It's not so much a cottage as it is a...restaurant. we'll seasoned, very tasty food. Highly recommended.

This used to be our go-to Chinese restaurant whenever we're in town; however, sometime during the Pandemic the ownership changed. We took out a few dishes from the new ownership and were utterly disgusted with the quality. It's been a few more years. I am not sure if ownership changed again, but we decided to give it another chance. I didn't recognize the owner - not sure if it was because of the absence of mask. But first impression was she didn't care to be cordial or friendly, just doing the basic part as a wait staff. On the plus side, the chairs and tables have been upgraded from what I could remember. We ordered our usual dishes in order to gauge the current quality. 2 staple Sichuan dishes: Kung Pao Chicken ($14.95) and Shredded Beef with Hot Green Pepper ($17.95). We also added a noodle dish: Sauteed Noodle with Pork & Scallion ($11.95). Kung Pao Chicken was rendered differently - sweeter and not as dark but tasty none the less. The Shredded Beef was also slightly different, thicker and obviously tenderized with baking soda. It was good enough. The sauteed noodle was good but it's a generic dish so no authenticity to consider. A number of deviations from prior experience. The chicken and beef dishes each only 1 bowl of rice, instead of a big serving bowl for the table. We had to ask for one additional bowl of rice. Not sure if it was missed but we didn't get charged for it. The tea wasn't complimentary any more. $1.50 for the pot. Overall, we weren't disappointed because we came in with low expectation. We will be back again hoping to see that they can at least maintain the same consistency. read more

We decided to come here one day after work. There were a couple of tables occupied but it's mostly takeout. The restaurant is medium in size, with bright orange walls, framed art pieces adorning them, and booths lined up against them. Tables seating up to 4 people sit in a row in the middle as well. We were seated at a booth. We ordered the following: #717 - rice cake Shanghai style. This was the best item in my opinion. The rice cake was nice and chewy. #925 -braised whole fish with hot sichuan bean sauce. We were told that this will take 25 minutes to cook. Hubs liked it a lot. I thought it was ok but I felt that the fish was hard. #933 - short rib and bitter melon in black bean sauce. This was disappointing because the bitter melon was hard and barely cooked. There were only a couple pieces of the melon. It's also not short ribs and hubs was disappointed about that. It was actually spare ribs. They also put sweet potato noodles underneath the casserole to make it look like the entree was bountiful. Guess they're trying to save money. #S12 - Thai style hot and spicy basil chicken and shrimp. This was daughter's favorite dish. She thought the shrimp was nice and soft and the chicken was nicely cooked. There were lots of fruit flies and they were getting annoying because they were hanging by our table the entire night. Daughter figured out that they were attracted to the decorative carrots because it was marinated in vinegar. We moved it out of our way and it was ok after that, but we didn't realize it until we were midway through our dinner. The fruit flies were hanging on the wall by our booth. This is one of the reasons I don't like to sit at a booth. Flies and fruit flies are attracted to booths and don't move away. Note to self, do not sit in a booth if there are tables in the middle of the restaurant. We came here almost 10 years ago and liked it a lot. I've been wanting to come back here for a while. I was pretty disappointed this time. Don't think we'll be returning. read more

Based on the reviews here I dived into the three pepper chicken with brown rice on the lunch special. Although I asked them to tone down the spice, it proved to be just as good as everyone here says it is. A little tongue burn never hurt anyone but the burn didn't linger. Nice staff and quick service. The wonton soup was above average and the brown rice was flavorful. They had a few items on the menu which looked more adventurous than your standard Chinese restaurant which you may want to explore. The restaurant was clean and comfortable--the decor was what you'd typically find in a mid-range Chinese restaurant. Nothing fancy. And I even got a good fortune! read more

Came here during Christmas ! Seating was very quick and service was fast. We ordered scallion pancakes and steamed vegetable dumplings - the dumpling sauce and chili oil added a lot flavor. For main course we ordered Dan Dan noodles (vegetarian), tofu and vegetables in thai basil sauce, chicken in spicy garlic sauce and shrimp in schezuan sauce. Dan Dan noodles were decent - we appreciated the bean paste as a replacement for the pork. Husband said the chicken dish was fantastic, and the shrimp dish was great also but said the shrimp had a little too much breading to it. The veggie dish needed more flavor. Sorry but I just wasted 40 bucks on food i had to put in my backyard for a raccoon to eat. Lemon chicken- so over cooked it was hard and dried out, inedible. Plus they chop.it up and cram it into a little round container. Just awful, do t ever order it here. Sweet and sour chicken- ugh I used to really like it here but now it's overcooked and hard little chicken pieces, again out for the raccoon. Singapore noodles was decent, not the best but compared to the other two at least it wasn't rock hard and dried out. While waiting for my order I couldn't understand why there was an entire situation down restaurant with zero people eating there. Besides them having chosen the absolute worst color ceiling light bulbs(that awful white color like they have in an office building or operating room) Makes sense now. 1 star for the rude lady who took my order(she gets one star for reminding me of the dude where's my car lady, and then...... So anyway don't waste your money here, at least not on any type of fried chicken. Way better food caddy corner across the street at the big Chinese restaurant. Nothing worse than ordering take out, wasting 40 bucks and having to throw it outside.. at least my raccoon had something to gnaw on although he chose to leave a lot of it there read more

