We were looking for soup and decided to try the French onion soup and the potato soup. The potato soup was delicious, and I'd definitely order it again. Unfortunately, the French onion soup was a little too salty for both me and my boyfriend, so neither of us could finish it. We also had the potato wedges and Key lime pie, and we loved both! We used to go to this place all the time. Lately, the food and service have been sub-par. The last time we ate there we were overcharged in a separate bill for $35. I brought this to the attention of the staff the following day but, never received a reimbursement. If you dine there, please check your bill before you pay. We stopped here for a late lunch after a day on the trail and returning our bikes at Sundrift. Two of us got the club sandwich and it was so good! After a 5 mile hike in Paris mountain we decided to give Traveler' Rest another chance. Hungry and tired, we stepped into Shortfields. Ambiance casual and lively, fifteen minutes wait and we were in the booth. Menu looked well endowed and plentiful. We ordered brunch fare and a chicken salad. So, avocado toast was good but not enough; it could use some thing else on the plate. Breakfast potatoes were a little tired and could have been warmer. Veggie omelette was very tasty and hash browns not too shabby. The Salad was par excellence in both presentation and taste. The Philly style omelette also did not disappoint. Enjoyed breakfast this morning for Easter. My friend had the big pancake breakfast and I had the waffle breakfast. Truly everything was delicious. My daughter and I went for dinner on a Friday evening. We did get there fairly earl, 5 pm, and were seated very quickly. Our server was very nice and willing to accommodate all of our request for substitutions. We started with the fruit nachos. They were good, but we did feel a little misled as the only fruit was grapes. They also took quite a while to come out. We got our appetizer in the time I would have expected an entree. I ordered the French dip and a side salad and enjoyed both. My daughter got a burger and found it to be absolutely inedible. The waitress was very nice and had her entree removed from the bill. We were a little nervous walking into Shortfields for breakfast as there were literally no one else there at 8:30 for breakfast, but not long after we sat down they started filling up. This quiet relaxed restaurant served delicious home cooked breakfast. My TR Bowl had the most light fluffy hash browns with none of the usual grease. So good!! Great little find. Our family of 4 ate here today and while we had high hopes for a good breakfast we all were very disappointed. Our server was nice but forgot multiple things and had no apologies. The hollandaise sauce was separated and gross, the hash browns were undercooked and we asked for cheese in the hash browns and it was a cold, folded up piece of American. I come here ever so often and I would like to say this place is quite quaint. Always love the food here and the this is the only place I know where I can get a nice pretzel bite not a ball not a full pretzel just a nice little pretzel bite. The salads are fantastic and always fresh and I know everyone who works there works hard. Any food industry weather humans know it or not isn't an easy task having to deal with difficult customers and trying to keep business thriving with competitive restaurants but, they do it all and more. We ordered clam chowder, half of a turkey sandwich and a French dip. The turkey sandwich was fine. However the chowder and French dip were far from fine. The French dip had absolutely no flavor and the au jus tasted like greasy water. Unfortunately the chowder suffered from lack of flavor. Good or decent cooking is not a hard thing to do. I don't understand charging $18 for a sandwich with gray meat and no flavor. We will definitely not be returning. read more

We were in town for a couple of days and tried Shortfields for dinner. Enjoyed it so much we returned for breakfast a couple of days later. So glad I came! Great location in Travelers Rest. They have indoor and outdoor seating. The staff was very friendly and attentive. All the servers seemed to help each other out in terms of getting what people needed, which you don't see very often. But the fact that they all work together was nice to see. So much food!! We stumbled into this small town eatery after biking the entire Swamp Rabbit trail. We were HUNGRY! This place did not disappoint. Huge portions, reasonable prices, great service, hot coffee, and comfortable seating. I could not have been happier. I had the best Monte Cristo I have had in my entire life. Absolutely perfect and it was enough to put me in a diabetic coma but it was incredible! Thankfully we had the