Our little dog Ollie has been a patient of Dr. Peggy's veterinary office for the past 4 years. Ollie gets the greatest of care, and my husband and I are always reassured that they understand how important he is to us. This past winter Ollie could barely walk. We thought for sure he would need a surgery, bills would be outrageous.. we tried everything before we even went to get help. Dr. Peggy immediately knew what to do. It wasn't hundreds of dollars on X-rays, just to see... she uses herbs coupled with medicines and tries what she is pretty sure will work, before she makes your pet uncomfortable and your wallet empty. I lived in Colfax for 15 yrs and Dr Peggy was my vet! She took great care of my animals and they loved her! I have been to her home and seen her animals both cats and dogs . The thing that impressed me the most is that while housing and caring for many, many cats you could not detect any odor from litter boxes! I have 4 indoor cats and have trouble keeping odors under control. After I moved to PA I decided I missed having cats (at the time I had none) and wanted a Scottish Fold so odors course she was my 1st choice. And my Sushi is wonderful! I got all of her medical records and shot records. My vet in PA was impressed with what I was given. As a former dog breeder I was also impressed both with all she did for Sushi prior to getting her and the contract she had me sign. Beware!! Dr. Peggy has no conscience. How can she be practicing as a Veterinarian, what happened to the Hippocratic Oath? She has no professional ethical standards. This so called Veterinarian who is also a breeder of cats and dogs, had her 108 Scottish Folds Cats taken away by the Humane Society and the FieldHaven Animal Support Team in February 2025. They called her a Hoarder. The cats were in Deplorable Condition and everyone needed some form of medical treatment. I did know she had no scruples. I have purchased cats from her in the past. The last time was 2024. I purchased 2 brothers, she never did an exam and 1 has a Heart defect. I wasn't informed, didn't know until my Vet and Cardiologist told me. Dr Peggy was rude and insensitive when our dog was very sick. First of all she put him on this very intensive medical treatment that seemed like had promising results. A week later he was very sick and clearly dying so we went back to the vet, When his lab work came back she just yelled from across the office that our dogs kidneys were failing and he was going to die. When she finally made it over to us, we were crying and devastated, she proceeded to tell us we needed to put him down right at that moment. I was in shock and when I asked about having someone come to our house to put him down, she said people don't do that and that we need to put him down in the office. Finally we were shuffled into a room, I told her I was going to look up other options and she made a snarky remark and then left the room. Shortly after a nurse came in to have us sign the papers to put down our dog. I told the nurse I was looking into other options that would come to our house, she was very nice and gave us some contacts of vets who would do that, even though De Peggy said the only option was to do it in office. We left and the nurse staff said they would send us a bill, which we never received anything in the mail. I thought it was strange but I thought that maybe she felt bad for being such a jerk... but no... a year later almost to the date I received a letter saying that we were sent to collections! It was salt in the wound of a terrible experience. I would NEVER recommend anyone go here or support this cruel woman. read more

I took two of my beloved dogs to Dr. Peggy for the first time, and had a terrific experience. Her practice was the only holistic one in the area accepting new patients, and was referred to me by another holistic vet. I was able to get an appointment within two weeks of my initial call. The staff was welcoming and friendly. Betsy (I think!) was particularly sweet in the way she engaged with my dogs. My appointment for my two dogs lasted over two hours. I so appreciated Dr. Peggy really taking her time to get a full picture of my dogs' medical history, especially one of which who has a rare autoimmune disorder. During our visit, she looked through various books to find the best solution for my dog with the autoimmune disorder. I didn't feel rushed in any way, and she answered all of my questions thoroughly. I also loved that they were willing to draw my dogs' blood in front of me, as I've had some bad experiences with that in the past. I was so excited to come here, I was searching for a local vet that was holistic and natural minded, I called to establish care and to get my almost 5 month pup checked out to see if she was developing a UTI after attempting to treat her symptoms with western herbs at home. There was no disclosure of their policies, the mandates are lifted & being over 2 years into COVID, my husband is unable to wear a mask, so we don't go to any business that requires us to wear one, well.... she was scared of him (he's healthy she's fully vaxxed) and that's where our bad experience started. I was told over the phone what my approximate cost would be and what to expect, and what it was they were going to do..... well, To attempt to make a long story short- we got there we were told that they "couldn't do the test" (they ended up being able to) test her for what the concerns were. The vet was not nice nor was she accommodating( her business her rules) but NO disclosure and we were treated poorly by the vet specifically once we got there. During operating hours, We called Sierra Animal Wellness Center on Friday 5/7 (left message), called again on Sunday 5/9 (left message) and again on Monday 5/10 (left a THIRD message). When I called to make an appointment to spay our 1 year old dog. They said nothing over the phone about having to wear a mask prior to entering the building. For we do not wear them