I really liked this Nursery the first few times I went in spite of the slightly higher prices. It was an enjoyable experience shopping there. But the last two times I've been has been a bit ridiculous. I had to walk the entire property just to track someone down for help. The owner chuckled and said thanks for tracking us down. Sorry but it's not the job of your customer to have to do that. Then she said "we didn't think anyone would come in because it's so hot". Then why are you even open if you're not ready to help customers? Time before, they were open, but I couldn't find a single person to help. It's unfortunately looking like it's not worth my time to shop here. read more

We had a number of different issues with our irrigation system and our technician Dion P. was right on time, had great, no-pressure, super clear and common sense recommendations, explained clearly exactly what was needed, what was included, how long it was going to take. Competent but expensive. The work to replace part of a valve on my home sprinkler system took less than an hour. I knew exactly what was wrong and what was needed when I made the appointment with Cari. I asked her for an estimate. She said the charge for a basic service call is $155. But my bill came to $300. Turns out the $155 only covers the "evaluation". The actual repair work costs much more. I'll look for a cheaper service next time. read more

Belgard recommend Shovel & Thumb aa a local company that does thin paver overlay on concrete using their thin paver products. We organized a meeting for this morning to only receive an email stating they don't do this type of installation, at the last minute. However, they knew everything about our project from the beginning when we scheduled this morning's appoiintment. So much for being referred by Belgard and for wasting my time to organize my schedule to meet them this morning. I will be contacting Belgard that they should remove Shovel & Thumb from their referral list. read more

We were provided great service on our irrigation system courtesy of Dion! He listened to all of our concerns regarding our new sod and even installed a drip line for our fruit trees. He was thorough and professional and did everything we asked him to. He helped us find a leak below the sod that we didn't know we had, and promptly fixed it. We hired Shovel and Thumb to landscape an approximately 4000 sq. ft. area. The work included irrigation, lighting, demolition, boulder placement and planting. The reason we chose them was because of their proven skills, professional certifications and that the quote was reasonable and thorough. They definitely stood apart from the others we were considering. The project started and finished on schedule, in spite of some things we added to the project along the way. They were very willingly excepted change orders and didn't try to gouge us. Communication was exceptional throughout the entire process. All of the work quality was excellent. My apologies for taking so long to review this wonderful company. This is no reflection on them whatsoever, but rather my own subsequent health issues.  Shovel and Thumb provided a multitude of projects for me: sprinkler system, paver patio, landscaping and vinyl fencing to name a few.  They offered options, full disclosure on prices and quality of products and stuck tight to their bids for services.  Cohan and company truly exhibit all that the consumer can possibly desire in regards to excellence in customer service, professionalism, timely communication, consistency in quality of work, regular updates regarding project flow, consistent start times and hours worked, knowledge base, excellence in quality of service, kindness, follow through. The list could truly go on and on. I have yet to be more impressed with a service I have hired as I have been by them. They are truly the cream of the crop. Many people say "you get what you pay for"! Unfortunately this is not always true. Often times in life we pay much more than what we get. Cohan and Bryan are an amazing team of professional landscapers! We were recommended this company by a landscape designer who said if you want the job done right this is the company. After moving into our new home we were faced with a mud pit for a backyard and neighbors with a window overlooking our backyard patio. We needed landscaping with a privacy solution and Shovel and Thumb took our design (provided by Gregg and Ellis Designs) and elevated it beyond our dreams!! They began the job with a contract that spelled out every step of the process. The team showed up on time and worked 3 long days, into the dark and cold night, until the job was completed. They installed all plants as the design specified and built the most AMAZING Planter/trellis . Upon completion they throughly cleaned the job site of any evidence that they were there. Good job and was done in two days but we paid for 4 inches of mulch and got 1-2". We informed them and they brought out more mulch and left before asking if it was enough or if we liked it. It was still not even close to being enough, plus they damaged our fence. They did a really good job wth everything but didn't follow through on completing and doing a thorough job, which gives them 3/5 stars since they're not coming back to help and we're out $500 in damage to our fence and to pay for more mulch to install. read more

I spoke with Cohan today about coming out for a site visit for a potential landscape installation job. Cohan said I'm kind of at the edge of their service area, and it wouldn't make sense for them to consider the job given how many other job opportunities they have that are much closer. I completely understood and had no problem with that. We ended up talking for a bit longer about hardscape material, as I'm having a difficult time figuring out what would be best. He explained the pros/cons of the various options and installation methods. I found him to be quite knowledgeable, and I had the distinct impression that doing a high quality job was very important to him. He had nothing to gain by spending the time on the phone with me, but he did so anyway. I really appreciated the useful info that he conveyed to me, and I wanted to acknowledge him for that. If you are looking for a landscape contractor and you are within their service area, don't hesitate to give Shovel & Thumb a call! read more

Shovel and Thumb exceeded my expectations. I told them my vision to renovate my backyard and Cohan knocked it out of the park. They always came when they said they would and were respectful of my family, my property, and the neighbors. We had them demo an existing concrete patio, install a paver pathway and a paver patio area, build a seat wall with lights, build a trellis, re-route sprinklers, add landscaping, and put in new sod. Two guys did this all in maybe 7 days of work. Our backyard could not have turned out any better. read more

I called Shovel and Thumb to come and repair our sprinkler system. They arrived on time, explained all the areas that needed to be repaired and completed all of the work in a very timely manner. These guys were great. Cohan worked with us to make sense of the plan we'd gotten from a landscape architect, combined with our own hand drawn sketch. Once the project was underway, the guys were obviously pros. They removed the existing plants (including an old apple tree), built a fence around the back yard, installed walkways and patio, put in sod and a whole array of plantings - all in about a week. When we had issues with the variety and placement of a couple of the trees, Cohan cooperated with us to make whatever changes we needed to make everything right. It worked. I just spent an hour reading a book out there, and it's freaking beautiful. read more

We cannot say enough great things about this family team! Kind, punctual, honest, smart, thoughtful, and get it done right beautifully! We started out with a vague, foggy idea of some changes to be made to our backyard. The artistic ideas for a stone wall and walkways with down lighting and up lighting and solutions to drainage issues in our yard were amazing!! The work was done beautifully, with everything cleaned up each night. They did not hesitate to make changes from our original plans in order to improve things, although nothing was done without our OK. As my husband said, "Sometimes you just get it right"...and boy did we get it right with our choice of Shovel and Thumb! ( We actually are hiring them to completely redesign our front yard next!) They were very professional, helpful, friendly, and responsive. We hired them to rip out our old back 'yard' and install new sod and rock landscaping. The new yard looks great! They did a great job at a reasonable cost and were very easy to work with. Also, it's a small father/son business, which we were happy to support (and means you don't have to try to communicate the same thing with a different person every time you contact them). Ok, I really wanted to try and do business with these guys. I have some irrigation and drainage problems and my lawn was pretty sick. These guys seemed like a solid recommendation from Angie's and Home Adviser. Getting their attention however takes and act of congress. I called them, then at their suggestion used their website to schedule a visit for an estimate. It took over a week, but they finally wrote back with and appointment. I stayed home from work and... nothing. When I called, the guy clearly couldn't care less. 'Go find someone else' he told me, so that's what I'm telling you. Go find someone else. They can't even organize well enough to set up and keep appointments, thus they are undependable. Do you really want to hand someone who is undependable a big pile of money to do work? I don't think so. They must be printing money, because they really do not care about getting business even a little bit. I'm happy that business is good for them, but that also means they don't care about their customers as much, and will likely inflate their estimate because, hey, they don't need the business. Run away and find someone else! read more
