We have stayed in Shoreland the past two years and have absolutely loved it. This is by far the best apartment in Hyde Park, and is significantly more affordable than the other luxury high rises. The units are great, and we have only had a couple issues with the appliances (all of which were our fault like a clogged sink for example), and the maintenance people came to fix it in under an hour. The front desk people are so kind and friendly as well. The biggest plus is the proximity to Promontory Point and the lake, which is about a 3 minute walk away. We take walks there 3-4 times a day and couldn't imagine our life anywhere else. Unfortunately we had to move to South loop to be closer to work, but we are super sad to leave this building, and hope others will have as good of an experience as we had. read more

The updated amenities inside the unit & the helpful front desk (Mia, Stacy, Brittany) & maintenance staff (James & Steve) were the saving graces of living in this building. However, Mac properties management has soured our experience. Two incidents stand out: (1) The building's historic so its maintenance should match its age. We had a piece of the building fall onto our car & shatter our rear windshield in their outdoors parking lot. We were compensated for the damage, but this has made us nervous about the maintenance of the exterior of the building. (2) We reported a pattern of inconsiderate behavior that violated the terms of our lease by one of our neighbors, complete with dates, time stamps, & durations. We had spoken with the neighbor before to resolve the issue to no avail. We turned to management as a last resort, only to have our well-documented concerns dismissed by hand-wavy, flimsy excuses from our neighbor. I'd recommend you find another landlord who keeps up the maintenance of their property & treats all their tenants equally, not just their entitled wealthy, white ones. read more

They're extremely tidy and polite, and everything's always cleaned up after they leave! Also, shoutout to the front desk Jackie and Mia! They're fun to talk to and take great care of your packages! Shoreland's a great place to live in, with stunning views of the lake and park, and convenient access to the 171 bus (stops right at the front door) and the 6 bus to downtown (2 blocks away). What happened?* I was discriminated against because I have a CHA voucher and because I'm a young black mother. They showed me an apartment that wasn't and liveable conditions 5053 s ellis had Holes in the walls, holes, and the floor. The ceiling was coming down. Lead and paint everywhere trash everywhere the wells was like discussing, I asked Donell Chenault why he would show me this apartment if it looked this bad. I guess he felt like all black CHA vouchers holders are nasty and don't care how they are living, I felt Discriminated against. Because I know for a fact he would of never showed this apartment under these conditions to any white person. I was lie to about getting my money back. He got mad at me because im over upset from dealing with mac property lies and unprofessional behavior on how they treated me n over looked me as a human being. I put down on holding deposit for 600, so I could get an apartment I was hung up on repeatedly because they know my number. I was lied to about them showing me a apartment I wanted to view to rent, and they showed me what they wanted me to have.I wanted to view the apartment 5234-5244 S. Ingleside Avenue. I get there and now all of a sudden it's not available for rent when it showed it was online. So he showed me the hold and the well apartment on 5053 s ellis until 1 that looked abandon and condemned for years. I'm sure they would of never shown a white person this kind of apartment under them conditions. Donell Chenault told me I couldn't afford other apartment when I knew that I could . I was trying for over 6 months to get into an apartment with their company. I had to fail a discriminated complaint for them not taken me seriously for the first 6 months because I wasn't working, but I have a CHA VOUCHERS that covers all my rent. Now they are showing me unliveable apartments. So I can get discouraged and give up. I'm confused about how is this possible and how they are getting away with this unprofessional behavior. Mac Properties is not an Equal opportunity company they are Racist, they Discriminate against black women with kids CHA vouchers holders are not welcome at all. This place is terrible. I can't wait to move out of here. Whoever is running this place will go to no ends to make more money at the expense of residents. I was one of the first residents to move in when it opened in early 2014, and it has gone downhill. Rent and utilities are both up. Internet used to be included and now it's not. Compared to other luxury apartments the amenities here are not worth the rent. No pool. No printing. The street parking outside is free but getting harder and harder to find a spot when you need one. They will not accept packages more than 30-35 lbs and say a delivery over that limit will be returned. read more

