This review is purely from my perspective as a SPECTATOR/RIDER, not a golfer! I rode in the cart as my friends golfed. The views are pretty spectacular in the spring. They just opened when we arrived on Memorial Weekend, so it was green and the mountains still had snow. The majority of my 4 stars goes to the amazingly great staff and their food! SERVICE - SUPERB! They are so friendly, very accommodating, and when we lost a club, they went out of their way to try and find it, and they did! So thankful for them. A gentleman even escorted me as I grabbed lunch for the golfers. FOOD - Pretty dang good for a golf course! Their fries are well seasoned, the hot dogs had a good bun, and their quesadilla was just what I needed. My friends and I will definitely be returning. read more

Before the bad... Sarah working the register was awesome. She was clearly happy to be there, incredibly helpful, and very professional. Jordan, the golf cart attendant, was equally impressive. She could not have been more attentive. She was friendly, enthusiastic and went out of her way to make sure we were having a good time!! Unfortunately Chuck, on the 18th hole putting greens, ruined our entire experience and was less than pleasant. Hole 18, all three of us on the putting greens... Not only did he insist on taking our carts; he insisted on us leaving, despite us offering to walk our bags off. It was 7:04 pm (admittedly, 4 min beyond closing) and Chuck said "you need to leave, take your bags and go". 2 minutes of negotiating to finish, and Chuck told us he had to clock out, we didn't have a choice. $130 for a round, and THOUSANDS spent between the three of us this year; clearly Chuck's poorly planned schedule took precedence over our $400(ish) game. A very disappointing end to what could have been a good day. While Sarah and Jordan's excellent service led us to a fun round of golf overall, I can not reasonably recommend Sierra Star if unprofessional and rude employees are how we are "welcomed" at the final hole, and last putt. read more

Played the weekend of bluesapalooza. Course views are beautiful but greens were absolute garbage. We were told it was just the first green and the rest are good. Well that was not the case. 1/2 of the greens were dead, with overgrown grass patches and sand. The fact that they charge full rates $170 to play is ridiculous! Played the course yesterday with two others in the afternoon. The fee was $115.00 for a round. When we paid, the guy informed us that there were some greens that were not in good shape. We were only unfortunately there for the week, so we played anyway. No course diagrams on the scorecards, the carts, or even on the hole markers! Stupid! Tee grass great, fairways, great, rough great. But at least five putting greens were in horrible shape! Like a sandy rough surface. There should have been discounted rates!!! Hopefully if when we come back next year, they will have fixed this BIG problem!!! read more

The positive: Beautiful setting. Nice layout that requires your entire bag. You're not just bombing your driver off of the tee on each hole. Jeff from Agoura Hills (I believe his name was Jeff, if not, the Course Marshall from Agoura Hills) was awesome. Super nice dude with outstanding customer service skills. The bad: Rudest staff (with the exception of Jeff) at any course I have ever played. Lamont, the starter, is an ass. I can't think of any other way to put it. Rude from the get go. No need to ever encounter him again in this lifetime. During our round, an older woman and her husband were playing in front of us. She dropped a club bag from her cart at some point and came back looking for it. We hadn't found it, and she and her husband continued backwards looking for the bag. Lo-and-behold, I found it within a few minutes. A maintenance worker who was watering the greens happened to come driving along. Young guy, long blonde hair. I explained the situation to him and asked him if he would mind driving the bag back to the elderly couple that was wandering the course" His reply "Actually, I would mind." He then drove off. Nice customer service. More bad: sanded greens. Outrageous prices on their green fees. The problem is, due to the area, geographically you are left with one other choice or an hour drive. I would probably just skip golf in Mammoth. read more

Amazing course. Views were incredible and greens were pure. Only complaint is that the cart girl was extremely rude.

I don't give out 5 stars often. I really had fun playing here the other day. We played twilight, so we had an occasional wind impact our game some, but this is a beautiful course, fun to play and very challenging. The people working there were very accommodating and very helpful as it was our first time at this course. We try to come here every year, this will be on my list of places to play. read more

Played at Sierra Star the last weekend they were open for 2016 . 5 stars for the golf course . 3 stars for some of the service. My biggest complaint was the attitude given to our group from the starter ( Asian Guy ). Our start delay was originally 20 minutes which eventually turned into 55 minutes. The delay was for early morning frost , but it was the attitude given to not just our group but other patrons as if we were the idiots not knowing that frost delays are common in the fall. My question to Sierra Star is why in the hell book early AM tee times if frost delays are a daily accuracy in the Fall ?? In regards to the golf course it was phenomenal. Narrow fairways, lined with thick timber. A great challenge and great layout . Absolutely beautiful views, small creeks & water hazards add to the Beauty of this course. Perfectly maintained from start to finish. Ball really flies at 7000 feet , what a amazing round. Hope to be back after ski season. read more

Beautiful Mountain Course in Mammoth. I played here over the 4th of July weekend and the staff was very customer service oriented. The course was in great shape. The fairways were tight as each was lined with pine trees. The elevation makes it about a club length shorter on the short irons. No difference on the mid to long irons and driver. I was hoping to see a bear but alas, none were out. They must have been prepping for the big town parade. read more

