I-like many, during the pandemic skipped out on dental visits and hunkered down. So until today I haven't seen a dentist since February 2020 and with my problematic dental history that was a mistake. An old filling from a different dentist popped out and it turned into a hot tooth leaving me in a lot of pain. Now I know it was only by chance, but of all the dentists I called, Union Dental Shrewsbury had the soonest appointment available and there I went. They have an easy online form to fill out so you don't have to sit and fill out a bunch of paperwork there. The receptionist was friendly and welcoming, the place was clean and still taking COVID guidelines seriously. Unfortunately I'm an unintentional difficult dental patient, I tend to require an extra dose of numbing and additionally it usually takes a little bit longer for the numbing to set in for me than others. Today's visit for whatever reason, this particular tooth was a very hot tooth and despite double doses in more nerves the tooth remained active and angry even after half an hour. It was looking like the filling would have to be rescheduled and not once did my dentist Mrs Kim nor did her assistant (hate myself for forgetting her name!) make me feel like a burden at any point. I was a bit embarrassed about it but both were very comforting, attentive and taking it in good stride. I understand business is business and they have other people in need they have to attend to so I was fully accepting that Id be going home still with pain. I could tell Mrs.Kim was stressed from that and really didn't want to do that to me (wouldn't be her fault!) but she didn't give up. Whomever had an appointment after myself was an extremely good Samaritan I wish I could thank personally-- because they willingly let go of their appointment so that Mrs. Kim could try again to work with my ridiculous tooth. Thanks to this Samaritan and this team my tooth eventually chilled the hell out (after a full hour....) and I was able to get the filling. I do feel like most dental businesses (and I honestly wouldn't blame them) would definitely not have attempted to reschedule the next person---to help a Masshealth patient no less. They went above and beyond and not once did they show any irritation towards me and were purely kind and dedicated. I was seeing a different dentist before who couldn't get me sooner but the bedside manner is like night and day and I'll be completely switching to Shrewsbury Union Dental. In my whole life this was the best experience I've had at a dentist- even if the next patient had refused to give up their appointment. Now I feel the need to pay it forward some how!

Any billing questions or concerns have always been handled immediately and tactfully. Dr. Eric and Dr. Peter Bryan (son / father) have always shown a high level of professionalism since day 1. I was introduced to them through my Mom and Step Dad who are also patients of Dr. Peter Bryan. I have had everything from intensive cleanings ( ultrasonic scaling), routine cleanings, and a successful referral when I needed to have a bone graft done in the front to save my bottom teeth from damage incurred from my tongue ring. I give them 5 stars because I have never been shown anything less when it has come to mine or my children's oral health.

My daughter kept getting stuck with him. During a checkup after her cleaning he cut her gums (not the gum line - but the actual gum/cheek tissue) so bad with his instruments that she couldn't chew for over a week. We were sent a survey after that visit since we were new patients and I responded that the visit was great, but mentioned that Dr. Zhang could be a little gentler next time. We returned 6 months later, and he could not wait to tell me that it my daughter's post visit gum irritation was from not brushing and flossing (she actually takes pretty good care of her teeth and does both routinely). He took no ownership for cutting up her cheek/gum conjunction which I viewed right after we left the office when it was fresh and bloody. My daughter dreaded every appointment thereafter because of her experience with him each time. At this next visit, Dr. Zhang tried pushing fluoride treatments on my daughter. We don't use fluoride toothpaste because we have sensitivity to it (rashes, cracked corners, and blistering around mouth). We use natural toothpaste at home that doesn't have fluoride. None of my 3 kids have ever had a cavity (they're teenagers) up until the last visit (was due to braces). With good brushing/flossing habits at home and the sensitivities I don't have them get the add-on treatments (that aren't always covered by our insurance). When I declined the fluoride treatment, Dr. Zhang gave me a long lecture about it, instead of asking me why we chose not to have it. He also assumed I hadn't done any research (my sister is a hygienist, so we are well informed in addition to keeping up on the studies). I told Dr. Zhang about a study that found no difference in preventing cavities if fluoride was used or not. He knew about that study but tried to push me to just do it anyway. Today my daughter and I came in together for our back to back cleanings. Normally, they come out and ask for consent for the X-rays and fluoride for my daughter. I found out after the appointment they did both without asking me for my consent this time. My daughter is one of the people in our family that has a reaction to Fluoride toothpaste so we will be monitoring for a reaction. When it was my turn, the hygienist informed me I was due for X-rays. I politely declined (which I have never done in the past FYI) the X-rays and explained I was worried about too much radiation in that area. I recently (in the last month) had 3 CT scans (in area), and 3 sets of X-rays from the base of my spine up to my head just the day before my dental appointment. I was concerned about how much radiation that area of my body would be getting in a very short period of time and requested they be done at my next cleaning. The hygienist informed Dr. Zhang I didn't want x-rays. He comes in, frown faced, not bothering to say hi, and began to tell me how I need them. First off, I had a medical concern for not wanting them at that moment. But what if I couldn't afford them? Patients have a right to decline any part of treatment for any reason. Does Dr. Zhang understand that? I told Dr. Zhang that I didn't appreciate being pressured and that I would like to be informed but not pressured by him. He didn't like my response and demanded that I tell him why I didn't want the X-rays. Again - BECAUSE I SAID NO should have been enough. Even though I didn't owe him any explanation, I explained about the tremendous amount of imaging I'd had done very recently in the area and wanted to give my body a break until next time. He then responded that I could not get my cleaning because I chose not to have the X-rays. My response back was that there wouldn't be a next time because he was fired as our dentist. Can anyone tell me why I was denied a cleaning because I wanted to delay getting my X-rays? Right. There is no rational reason I was denied healthcare (my cleaning). I was denied care because he doesn't like me. Thats ok because me and my daughter definitely don't like him. Do I doubt Dr. Zhang can fix teeth - no, probably not. Does Dr. Zhang have patient skills - absolutely not. Is Dr. Zhang gentle when he should be - nope - my daughter has had cuts and scrapes with every visit. Does Dr. Zhang respect patients' opinions - he could care less. I also suspect Dr. Zhang has a quota to make each month because he seems very dramatic and insistent about certain treatments he claims are critical/urgent. I've never been to another dental office where the dentists behaved like Dr. Zhang. Something is not right with that guy. Before Dr. Zhang denied me to get my cleaning, my daughter came out of her appointment and begged me to go to a new dentist. She was very happy when we left that office because that's exactly what we will be doing.
