Kendall Park, NJ - the unassuming location of this restaurant in the corner of a strip mall belies its presentation of some of the best Chinese food I've had in NJ/NY, and in a region with no shortage of good-to-great authentic Chinese cuisine, that's saying something! When it comes to food, I never judge a burger by its bun, so thanks to Yelp for helping me find it. The sign in the window says "Asian fusion" which usually sends me running as it's often a cop-out label for bad mixed-up Asian cooking, but this is authentic y'all, meaning true-to-tradition dishes with a sometimes more contemporary application of ingredients or flavors. The "fusion" part must come from the fact that they have a small Taiwanese section as well as the main Szechuan/Sichuan menu, alongside a few familiar Chinese-American favorites like sesame chicken or broccoli x protein, so you can get that here too. Everything we ordered was phenomenal! Great flavors, generous portions, cooked with confidence and finesse. Compliments to the kitchen - they really know what they're doing. Not a single dish was lacking. They even put out peanuts at the start and serve fresh orange slices at the end of the meal. Very old school. Shu House has become our new Friday night tradition. They have a nice mix of more typical americanized Chinese dishes and a ton of traditional options and everything is very good. We usually just pick up takeout because it seems super busy and we live close, so I can't speak to the sit down experience, but our food is always hot and fresh and the staff is friendly. Although I do like our other spot (China Garden), Shu House is very comparable on price and the food is more flavorful.. very generous with the ginger and garlic which I appreciate. My husband's favorite is the salt and white pepper chicken. I really like the three cup chicken and the Sichuan ma la udon noodles. The cucumber appetizer is also very good. When my friend's Xmas party was canceled, I started looking for a good Chinese restaurant on Xmas and found great reviews here. Glad I made a reservation via Google Assistant b/c it was a full house plus tons of people waiting (1hr) for their takeout orders. Great sign! We ordered quite a bit for 3 of us b/c we're excited to try them out. We loved them all especially the wontons in the authentic sauce as it should be (not in sesame or peanut sticky sauce), the salt/pepper chicken as how I remembered from back home, the delicious noodle soup with tender beef and tendon, and the flavorful black bean fish. The restaurant is nice and clean. They're busy but the kitchen was pretty quick. The waitress brought out the dish as it's done, not waiting to serve all dishes at once. Shu House is one of the 3 places I will miss most dearly after I leave NJ. Born and raised in China, I can say that Shu House serves some of the most authentic Chinese food in town. Usually I'm really discourage by Chinese restaurants on Yelp with a good rating. But not this place. Surely you'll get orange chicken and fried rice. But there are just so many stars on the menu. The braised pork belly is so tender that you barely have to chew. Get a spoonful of that sauce to mix it with rice and oh my god, I just ate two bowls of rice in an instant. Crispy ducks is never disappointing either. Duck meat is very lean, so you need to eat with the skin, ahhh hot and crispy, and then you dip it in the plum sauce oh my god perfect. And then there's the cabbage, the double cooked pork, the spicy lamb pot, the golden tofu, the list just goes on and on. I just cannot say enough good things about this place. I come to Shu House and part of me just feels like I'm home. I've soon become familiar with the servers. They'd nod at me with a smile every time I'm there. They know my go to orders. They slide in extra peanuts because they know me and my friends love them. I especially like coming here during the winter. There was a time I visit almost every week. It's warm and calming and homey. In here, the harsh winter stops bothering you. You are warmed with sincere food and genuine love. Their items are mostly Sichuan style with the signature spicy, numbing heat, but they have many other delicious options as well. Every dish I've tried so far has been great. This is a Chinese Sichuan restaurant, but we came bc we heard they had authentic Taiwanese food too! They have like 5 Taiwanese dishes...we dried 3 of them and they all slapped. They must have a Taiwanese chef or something bc these are legit. We got the Taiwanese popcorn chicken (came with basil - authentic), braised pork rice, and pumpkin rice noodle. Actually the pumpkin rice noodle was not exactly as I've had it before but it's still delicious. Service was great, super friendly and she knew exactly when we needed the bill bc she was paying attention to the patrons. The meal even came with free oranges, I haven't had a Chinese restaurant serve me fresh fruits after a meal in so long, they used to do it all the time! We mostly ordered from the Taiwanese section of the menu, but I can never resist cumin-lamb-anything, so we also got the hand ripped noodles (which tbh did not seem hand ripped (no rough edges), but they were tasty nonetheless!). We also tried the popcorn chicken (salt & pepper), the spicy wonton, scallion pancake, and one of the stir fry entrees. All were well prepared, and nicely flavored (especially the popcorn chicken - a properly seasoned version is rare to find in the U.S.). First thing I appreciated was the complimentary nuts placed in front of me upon arriving. I was also offered hot tea which I declined since it was 84 degrees outside but I thought it was a nice touch. I decided to order Hot & Sour Soup which was savory, thick, warm & absolutely delectable! Perfect way to start lunch and really hit the spot. Writing an update 2+ years later simply for the Dry Pot Tofu. This isn't explicitly available online, but it's there if you order over the phone and ask for it. They can make the dry pot entirely vegetarian with tofu. Dry pot is one of my favorites and this was supremely tasty. One of the best I've had in a long while. There are a few more vegetarian options now than before (in 2021), but I'd highly recommend getting this if you can. One of the great things about this place is that they do accomodate for vegetarians so you don't have to worry about things such as having oyster sauce in vegetarian food, etc. etc. read more

This Szechuanese restaurant on Route 27, Kendall Park, proved to be an excellent place for a late lunch business meeting in this part of Middlesex County. The room is on the small side, with tables along the walls and kitchen in back. Their lunch menu is a short version of the dinner options, organized by cooking style, with secondary choice of protein. Simple to understand and move quickly through decisions. We went with Cumin Style Lamb, Dry Pot Style Fish and Flash- Wokked String Beans from the Vegetables list. We started with small bowls of Hot & Sour Soup. They were all excellent. The soup had plenty of mushroom, shoots and slivers of pork mixed well with a strong vinegar base. The lamb was shedded and tender surrounded by sautéed onion, green/red pepper, carrot and red chillies. Loved the flavor and continued to pick up little bites throughout our conversation. The fish was lightly floured and fried to have a a mild crunch when eaten. It had similar vegetables and warmed the tongue and membranes in a hot embrace. The green beans were a deep green from cooking, and snapped when bitten. They were a perfect complement to the rest of our meal. The best part of the experience was the fact that the lunch menu was less expensive than the evening's, but was more than enough to satisfy our hunger. That, along with the progress made in discussing new business opportunities, made Shu House very memorable, and a likely choice for follow up negotiations. read more

While still waiting, a party of 4 arrived. They walked into the dining room, past those patiently waiting in the lobby to be greeted by the owners. They were seated immediately. Management was extremely rude. Basically telling all waiting to move outside to wait as the lobby was being blocked. It was less than 30 degrees outside. We left, vowing to never return. When I first tried this place, it was during the pandemic, so you could only get takeout - they wore masks and were very professional, which I really appreciated. We tried a variety of dishes on a whim, on a snowy and cold evening. The food surprised us, with some old favorites and other new things. Pork with garlic sauce was excellent, as were the unusual, but delightful sesame noodles. Dry Pepper chicken was a huge hit; the General Tso chicken and vegetarian string beans made it to breakfast the next morning as well (!!). Generous helpings, quality ingredients, and classic sensitivity to details. The only shortcoming was the over-sauced crisp spicy cucumbers, drowning in liquid. Probably just a mistake.
