In my four years as a student on Princeton campus, there hasn't been another restaurant remotely close to SC House in terms of the consistency of their offerings and also the deliciousness of their food. The lunch specials that run M-F from 11:00-2:00 is so so good. the 土豆丝 is absolutely to die for. the restaurant may be a bit of a walk from main campus especially if you are not coming from the engineering quad, but wow, is the walk worth it every time. the free 蛋花汤 that comes with every lunch special entree order is great, and each of the specials are very affordably priced. I highly recommend the rattan pepper fish, the kung po chicken, and the lamb with cumin. outside of these options, I also highly recommend trying their pork belly entree (if you are coming for dinner) or their egg tofu dish. prices are not as good for dinner portions but I think if you are eating potluck style with friends it's worth it. service is solid - the staff make sure your waters are filled and that you are waited on properly. food comes out decently fast and the bathroom at this establishment has always been clean when I visit (probably over 20-30 times at this point) SC House also does a great job offering catering discounts to student groups so that aspect also deserves a shoutout. It was not good at all, but I'm keeping my original rating, since the entrees are so good) I've never had a better tasting pan fried chicken dumpling! For main entrees, I've had Shredded Pork in Garlic Sauce, Kung Po Chicken, Broccoli with Chicken, Eggplant with Garlic Suave. All are outstanding. Please note the number of chili peppers next to each dish indicating level of "hotness"! Although, we went with more mainstream entrees, the majority of the options are very unique and not ones I have seen on other Chinese restaurant menus. Delicious Szechuan restaurant on Nassau Street in downtown Princeton. Very authentic, many dishes I would not eat, but had a delicious lunch there! Looking for someplace really good and dropped in here for lunch. I can tell you the inside is beautiful and very charming. A very authentic place for Szechuan food. I'll be honest and say that there were many things on the menu that I would probably never eat. And I'm pretty, adventurous! But I bet they're all delicious! I settled for a more familiar fare with their beef and vegetables meal. I did not order from the lunch menu which had lots of choices that would easily suit my palette. I ordered off the menu. It was a big serving and came with delicious rice. It was extremely delicious and for a beef and vegetable dish about as good as it could get. Came here for dinner while in Princeton; maybe my standards are too high for a small college town, but was honestly underwhelmed. This is supposed to be a Szechuan spot, but both of the meat dishes were not spicy at all. Fish fillet with hot pepper - probably the best of the three dishes. The fish was nice and crispy, and although it lacked heat, I felt that the seasoning was flavorful. I did feel that the bread to fish ratio on many of the pieces was a bit too high. We visited on a rainy afternoon on a weekday and settling into a place like this for lunch was perfect. Since moving to the area, I've been looking for a place that had more than the typical American-Chinese food, and more specifically a place that had Chongqing style chicken (chicken, dry chili, szechuan pepper). Jackpot! This chicken is seriously addictive. Crispy and the right level of spice. We also ordered a pot of tea, steamed pork soup buns, pudding tofu with salted egg yolk, lamb with hot pepper, and sweet sticky rice for dessert. All very good. Our favorites were the chicken and pudding tofu with salted egg yolk (the latter we tried based on seeing pictures on yelp). Service was polite and quick. I've still yet to eat at many restaurants in the downtown Princeton area. From what I can tell so far, there seem to be many expensive restaurants with average food and fewer good casual places with service. While I did say this place is a , I would say it is more on the 3.5 than anything else as this place is a very solid Chinese restaurant. I haven't ordered everything from here but I would say that the diverse food that I ordered, almost all of it was really solid except for braised pork was a bit too saucy and the taste was a little bit all over the place. My favorite was pork intestine and jellyfish. Overall I think this place is a good Chinese place to try and one of the better ones in the area. We ordered delivery on a very snowy day. The mapo tofu was delightful -- even without the minced meat -- and so was the white rice and the pork soup buns although the size of the latter was a little disappointing. The biggest disappointment was the fish fillet with