Evidently I'm OFF the bandwagon by thinking this place was just Meh. The lighting was low enough to make me feel like I was going blind.. or to make me paranoid like there was something wrong with the food and that they hoped you wouldn't notice if the lighting was too low to properly see what you're eating... if it was JUST a bar, then thats fine... but it's mainly a restaurant. I wanna SEE what I'm putting in my mouth! Anywho. All service was through the bar; no wait staff. I was with my mum and she was getting hangry. So we ordered a lot of food.. 3 shareable plates (tuna tataki, pork dumplings, brussel sprouts) and a ramen for each of us. The tuna tataki was just okay. It was pretty much just like any seared tuna on any menu anywhere you go these days. Not bad. Nothing to write home about either though. The pork gyoza were cooked slightly better your standard takeout dumplings, but otherwise they were a bit small and extremely bland. The dipping sauce was just a chili oil and didn't really add anything to the dish. The sweet and sour roasted Brussel Sprouts had the potential to be great (I LOVE roasted Brussel Sprouts!) But they were OVER roasted. There wasn't just a charred flavour, they were straight burnt! Then for the Ramen... well. It was ramen. The broth was decent, I enjoyed the spice of the spicy miso.. buuuut The noodles tasted like straight out of the pre-packaged 50 cent packs and the pork was only fat with no edible meat. I don't like veggies in mine, so I picked them and the egg out... by that point, I might as well have just been eating the 50 cent stuff.. I would have saved a ton of money.. read more

To start, what a vibe this place is. Low ambient lighting that transports you to a ramen shop somewhere in far away. The TVs are always playing something relaxing. The bar tenders are so friendly and make divine mixed drinks at a reasonable price. I'm still not over the fact my martini was only $10... it's been $18 at restaurants way below the caliber of shu shop. While the ramen is delicious, my significant other and I choose to indulge in the small plates and appetizers. I'd say skip the edamame (cold and nothing special) but everything else is an absolute must try! We fight over who gets the last scallops and piece of tuna- but the beef short rib absolutely melts in your mouth. This is an interesting place. It is more a bar than restaurant which surprised me but they do offer small plates, snacks and ramen. The night we were there, unfortunately, they were out of ramen. The bartender said that this happens sometimes on Mondays, so we ordered several snacks and small plates. There were four of us and this was our dinner so we a ordered several different items. We had the shishito peppers with yuzu salt, the pork gyoza (dumplings) the veggie gyoza (dumplings), the yuzu kosho shrimp, the seasoned rice, the Chashu and greens (braised pork belly and on a bed of bok choy) and the Ika kara-age (marinated fried squid). The food was amazing but the cost was very expensive. Make sure you go with friends that are willing to split the bill because you can rack up alot of money before you know it. Tell everyone to bring their wallets!!! When you are there, you have to try the Shishito peppers. They look VERY spicy but the taste is very mild. read more

This place is one of my favorites to eat at in Birmingham! Have known about it through my wife for a while but I've recently moved to the city and I would eat it everyday if could! My personal favorite is the Spicy Miso Ramen, you can't beat it!! The atmosphere is unique and classy, their music playlist is a chefs kiss! The atmosphere: Loud downstairs, but quieter in the back and upstairs. If you want to yell over everybody else, sit downstairs. If you want to actually catch up with friends and hear each other, definitely sit in the back area. The food: Hot and sour Brussels sprouts - I really enjoyed these. I love the sauce they fry them them with, crispy but also flavorful. Spicy miso ramen - this definitely doesn't compare to the ramen you can find in big cities, especially on the west coast, but for Birmingham I think this is a good start. Price: I think their prices are decent, but could be better. $6 for the hot and sour Brussels sprouts, $13 for the ramen. I used to pay that much for Ramen in San Francisco, so it could be a bit lower here. Service: I like the order at the bar idea, makes the whole process much faster. After seeing Shu Shop on Instagram for some time, I decided to go check it out since I'm always up for good ramen. Upon entering, I noticed that the environment is quite dark providing quite an intimate experience. We also chose where to sit. I'm not sure if that is normal or if it was because we arrived right when they opened. Also, to our surprise, we had to paid for our food when we ordered it, rather than after eating. While this makes it easier to leave whenever we finish, it also does not allow us to properly tip because we essentially paid before receiving service. While the broth is incredible and flavorful, I was not expecting to receive only one chashu pork slice with my bowl. For the price (over $16 with tax and tip), I do expect there to be more meat. I believe there are other options that are more reasonably priced for what you can get. read more

