    Look at all the potholes!!

DANGER- this site is scattered with drug needles, human poop, and apparently a security guard (not sure if he was really security) but he took photos of our children. We tried to go on a walk and there were homeless people camping within a few feet of our campsite in both directions. It was by far the worst experience we have ever had in all of our RV excursions. People were camped out smoking pot right behind a fence next to the laundry facility. We stayed for a total of 45 minutes to an hour and in that time a homeless person broke down on his bike directly next to our family and then cussed and left his bike in the middle of the street. I was actually afraid to get back out of the RV to move it. There were so many enormous pot holes entering the site that it broke a few things inside the RV. The sites weee so close together if we were eating outside at the picnic table we would have been 2 ft from the waste from the next site. It was just awful. I sent management a message asking for a refund because we did not feel safe staying and they refused. They said they are not able to control needless on the path. 30 minutes down the road was a lovely place surrounded by beautiful trees, a playground, arcade and amazing setting. Go anywhere but here.

If you must venture into Eureka and need to park your RV for the night, the Shoreline RV Park is a safe bet. From what I saw of Eureka, there is a huge drug problem and homelessness problem in this city. We noticed quite a few transient people in the upper portions of Northern California but Eureka seems to be a depressing epicenter of down-on-their luck wanderers and free-spirits. Unfortunately we were super tired when we arrived in Eureka after driving all day. We were making our way down the coast and needed to stop for the night. Fortunately, Shoreline was nearby and it had space available so we drove on in. Based on what I saw outside of this park, I was not happy but after we registered and settled in, I realized that the park is secure. I also looked around and noticed that there were quite a few newer class A motor homes and other expensive RVs so that eased my fears that this place would become a problem at night. Sure enough, we had a peaceful, quiet night. We left first thing in the am but not before we stopped for coffee at the gas station right outside the park. Thankfully all you need is close-by and if you wanted to go shopping for any essentials there is a Target across the highway. Laundry facilities on site.

    Nap in the sunshine

Loved it! Stayed four nights for Mothers Day/anniversary getaway. It's was clean and quiet on the edge of Eureka Slough so lots of birds. Right on walking/biking paths linked to entire Humboldt Bay basin. So yes there is some foot traffic. So convenient and central to playing on the coast. Our new favorite.

Grease mess in spots. RVs with junk all around and right next to busy freeway

Voltage doesn't work. 30 amp service and get 15 amps. Gal says check plug, no problems at all at rv parks till this one. It's the unit not our rv. Other spot next door is same thing. Then pull through no good when you can't turn at 90 degree angle to use it. Only 1 night here but should have used the empty parking lot next door for free. Is you like freeway noise-you will be right next to it.

We like off season travel. And added bonus is this place is right off of 101 making it super convenient for traveling. Most spots have full hook ups. Some just w/e. They have a cute little u shaped area for pop-up campers. Not all sites are super level. Some are pull thru and some back in. Some spots back up to 101 but we became used to the sparse traffic quite quickly. The tent sites are mostly very private. They are nice. Perhaps the neatest places to stay are the cabins. They look so inviting. Some have full kitchens which works out nicely since this very well stocked grocer, Murphys, is just down the street. It was a surprising find in a town of a little over 300 souls. They have a hot bar too! Nice people abound in this area. The little store onsite is also well stocked. There are toasty bathrooms available and the showers, if needed, are coin operated. Fair warning: if you use starlink, there are a ton of trees! There is a "bark park". We visited all the cities/towns in the area including the absolutely adorable Ferndale! We highly recommend the beach in Trinidad. Just stunning with tons of soft sand. We recommend Emerald Forest Cabins & RV.

I got to experience this for myself, as my husband and I are on a road trip from LA to NorCal and beyond for a combo work trip for him, and 50th bday spent in nature for me. We stopped in to the Thomas Kuchel Visitor Center and spoke with a friendly park ranger that gave us a map and suggested a hike for us. We stopped in another visitor center (Prairie Creek), where we spoke with another friendly ranger that gave us the more rugged option of said hike. The hike was absolutely beautiful, with Redwoods that go up, up, up. And all around the ground level are so many types of fern, lichen, moss, mushrooms, and other dense forest growth. We did a 3.5 mile hike, which was a great work out, and so scenic. But, my words will do it no justice. Go for yourself and experience it. And remember, leave no trace and pack it in pack it out. If you expect more, then pay more and go somewhere else. If you are a regular KOA Kampground user, you will see that this facility is now privately owned, and doesn't hit the same benchmarks of quality throughout the facility that other KOA's strive to maintain. We arrived after 5 PM after a long drive from San Francisco. The office was closed by 5 PM (which if you are a place for travelers, especially during summer months, maybe consider staying open until 7 PM? ) We were fortunate to catch a very friendly and helpful front office person on her way out. The tent site we were assigned had a flooded waterhose basin, and we wanted to move one site over, to which she graciously told us how to do that, and so we did. The bathrooms could definitely use regular attention. They are absolutely cleaner than most gas station bathrooms, so they're not terrible, and you can see that there isn't a consistent cleaning crew to qualify for five out of five stars consistently. Even though this location is coastal, a lot of the grass in the area is dead and yellow. Again, not a bad thing, but visually, does not give you a "attended to/curated landscape importance" experience. Shower was with hot water, functional shower stalls, and clean countertops to put your toiletries on once getting out. So again, if you have good camping tolerance, this absolutely works. But if you are a needy or judgey "Glamper" you will probably find something wrong with this location. Last part about safety, 2 sites over from us was a single woman traveling the coast who was very friendly and occurred as feeling safe enough to stay in this campground on her own. Enjoy the redwoods easily from this location. We went to the groves and back with no problems with our site, and brought food back from the Thai restaurant in town. The online photos for this place deserve an award for fiction writing…read more What's advertised as a relaxing redwood retreat is actually more of a "choose your own survival adventure" with permanent RVs, random clutter, and a bathroom/shower building that looked like it should probably be condemned by daylight. The whole campground had a very unsettling "people live here and know things you shouldn't ask about" energy. As a woman traveling with a teenage daughter, it definitely did not feel like the family camping atmosphere we expected. Also, genuine question: why do only the women's restrooms have locks on them? That does not exactly increase confidence. It raises several other questions instead. At one point I half expected someone to emerge from the trees and warn us not to go near "the old laundry shed after dark." We are not fancy campers and totally understand rustic. Rustic is charming. This was more "backwoods horror movie side setting" energy. If the website had shown the actual condition of the property, we absolutely would have booked somewhere else. Honestly, if Scooby-Doo and the gang had pulled up in the Mystery Machine, nobody would have questioned it. The only thing missing was a banjo soundtrack and a handwritten sign saying "YOU TURNED AROUND TOO LATE."