hot pepper which costs about $30 but the bread-to-fish ratio was astoundingly high. It just tasted like fried bread with barely any fish and even when you pulled them apart, you could barely see the fish. Truly not worth the price. Came here for lunch recently with a friend and had a decent experience. First, we were seated immediately and ordered from the lunch menu, which was very reasonably priced! Soup and entree for ~$10 is not bad. I will say that most of the authentic, really tasty sounding stuff was not available on the lunch menu, but I was still excited for my beef and broccoli. You can order the food to your desired heat level - my friend and I were contemplating getting a heat level of 4 peppers, but our server warned us that it was extremely hot, so we ended up getting 3 peppers instead. Comedically, the hottest rating (5 peppers) was called "Hell" - sounds fun! Each course of our food was delivered promptly. The egg drop soup was pretty tasty! Nice and thick, with good flavor. My entree was a little more disappointing - the cut of beef didn't seem like it was super high quality, and the flavor wasn't amazing, although it was indeed quite hot (which I was happy about). As mentioned before, the lunch menu didn't really include many of the authentic dishes. Those were in the "real" menu and were much pricier - I imagine they are probably more flavorful and interesting. Other than my entree being a little underwhelming, the reason why I gave my experience 3 stars was the service being quite slow. It wasn't super busy but my friend and I were waiting around for our check for something like ~20 minutes, I'd say. Especially for lunch, I usually want my meal to be a little quicker. I honestly really liked this place and was working my way through the menu. I was a regular weekly customer and was starting to know the servers all by name. However tonight the owner/manager/chef decided to have a heated argument with me on the patio after dinner. Having dinner with my parents, we ordered double cooked pork and mapo tofu which were both great, these are the two dishes we order weekly. Our third dish is something new each visit and so far, they were also very tasty. Tonight we ordered the Stir-Fried Kidney which was absolutely terrible. It's a dish I've ordered at multiple different restaurants and I really enjoy. When it arrived at the table, we all excited took a scoop to our plates. However on first bite, the kidney was string tough overcooked way way way too spicy and STINKY! I think they chef knew that it was bad and tried to hide it with a ridiculous amount of spice. We eat here all time, I know what their "normal" level of spice is. This made me tear up and stop eating. I wouldn't have complained if it was only too spicy as that wouldn't be their fault, but it was STINKY. We immediately called the server over to tell him it was stinky and he took it back inside. He was soon back out with the plate to tell us that the kidney just arrived today so it couldn't possibly be bad. He tried to put the plate back on the table and I told him that we didn't want it. We proceeded to try to enjoy the rest of our meal with totally smoked taste buds. When the check arrived, I saw that the kidney was still on my bill. I told the server that the kidney shouldn't be on my bill as we sent it back. She told me to go talk to the boss lady inside. He called her out to the front counter where she once again told me that the kidney was fresh and arrived that day and couldn't possibly be stinky. She also told us that we ate most of the dish so she couldn't take it off the bill. I very simply told her that I wouldn't be paying for the kidney as it was stinky, we didn't eat it after an initial bite, and we sent it back. I told her to get me a corrected bill and went back to my table outside. The boss lady followed me out and started threatening to call the cops if we didn't pay the full check with her cell phone in hand. I hate making a scene anywhere but at this point I was rather upset. I told her to call the cops if she wanted to and I would happily wait for them to arrive. I once again told her the dish was stinky, bad and inedible. It got rather loud and everyone on the patio and much of the street was looking at us at this point. She went back inside and shortly after a large man with an apron on came out, possibly the chef. He immediately started screaming at us that we had better pay for the dish. He said that if we got upset stomach tonight then he would refund our money tomorrow. Another round of the same comments commenced, very loudly. At this point as they clearly weren't going to back down, I put enough cash down to cover the bill minus the kidney, handed a nice tip directly to our server, and then we left. I