entire bike ride back to Greenville to work off the sugar but I was so glad we took a chance on this place. It has a very down home, family kind of vibe with tons of outdoor seating that I am sure is much more popular during the cooler months. Just left Shortfields for the first time. I don't usually write reviews but I had to come brag about them! My husband and I went for lunch on a Wednesday. It was not busy and we did not have to wait at all. We ordered the spinach dip appetizer, I had the French dip with tater tots and my husband had the trout with mashed potatoes. Spinach dip was by far my favorite spinach dip I've ever had. The French dip was so juicy and had so much flavor and the horseradish sauce was delicious. My husbands trout was cooked very well and had lots of flavor. The mashed potatoes were so creamy and flavorful as well! I think my life changed over a club sandwich at Shortfields. Maybe not because of the club sandwich but literally, I think my life changed right over top of it. Its interesting how major life stuff happens over a meal. I think my personal Hallmark movie plot would go like this: Retired beach guy meets a girl from the mountains north of Traveler's Rest. She shows him the place where she grew up. There is a montage of art galleries, a brief 50 yard portion of the Rail to Trail, there is coffee. The soundtrack is up-tempo. They laugh. They talk and discover they have a real future over a club sandwich at Shortfields. Well, and fried pickles. Fried pickles just makes me laugh saying it out loud. Ours were hot, hot, hot. Not spicy, but we couldn't wait, we dove in and burned our mouthes. Worth it. Fried anything is the antidote when you're hungry. The sammie was excellent but way too much. I should pause sometime and count it all out but I think they use a whole loaf of bread in making it. Deli ham and turkey are food of the gods so there can never be too much of that. Clemson was playing and they were losing at halftime to Boston College. There was some localized anger at that sort of performance and the anger was well deserved as Clemson should have hung 70 on BC before halftime even without that long haired QB they have. As expected, Clemson roared out of the tunnel after half-time and took care of their business. Lots happens every day in people's lives. There are some amazing people around and they do amazing things and lives are changed, sometimes in an instant--maybe not over a club sandwich all the time--but why not? Don't stop. Keep driving. Just left after a Father's Day brunch. My wife said it was the worst meal ever. I agree as our breakfast was literally cold as if left out on the counter for 20 minutes. Eggs were overdone also. But again COLD. Cold eggs, cold hash browns, cold pancakes, cold French Toast. We live in TR and there is no decent full breakfast in town that we've found. WINGS & Salad only review. Boneless and regular wings are off the charts AMAZING. Salads are always fresh. Probably the best wings we have ate. The boneless are NOT heavily breaded - actually, I'm not sure they are breaded at all. We've tried multiple sauces or dry rubs and each are great - never too over the top seasoned (salty). We would give a 5 star review but ... the "white wings" are a bit dry and definitely bite size nuggets rather than the description which implies they are like chicken tenders/strip size. I started with a dragon berry Mojito. Serve tall with mint and a gentle Barry flavor it's not overpowering. The dinner salad that comes with the meal was a nice surprise of mixed greens, cheese, cherry tomato and cuke slices. Try the bacon dressing for something different. I had the Carolina mountain trout, seared nicely and topped with mushrooms, asparagus, pine nuts and micro- greens. It was drizzled with butter for even more flavor. Tried a spot in Travelers Rest and was quite pleased. My Wife, a good friend of our's, and myself decided on this place. Bri (pronounced "Bree") was our bartender/server. Very attentive but not overbearing. Made for great customer service. She kept the bar area clean and clutter-free. We ordered a pimento cheese and bacon burger, an order of the deviled eggs, and a reuben. The deviled eggs were quite tasty. A lot better than those at Golden, Brown, and Delicious. With the crabmeat on top, i was not upset about the price. The reuben is the best i have had in Greenville to date. Still a bit too soggy on the bread. I gotta find the spot that can make a reuben without the bread being sooo soggy. The pimento cheese and bacon burger was just like my Wife likes. Good job. Because a happy Wife is a happy life. With a full bar and bathrooms that were extremely clean, i believe i will be checking in here in the near future. Totally recommend this spot. read more