and would have gone with a different vet. For the mandates have been over for some time now. They wasted our time, over an hour. $700 for this woman to tell me my cat has asthma. She talked me into bloodwork which cost $220 but said I would get 20% off my cats dental as long as it was done in the next 30 days. Then when I'm told my cat has asthma and has to be on prednisone for a month she said a dental can't be done. Oh yeah and my cat took the prednisone and is still wheezing so obviously asthma isn't the only cause. She also told me his white blood cell count was high(NOT SHOCKING) and he has a heart murmur but can't tell me jack about what type of heart murmur or what stage it is. The X-rays she took she couldn't read at all. Radiologist had to read them. The x-rays cost a fortune! In my opinion she doesn't have a clue. This woman is out for MONEY! I absolutely love Dr. Peggy and her equally fantastic and caring staff. We brought our "pushing" 12 year old yellow Labrador to her in hopes of finding a treatment for her aging hips. After examining her, Dr. Peggy found that the source of her pain and stiffness was due to inflammation in her back with many tender areas along her spine. Dr. Peggy recommended laser treatments, "aqua-puncture" (acupuncture with Vitamin B12 aqueous solution) and Chinese herbal compounds. Unbelievable! Within 2 weeks of initiating treatment we noticed an increase in our dog's flexibility and energy level. She is a much happier pooch! Dr. Peggy has restored our dog's quality of life. I was referred to this place by a dear friend. So naturally I took her advice. Well lucky she is a friend because I would of really given her a what for in telling me how great this place is. If your lucky enough to have her current pet of choice you will be seen and taken care of. If not you better double check your times and what you were actually seen for. The staff at the front desk have rotated at least 4 times in last year. They have no clue as to what they are doing and they have alot of experience talking to each other. I have taken my dog there 4 times in the last three months and have been charged for exam all times for the Vet to tell me nothing. I had asked to get my dogs toes trimmed after we discussed a costly blood draw she left the room the tech came in and back with my dog and I sat there doing nothing thinking I was waiting for more information on the actual blood draw and possible issues that were causing my dog to have issues. NOPE I sat there and finally asked if I was done to a lady passing by. Not only did I take the test for my dog I had to call after a week of hearing nothing to find out what was happening? It just seems as though nobody has work ethic anymore and so the animals suffer and we pay more for services not being done ethically in my opinion. read more

This has been my dogs primary vet for the last 3 years. When I took her in for a nail trim they said they do grooming so I made an appt. When I picked her up she was wobbly, barely able to stand or walk, hurt, limping, dragging her back leg. I asked if something happened during the grooming? They said no. I asked if they'd given her any drugs. They said no. This was on a Friday at 4pm. She was in so much pain that I ended up taking her to Davis Animal Hospital the next morning. After spending seven hours there and $600 later, I was told she has a spinal injury. Yes, my dog is old. She is 15 yrs old. I can understand if she just wasn't cooperative or had enough. THEY SHOULD HAVE STOPPED. They could have lied and blamed it on her being uncooperative but the fact that they sent my dog home half paralyzed offering no explanation whatsoever and blowing it off saying she's old and maybe she's just sore is absolutely mind blowing coming from a so called "wellness center". More like a torture center. I would NOT RECOMMEND THIS PLACE TO ANYONE!! NO ANIMAL DESERVES THIS LEVEL OF CRUELTY AND NEGLECT EVER!! A before (a week before and her normally) and after grooming video. She came back a completely different dog both in spirit and physically. read more

This vet saw my dog for his whole life and my dog that I had before him and all along I was thinking I was getting the best care ever until my current dog ended up in a fight with a mountain lion and developed a pneumothorax in his chest when I initially brought him into the Vet he was having labored breathing and look like he had a collapse along instead of trying to figure out what to do with my animal she just basically guessed and started prescribing him steroids which actually increased his heart rate and made his breathing even more labored when I returned after being left all weekend to worry about my dog on Monday she hastily told me I didn't know what I was talking about and that my dog had nothing but asthma and sent me to a local pharmacy to pick up albuterol that goes into a inhaling machine not sure what I was supposed to do with that with my dog but she tells me I was supposed to just give him the liquid Albuterol I don't know anybody even a human being that would be okay taking that after taking my dog away from this vet and took him to another business in Grass Valley to a vet who was more than overly compassionate and understood that there was something really wrong with my dog come to find out he had a pneumothorax in his chest and could have died if I would have continued with her care she to me is a very incompetent and patient person and seems like running her business is a bother on a side note all of her that text and her front desk people are absolutely amazing caring kind and outgoing but it stops there the professionalism does not exist there if you're looking for a better vet look into motherload Veterinary Clinic in Grass Valley Dr Mario read more