will never be back. It's such a shame because while I didn't enjoy the kidney dish at all, I definitely would have kept going their to keep trying more of their menu. It was a place I looked forward to going each weekend. Such poor customer service from the owners. Perfect foodie place for lunch. This is not only an authentic Sichuan cuisine menu, but its prepared very well. When I stopped by here for lunch on a Tuesday, I was surprised that there were only 3 other tables of folks here. This is either a sleeper, or, I may have just come in at a very light traffic day. I started out with jasmine tea. I was expecting the tea to be included and loose leaf, but instead, for a fee you get a tea pot and it is in bag form. However, the tea was very good and I prefer hot tea to cold water when eating this type of rich food. There are lunch specials here, but I was very hungry and wanted to order off the regular menu. After I placed my ordered, the cook came around to the various tables and gave us all a complimentary small soup. It was truly delicious. It was an egg drop with seaweed soup and full of flavor. I should have asked what its called, since I will mostly likely order it next time I come. I started out with wanton in chili sauce. I wish it was a little more spicy, but this version came out luke-warm and mild to medium spice. The flavor of the chili sauce was amazing and I even poured some of the sauce over my rice after I finished. The wanton was not too thick but was also not too thin like in some places. It was toothsome in the right consistency. Very pleasureful dish to eat and different than the some of the Philly Chinatown versions I have had. I would definitely order this again. For my main dish I had dry pot cabbage. This dish was served in a metal plate over a burner. It was scorching hot temperature wise and I asked them to turn off the burner. However, the spicy level was perfect. This is a spicy dish which really hit the spot. The cabbage was not greasy and the pork belly was just the right size and amount. This is mostly cabbage which makes the dish not too heavy. The seasoning was spot on as I have had this dish in other spots where its overly seasoned and can get salty. I prefer to pick it up, dab it over white rice and eat it or pick it up with some white rice. The rice can cut down on the spice lever but also adds a nice texture to the bite. Rice is included, but for me the serving size was too small relative to the dish. It may be around a cup. I ordered another rice which I did not finish, but was well worth the order. As you can imagine, lunch was very filling, but not overly heavy. One thing I did not like is that they did not bus the table. They left the finished plates on the table as the meal progressed. Its not like they were super busy and it would have been more pleasant to have the table cleared. I am sure if I asked them to do it, they would have, but I wanted to see how it played out since I was alone. If I was with people I would have asked them to clear the plates for sure. The menu is extensive with many authentic offerings which you don't typically see in an American style Chinese. This is certainly a foodie destination. Especially if you can come with a Chinese person who may know how to better navigate the dishes. Its one of those places. I would not hesitate to come here with 4-8 people for the purpose of ordering a whole bunch of items to share and wash it down with a few bottles of good wine. Schouse is by far my favorite restaurant in the Princeton area. They specialize in Sichuan cuisine, but the other regional Chinese dishes I've had there have been good as well. I'm a bit sad they opened during my last year at Princeton so I didn't get to experience them for long--the food is great and the service amazing and super friendly (especially Jan!), and I highly recommend paying them a visit! They also frequently introduce new dishes, so there's always something new to try. They also often have specials on holidays that they post about on social media (Facebook and WeChat). They're also happy to make adjustments to the seasonings in dishes if you ask, and many of their dishes are also vegan-adaptable and gluten-free-adaptable. I believe they're also adding a new chef who specializes in dim sum soon! In addition to indoor and outdoor dining, they also do local delivery over the phone. They're also on a lot of third-party apps, but it's cheaper to call them and order directly. I've tried an embarrassingly large proportion of their menu. The following dishes are some of the stand-outs in my opinion, but really basically anything on their menu is great, especially the dishes in the Jinli specials and Szechuan dishes sections of their menu. They're super helpful with recommending