The menu changes daily so don't stare at the menu through Yelp and decide what you want before you arrive :P Walk in, order/pay at the bar, then grab a seat and they deliver your food to you. Barkeeps could definitely be more attentive to the register and taking orders because that's the setup. As for food, the scallop apps were melt-in-your-mouth delicious and the fried squid was so-so. I ate here late on a weeknight, and it's definitely nice to have somewhere different to try at such an hour. The place is a dark bar and they do card at a certain point in the night. You order at the bar and can either eat there or find a table. We didn't get drinks that night, but for food we tried seafood ramen and the spicy miso ramen. I may have just been hungry, but this was great ramen! Birmingham doesn't have many other places focusing on ramen right now, so I'm excited to try their other flavors. Everything here is amazing. The staff and the owner are super sweet and treat you like family. This is the only ramen in the city that I will eat. The only unusual things I found in my experience is that there's no table side service. You walk up to the bar, the bartenders take your food/drink order, you pay there, & then you are given a number. They then deliver the food & that's it. After that I felt as if their service was now complete. Any other requests we had we had to walk up to the bar to get. Shu shop is a great new addition to downtown. It has a very dark, and mysterious atmosphere. The staff were all very friendly and helpful when it came to the menu options. I was blown away at how fresh and delicious everything was. I started off with a beer from there great happy hour special. For an appetizer I had shishito peppers which were cooked to perfection with a dash of salt and the hamachi sashimi which was very fresh and clean tasting. For an entree I had the pork ramen which was hands down the best ramen bowl I have ever had. The flavors in the ramen all complimented each other so well. I'll start by saying this is not your typical Japanese steakhouse. It is definitely a more upscale, an intimate, nicely decorated gastropub. I absolutely love the atmosphere. The drinks are great as well. A buddy of mine ordered a "old dirty fashion" and it was probably one of my favorite drink! Okay so your wondering now why only 4 stars? Picked up a wonderful dinner to go from Shu Shop last night. They were extremely accommodating to a vegan order and everything we got was delicious! For the price, the portions were extremely generous and we were full just off our appetizers. We got the rice, shishitos, brussel sprouts, dumplings, and edamame. The brussel sprouts were a real standout! We ordered the vegan ramen as well, we were too full so had it for dinner tonight. I cannot wait to return to have it in the shop hot and fresh!! Not only do they have awesome food, great atmosphere and staff, but they take health safety seriously. We walked in with a party of nine, willing to split into three groups of three people to meet the restaurants COVID standards and we were told "they did not want our business." I like the place, it was cute and ambient setting. I didnt like ordering system. Lined up to order was fine but it took too long to order. There were 3 bartenders but just 1 dude was able to take order. He was going in and out of the bar area and serving others while taking food orders from ppl. Food and table service were good. I found this place while searching for the best Ramen in Birmingham and I think this is it. I was a bit surprised when they asked for my I.D. at the door, but when I walked in I realized this place is a bar/restaurant. It was very crowded, but the service was fast. They have a large selection of alcohol, specifically sake. I ordered the seafood ramen and it didn't take too long to come out, but once it did it was delicious. Izakaya is a Japanese term for an after-work bar that serves up small plates, food and drinks with a neighborhood vibe. This place is exactly that. Such a weird and cool vibe. Feels like something you would find in the Lower East Side in NYC, not Birmingham, Alabama. Truly special. You order at the bar, but are free to sit anywhere. Sitting at the bar is great because the sake flows, the bartenders are great and the eclectic YouTube videos they play behind the bar are so weird and amazing. They have a variation of sake that is some of the best I've had. The unfiltered sake like Snow Maiden is truly delicious, and the glasses are served in the traditional Japanese wooden box with overpour. They make excellent craft cocktails served on a single rock. And they have a nice selection beer (and even sake) on draft. Food-wise, the spicy miso ramen is my favorite. But they are all great. Personally I love the small plates the most. You have to get the brussels, if for nothing more than the sauce they come in. The crispy fried nori (seaweed) is delicious. The tuna tataki is sushi-grade and melts in your mouth. I'm a fan of the sashimi too. The shishito peppers are fantastic to snack on, but be careful about 1 in 10 will get you. But nothing downing a little Sapporo or sake won't take care of. You can also keep it simple and get crab claws and edamame or just go straight to the ramen. There's veggie ramen too, but for me the pork ramen is where it's at. This place is 10/10 and a super unique place I am proud to have in our city. It's on BHM's shortlist of best spots in the city. read more

I tried the Shu Shop last night, at the request of a friend. I was a little skeptical of the menu, but I agreed to try it out. It's a small space, with a bar on the left side and booths and tables on the right side. I couldn't bring myself to try any of the ramen. I ordered the edamame and Pork Gyoza (dumplings). Two items that I am familiar with and love. My friend was feeling a little more daring, so she ordered the Seafood Ramen. My edamame came first, which was great because I was starving. I was disappointed to find that it was cold. For some reason, cold edamame doesn't do it for me like hot edamame does. The seasoning on the edamame was very good though, I will give them that. The pork dumplings were not good at all. They were bland & the sauce didn't help any. My friend ate almost all of her Seafood Ramen (besides an unidentifiable ingredient) and said it was good but not filling in the least. She also noted that it was bland. I definitely don't recommend this place if you're really hungry. It left A LOT to be desired and I had to go home and snack because I was still hungry. It really strikes me more as a lunch place, besides the bar, but they don't open until 5, so. Ah well. You live and you learn! read more

The lack of lighting in Shu Shop is disturbing. People had to use their cell phone flashlights to read the menu. I'm surprised people haven't tripped or fallen down their stairs yet. In addition to their all black walls and lack of lights they also blast music. So not only is it difficult to see, order, and hear anything I don't see how it is possible to have a conversation of any substance here... I ordered their shoyu ramen which was adequate but definitely not worth the struggle to see or hear anything while I was in there. read more
