Great music choices. The gentleman who took my order (maybe the owner too I'm not sure) was very nice and attentive. He gave me the run down on the menu and checked on me often. Pulled up to find the place slightly packed for a Wed. evening - definitely a good sign. I initially had my heart set on demolishing a shrimp basket, but they were out. Tragic. Ended up with the whole chicken wings and green beans (yes, I paid the extra $2 to skip the fries, because apparently that's who I am now). Took one bite of the cornbread that came with the meal before I even pulled off and instantly knew I'd made the right choice. The green beans? Seasoned like somebody's grandmama was back there. I was in the area at an event at the convention center and decided to give Side Chic a try. It's a family owned and run black business. Upon arrival we were greeted immediately and seated after a few mins. The place is spacious and well lit. The wife/mom and daughter were bussing tables and the mom said their daughter is the side chic. She was so cute maybe 4 or 5 years old and already helping with the family business. The wife shared that her daughter was the inspiration for the logo and her husband was the one who drew the logo. Our server (I think her name was Taylor) came over and took our order. I went with the peach lemonade, shrimp and fries basket and 6 piece honey garlic wings. Everything is made fresh to order so it did take some time to come out. We wanted the wings as an appetizer but it came out after our entrees. The husband/father who introduced himself as Lou was one of the staff to drop off food to our table. He was very polite and even shared his plans about updating the logo when we asked about his process with drawing it. The food was super delicious. My eyes were bigger than my belly cause I ordered more than I could eat. Everything was seasoned well and fried to perfection. The leftovers heated nicely the next day. Lu and his wife were super sweet! My friend and I visited on the 4th of July with the intention of getting wings and a few other things, but they were sold out of the wings! I was so sad, because the wings looked sooo good on social media but we decided to get a chicken sandwich, shrimp, fish, and a variety of sides. Everything was seasoned very well and is made cook to order so it's fresh! Our food took about 20 minutes after ordering. My friend and I sat and watched tv near one of the screens they had. The portion sizes were pretty good; the catfish is HUGEEEEE. We really enjoyed everything we had. My friend especially enjoyed the potato salad. I'm a little sad they ran out of chicken, but I understand that it was a holiday. We were actually one of the last customers of the day because they had sold out of everything after us. I visited Side Chic for the first time on a late Friday afternoon. The restaurant was completely empty although I did see a woman stop in to pick up her phone order. The gentleman at the register was very helpful and polite. I ordered 4 chicken tenders and 6 wings along with Carla's sauce and honey garlic sauce on the side. I was informed that their wings are fresh and made to order, so it would take about 15 minutes to prepare. He recommended that I call in next time to avoid the wait, but I wasn't in a hurry and didn't mind. I posted up and watched some TV (they have four flat screens hanging). My wait time was a little over 20 minutes. I typically check my takeout before leaving the restaurant (or my parking space), but it's not a perfect record. That day, I wish I had. The chicken tenders were great. Nicely seasoned, a bit crispy, perfectly sized. The wing dings had potential and were even more seasoned than the tenders; however, 5 out of 6 of them wanted to fly away. As you can see in my photos, the wings were not properly cleaned as they still had visible feathers in the skin. And, one of my sauces was missing. The wings and tenders were packaged in the same container which wasn't a huge deal since they were all for me, but just be aware of this in case you're buying food for multiple people. I called the restaurant to attempt to resolve the feather issue, but I was told by the gentleman who assisted me earlier that he would need to have his manager call me back. I visited the restaurant on Friday, April 19th, but as of the time of this review, I have not received a call back. Unfortunately, I won't be returning. I wanted to continue to patronize this business because the food does actually taste great, but the feathery wings in addition to the failure to return my call just doesn't cut it for me. read more

I have three wings with green beans and added potato salad. Daughter had wings with fries. Everything was great, chicken dropped fresh so a few minute wait but soooo worth it! Finally came here after passing by for a couple months now, since I moved into the area I've been super curious to stop in. I love the name and the location is literally walking distance from my place! I will say I met the owner who was super nice and the vibe was very friendly, I felt like I was hanging out with people I grew up with very personable and even had a regular stop in and we just all enjoyed casual conversation. I ordered to go so I enjoyed a nice cold beer while I waited, they have a really nice beer selection. Now for the food, I got fried chicken wings, with side of Mac n cheese, and it came with a muffin. The chicken wings weren't that bad, but for it to be a chicken place I thought it would be a little less basic, and it was a little too bready for me, and not as seasoned as I would've preferred. I'm sorry to say this but the Mac n cheese was not good at all, I actually had to throw it away I couldn't finish it. The noodles and cheese were hard and greasy. It's almost like they scraped the bottom of the barrel and gave it to me to eat. I mean the amount of oil was enough to cause heart palpitations, I really want