dishes if you ask! -Pigs Trotters Soup 老妈蹄花汤 ($16.95) - super comforting and delicious, and the pig feet are really tender :) -Sweet Sticky Rice 八宝饭 ($7.95) - eight treasure rice sticky pudding with red bean paste, dried fruits, and an optional osmanthus syrup. Super delicious and not too sweet: this is my favorite dessert here. -Pickled Beans with Minced Pork 酸豆角炒肉末 ($16.95) - slightly spicy Sichuan dish with a great sour note , highly recommended if you haven't tried pickled long beans before. The ratio of pork is also much more than it looks from the menu photo. -Stir-Fried Pork Kidney 火爆腰花 ($16.95) - this dish is quite spicy and also has some sweet and sour notes. The kidney is the perfect texture and is cooked with wood ears and peppers. -Rattan Pepper Fish 藤椒鱼皮 ($16.95) - on their lunch special menu, a really numbing dish of tender fish fillets and zucchini strips -Crayfish Over Rice 小龙虾盖饭 ($14.95) - crayfish in a delicious spicy sauce served on white rice. I think this is one of their most popular dishes on Chowbus, and for good reason! -Wonton in Chicken Broth 鸡汤抄手 ($7.95 for 8 pieces) - their pork wontons are made in house and are super fresh and tasty -JinLi Mapo Tofu 锦鲤麻婆豆腐 ($12.95) - vegetarian mapo tofu, the best in the area: wonderfully spicy and numbing. It's even better than the meat-containing versions at other nearby Chinese restaurants. -Spicy Sour Cabbage with Fish Fillet 酸菜鱼 ($19.95) - good and also a big portion (it comes in 2 deli containers). I requested it extra spicy and it indeed was very spicy, with both dried and fresh red chilis :) -Water Spinach with Fermented Beancurd Sauce 腐乳空心菜 ($15.95) - they don't always have this vegetable available so just ask! They cook it really well: it's fresh and delicious. -Braised Pork Knuckle 红焖肘子 ($26.95) - giant pork hock from the steamed section of the menu, really tasty and great value. I think this dish is enough for 4 people. -Braised Baby Cabbage In Broth 上汤娃娃菜 ($14.95) - this vegetable dish is served in a super tasty broth. It's not vegetarian: it contains shrimp and spam (along with century egg and tofu). -Fish Filets In Hot Chili Oil 锦里水煮鱼 ($25.95) - classic Sichuan "boiled fish" in spicy sauce. It's a huge portion with Napa cabbage and wood ear underneath the fish. -Pudding Tofu with Salted Egg Yolk 蟹黄豆花 ($14.95) - simple but very tasty: soft tofu with lots of salted egg yolk. Came to New Jersey for a week and half vacation. Excited to find Chinese food around the area. Went for lunch with family, so disappointed. Wasted my time and money. The worst meal I have so far in NJ. Expensive for such quality and service. Service=no service, very awkward. Food taste bad. I'm Chinese, these taste worst than what I cook at home. Fish is frozen fish. The soup and the fish is not hot when arrived our table. Some slices of the frozen fish is still a bit cold. The soup is super salty (some sour). Nothing like the picture (in picture is live fish sliced not frozen fish filets). The frog pot is even worst. All I eat is flour, oil and bones, and is overcooked. The pancake, definitely fried in oil, but pan fried. Crunchy but oily inside out. Only dish finished is wonton in chili oil. It's okay, eatable. In total spend 70something for 4dishes before tip. If you've never tasted pig ears before, this is a good introduction plate. Flavor wise it was really good, however the white cartilage of the inner ear needs to maybe be pressure cooked longer. I've had authentic Sichuan dozens of times, being from NYC and all but this place takes the take for me as my favorite restaurant. The spice level is measured from 1-5 and so you can order dishes that cater to your spice tolerability. They also have a separate menu for Chinese-American food such as Kung Pao chicken and Beef with Broccoli, etc. As for the authentic menu, it's as hardcore as it gets. I am not one for boiled blood curd, jellyfish or pig ears but knowing that they serve such items tells me that their chefs are the real deal. They also serve dishes that are off menu, depending on the day, week or month. I started with an appetizer of spicy Wontons in hot chili oil. They were very delicate and the dough melted in your mouth. The meat inside them was lacking, but the chili oil seeped nicely into the folds of the wonton. These were not too numbing and not too sweet. Just good spice and lots of scallion. I then ordered a bowl of thin mei fun noodles topped with crushed peanuts, mushroom and minced pork. The assortment of flavors from the sichuan peppers, cilantro and scallions blended well with a slight citrus tang. The minced pork and crushed peanuts provided a nice textural contrast and a small pool of chili oil sat on the bottom of the bowl and so make sure you mix the noodles before eating. This