I manage an oilfield services company that operates near Carlsbad, NM. One of my field technicians was coming back from a job around 10 pm on a Friday night when his truck broke down on a stretch of road with no shoulder for him to pull off. This road is frequented by drunks shooting up signs, but it was freezing temperatures on a winter night in NM, so he had to stay in his vehicle with his emergency lights on. We called Short's Wrecker Service and hired their on call guy to come out and tow him into town. After accepting the job, he called my guy back to tell him that the police had arrested a couple of folks and had just called him to tow their vehicle to the impound. So he was going to do them first instead and that it would be another hour on top of the original 1.5 hours it was going to take - nevermind that we had A) called first and B) he had accepted the job. I called the NM State police and asked if this vehicle they needed towed was in traffic or otherwise posing a danger, and the dispatcher said no it was not. So I asked if they wouldn't mind asking Short's to pick up my guy first since he was in a dangerous situation; to their discredit they told me TWICE that essentially wasn't their problem. To protect and serve my ass. I called Short's and told their driver that I had talked to the police and they said that the vehicle they wanted towed wasn't posing a risk. I asked him again if he would get my guy since he was in a precarious situation. The driver's answer was that I should get somebody else to tow my employee - knowing full well that his dually service truck with a flatbed was too heavy for a typical tow and that they were about the 10th outfit we'd called. Short's was going to let a guy trying to get home to his family sit on a dark, dangerous road on a Friday night in a broken down truck in freezing temperatures, so they could score more money from a tow/impound job from the police first. Short's Wrecker Services is a zero-integrity business. If you're reading this I urge you not to support these kind of people. They are a disgrace to common decency and are willing to risk a person's life and go back on a deal if they think they can swing an extra buck out of it. read more