I had the unfortunate choice of of determining the end of life experience for my beloved 16 yr old dog. I heard the vet could assist in a humane euthanasia. I can tell you the experience was horrible any but humane and compassionate. Of all the emotions I anticipated I left there angry resentful and remorseful. Here's the truth. The animal is injected with a powerful drug which incapacitates the dog from expressing any pain yet totally conscious. The vet probes at several attempts to find a vein. Causing excruciating pain. Then when she finally hits a suitable artery she injects an overdose of lethal drug which causes respiratory and cardiovascular failure. The vet might as well just strangle the dog. It took 10 minutes to asphyxiate my dog. She had the bedside manner of the wicked witch of the west. At one point I commented " wonder if I should have let her go on her own" which she responded, "they take forever to die that way". Next she had two young girls carry my dog to my car pausing to let the dogs bodily fields drain onto the sidewalk. tongue hanging out eyes bulging clear signs of trauma dropped my dog in the backsit and muttered the obligatory sorry for your loss. Another day at the races for them I'll spend the rest of my life regretting my decision. read more

I was really glad to find this holistic animal clinic initially so close by, as I believe in alternative care, till I had a very negative experience with the vet there yesterday. Our dog behaved well for the first two visits there, but yesterday, he barked at the vet for no apparent reasons (she was just about to give him a treat, and decided not to because he barked). This barking startled the vet even though it was one loud bark (not a continuous barking). She became very frightened and said something about her being scared by his bark and behavior. I couldn't tell initially that she might have be joking because of the way she reacted. But I found soon that she was not. Our dog did not bark after that, but got close to the vet and started sniffing. I could feel the vet was irritated and nervous. In a few second, she told me that my dog was making her nervous and that I should pull him away from her. At this point, I was feeling judged and rejected, and wanted to leave the place. I pulled the leash but he kept pulling to sniff her,and she requested in a very unkind tone that I really needed to get him away from her. I could see that she was very nervous, and that I should have pulled him harder, but at the same time, I felt like she was unprofessional and acted like a very inexperienced vet by the way she reacted with the whole thing - from one barking. Then our dog seemed to be okay with her, and let the vet give him a treat. At about third or fourth treat, my dog barked at her again. At this point, I had no idea why he barked! But he did. All I can say was that he was really sensing her fear. As he barked, she snapped and said, "That's it!!!" and walked away from the room. The room was created by partition like walls, and I could hear (and she knows I could hear) her talking to her assistants about this experience. She commented about how dogs like ours (pit mix) can be aggressive (which can be true, but true for other dogs, too), and went on to say things which made me feel horrible. I don't know why but I really wanted to cry, and felt bad for our dog as well, for being judged... I drove back feeling horrible, and somehow could not stop crying about the whole experience. I know I was feeling all kinds of things. I came home and talked to my husband and my friend who is very experienced with dogs, vets, and dog training. I realized then that the vet, although had years of experience, she must have had a scary experience in the past with either a pit bull or different kind of dog, and she was projecting a lot of fear from that experience. I'm actually not upset with the vet. I feel bad that my dog scared her. I feel bad that our dog barked at her and it was so puzzling to me that he did that. But I also felt that her reaction was unprofessional. She must deal with so many different kinds of dogs, and I felt that she could have handled the situation in a lot more gentle, thoughtful, kind way. I'm bummed that this happened as I was so excited about this clinic. But there is no way I can go back there knowing she now has a negative feeling towards my dog and me. Our dog will definitely bark next time at her, and I cannot go in there knowing that the same thing will likely to happen. Also, I guess I want to recommend this place, but only to those who have dogs that are not pit mix and do not bark. I guess I needed to write this to communicate to people that I had a very negative experience because of the way the vet reacted. read more

I have had nothing but good experiences with this clinic, Dr Peggy and her staff. They are professional, caring and have always treated my animals well. Three of my dogs have had surgical procedures here and my experiences were very positive. The staff have gone over and above, in terms of time and care. It's interesting that this veterinary clinic utilizes both Eastern and Western veterinary medicine. I think it gives the clients and their pets a wider range of opportunities for addressing good health. I would recommend this doctor and her hospital to anyone who truly cares about the health of their pets. To respond to the previous person who commented (Aiko S), anyone who has has a barking pitbull in their face would be ignorant not to be concerned for their safety. It seems obvious to me that the owner didn't have the dog under control. Which sadly, is often the case. Not just because it was a pit, but because it was misbehaving. Vets and their staff see hundreds upon hundreds of animals in their work and a pet owner may only see their own pet, so the amount of experience the vet has is far and above the regular person. In this business it is critical to err on the side of safety when dealing with an animal's questionable behavior. Since the animal cannot talk and say what it is feeling, only experience can guide you. Vets have TONS of experience dealing with many types of pets who have had