So after hearing so much so much about here I've finally had Time to stop in and try It! First off the interior is very beautiful and urban. The environment was really modern and the music choices wasn't what I expected but it was still good. The only thing about the interior I personally didn't like was how cramp it is and the limited seating. Also they are bar order only so I personally prefer having a waiter or waitress to order from instead of having to keep getting up to order something but the service was very friendly and helpful. Now on to the food! I ordered the spicy miso ramen, shoyu ramen, pork gyoza and Ika Kara-Age with some sake. Both the ramen bowls were absolutely delicious with very distinctive flavors and unique tastes and will come back to try the others eventually. The sake I ordered was Hideyoshi Lachamte and it was a slightly sweet refreshing sake that I would without a doubt get again, just know the size of the bottle is a little small for its price but is a must try. Sadly I didn't enjoy the appetizers as much, the gyozas were too crispy and hard while the calamari was mainly crumbs with very little meat so it was definitely a let down for me. Overall I did enjoy myself here and i definitely see this area as more of a bar setting than a ramen shop but the ramen itself was definitely on point! I will come back to try more bowls and to try more appetizers but I highly recommend getting the sake here or the cocktails. Also keep in mind that parking is EXTREMELY limited so you will have to find somewhere to park at. read more

I'm going to call this venue, "my little piece of New York" during a Birmingham winter. Anyone who knows me, knows I love New York--but it's winter and I'd rather weather a Birmingham winter than a New York one. A good friend of mine introduced me to Shu Shop, an Izakaya restaurant downtown Birmingham. I absolutely fell in love with this little hidden gem, because obviously it's been here a good while and I had no idea about it. Well, it's been found and they will get tired of seeing me! The lantern lit atmosphere is inviting and the funky music makes you want to dance in your seat a little. It is a very intimate space; however, just enough space. There are booths across from the bar, a few tables on the way to the very clean restrooms and a couple tables upstairs. So NYC! For an appetizer, I ordered the Tako Puppies, which are basically octopus hush puppies served with a wasabi remoulade. For my entree, I had seafood ramen! It was cold and a little rainy outside, so this was an ideal entree for the weather. It was hot and ready! We didn't have to wait long for the food, which is a plus. The seafood Ramen- Ramen Dashi kombu broth seasoned with soy tare. Topped with fried shrimp and squid, menma, bok choy, green onion, and pickled radish. Yummy! Came here with a friend, we were only in town for the night. For a ramen place in Alabama I wasn't expecting a lot, but it was solid! We got the Tako Puppies, which were a great portion with good flavor and the pork gyoza which also were so good. We also ordered the Shoyu ramen. Not the most complex flavor profile but it was good. The restaurant is very dark and kind of small. It definitely is more of a bar vibe and you have to be 21 to even enter. It got quite loud the later in the evening it got. I love the ambience of this place and they have plethora of choices when it comes to Sake. If you are a Sake connoisseur, this place has a variety of Sake that does not disappoint. It's perfect if you are a solo eater because you can sit at the bar and also enjoy the full dining experience. I always order the crab claws from here and the scallops. The lack of one star would have to be the amount of salt they add to their food. It's a hit or miss but majority of dishes are over salted and if they managed the amount of salt they put in the food, this place deserves all the stars and more. Their ramen is really good but again can tend to salty. It still does not deter me from going every time only because it's a very unique place for Birmingham and no place like it. read more

Neat little spot that offers good drinks, a chill environment, but mediocre Ramen You walk in and order (and pay) at the bar and they give you a number and you find your own table. They have a decent amount of seating with extra space in the back and upstairs. Service was okay and food came out on time. Appetizer - We got the crab claws, which were good. Be careful when you eat them because sometimes you can get some crunchy bits but the taste and dip were both delicious. Ramen - We wanted the tonkatsu, but sadly they were out the night we visited. So we decided to get the spicy miso and shoyu. Eggs: Probably the best thing about the ramen. A bit cold but perfectly soft-boiled with a gooey inside. Noodles: The noodles differ depending on which type of ramen you get, the thin noodles on the shoyu are okay, while the spicy miso had different noodles that were soggy. Broth: Broth for the miso and shoyu were both on the salty side. Chashu: They had a slightly smokey flavor. Was also a bit chewy. Sidenote: The spicy miso had brussel sprouts in it which added an unpleasant burnt flavor to the soup. Might be back to try the tonkatsu and get some drinks, but there's probably better ramen elsewhere. read more