I've been a resident at Shoreland for over a year now and I still LOVE IT! As of late, I've had several car issues and gratefully was able to secure a rental car with each occurrence. I was concerned about parking because my car has the garage door opener attached to the windshield. I called and spoke to Alyssa each time and each time she was patient and understanding. She kindly walked out a temporary garage door opener every time I asked. This eased my already frustrated mind. So for that, I'm thankful. I'm also thankful for Mia and Chris at the front desk. Cherita, Jackie, Sandra, Stephen, Jose and James as well. This crew make living here enjoyable and stress free. Not to mention the friendships I've developed. DO NOT CONSIDER LIVING HERE unless you enjoy being lied to! Shoreland is back at it again with their lies and changing how they do things to make extra money. In September 2015 when they said they'd be unassigning our $250 parking spots they said our rates would be lowered. Today they announced they were unassigning parking in February of 2016. I inquired about what our new rates would be and where we would be parking if we came home and the lot was full because they plan to oversell the lot. I was told they no longer were planning to lower costs and we'd be paying $250 with there being a chance that we would come home and sometimes not have parking. But don't worry if you came home and didn't have parking you could fight for a refund - good luck with that. Shoreland changes what they do when they want with zero cares as to how it effects its residents. When I first moved in there were only Shoreland workers. They have now moved the entire MAC property staff there with no notice and they are moving in another company. I did not agree to move into an office building. It doesn't feel safe when a ton of random workers are wandering around on my floor and throughout the building. read more

I moved in about a month ago, and I am so glad that I decided to live here. This building is definitely the nicest in Hyde Park. The people at the front desk and in the management/leasing office are always so friendly and willing to help with everything. I have been very impressed with the responsiveness of the staff here. The building was recently renovated and everything is brand new. The in-unit washer/dryer is definitely a perk, as well as the granite counter tops and new appliances. I have no complaints about this building yet, but will update if anything about my review changes. read more

I've lived here for a year, and I have already renewed for another. Shoreland has been a great place to live in law school. It's convenient to UChicago and a bunch of other law students live here. I really like my apartment. I think it has good amenities (in-unit laundry is huge for me). Everyone who works here is fantastic. Mia, Katherine, Yusuf, and Sandra are all friendly faces at the front desk. Package notifications are prompt and efficient. Maintenance is also amazing. The Dynamic Duo has struck again!!! Steve and James are definitely Masters of their Craft!!! I had a backup in my kitchen sink on a weekend that neither of them were on call or available and needless to say I spent that weekend with an unresolved issue. That very next business day that they returned we must have been the 1st on their list. They knocked on our door bright and early that morning and lo and behold...they had a plumber with them. The issue that went unresolved that entire weekend was promptly completed in a matter of 15 minutes!!! Shoreland is a wonderful building for anyone looking to live in East Hyde Park. It is home to a diversity of residents, including graduate students (mostly from the University of Chicago Law School, Pritzker School of Medicine, and Harris School of Public Policy), young professionals, and families. Although there are a growing number of "luxury" buildings in Hyde Park--5252, Solstice, and City Hyde Park--the Shoreland is unique in that it offers luxury amenities in a building that has significant historical character. Although there are amenities like a gym, bike room, and dog washing room available to residents, the real "amenity" that makes it worth paying a premium to live in the building are the people that make it feel like home--by consistently going above and beyond what is required of them. Specifically, Mia, Jacquelyn--from the front front desk--James, and Anthony--from the maintenance team--deserve recognition for their efforts. read more

If you're debating among the higher quality apartment buildings in Hyde Park, you can't go wrong with Shoreland. Before signing a lease here, I checked the higher end apartment complexes in Hyde Park. I would say Regents and Hyde Park Tower are the two most comparable to Shoreland in price and amenities, but you can't beat Shoreland's: +in unit laundry +parking garage +high quality finishes in the bathrooms & kitchens (new, stainless steel, & the drawers have that self-closing mechanism so they can't be slammed) +fast, attentive, & hard working apartment management +free year of 1 gigabyte/second internet speed The location is great for those who would rather be on the outskirts of Hyde Park rather than the center (I'd argue traffic & parking are slightly better). Plus it's about a 5 minute walk to the beautiful Promontory Point Park or the Museum of Science and Industry. For anyone attending or working at the UoC, the 171 stops literally right in front of the building and can get you to campus in about 10-15 minutes or less. read more