less than ideal behavior training. But the vets still treat and try to heal them while doing everything in their power to prevent injury to themselves or anyone else at ALL times. This has to be a zero tolerance situation when dealing with an animal that could potentially bite you and cause major damage. Went here on my friends referral as truly holistic Practitioners are hard to find and I figured worth the 40 min drive. Quite so! This place is warm and friendly with very positive energy. They " fit me in" on a full schedule and I lucked out in more ways than one. They were considerate and attentive and do labs on site rather reasonably. I took my cat in for a consultation as the things I had been doing ( as a human healthcare practitioner ) were not working out as I had hoped. Dr Roberts was very thorough and willing to discuss possibilities . They ask on intro forms... how much you wish to be involved and certainly are considerate of that. All the reviews I saw were for dogs so I hoped it was truly cat friendly also. There was a Scottish Fold on the counter "supervising" and they have the nicest ( by far!) cat exam room I have seen. It was homey, and friendly and my ( vet stressed) cat curled up on the exam rug and more or less "meditated"!( slight exaggeration) It was an excellent experience and affordable for the services that were received. I was looking for a veterinarian where I live (Reno, NV) to do a titer blood test for my dog. My own vet who I've been going to for 18+ years was going to charge me over $500 just to draw the blood and I would have had to send the blood to the lab myself for testing! The other vet I contacted in town would have done the test for just under $500. I contacted the people at Sierra Animal Wellness Center and found them to be much more reasonable at $120! I found the office help very friendly and was quite pleased with my first visit. I have to travel about 1 hour and 30 minutes from Reno to get to this vet but it was well worth the trip. I have been going to Dr. Peggy and Sierra Animal Wellness Center since 2001. She was not the closest or most convenient vet to me but when I first connected with her she was pretty much the last hope for my little dog Ginger. I was intrigued by the fact that she practiced both Chinese and Western medicine. Ginger was epileptic and had uncontrolled grand mal seizures. We had tried everything western medicine had to offer and the prognosis from UC Davis neurologists was grim. Ginger was on so much anti-seizure medication she literally could not walk and still the seizures continued. Beginning with her first acupuncture treatment we saw improvement, then Chinese herbs were added and with Dr. Peggy's guidance we made changes to her diet. Over time her Western meds were greatly reduced and Ginger went from a high of 18 grand mals in one 24 hour period to just 1 or 2 seizures a year. We were given the gift of 10 more years with our sweet girl. Thirteen years later and I still drive 45 minutes to see Dr. Peggy for my other 5 dogs. I love her holistic approach and appreciate the fact that she utilizes whichever approach, Western or alternative, seems appropriate for a given set of circumstances. No dogma here! I believe that her knowledge of nutrition has added years of vibrant good health for each of my critters and I appreciate her sensible but conservative stance in regards to vaccines. The staff is wonderful and caring and I have always received a follow up call after any visit dealing with an illness or surgery. I have learned so much about nutrition, behavioral issues, especially some of the ones that can come with rescues, the importance of good toenail trims (they can impact an animal's long-term structural health... who knew?), vaccines and so much more. I really appreciate the good advice I have been given. She is currently treating my 15-and-a-half year old boy who is dealing with old age and end-of-life issues. Aquapuncture, herbs and laser have helped make him much more comfortable so he can enjoy whatever time is left. I know that when the end comes, as it has for two of my dogs before him, both he and I will be treated with dignity and great compassion. I came into Sierra Animal Wellness because the person who I talked to was friendly and answered all my questions. They also told me that there would be a 20% discount for dental services if paid within the month. While I would have wished for a bit more emotive, expressive or connecting and compassionate energy from the Vet and the staff, I appreciated the time and care given to my pup during and after surgery. The bill was still over $700 but it seemed to be the norm, maybe even a little higher some other places. They also did charge me $20 more than they should have, charging me for nail trimming which supposedly was complementary and which I never even asked for.. and they never credited me the money back. Rather, they said they were going to put it on as store credit. I didn't appreciate this because its not like I bought something and was returning it... they never got back to me to follow up on the matter. Also, the consultation I had was not extensive like I thought it would be; I was expecting the vet to have more holistic care knowledge as advertised...Peggy told me to email her if I had more questions which I thought was nice and relieving but she never got back to me.. The staff also wanted to charge me a tiny portion of medicine for nearly $30, which felt expensive and overpriced. With that said, my dogs teeth look great and he is happier! I'm just going to let the whole thing go after this but did want to make this review because staff is either careless, apathetic or (probably more likely) stressed and overwhelmed by all the other crap going on in the world. I feel slightly bad for making the review because maybe I can be more compassionate in these times; however, they could probably improve some things about themselves and hopefully this will motivate them.