dish was very numbing and spicy. Next was the best plate of the day, the Fish in Chili oil. Served traditionally with cabbage and onions, you are served a massive bowl, loaded with what seemed like a half a head of cabbage, 4 slices of Basa fillet, a pile of scallion and a ton of dry red chilis. The spice level was medium and flavor level was through the roof. Not only were these ingredients sitting in chili oil but also a sort of stewed gravy existed, smothering everything in massive flavor. I then ordered a beef short rib dry pot. It was very good, the beef was a bit tough but sliced thin so it wasn't too bad. The beef was probably overcooked but it paired well with the mushrooms, onions and peppers, you can't beat that combo. Dry chili was slathered over everything, and it was the least spicy dish. Last but not least, the eggplant in garlic sauce. This dish was fantastic, a tad too sweet perhaps, and made sweeter from the almost caramelized onions and bell peppers. I highly recommend eating here and dining indoors. Spied this place driving down Nassau Street and what an amazing discovery it is! Bruce helped set up the outdoor table and shade, Jin got us acquainted with the specialty dishes and how they are prepared. She even talked to the truck driver who left the noisy engine running ( he shut it off). So cool!! The food is delicious, we ordered everything with less salt, and they came out perfect. I particularly love how the dishes were immersed in tasty chili oil. It is heaven for hot and spicy food lovers. Perhaps they were having a bad day with their online ordering platform, or with the kitchen staff, but this experience with Schouse last weekend was a complete fail. Allow me to elaborate. The order was for Lamb Chops with Cumin (looked great in the pic) and Chongqing Crispy Chicken. The price for each was in the neighborhood of $20, exorbitant on any scale, but calling for near perfect execution to justify the expense. This was Nassau Street, Princeton after all, so I was willing to cut them some slack and indulge. Their monthly nut was probably gag provoking. Maybe so, but it was certainly gag worthy when it reached our kitchen table. First, we didn't get the lamb chops at all, but a different dish of lamb pieces in cumin sauce. It was not the crisp fried chop finger food anticipated, but something much more mundane. It was spiced right, but poorly prepped, leaving tough fat and gristle on too many pieces. Second, the chicken was a disaster. It was far from crisp, and composed of skin, organs and a little actual meat. Again, credit for the right spices (including hard to find whole Szechuan peppercorn), but even the burn was unable to hide the gross ingredients beneath the flames. It tasted of liver and related parts, and was simply inedible as chicken. $21 down the toilet, along with the contents of the package. I'm not the guy who usually offers my credentials as a means to bolster my opinions here, but you might want to know I spent two years in Szechuan and Yunnan on business, and loved the cuisine throughout. I devoured the street food, often cooked and served off the back of bicycles late at night. I have a cast iron stomach, and willingly ate things that crawled or slithered. This dish was so offensive that it challenged my ability to swallow. Not sure where they learned to cook, but they sure wouldn't make it in Chengdu. read more

Sadly I'd have to get rid of a star of schouse. We came here for a really busy night. Ordered garlic eggplants, spicy beef and mapo tofu. The wait was very long which was fine. But the dishes came out rather disappointing. The mapo tofu was overpowerly salty and the beef has a smelly taste of it. Not sure if the beef was fresh. Hopefully they can improve their performance during busy time!!! read more

We wanted to try the dumplings here and we were not disappointed by anything. The food is authentic and outstanding. They were so nice to make sure we were ok with the spice levels. If you want delicious authentic Szechuan please do yourself a favor and come visit Schouse! read more

Food is authentic if you are used to Taiwanese style food. Taste very much like "home made meal". The reason I give a 3 starts is for their service. It is super slow. It's more like a mom and pop restaurant. It's great foe a day to day dinner, not for special occasions. read more

If you are interested in trying authentic Sichuan cuisine, this is the place to go. We ordered wonton in spicy chili oil and mung bean noodle as appetizers. I can taste the Sichuan peppercorn flavor and both dishes have the perfect numbing spicy level. They do have some American Chinese food options but I highly recommend their traditional Chinese dishes. Can't wait to try other dishes next time. read more