The Shoreland is marketed as "luxury" apartments. I would consider the price luxury, but that's about it. The customer service is especially lacking. A particular incident--management moved trash cans out of the parking garage into a less convenient location because they were being filled up. Instead of emptying the trash cans more frequently or getting a bigger one for the garage, they made things more difficult for residents. Residents pay extra utilities for the first and second floors (which houses offices) so the rent is different every month. You can't set up automatic bill pay to just charge whatever the bill is, so they'll send you emails every month telling you to pay a balance of $20 or something. There are only two ellipticals in the gym and they just put an 'out of order' sign on one that was squeaking for weeks before it was finally fixed. Also, be aware the photos on the Shoreland's website of the gym are not of the current gym. They had this big gym, rented out the whole building and then moved the gym into a smaller space and turned the old gym into offices. Unless this location is extremely convenient for you, live in South Loop!!! read more

Yes, it's a beautiful building, but I "moved in" nearly 3 weeks ago, and I'm still not really moved in because the building is IMPOSSIBLE TO MOVE INTO!!!!! The move in process has been a LIVING HELL. You are required to reserve the freight elevator (which is seldom available), but they only allow 2 hour increments; however, NO DELIVERY COMPANY EVER commits to a 2 hour window. I ordered a mattress, and was required to reserve the freight elevator. Unfortunately, the mattress company will only commit to a 4 hour delivery window. I have had the building reject my deliveries because they were late and outside my freight elevator reservation. I'm still not fully moved in, but Shoreland has certainly collected my rent in full. If I had it to do over again, I would not move in here. UPDATE: My neighbor was moving in today, he had reserved the freight elevator, but the movers couldn't finish within the 2 hour reservation window. So the building made his movers stop and wait until there was an open slot to resume moving in. Just wondering how I'm going to move out of this place? Are they going to keep my stuff after my lease expires because the freight elevator isn't available for me to move my stuff out? Maybe that's how they keep people from leaving. read more

Gone are the days when the manager in this building was nice. THey DO NOT tend to online orders on time,(as one idiomanager said, we do not check it frequently)..why have that option then??? YET, you cannot go and talk to them face to face...its a bit ridiculous. My husband lived in a MAC apt before and I swore against it. This place circa 2014, was a different place. I moved in a week ago. I was concerned that I might go over the 2 hour freight elevator reservation. Thanks to Jessica and Jason who helped me with the scheduling, I had access to the freight elevator for the time i needed to complete my move-in. One of the custodians handling the recycling, stopped to help me grab some of my things in out of the rain and showed me how to use the 2 freight elevators. They were able to book a two-hour slot that had no reservation behind it. So, though the building policy prevented me from reserving more than one 2-hour time slot...the likelihood that the time behind my reservation would get booked in the next 24 hours was slim to nil. There was plenty of excellent communication throughout the entire process: selecting a unit, the administrative aspects of leasing my unit...including a mid-stream switch to another unit WHEN I CHANGED MY MIND, to listening and responding to my concerns about the condition of the apartment prior to my moving in, and finally to making sure my actual move-in day went well. Many thanks to Rebecca my Leasing Agent and Brianna my Resident Success liaison. There was some kind of glitch that happened in processing the second of the three payments I made through the resident portal (from the same bank account with ample funds). This resulted in a $25 fee from MAC Apartments. In light of the customer service I have received thus far, I feel confident the accounting department will resolve this speedily. Since I've been here I received text messages about package deliveries. Yesterday, I received a follow-up phone call from the front desk as a reminder. I got into the elevator to get my package...cool jazzy music was playing softly. On the first floor, as I stepped up to the desk, I was greeted by the offer of coffee and donuts! read more

