Dylan was an AMAZING guide that knew not only an encyclopedia-like amount of knowledge on the history of Portland, but also could recite extensive history on each place we ate and the specifics of the food we were enjoying. Everything was delicious and we've already been back to one of the restaurants! The afternoon helped us all to understand the layout of Portland while not exhausting. Perfect amount of eating and walking and WOW did we learn. I started writing things down because I was afraid I'd forget things after we were done and I truly wanted to remember it all! We just moved from Denver a few years ago so always looking for good eats! We decided to check out a neighborhood that we've never explored ourselves and we had such a great time. We took the Mississippi Ave Tour and really enjoyed the different eats that was picked out for us! We started at the food carts and had some delicious BBQ then walked a couple blocks and got to try this delicious glass noodle salad and local wine. Honestly, I was pretty full already from those first two stops but we had two more to go! We ended up going to a local brewery as well as a dairy-free ice cream shop! Being lactose intolerant, I was ECSTATIC to know that this ice cream place was all dairy free! Everyone was pleasantly surprised at the texture of the ice cream and the different flavors that was offered! Being locals we weren't sure what to expect in a group setting but everyone was a joy to be with. Our group consisted of friends celebrating a birthday and a married couple that was visiting for the weekend from Seattle. Our guide Heidi lead us on a delicious trip around Portland and cannot wait to attend her other tours or even possibly her food tours abroad! These traits are not what made her an apt, knowledgeable, or personable tour guide, per say, but they're what made me see my reflection in her mirror. "Hey! I'm an artist (writer) from New Mexico and a food tour guide, too!" With that said, Ariel did an awesome job. She knows her history, her food, her city, and has a fun personality to tie it all together. Our group was a mix of locals and travelers, solo eaters (yours truly) and a group of friends. We all got along great, and enjoyed every stop. What I enjoyed most about this was 1) the location. Mississippi Ave is a gem! Get out of downtown and explore this place! 2) the diversity of dining. I'm not well-versed enough in Korean Mexican food to know what to order at a food cart, same with Thai cuisine (um, Pad Thai? Yes I am that uneducated), so I was glad to have a great dish handed to me. Also, I liked the balance of savory, sweet, and even vegetables, and the fact it moved like a progressive meal (salad, appetizer, main, palate cleanser, dessert). I definitely recommend!

Not true with this company. Herb S. really knew his stuff - both about the food, the food carts, and Portland. He was entertaining and easy going and made the time fly by. All of the food carts selected were wonderful. We had everything from Poutine to tacos to Ukranian dumplings - great portion sizes and everything was flavorful and unique. We liked two of the carts so much we went back twice during the weekend! Don't hesitate on this one - just book it!

We'd actually been to a different food tour with him several years ago, so it was great to reconnect at this new company - he was a delight then, and he's still a delight now! Herb is very personable and had tons of knowledge about the Portland food scene and city history, lots of fun stories, and a clearly warm, tight-knit connection with all the vendors on the trip. The carts we visited were varied in their cuisine and all incredible. The trip went so smoothly with all the little timing elements well-managed, and it was so fun to get to know the Eastside. The tour was an easy 3-hour walk, and even though we came during a heat wave, Herb stuck to the shady areas so it was as pleasant as could be. Also, our group's allergy concerns were graciously met - there was usually a replacement item rather than just having to skip the tasting at that location. I would strongly recommend Lost Plate to any tourist wanting to explore the cuisine of Portland - it was a highlight of our vacation for sure! Tour guide Ali (also the owner!) is passionate about sustainable agriculture of all kinds - other tours go to farms and dairies. This one is all about seafood - we learned to filet a fish, how to hold a live crab safely, how to go crabbing from a dock, and how to shuck an oyster. There was plenty to eat! I didn't need dinner when lunch happened at all 3 stops - a starter of chowder at stop one, cheese platter and a whole crab at stop two, and raw oysters at stop three. Also - Oregon wine & beer. Super interesting info about fisheries, the local fishing culture, and agricultural stuff - definitely expanded my understanding of Oregon & the coast.

We visited Latourell Falls, Shepperd's Dell, and Wahkeena Falls before ending at the iconic Multnomah Falls. Angela was incredibly knowledgeable and kept the tour interesting with all kinds of facts about the Gorge and the surrounding area. She even pointed out fresh blackberries along the way and showed us some banana slugs which, naturally, I was delighted by. I really appreciated that the tour wasn't just "look, waterfall!" Angela kept sharing little facts and observations that made the whole experience more interesting and gave us a better appreciation for what we were seeing. A beautiful way to explore the Gorge without having to figure out all the logistics yourself.

If…read moreyou're planning a trip to Portland (OR), I highly recommend doing the tour at the start of your trip--not the end--because now I have to come back just to follow up on other "tidbits and records " she shared on the history of Portland's parks and recreation scenes. The tour kicks off by meeting up at a red building--easiest to find if you're walking just outside the perimeter. Look for a small black signage on the door. The owner usually leaves the door unlocked in the morning hours so look for benches set up for you to seat and wait for your group. Susan, our guide, is a Portland native who left for college and returned back to Portland. She gave us some great bonus insights beyond the standard tour -- like history of the places, including local tycoons, how roads were funded and how each section of the districts were divided. More importantly , she suggested a ghost tour and highly recommend to try biking around town--definitely on my list for next time!