The lotus root chips are a must try and the tuna tataki is DIVINE! Tons of interesting items with high quality ingredients. The scallops were perfectly season buttery pillows of heaven. MUST TRY. The downside here is the service. It's bar order only, therefore you're always waiting, and the staff doesn't tend to be super helpful unless they know you. It's rare that I am not satisfied with food. I don't know if it was just a bad night or that's how the food taste on a regular, I was not a fan at all of the Ramen. It was very bland, lacked plenty of flavor. Once I got home I had to doctor it up with seasoning from my cabinet. The drinks were decent. The crab claws was the best part I ordered two orders of those. I wouldn't recommend this place with it being one of the few ramen places in Birmingham I was disappointed and probably wouldn't give it another try. I was excited to try Shu Shop on a friend's recommendation. I love ramen and Japanese comfort foods. However I cannot recommend it. Atmosphere was cool but really dim inside. They want it intimate, I guess. Service was very good as well. Not too attentive but didn't ignore us. Now for the biggest disappointment the food. I got the shoyu ramen, with a specialty Negroni cocktail and some takoyaki hush puppies. The ramen was boring. No other way to say it. The pork inside was great but after that it was just meh. The ramen egg was not marinated, literally just a boiled egg. The Negroni was not mixed. I had to stir it myself after a horrible first sip. The takoyaki was the biggest disappointment though. It was a hush puppy with the tiniest piece of octopus. My girlfriend put it perfectly. "Hush puppy with essence of octopus." It was just hush puppies made with dashi stock. The best part of the meal was the Sapporo I got at the end. Honestly not worth a return trip. It's a trendy place for people to hang out but I wouldn't go back myself. read more

Not the usual traditional Charsui that's usually used in Japanese ramen; it was more of just a single slice of smoked pork belly. They were sold out of pork gyoza so I got the crab claws which I didn't care for to be honest. They were good at first but quickly became too salty as I continued eating them; I ended up having to peel the breading off the last few. Have you ever walked into a place where you wanted to try everything? Well we did our best. I need to be clear my daughter is a vegan so we did take some toppings off and that def. messes with the flavor. What we liked most, hands down we all agreed was the ramen. It was solid, from the noddle's to the broth they hit this one home. Here is our small plate order Pickled vegetables ( so good it had a nice amount of heat was eating along side the rice) Brussel sprouts(very good) shishoto peppers(very good) octopus balls (more of a down south version don't think Osaka think hush puppy tasty) rice (bland could use some vinegar and we did remove the non vegan top) edamame (bland could use some salt but we did remove the non vegan top) The mix drinks were very nice. First and foremost, it has an extremely trending setting, but if you can't see at night, you definitely will have a hard time seeing in there. Second, The service was mediocre; the servers act like they don't truly care if you're dinning with them or not, and you're a bother to them. However, the most mediocre part of the whole thing is the ramen, I don't know how this place has 4 stars. Might be because it's in the south and many don't know what ramen is suppose to taste like. Wow! Shu Shop is awesome! The interior almost feels like a club. Cool and dimly lit with mood lighting and sporting edgy artwork on the walls, Shu Shop's vibe is unique in Birmingham. It almost makes you feel like you're part of a secret, elite dining club. I had gotten the insider scoop from a friend, so I knew exactly what food to order. I live for a good Moscow Mule, so the Sake Mule was my cup of tea so to speak! The soy butter scallops were tender, juicy, and savory with a pretty garnish of sprouts. The real star was the hot and sour Brussels sprouts! They must have put crack in those things. I could have eaten them till I burst. They were roasted till they had crispy bits and glazed with a sweet and sour sauce and garnished with what looked like saffron. For my entrée, I got the spicy miso ramen with roasted brussel sprouts, pork belly, soft boiled egg, shiitake mushrooms, green onions, noodles, and a delicious, savory miso broth. So filling and comforting, and slightly spicy. I didn't even mind that I was sweating it out on a summer evening! My friend got the garlic mazeman ramen and also enjoyed it greatly.