to believe maybe I got a bad batch, because at first they said the Mac n cheese was all gone, and then came back and said they actually did have some, so maybe it really was scraped from the bottom of the barrel lol! Very excited to try this restaurant. Service here is top notch. I'm convinced Virginians are just pleasant people to be around. Our server was very polite and friendly. We got lemon pepper wings, honey garlic wings, Cajun fries, and a side of Mac and cheese... fries aren't really my thing but they were ok. Now on to the wings, very meaty, fresh, well seasoned all the way to the bone. Definitely on my list of best wings in Richmond. The Mac and cheese was really good, different from what I'm use to but good nonetheless. They also have beer you can purchase as well as fountain drinks so I got some Stella Artois and come sweat tea and lemonade. The lemonade was too sweet for me but the sweat tea was just fine, and homemade and freshly brewed, I enjoyed that. Went to Side Chic on a short stay. Small space, but they're pushing out some amazing wings. Get the lemon pepper (wet), and they were great. Everything is cooked fresh so we did have to wait only about minutes, which was fine because the food came out hot. The best part of the experience were the staff. They were very patient, and explained everything on the menu. My only critique would be little feathers still being left on the wings. As someone who dines out regularly and takes pride in supporting Black-owned businesses, I came in expecting soul, community, and comfort on a plate. What I got instead was confusion, dysfunction, and a vivid reminder that not everything with a hype train deserves to be boarded. I've had bad meals before, but this? This felt like a dare. And frankly, I'm still questioning how this place is legally up and running. Let's talk food. The wings were so salty they could've been used to de-ice roads. The shrimp had a fishy aftertaste that screamed I should've been tossed yesterday. The mac and cheese? Dry enough to start a brush fire. And the color? Everything was aggressively red. Chicken, shrimp all dunked in Sazón like it was the house marinade. Newsflash. Sazón is not a personality. It's a seasoning. When we asked for tartar sauce, we were handed cocktail sauce, then mayonnaise, with a casual "we're low on tartar." Since when is mayo a backup plan for seafood? Oh, and the whiting? "We're out." Which sounds like their permanent status, honestly.Even the menu couldn't get it right. They spelled yams as "yums." That typo told me everything I needed to know. We weren't in a restaurant. We were in someone's delusional side hustle, and it shows. But the food was just the first layer. When I politely expressed to the bartender, a light-skinned gentleman with the kind of attitude that should never come with a service role, that I didn't like the wings, his immediate response was I never go anywhere and not pay for something I eat. Sir, I took one bite. That's how dining works. In a real establishment, feedback is welcomed, adjustments are made, and guests are respected. Instead, he escalated the situation, raised his voice, and shouted for someone to call the police. Police. Over chicken. As if that weren't enough, we paid in full and attempted to leave, only to be followed outside by the owner and her staff like it was a schoolyard fight about to break out. At one point, the owner shouted My daughter's coming out to fight you. Ma'am. What? Is this an eatery or a neighborhood beef in uniform? The establishment is unprofessional, untrained, and unfit to be serving the public. They were serving alcohol without asking for IDs, a liability waiting to happen. Condiments were improvised. Threats were personalized. Hospitality was nonexistent. You can tell this place isn't led by a professional. Not in the kitchen. Not behind the bar. And certainly not in ownership. And to be honest, Side Chick is the most unintentionally accurate name I've seen. Because that's exactly what the energy was giving. Scattered, sloppy, and reactive. The behavior was too fluid, too familiar, meaning this wasn't their first time treating a customer like this. Watching the staff and owner crowd up like it was a block party gone left? Wild. I'm a food critic. I've reviewed five-star fine dining and hole-in-the-wall gems. I support Black businesses with pride. But this right here? This was a lesson in what happens when ego runs a restaurant and accountability never clocked in. And these glowing five-star reviews? Probably written by relatives, regulars, or folks who've never eaten anywhere with standards. Because if people were being honest? This place doesn't just lack flavor. Okay seriously I'm 62 years old and I've had a lot of chicken sandwiches because it is one of my favorites. This place does something magic to chicken. The bun was good the chicken was awesome The honey butter was great. And I just had the standard classic sandwich. I shudder to think what some of the more deluxe sandwiches would be like. And to top it off are you kidding me steak fries with a great Cajun seasoning. This small hole in the wall place is like a little brick basement with so much atmosphere you actually want to stay. First and foremost, the food is pretty dang good in the world of fried food. My chicken tenders were fried to a beautiful color which indicated they were seasoned properly, and the breading was a perfect layer which was super crispy but not to thick. The flavor was on point and these were some of the JUICIEST chicken tenders I've had. The fries could use a little work as most were super short and could've had a little bit better texture, however, that Cajun seasoning make them worth it. The service was friendly and pretty quick. Only real critique on my part is the interior atmosphere could use a face lift, but if that's all I could critique then I'd say they got something good going on here!
