Ok, I'll admit, my food was AMAZING, but everything else was greatly disappointing. First off, our party arrived to a rude employee asking for our IDs (even though we were just there for dinner). Everyone in our group had theres, except for me, who had forgotten it at home. I was told, "if you looked older, I would let you in." Yes, I'm in my 20s, but this kinda started our meal off with a sour note. After returning with my ID, I was seated last at a party of 8, and I was forced to hang on to the side of the table with one cheek hanging off. They only had one extra chair, so I was greatly uncomfortable all evening. Impulsively ordered the pinky finger (or whatever it's called) cocktail. The drink arrived, which me and my friend both ordered, and I literally almost threw up. The waitress recommended, but it literally just tasted like ocean water. The Shu Shop is open and is serving outdoors-only during the COVID pandemic. There are about six small tables that are lined up along the narrow 3rd Avenue sidewalk. The tables have stainless steel, umbrella style propane heaters to keep you warm. A warm bowl of ramen soup is perfect on a chilly night. On this visit, I ordered the Spicy Miso Ramen bowl. I love miso soup, it has that distinctive savory flavor from fermented soybeans paste. The broth was rich, salty, and spicy. It was very good, but maybe a tad too salty. The ingredients were well thought out and executed nicely. Two thick slices of chasiu had a nice charred touch. The Brussels sprouts and shiitake mushrooms gave the meat a good balance. The ramen noodles were tender, but not over cooked. The atmosphere was okay. The car traffic on 3rd Avenue can get loud, but still sitting outside was fine. The restaurant was playing rap music. Came here for after thanksgiving dinner. If you are looking for something different, this is a place to go. Nice music, low lighting i with l booths. Bar setting is available too. We all had crab claws and we were pleased with our orders. I had kimchi with mine. My daughter had beef short ribs and the wife had Brussel Sprouts. Everyone was pleased with their sides as well. The menu and atmosphere is mainly Japanese. The food comes on what they call small plates but the servings are not truly that small. The kimchi was but it was filling. They were out of the sushito peppers the day I went. So I ended up ordering the brussel sprouts for an appetizer and spicy vegan miso ramen for entree. The brussel sprouts were very good and filling. The ramen was just ok. The broth lacked depth of flavor. I had to add salt and Sriracha to give it life. I like the ambience but the service was disappointing. My friend was unfamiliar with Asian cuisine so had a lot of questions, the bartender/order-taker seemed snide and impatient at times, even though we were the only patrons at the time. Shu Shop in Downtown Birmingham is really worth a try! Especially if you like Ramen. Although I'm on Keto I did taste a tiny piece of my husband's Ramen and it was so good. I ordered two of the small plates as my entree-- the scallops & the Brussel Sprouts-- and they were mouth watering. I also got two soft boiled eggs and it was a tasty addition. The cocktail I had was interesting but tasted like a mountain do without the fizz. It was made with Gin & eggs whites but I forget the name. The feng Shu was our favorite party. My wife and I just finished a late night event in Birmingham and our tummies were rumbling. A quick search on Yelp led us to Shu Shop. Who knew that in the heart of Birmingham Alabama you would find a cool hipster Asian restaurant. You almost get a night club vibe when you first walk inside. The lights are low and the music is playing but not so loud that you couldn't have a normal conversation. Once seated, I ordered a bunch of appetizers and my wife got the Ramen. My favorite was the sea scallops. Perfectly seared and loved the touch of green onions on top. The tempura nori threw me for a second but I kept going back for more. The hot ramen helped warm up my wife from the cold weather outside. If we're ever back in Bama then we would probably be back for more. Highly recommend. I, along with some friends, stopped by here last night after failing to break out of an escape room. We needed some good food and drinks to sooth our defeat. There is not a parking lot, but we were able to find street parking relatively easy. It was after 10:00 PM when we arrived so we had to show our IDs. We sat ourselves and ordered at the bar. Now, two things immediately stood out to me about this place--the decor and their playlist. Both were quite dope. I sang and danced along with most of the songs. I wanted to order Spicy Miso, but they were out. I settled on ordering their Hot and Sour Brussel Sprouts. They looked so nice coming out, but I wasn't crazy about the taste. Let me start off by saying the Spicy Miso Ramen is absolutely delicious and flavorful. I love spicy food and the broth had the perfect amount of spice too. I'm not a fan of the this octopus appetizer though. It's way too tangy and kind of bitter. But that won't stop me from returning I'll just try other options on the menu. My good friend and I went to Shu Shop for the first time last night. I was craving Ramen so bad and excited to try. WOW. The drinks were very good. We had a interesting time picking a cocktail as the ingredients aren't TYPICAL but ended up going with the Hibiscus Daquiri and it was 10/10. We had the crab claws and scallops for our small plates which were both AMAZING. Having grown up at the beach eating crab claws often, I would dare to say these were the best I've ever had. The Ramen broth is so good. The only thing I would say is the burnt ends were suggested to us as an add on but I didn't particularly like them as it was more of an actual BURNT taste rather than smoky. Shu shop has a really cute facility; it's pretty small. I've only been once and that was during non-peak hours (4p -5:30ish) so can't say whether it's "plenty of space" for their typical crowd. Anyhow, let's start.. Cons: They have zero parking. There is parking on the side of the building but we were told that it's rented out by a law office and they will tow your car. There is street parking but we ran into the issue of several meters not working. We ended up parking at one broken meter and one fixed meter... we were fine. My friend ordered the ramen for $13. While she said the ramen was good, $13 was a bit much for the bowl that she was given, in my opinion. All orders are taken at the bar. This is not necessarily a con... just a preference issue for me. Keep in mind the facility is small so it's not a big deal. Pros: The staff was laid-back and friendly! The facility was very very clean. I ordered pinot and it didn't taste right, I told the bartender and he immediately replaced it and it was good. My friend asked for a surprise drink and she loved what the bartender made for her! Great starters and small plates--we always get Ike Kara Age and the crispy nori. The only issue I have is that the Spicy miso ramen is so good that it's hard for me to bring myself to branch out to other parts of the menu (which isn't actually a problem at all). The dishes we ordered were small plates but the portion size was plentiful. They have the best crab claws in town! The short rib & rice was honestly so good. Once my friend and I sat down at empty seats at the bar and a server asked us to move because someone at a booth wanted to "switch between the booth and the bar"....what? Recently took a date here and when the bartender finally got around to acknowledging us he had this attitude as if we needed to hurry up and order because he was so busy.