Shoreland mission is NOT their residents. This place models as luxury and I ensure its not. They are in the business of sucking out the money of their residents by any possible way. They charge for light bulbs, normal wear and tear on carpet, community electric and community gas plus a convenience fee. This is in addition to your ComEd Bill. The parking was once assigned; however since moving their central office to Shoreland where they have a NO residents allowed policy in the office, the parking is now open and cost $200 bucks. A residential company that doesn't allow residents in their office. I bet it's a strategy to provide parking for the executives. This property management is so bad they even have a high turn over for employees to include staff functions of concierge, management and maintenance . The up keeps of the building are on downward spring. The trash rooms are sometimes packed and never cleaned, common areas hardly vacuumed or mopped just pis poor. Once a month the elevators are out of service. The cable hook up that's provided with the building is horrible. They use DirectTv as the cable provider and good luck trying watch Tv during the rain or figuring out how to get a technician out. The entire 2nd floor is filled with offices which was supposed to be residential amenities. The gym and lounging area DOSENT have cable just local channels. We are in year 2016. This is not the place to live. read more

DO NOT LIVE HERE Management: They moved the gym and have essentially taken over entire 1-2 floors. The front driveway continuously serves as their own parking space. Really makes it hard to get through. Staff: Really rude. You expect the front door person, which sends up deliveries and signs for packages...to be at the damn front desk at a set time (not randomly be away and have people wait until they come back) Security: Really annoying that even though guests call you from directory, and you give them access, the front door person has to manually let them in. In more than a number instances, the front door person refused to let them in until I had to come down. Absurd Billing: You will be charged random fees and never know why. Parking: It's a hassle. Off street parking is not only limited, but there is a high probability that it will be broken into because there is a public park across the building. Safety: Really dangerous area. It is across a public park AND 2 bars. During the summer, it gets really sketchy. I have lived here two years, moved in when it first opened and have seen a DRASTIC change in services since Mac Properties took over. DO NOT LIVE here. read more

If I could give this place a zero for the Bad Management I would double it!!! I've been at this place now for 15 months and the leasing agent that worked with us as not spoken. I see her at least twice a week walking the dog, still no word. I don't beg people to speak, but a courtesy good morning or hello would suffice. Issue # 1: We had a terrible experience trying to get our cable service. Kim was the manager at the time and she was simply awesome. It took the cable company almost a month to get our service activated. Each day we were told, "the cable guy will be here tomorrow".. It was really bad and unprofessional on the cable company's part. Thank God they provided us with a credit for the cable service. After about 13 months, I contacted the cable company and found out that the contract was signed for more than the length of the lease. Go figure, probably I will have to pay to break that contract. I wish I had known this ahead of time. Issue # 2: There is an additional common area fee. For those who have a two bedroom, the fee is roughly 70 dollars when you include gas to it. This turned out to be a second electric bill, which we weren't told about up front. I felt management should have made this clear before we signed the lease. Enjoy the air you breathe in the lobby at shore land, you pay for it. We had an extremely difficult time reserving the elevator to move in and out. The management there was not easy to work with. Come on, people spend more than 2k to live there and you can't be lenient with them. Issue # 3: one of the light bulbs went out in the Kitchen and I contacted maintenance to have the bulb replace. As it turns out, there is a fee to install the light bulbs and you have to pay for each bulb. Oh Wow! How much is rent again? Should these bulbs be free... This should have obviously been discussed up front. There was free coffee in the beginning, but obviously management figured that costs too much, so they discontinued that. The parking spot is $185 (outside parking), which weren't all that great. I felt as though I needed to lose weight to get in and out of my car; the spots were extremely tight. Issue # 4: We were scheduled to move out end of month July, no notification was sent indicating that our lease was about to expire. I contacted Mac Property and after being transferred to 7 Agents I finally spoke with someone who could help. The notification was sent 15 days before we were scheduled to be out. They explained that the lease was sent to the other contact on the contract (my wife). I was highly upset about this because the primary contact should have been me. Long story short, my wife never got any notification sent over to her. However, Mac Property had a log of emails been sent. What! What! In the end, we ended up paying for 16 days due to an hold-status on the unit we moved out of on 7/31 because the keys weren't returned on 7/31. I had no case because Mac explained my wife was on the lease, so she has rights to be the primary contact. We missed all notifications due to miscommunication because management there is soo awesome. I ended up paying 1071 for a mistake that could have been avoid had we received the proper communication. Management is terrible at Shore land. The doormen/women are great. . Please be careful renting here. read more

