    Dozen on half shell

I've been meaning to get up here for years and finally got around to it. During our wonky COVID-19 era, things are naturally different and so the Saturday afternoon when I came had a sparsely occupied deck. Burgers weren't available but that didn't matter. I wouldn't order oysters at a place called "Side of Beef" so I wasn't going to have a hamburger here anyway - regardless of how could it might be! I ordered a dozen raw as well as a bowl of gumbo. Service was swift. The gumbo was fantastic (homemade). A dozen commands $18, and the gumbo was $9. Pretty steep $$ for the oysters when you look at comps (Shell, Bird's, etc) but you can't beat the atmosphere so chalk it up to that. This is a great spot next to the sunset landing boat ramp - I'm guessing plenty of boaters come after time on the lake. I'll be returning!

Shuckers Half-Shell Oyster Bar has amazing food and relaxing. They have outside & indoor seating. Very nice view of Lake Jackson.

Perfect little hole in wall with a great view. Great atmosphere. The oysters are always good. The food isn't anything special, but it's good. You mostly come here to enjoy a beer and some oysters while looking at Lake Jackson. They recently changed from being cash only and started taking cards.

Super friendly service! Great raw and steamed oysters on the half shell. Tuna steak with steamed veggies was phenomenal. Beautiful location.

Beautiful view of Lake Jackson from the outside patio of Shuckers.

Last Saturday (Jan. 14) was a beautiful day here in Tallahassee - sunny, blue skies, 75 degrees and we were in shorts in January. What better way to spend an afternoon than to take our first foray on the pretty, not-so-new Orchard Pond Parkway (and two canopy roads) to take in a gorgeous view of Lake Jackson and slurp plump Apalachicola oysters (a dozen raw and a dozen baked and topped with garlic-Parmesan), cherrystone clams, fried shrimp, gumbo and frosty-cold beer? It was our first time at Shuckers. And the first 30 minutes were heaven as we patiently awaited food and drank a few of the coldest beers anywhere. At 45 minutes, we begged for some saltines - anything - while mystified where our food could be. At 1 hour, we were getting angry, the bucolic charm of the scenery getting overcome by hunger. At 1.25 hours, I told our clueless server to cancel our order if it didn't arrive in 5 minutes. It arrived 3 minutes later - but 2 of the dishes were wrong (steamed shrimp instead of fried; steamed clams instead of raw; kept the clams, refused the shrimp) and we never got one word of apology, nor even so much as a beer on the house. (In fact, when we sent back the shrimp, we said to leave the accompanying fries - and they charged us for them. Idiots.) The oysters and beer were good. Everything else was mediocre - and a 1.25-hour wait for food is intolerable. You KNOW the gumbo was already made and simmering in a pot; they couldn't just ladle some of that into a bowl? They had to prepare our entire order and deliver everything at once? I've never heard of such utter incompetence. We kept begging and kept being told, "he's working on it ... it's coming." It didn't. I'm giving this place 2 stars. They actually earn 5 for the view, 4 for the beer, 3 for the food and -2 for the service. Giving them an average of 2 is being generous. I get it. This is a dive bar, it's not fine dining. But if they're serving food, they need to figure out how to get it out efficiently and timely - and how to treat customers. IF we ever go back, cold beer and raw oysters on the half shell are all we'll go for - and we'll not be so tolerant of another similar delay.

We found this place by accident, when I took a wrong turn which ultimately ended up being a very right turn. This place is down the end of a very residential street where you would never expect an oyster bar to be. When I turned around in the parking lot, the overall appearance of the place intrigued me. Shuckers has the look of either a very quirky awesome local place, or an abandoned bait shop. Either way I had to find out. Much to my surprise, Shuckers is a very cool local place. There was a crowd of people outside on the deck who were customers and yet greeted us like family. I felt like I could pull up a chair with the other guest and have a beer with friends. Once past the welcome committee, I found that the people who work there are just as friendly as the guests outside. We chose to sit outside on the screened in porch overlooking the lake. Although there isn't much lake left, it was still a nice view and it felt good to be outside. The menu is limited to mostly seafood and some barbeque. Considering I was doing much better than I expected, I decided we should try some of both and really sample what Shuckers had to offer. We ordered a dozen parmesan oysters, an order of smoked buffalo wings, 1/2 lb of steamed gulf shrimp, and the pulled pork sandwich. Before I tell you how excellent the food was, let me say that the beer was ice cold. Beautifully, wonderfully, blissfully cold beer. Even if the food was horrible I would have sat there content to enjoy the breeze, the friendly people, and the ice cold beer. Rather than describe each food item individually, let me suffice to say that everything was excellent... and I ate some of everything. Rock solid food and did I mention the beer was nice and cold? Clearly, this is not a fancy place to go for dinner or a place you can expect valet parking. If you are not run off by the outside appearance, you will find a pearl inside this oyster bar. Relaxed, local, fun -

Highly disappointed in the food but service and ambiance was wonderful, considering it has gotten recognition of late from the press