The casual restaurant itself was okay. The decor was okay. The food itself was good but not exceptional. They offer two different lunch menus: one in Chinese and one in English. The English menu is strictly for those who like to play it on the safe side. I personally prefer Chinese menu. They have better selections. From the Chinese menu, we had ordered two vegetarian dishes: fish fillet with Chinese eggplants and fish fillets with tofu. We also had hot and sour soup and wonton soup. My h&s soup had some nice heat to it and hubby enjoyed his wonton soup. Soon afterwards our entrees came out with the bowls of brown rice. You get a choice of either brown rice or white rice. The fish was velvety smooth in both dishes. I personally favored the fish fillet with the Chinese eggplant. It had more complex taste. However, both dishes had too much cornstarch added to thicken up the gravy. It became gelatinous and unpleasant to eat. This is a constructive criticism and not to be taken as I abhor the dishes. The service was fine. They took our order, gave it to us, and then they gave us our checks. They never offered us water and upon seating us they immediately gave us crispy noodles. We asked for them to switch the noodles for shredded radishes and carrots. They never added us if everything was okay but did they check in us to see if there was anything else we might need, such as cups for our tea. Had to ask when they set one of the dishes down. Would I go back? I would prefer to try other Chinese restaurants. read more

The food was really delicious. I got the 3 pepper chicken lunch. It seems like the same thing as Chongqing chicken. It's deep fried pieces of chicken (with some fat on) and it's really crispy. They stir fry it with 3 different kinds of peppers. It was just the right amount of spicy for me. It was spicy but didn't seem so spicy once you keep eating it. It was so savory and you could taste all the different aromatics they put in the stir fry. I could really taste the ginger. The white rice was even good and the egg drop soup had a nice flavor. I wish my review wouldn't be negative, I feel bad for people but not this time. Most of the food that came had zero flavor and I think I literally could taste the MSG. Everything was doused in oil and sauces, and we threw out at least 60% of it. Normally people keep leftovers, that's why we ordered so much. One of the best Chinese places around. Food is delicious, service is amazing and servings are just the right size not to feel sick after. Another great restaurant for authentic Sichuan food. However, if you have a party of 6+ be sure to make a reservation because they only have one big table. The place is pretty cramped due to them trying to add as many tables as possible. The food has good flavor but I wish the menu had more solo vegetable dishes. Found this place through yelp since I was craving some spicy asian food. I ordered pick up and there is not much to this place. It is in a quiet strip mall and the interior is simple. There are no more than 10 tables in the place. I liked the feel of it. The dumplings were a little gummy and not the best. Too much dumpling and not enough filling. The three pepper chicken was very good. It has this tongue numbing heat but great flavor. This was my first time eating something like this and I really enjoyed it. The general tso's chicken was pretty good too. The chicken had a crunchy texture and a tender center. I know this is probably the most ordered dish on any asian menu but i love it especially when its made well. If you have a sensitive stomach just put a toilet paper in the freezer and enjoy. I had a suspicion that something changed, maybe new ownership, because the online ordering changed and there still seemed to be so many good reviews. Last night I ordered hot and sour soup, shrimp dumplings, some spicy stir fry and mango chicken. Each dish was worse than the next. Didn't taste fresh. Dumplings were microscopic and reminded me of the frozen ones I got from Baldor delivery. Chicken was tasteless. As a resident of Marlboro, Sichuan Cottage is one of my favorite Chinese restaurants in the area. 宮保雞丁 (Kung Pao Chicken) － It's decent, wouldn't say amazing but it is a staple. 4/5 糖醋魚片 (Sweet and Sour Fish Fillets (?)) － My favorite dish here. The sauce is a bit odd on it's own but with the fish it's perfect. 5/5 地三鲜 (Potato and Eggplant (?)) － It's not on the menu but I think if you ask for it they'll make it! I had it once and it's really good. 5/5 Come for the lunch special because they give more food than they should; there's usually not enough rice which is pretty uncommon (usually you'll get more rice than food). read more

Sichuan Cottage has been our go-to Chinese restaurant in the area even though it's actually 25 minutes away. Was always a solid restaurant and we never got a bad meal from them until the new owners. We always gravitated toward the authentic Szechuan menu and always enjoyed it until now. The Kung Pao chicken was always blistering hot, delicious and authentic but last time we ordered it it was none of the above. They used the same sauce that they use on the General Tso's chicken and boy was I disappointed. Needless to say that's not kung pao chicken or at least not real kung pao chicken. It's a shame because now I don't have an acceptable Chinese restaurant in the area and we'll have to travel even further if I want some decent Szechuan food. read more

I have been a customer of Sichuan Cottage for years and really enjoyed the food. Two weeks ago, I opted to order a lunch special of steamed chicken and vegetables. An hour later I became violently sick from food poisoning that landed me in the hospital for 8 days. I can only attribute my illness to unsafe food practices. Please do not go here any longer. We have got takeout here a couple times and it's always been delicious and hot even when we travelled back home with it. This is a true hidden gem. It is located in a pretty random strip mall that also houses Marlboro's post office. Their name on the sign out front just says "Chinese Cuisine" and doesn't even match the one above their storefront, which actually says "Sichuan Cottage". It looks dingy from the outside, but it is super clean, well-lit, and tastefully decorated once you step inside. The staff is really friendly here. In my experience, it's been either completely packed or completely empty when I've visited. All of their food is great, but I like to get Sichuan/Szechuan specific dishes when I'm here that are hard to get in most generic Chinese restaurants. I like their boiled beef in spicy oil (I think that's what it's called - shui zu niou). It's got the perfect combination of tender beef slices, savoryness, and szechuan ma la. If you don't know what ma la is, it's a uniquely szechuan pepper that makes your mouth tingle and go numb which is different from normal spiciness that burns. It comes in a big bowl of oily soup with bean sprouts and other veggies and spices. Just scoop out and eat the meat and vegetables. read more