***The Short Story*** Do not trust MAC Property Management - they are masters of using bait and switch techniques to trick people into signing leases at their overpriced apartments. ***The Long Story*** Shoreland used to be a dormitory, but MAC Property Management purchased it and renovated the building to serve as apartments. I moved into Shoreland right after it reopened, and at the time I had high hopes for the place despite MAC Property's awful reputation in Hyde Park. Unfortunately, MAC ended up being just as bad as I had heard they were, so I am moving out as soon as my lease is up after having lived here for over 2 years. I am providing several examples below as to why I would never recommend this property or any property managed by MAC to someone I didn't dislike. ---The 1st and 2nd Floor Amenities--- At the time I moved in, there were two dedicated study rooms, a spacious gym with wooden flooring and mirrored walls, and a gaming room with a billiard table and a ping pong table on the 2nd floor. There were also many empty rooms on the 1st and 2nd floors, and as I was taking a tour before signing my lease, I asked the leasing consultant what they planned on putting in those spaces, to which she responded that perhaps a dry cleaner or a restaurant would go in there. Although the existing amenities were not guaranteed in my lease, I reasonably assumed that I would get to use what I was shown at the time. Fast forward to 2015. MAC decided to replace the brand new gym with office space; they turned the gaming room into a small, awkward gym; and they turned one of the two study rooms into a gaming room. They also filled in all of the empty spaces on the 1st and 2nd floors with office space, so now this building essentially acts as both an apartment and a corporate office for MAC. By doing this, MAC not only eliminated some of their residents' amenities, but they also made it difficult to find parking throughout the day because a lot of the free spots outside are taken up by employees of MAC who are working downstairs. MAC apparently did the same thing at Regents Park just a year before (i.e., told residents that they were "renovating" the gym but downsized it and made more room for their office space). ---The Bicycle Room--- Another example is the bicycle storage room. To get your bicycle in and out of the building in 2014, you had to walk it through two sets of heavy doors, which made it very difficult to get in and out - especially if you had a basket and were carrying groceries. Also, you had to swipe your key fob at each door, which was a pain to do while pushing a bicycle. In early 2014 I spoke with Shoreland's management and suggested that they turn those doors into automatic doors because it was such a hassle getting through them. The administrator said that that was a great idea and they would look into it. What ended up happening? In 2015, MAC added a gate outside of the building that also requires residents to swipe their key fob. As a result, if you're coming back from a bicycle ride, you now have to hold open THREE doors and push your bike through, and you have to swipe your key fob at each of those doors to open them. If MAC had simply ignored my suggestion I wouldn't have minded because I imagine that installing automatic doors can be costly. However, they went out of their way to ignore my complaint by increasing the number of doors. ---The Internet--- MAC initially advertised this building as having free high-speed internet. Indeed, when I used speedtest.net after first moving in, I was getting speeds of over 100 Mbps for both the upload and the download. However, at some point in 2015, MAC slipped letters under each tenant's door stating that the free high-speed internet was actually just for a limited period, and that it was coming to an end. The letter stated that tenants would still receive free, basic 10 Mbps internet, but if they wanted anything faster than that they would have to pay for it. This was bothersome because nowhere in my lease or during the conversations with the leasing consultants did someone tell me that the free high-speed internet MAC advertised was only a temporary thing. Even so, the 10 Mbps option was sufficient for what I used it for, so I let it slide. However, in the middle of August 2016, MAC slipped another paper under each tenant's door stating that the Internet would no longer be free whatsoever and that we needed to sign up with an Internet service provider starting September 1, 2016. I spoke with a MAC representative and argued that what they did was essentially false advertising, but I was told that the Internet was not guaranteed anywhere in my lease, and that they had essentially provided it as a courtesy up until this point.
