich came out and it was stacked high. The two men in my group were able to almost easily finish the whole thing off minus two sandwich halves they took home. The meat was delicious and tender for both. The coleslaw was on the creamier side and still good. They also have a pickle bar filled with assorted pickles, chips, hot peppers, and bread. Definitely check it out while you wait for your food! The slaw is my favorite. It's like a vinaigrette slaw and it's so tasty. We ordered the chicken soup and the chili. They both were delicious. We also ordered a hot dog to share and each got the junior size hot pastrami sandwiches. The hot dog was extremely delicious. This old school spot is nothing if not authentic. Get the pastrami and the brisket and make sure you got to the pickle bar! Our table of 5 left the ordering to my parents who have been coming here for years: -1 pastrami -1 brisket -and an order of onion rings. I believe they got the Large for each (which is supposed to feed 2-3 people). When I tell you we had food left over, there were 3 seperate doggie bags filled. Each came with bread, coleslaw and mustard and both were delicious. The pastrami was spiced perfectly and made the most incredible sandwich and the brisket was warm comfort food with served with a sauce on the side that I didn't get to try (I'm a mustard gal). Service is inconsistent, and prices are getting NYC price high. The small sandwiches are now the size of a regular Deli, at nearly double the price. The bread was not fresh, and the meat wasn't the top quality I'm accustomed to. Outside of the pickle bar, I'm starting to look to my local deli as the better option. This place has been on my bucket list for a while due to its giant sandwiches so my great aunt took us there as we were hanging out with friends not far away. My wife and I got a regular sized pastrami and roast beef sandwich and my great aunt got a junior sized sandwich and we had about have of it left with leftovers along with their generous offerings at the pickle bar. My wife and I also shared a large New York Egg Cream. We love the name since my grandfather and great aunt's brother in law's name was Harold and she and her husband (his brother) went to a location further north that is now closed on an early date. The location is quite convenient by car near the turnpike and it is in the lower level of a vacant hotel which hopefully gets developed into senior housing or another hotel with this iconic deli staying in business here. Matzo balls bigger than softballs, potato pancakes the size of hubcaps, knishes as big as my head, and sandwiches so big that one xtra large can feed 8 people! Oh, and they have the world's largest pickle bar stocked with fresh salads, bread, assorted varieties of pickles, green tomatoes, cherry peppers and more. We celebrated 2 birthdays with 16 people and everyone loved the food. The service was incredible too. The salads (tuna and chicken) were great as was the melt in your mouth pastrami. While the prices may appear daunting, it's actually a bargain when you add it up because of the giant portions. Even the mammoth sized layer cakes were great (2 slices fed 16 people with enough leftover to bring home!) Harold's is simply the best when it comes to quality, taste, service, and portions. After seeing Harold's pop up in my FYP on FB I was intrigued by a restaurant/deli with a pedigree going back to the long lost Carnegie Deli in New York City. Harold's is a restaurant physically connected to the now defunct "E Hotel" (which had some pretty atrocious reviews going back 12 years). Once upon a time you could walk from the hotel to the restaurant through a small hallway, but that has now been sealed. Don't let the closed hotel throw you off. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Harold's is a clean, well maintained and classic feeling restaurant.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]It is huge, with seating areas to the left and right.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]Lighting includes old fashioned lighting units in the ceiling and some covers are made of stained glass (a fun, retro touch).[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]The bathrooms have also seemingly been renovated relatively recently with the walls gleaming with bright tile.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] To the left side of the restaurant is one of its main features: the Pickle Bar! Yes, you read that right. This bar also includes small muffins and bread rolls. Now, be warned: this bar is included with your meal, but if you try to take any of it to go you will be charged for each item, so I recommend being very conservative when you visit this bar. As I looked over the menu I have to confess to getting some serious sticker shock. The prices were expensive in many cases and beyond my understanding in others. About $28 for a sandwich intended for one person? That makes sense. $21+ for a Knish on the other hand doesn't make sense. Also, if you wanted to try the chicken liver you had to either get a $40 "salad" portion or in a full blown sandwich. My girlfriend and I were just hoping to try a small amount with crackers or something but that wasn't an option. Bummer. We wound up ordering a turkey sandwich and a beef tongue sandwich, both on rye bread. Service was great, with our waiter being very patient with answering our questions (of which we had plenty since this was our first time). Our food came very quickly and included a small side of Russian dressing and extra bread. The turkey sandwich was...okay. The turkey was moist but not particularly well seasoned. Once we added mustard (provided at the table) it was a lot better. Add a slice or two of tongue and it's a really good sandwich. That said, the star of the night was the tongue sandwich. It was tasty, had a good chew and I really liked it. I really enjoyed my visit to Harold's. It's a bit out of my way so I can't go often, but I do intend to visit again one day! read more

