We were looking for a place for lunch on a weekday and this place popped up in our search. The reviews (and frankly, the name) made us think this was some greasy spoon breakfast diner. Nothing can be further from the truth. We pulled up and immediately saw the amazing outdoor patio complete with couches. It was half-price pizza day so of course we went for that. It was so good. And they have quite the array of craft cocktails too. The service was extremely friendly and knowledgeable. Inside seating during peak times is obviously limited but they have a pretty good system of calling/texting when a table becomes available. Parking lot is decent. Bathroom is clean. I have been to Shy's twice now for brunch and I love it. My sister and brother-in-law have gone for dinner there as well and they say that's just as good but this review will focus on my experiences specifically. The restaurant is a pleasant experience from the moment you walk in the door. The staff is so warm and friendly. They seat you in one of the many themed rooms that act as an archive of history in various fields which adds intrigue. Plus all the decor is from the owner's father's personal collection of stuff which adds to the warmth of the place. Each room only has a few tables so people aren't crowded in. It's almost like having private dining without having to ask for it which is significantly preferred to having to slide into a booth right next to another dining party. The menu isn't huge and doesn't have some breakfast menu staples such as pancakes or waffles, but what they do have is delicious and not your run of the mill options. Personally I love eggs Benedict but don't like peameal bacon so their many unique Benedict options really stand out to me as appealing. Plus, you can go with one of the hashes and get your eggs and hollandaise on a bed of deliciousness. The avocado smash hash in particular is a standout to me. A great way to get your Benedict craving fulfilled while also getting some vegetables...tasty, tasty vegetables. Even if you aren't a Benedict fan, I've snagged some of their French toast from my brother in law and that's also a delicious option. We went on pizza special night. Pizza was very good but we would never pay full price for it. Pinot Wine was also 1/2 price. The place tries to market as upscale but it's just a small pub with expensive food. We would only go if they featured specials. I had called for reservations and they made it sound like we were lucky to get a table but upon arrival we soon found out the restaurant was empty. Unfortunately, even with one other table the sound carries so much that it felt like we were listening to each other's conversation. I can't imagine how noisy it would be with more people. read more

Called me 1-1/2 hours before our 4:30 p.m. reservation for today, Sunday, July 31st, to say they would not be ready for dinner until 6:00 p.m. Mom and I had left home already, to stop at the Tiny Shop Bakery on the same highway for some pie and other baked goods, and then were going to stop next at the Farmer To You market, 400 metres down the road for some fresh produce. We had already travelled over 30 kilometres and 25 minutes driving by car from Brantford, and were literally 7 minutes and approximately 8 more kilometres away by car! NOT IMPRESSED. First time I've experienced a restaurant cancelling on me, never mind on the day of. Left me to scramble to find somwhere else to take mom to celebrate her 89th birthday, where I could find a reservation and outdoor patio. Had the nerve to then send an email cancelling the reservation and asking me if I'd like to book a new time? I already said 6:00 p.m. is too late for dinner for a senior. Re-book for a birthday that was today? Really? Unbelievable. Interestingly enough, I sent an email response when I got home to their email advice about not being ready for dinner until 6:00 p.m. (phone and email contact from them) about what I think of how they conduct "their business". It comes back noting their reservation team is unavailable, and: ***We are closed SATURDAY JULY 30th all day for a wedding, reopening for dinner service @ 4pm on Sunday July 31st.*** read more

What a wonderful way to celebrate my friend's special birthday. From making a reservation, to walking through the doors, and getting seated, the experience was fantastic from beginning to end. The atmosphere and decor was lovely, making it the perfect place to meet up with a friend. The staff were very friendly and our server, Dan was great. On their website they have that you should email to pre-order take out. I did this on a Friday to pre-order for a Saturday night. I received an email response that I should call around 5:00 pm same day to order for a 5:45 pm pick-up. When I called at 4:45 pm to order for 5:45 pm I was then advised that they were not taking any take out orders because of the number of reservations they had. I have an immunocompromised child and we are still under strict isolation to protect him from covid-19. Over the past 18 months we have ordered food at least once a week to help support the restaurant industry during the lock-down in Ontario. We have ordered from Shy's Place. Tonight Shy's Place showed what they truly think of their customers. They could have said yesterday in response to my email that they were not taking any take-out orders because they would be too busy with reservations, but that is not what they did. It was the second weekend that restaurants in Ontario have been able to open their patios, they would have known what their reservations were likely to be when they received my email. Instead they showed a complete lack of consideration, and ruined a special occasion for my family. The food may be good but I will never go there or order take out again. That they failed to show any consideration for people that continue to have to isolate while restrictions lift is disgusting. Character matters and they have shown that they have none. read more

My husband and I were passing by on our way through at 4:30pm on a Sunday. the reviews looked good, so we decided to stop for dinner. The parking lot was empty. When we went to the front desk, 3 waitresses were standing there. There were no patrons in the dining room or on the bar side. She advised they were short staffed and too busy and we're not taking any tables tonight. The entire restaurant we're empty and 3 waitresses were standing doing nothing. I would not recommend this restaurant! Their service and polices are appalling! I made a reservation for 3 adults and 4 children on Sunday for Mother's Day. In the meantime, we had a family emergency, and I completely forgot about the reservation with everything going. The restaurant phoned me at our reservation time, and I apologized that I forgot to let them know we could not go. The girl who called me said they would have to charge me $40 per person - $280!! I explained in detail my situation and she said she would call the manager and call me back. She called back and said they decided they were going to charge me! I was so shocked! I asked to speak with the manager and the girl said no I could not as they would not be in until Tuesday (2 days later). I cannot believe this policy I have never heard of a restaurant doing this. When I made the reservation, I did so over the phone as it was more than 6 ppl, and NO ONE TOLD ME that I would be charged if a no show. On top of that the amount they charge per person is WAY MORE THAN I WOULD HAVE SPENT...the children would not be drinking alcohol. I know I sound upset about the money, but it is more than that. It is now a week later, and the manager never did reach out to me!! This awful policy and no one telling me about it and then the lack of compassion is just all disgusting! Completely horrible treatment . We are regulars who came for a nice meal after having a great lunch the day before. Waited for a hour with barely any service or apologies for the wait. When the food finally came it was completely different from the day before (having reordered what we had found initially good) and undercooked, oversalted, and just overall not edible. When asking for assistance, all of the wait staff avoided my mother and hid in the kitchen. When we were finally able to speak to the manager Abbi, he was extremely disrespectful to my mother and told her that she was being dishonest about the wait service and was completely unresponsive to the just criticism given. He offered dessert, which we were no longer wanting to have after such a wait and hassle, and when he finally offered to comp the bill he told us to wait a moment...and brought out a bill!
