We hired J's to replace the 9 foot tall wooden beams on the front porch of our custom craftsman home. Josh and Kyle were methodical in the process of supporting the porch, removing the old beams and installing the new ones. Since there were 6 beams, the process was done in two stages. The team demonstrated excellent skill in installing the metal anchors in concrete and then cutting the beams to fit perfectly in place. This was a very technical renovation and we couldn't be more pleased with the professionalism and skill of the construction crew. The renovation was also a very fair value. I wanted to build a retaining wall and landscape behind it. Greg came out, measured and told me I should probably set the wall back a foot in case the sidewalk ever needs to be torn up. Since that nearly happened this summer with a plumbing issue and recently the city has come around and asked everyone on the street to fix their sidewalks, I thought it was prudent. It might even be code. I had a couple other companies out to bid. No one could get to it for months. J's price was competitive and included a tree, 6 pushes and 20 perennials, and they could come out the soonest. The materials they used here better, too. They also set the pavers I had laid out for the trash cans so they stay put. They even edged them with a metal strip. There were a few miscommunications--one my fault, one the crew leader's fault, but these were corrected. I even had to ask them to split part of the bill between my townhouse neighbor and myself, and let me divide the payment between credit card (3.4% charge, which is standard) and a check. read more

Nick operates with high integrity. Before I explain that, I must share a short backstory. For more than a year, my husband contacted countless (10?) local landscape companies to request bids for landscaping and irrigation. Many of them were referrals from friends, yet everyone we contacted turned out to be a dead-end road. It was very difficult to get anyone to show up, let alone respond with a bid. Was our yard too intimidating for other companies? I don't know why we had such trouble finding a landscaper, but when my husband looked at Yelp in April 2019 and found J's Custom Landscaping, we hoped it wouldn't be another dead-end. Much to our delight, Nick came through and responded! Not only did he respond, Nick worked within our schedule to meet with us promptly and he earned extra points by providing a bid. While he's not the cheapest bid, we are happy we chose him and his company. They worked with us on plant selection and worked hard to finish the job before the proposed finish date. I was very impressed that he had a portable bathroom dropped off in front of our home for the employees to use. The mailman and Amazon delivery drivers appreciated it, too! Usually, when we have maintenance done, the employees come in and use our bathroom or mysteriously go somewhere else. I'm glad Nick treats his employees well by offering this for them. We were pleased with the work Nick and the crew did, and we even inquired about landscape maintenance. Now we also have our yard "tuned up" weekly by them. Their 1-year warranty on plants is very impressive. We had some plants die within the first couple months of being installed and as I type this review, his crew is in our yard replacing all the dead plants. We also had an issue with the irrigation system, but Nick was swift to respond and take action to resolve things. We're all human. Mistakes happen. I'm an understanding person. I look at how Nick handled the issues that arose and I applaud him on how he addressed them. We hired J's Custom Landscaping to transform our backyard in March of 2014. Before we started the project we got bids from multiple landscapers. The reason we picked J's Custom Landscaping was because the owner, Jay, took the time to really listen to what we wanted to do. We started off the quote with literally everything we would want in our yard, we then customized the request to fit within our budget with getting those most bang for our dollar. Our project ended up consisting of, two stacked boulder retaining walls (3-4 feet tall), a beautiful waterfall with a small pond, putting in a french drain to help with our soggy weather and drainage from the neighbors uphill, expanding our lawn to double what we had before, new sprinklers and reinstalling our existing gravel path and side French drain due to the need for equipment to get in the backyard. The project was bid to take approximately a week, weather permitting. Jay's team did a wonderful job of turning our small backyard full of elevation changes into a larger feeling space we could get out and actually enjoy. Our friends and family who come over are always wowed by how beautiful and functional the space is now. Recently we had an issue regarding our reinstalled french drain on the side of our yard that caused for water to start pooling in our path and flow under the house. As soon as Jay and his team heard about this they came out, assessed what happened and reinstalled a new french drain. To me it is one thing to make a space look nice, but to stand behind your work three years later is amazing and so appreciated! We just purchased a home that has been regularly serviced by J's since it was built 6 years ago. we called him directly as that was the number the previous owner gave us and he answered right away and suggested We call his scheduler after walking through a couple of trouble shooting steps didn't help. We did and were told by the scheduler we would receive a call back and could expect an appointment in 7-10 days. Not my ideal timeline but understandable. We just received the call from the scheduler who told us they can't honor that commitment as they are too busy with their commercial contracts and commitments but if we wanted to they could maybe squeeze us in at some indeterminable time but no promises or ideas when that could be.... Weeks or months..... Being a new customer i can understand having trouble fitting us in, just not excited by the way it was handled, nor their commitment to the existing infrastructure they have installed and maintained all along. read more

The guys are friendly and they do a great job. However our HOA has asked them to be done earlier and they haven't respected that request. They are here until dark and using their loud equipment like the leaf blowers. That is the last thing I want to hear for hours once I get home from work. Then my dog barks all evening because they are walking around the yard. I wish they would respect our request to come earlier or just use the loud equipment earlier in the day and be quieter in the evening. I can't even hear the tv over the leaf blower. read more