We came to Harold's on a Wednesday evening. We were originally going to Katz, but Harold's was much closer with a parking lot and so glad we did because it exceeded my expectations! We ordered a pastrami for 3 that came with extra rye bread. The pastrami was served hot and it was mouth watering delicious! They have gluten free options (daughter has celiac) and she had a junior pastrami served with coleslaw. Harold's has a pickle bar with all you can eat. I ask for pastrami from Harolds every time my in-laws visit or we visit them. The flavor is so rich and smoky, even if it's takeout. You get such a ridiculously large helping with each order. The sandwich is the size of my son's head, I swear it could feed four people! We got the matzo ball soup - very tasty chicken broth with a singular matzo ball the size of a softball - to share for our table of 4. We also got the pastrami sandwich with rye to share. Meat was flavorful and not dry. If we weren't so stuffed I would have liked to try one of their cakes but true to form, the cakes are about a foot tall and probably would have been an unreasonable amount of sugar at that point in the evening, sadly. Well, my wife, our two children, and I drove up to Harold's because we heard they served sandwiches the size of small planets and I figured we ought to orbit one at least once in our lives. We shared a Reuben sandwich, a potato knish, and for reasons known only to himself and possibly a higher power, our oldest chose the hot borscht. He said it was creamier than expected, but smiled while saying it, so I believe he meant it in a good way. The Reuben was delicious. I say this as a man who has eaten many Reubens in his time, often while contemplating the slow collapse of civilization. This one was tender, tangy, salty, and large enough to occupy a congressional district. All four of us ate until we felt like beached whales and still brought home a hunk of sandwich roughly the size of a Gutenberg Bible. The knish was the size of a dinner plate and had the same comforting density as childhood memories and regrettable decisions. I loved it. The pickle bar could sustain a small Eastern European village through a long winter. There were sweet hot pickle slices, pickled peppers, haf sours, full sours, dill pickles, and a variety of pickled salads that looked like something your eccentric aunt would bring to a picnic and insist everyone try. I tried them. They were excellent. We did not get dessert, but I stared at the cheesecake like it owed me money. Each slice was the size of my head. I am not exaggerating. I measured with my eyes and I have a reasonably sized head. The restaurant was packed. Absolutelypacked. Shoulder-to-shoulder humanity chewing and shouting and laughing like they'd just been told life isn't so bad after all. But the staff, saints in slip-resistant soles, moved fast and kept it all running. Even with a full waiting room, small parties like ours were seated with impressive speed. It's the kind of place where big families come to celebrate things like birthdays or getting out of jury duty. It's not cheap, but neither is a minor religious pilgrimage, and you get leftovers that last longer than some relationships. Located in an obscure light industrial section of Edison, Harold's consists of about three rooms on different levels. One is the site of an impressive pickle bar. I have been to Harold's a number of times but not since the pandemic. I was so excited that they had reopened the pickle bar. So when my friends wanted a true Jewish deli experience instead of taking them to the local deli 5 minutes away I drive them an hour to get to Harold's. We were seated right away, our server was friendly and answered their questions. She was kind enough to get them a sample taste of the corn beef and pastrami. They were shocked by the size of the cakes in the cases when you first walked in. A picture of them vs. seeing them in person, there is no comparison. The pickle bar was smaller and no longer had the extra rye bread on it but still had a good selection to pick from. The steak French fries were crispy and delicious. The potato knish, which I was concerned over the size might not have the flavor needed to get a good tasting met its mark. The sandwiches which came with extra bread were a decent size were nothing compared to how big I recall them being. I felt the prices went up and the sizes came down. The rice pudding was hands down excellent!! Some of the best I have had. Overall they had an amazing experience, we had a wonderful lunch and enjoyed our afternoon. Great atmosphere. This place is "Uber Famous" so, very high expectations going in. It's a big place! Semi-open kitchen, extremely clean. Know for all things "Gigantic" they do not disappoint. The brisket and the aus jus that accompanies it are incredible! The only thing that fell flat ( no pun intended) was the potato pancake. Not so good. Everthing else was top- notch! Great service. Not as expensive as I was expecting. Plus it gives a restaurant fan exactly what they want: a unique experience! Highly recommend! read more

I was excited to take my brother to Harold's so we decided to stop in on Sunday evening. Although the portions are decent the prices are astronomical. The sandwiches start around $28 and they are not packed the way you would expect for that price. We were quite disappointed to find out AFTER we ordered that they only had seeded rye that day. The seeded rye was on the stale side. I asked for a Kaiser roll because I do not like caraway seeds. The roll was stale as well. The place was clean and well lit. I guess it's all about the nostalgia here. I would say for their price point they should serve fresh bread and have seedless rye available! Server was attentive as business seemed kind of slow. Harold's is a little hard to find. It's on the main level of what seems to be an abandoned hotel. Not the best look. read more