We had someone come out and do an estimate last week. They were very prompt and kept in touch with me to confirm that appointment and arrived on time, even a little early. First off, I thought the man who came to do the estimate was very knowledgeable about landscaping, he was able to give a lot of tips, suggestions and ideas for things when I asked, but at the same time didn't really seem to genuinely care about what was happening. He seemed kind of bored and disinterested, didn't ask us a lot of questions (I had to do most of the talking). Honestly, it felt like we annoyed him or something, he just was not into the project or us. He kept saying things were "very expensive" when I asked about it, and it wouldn't have bothered me so much if he hadn't kept saying it and if the vibe he was giving off wasn't so, I dunno, negative? Like, just give me an idea of a number or cost, don't keep telling me how expensive something is--it was a little condescending. I was getting the impression he thought my husband and I didn't have a lot of money or something, or couldn't afford things. Also, thanks to family who have done plenty of landscaping in the past, I found out the "ballpark" prices he was giving me for jobs was overcharging me, or more expensive than the average (which he also had told me they were "very expensive"). He also just didn't come off as very friendly. Was just very cut and dry, kind of a harsh or rough personality, and not passionate at all. Didn't at all seem excited about working with us. Overall, the whole vibe I got from this experience was he didn't really seem interested in working with us. It was like he was trying to scare us away by saying things were "very expensive." He had a very nonchalant, un-dedicated attitude towards the project. He made us feel like we were just another customer on his list for the day. I'd have to say if you're looking for someone who's passionate about landscaping, this isn't going to be the place. Super knowledgable, though, if you have questions. But it seems like these guys are here for the money. They probably do good work seeing from the reviews here on Yelp, but maybe that's why they know they can charge more? On a positive note, I was able to develop a plan for my backyard by talking to him when I asked him questions. So some good came out of this experience. Like I said before, I'm sure J's does good work, all these Yelp reviews can't be wrong or fake (I think), but it's important to note the other experiences, like ours. read more

We called J's Landscaping after a local construction company ruined our yard and never called us again. Nick Hagan with J's handled our project and worked with us to create a functional and beautiful yard. Nick suggested installing a French drain to divert drainage from the new, higher grade left behind by the construction company's botched excavation, Nick's crew leveled the displaced dirt, removed debris and tree stumps they uncovered in the process, and built a beautiful sandstone boulder retaining wall. The controller that came with our house was difficult to use and ancient, so we upgraded to a easier wifi capable one that can be remotely scheduled / activated . Also I accidentally cracked one of the exposed pipes with my yard Debri bin. Jeff was on time and courtious and even cleaned up the old wiring since they were helped together by just duck tape . From quote to our finished new backyard J's Custom Landscaping did an excellent job. Nick gave us a quote that was accurate and there were no shortcuts to the work. The project was on budget, on time and the crew left a clean site every night! The scope of the project included over 100 feet of retaining wall, leveling, French drain, gravel side yard, garden area, beds for trees, shrubs, mulch, top soil, new sod, etc. Nick helped us with our initial design and implemented exactly to plan. Nick suggested a Certified Professional Horticulturist who helped us with the tree and plant design and selection. The crew followed her design plan. I'm a little late in getting this review complete but better late than never... First off, we live in a cookie cutter sub development so our front and backyard is very postage stamp and typical of these types of neighborhoods. We love to be outside as much as possible so our goal was to create a space we could relax in. We wanted some grass space for our youngest daughter to do her cartwheels and tumbling and a space with a large gas fire pit and a pergola for a new hot tub. So first, we hired a landscape designer, Debbie Brooks from Creative Garden Spaces NW. We took her plans and received 3 different quotes and J's Custom Landscaping was the best value by far, but not the cheapest either. At the end of the their 2.5 week timeline in July of 2014, our backyard was completely gutted and transformed into the perfect backyard oasis we have always wanted. We are truly the envy of all our neighbors. What sold us on J's is the excellent communication and the experience and skill they brought. Jacob was so informative and thorough; anytime we had a question, he answered either the same day or by the next morning via email. I even was able to text him whenever I needed to. Santos was the PM for the job and he and his team were amazing! My husband and I have never seen a harder group of workers as these guys. Our neighbors kept saying how they couldn't believe they worked from 8am - 6pm barely stopping for lunch. In addition, we have a 1 year warranty period where they will be replacing a few plants that didn't make it through the year and any other fixes we need. Very reassuring to know we had that to fall back on. They even built a pergola for us for our new hot tub - they had never built one before. However, if I had to do it again, I would hire someone else to build the pergola. They had to come back several times to fix a few things. But we knew what we were getting into and at least we were able to give them the experience. It just isn't their expertise. J's is also our weekly landscape service and they have been doing a great job. They fertilize, prune, etc when they need to yet the price is the same per month - it just includes it all. Very nice and easy. I wish I could add before and after pictures as they are amazing but I believe they are also on their facebook page. They used to be anyway. I couldn't be more pleased with my new lawn placed by J's. From my first phone call I was treated as if I was their #1 priority. Communication before, during, and after my work was on time, every time. The team that installed my irrigation system also took the extra step of expressing their concerns to their team lead, Nick, that I may have a large water bill. They were tying in new zones to irrigation already placed by my builder and noticed that it was set to water for way too long. They adjusted all the settings to be more water conscious yet still give my yard all it needed to survive a summer planting. Nick gave me a call so I wouldn't be alarmed at my first bill. I've also received follow up checks on my yard (it's gorgeous). I'm so impressed that I'm already asking them for a quote to place a boulder and tree out front. For reference, because this can sadly make a difference in some cases, I'm a single female and feel like I was treated fairly and without regard for that. My price was worth every penny.