The course and staff were FANTASTIC but there was an employee golfing (I'm assuming that worked in the pro shop) behind us that was screaming profanity at us to play faster even though we were waiting on the group in front of us to finish each hole. Very disappointing to hear anyone tell me to suck their d*ck especially when they work at the course. After talking to the guys in the pro shop they were very apologetic and immediately gave us a refund. Despite the great customer service, I think it's safe to say me and my group won't be back until that employee is no longer employed by Sierra Star. read more

The positive is it's a beautiful setting and fairly easy course. The negative. They stacked the course with groups of five causing us not to be able to finish our round of 18. We waited at each hole 7 to 10 or more behind multiple groups of five. Then the kicker... we have over an hour of daylight left and the starter comes and says turn in your cart. If you want to finish you can grab you bags and walk. Asked for a refund for the round and was offered a 50% refund. We paid for 18 and should be able to play 18 especially if it's daylight outside. read more

Wow! As a golf beginner I about all I can say is that the course is very pretty but seriously, the more experience golfers I was with said that it's a good course (with narrow fairways). The 5 stars is due to the staff and experience. From the minute we pulled into the parking lot and we were met at our truck with our golf cart, to the friendly and prompt service from the bar and the accommodating welcome from the pro shop. We actually did not have a tee time but when we called to find out if it was possible to get in they said "well come by and if we can will fit you in" - They had us on the golf course within 20 minutes of arrival. Prior to this trip every visit to Mammoth has been for the snow, I will now be going back for the golf as well! read more

What a great course. Worth every cent of the 100 bills they charge. I payed $80, but played after 1pm. It was a little breezy, but not gale force. I played from the Blues and struggled on a lot of the holes. I hit really good drives that dribbled off into the rough, I hit really good irons that bounced off the greens. Very much a championship-style course. A good test of your skills. And just a beautiful course, well maintained, perfect fairways, firm puttable greens. All carved into a new community of condos and houses. Some of the views from the tees are all-time. Nothing special in the apres golf dept., but very nice helpful people in all the positions from starter to bartender. read more

Friendly people work here. It's a very tight layout so higher handicappers are going to hit some trees and lose some balls. Club down at altitude, very few holes require driver. Subtracting a star for really slow play on a Saturday afternoon. read more

The good is that the course is absolutely beautiful and challenging you will catch yourself taking your camera out and taking pictures of certain holes the course is obviously at higher altitude so the ball really flies the bad is the $179 teatime with no snacks on the turn and extremely rude staff. The starter black guy is extremely rude when it comes to doing anything other than just standing there we simply asked for ice and he gave us a ton of attitude you think for $179 they would at least provide water on the course. If you feel like paying Maui prices for municipal service then go ahead and go to this course read more

Sierra Star was a great all around course. Hidden in trees not only makes it a very pretty course but a challenging one too. One of the holes included an actual bear, right in the middle of the fairway. We didn't want to hit up on it, nor play through. It was a great memorable experience. All around it was great time...we replayed later in the afternoon because of it. I would play this course again in a heartbeat the next time I am up at Mammoth. read more

This review is for the women golfers out there! I will ONLy frequent this Mammoth golf course now due to Snowcreeks obnoxious, sexist employees. I was treated no differently than a man at Sierra. They were more than happy to assist me with finding the right set of rental clubs (men's & women's clubs available - unlike Snowcreek) The staff and bartenders at Sierra were lovely and very thrilled to help a woman golfer out! Not to mention how Beautiful the back 9 course was!!!! read more

What a great course. It is real tight, but at least the #1 handicap hole you can bring out the driver and get on in two with an iron. Greens putt very true. They come out to your car and pick you up and load your clubs. They give you free tee's, ball markers, a wet towel, and smiles from everyone. Weather was about 75 vs 100 in LA. I play around 10 to 15 rounds a year at Sierra Star. read more

nice course. I reserve a higher rating for another trip as we apparently played the course the first weekend they were opened. They had two holes that had temporary greens and the other greens were so bad it was frustrating. The greens would hold, but there was so much dead grass or sand, it was like putting on the moon, very frustrating. I do believe that later on in the summer this course would definetly be a 4* course and worth the money paid. At $69 for twilight (after 1:00) the price was way too much for the condition of the greens. All of the workers where very friendly and helpful. read more

If you want views this is your place! If you want good service this NOT your spot. I'd suggest snow creek. Save some money and get way better service. Trying to enjoy some family time and I knew we were slower players so i made sure we were the last ones on the green that night. While finishing a hole my son was taking longer to putt. Then one of the staff members approached us and said we needed to get going. We just looked at him a bit confused bc he said this with no explanation. Then without a word from us he went to say, "I don't care who you are or where you live what you're doing is not cool. Then screamed, "get the F off the course" as they drove by. I wish I was making this up. I wish I would have said something crazy like, "do you know who i am? Do you know where i live!?" But i wouldn't it's 2020 who says those things anymore?!? Get over yourself power trip golf marshall! I've got a young boy learning the game of golf with his Mom and Dad and this is what he'll remember. I think it's clear everyone loves the looks of this place but you can read the earlier reviews for yourself. The service ruins it and it could ruin your entire family's experience. Notice how they don't reply to any of the reviews offering an explanation or an apology. Basic customer service 101 is where they are very deficient. read more

I played the golf course twice between July 2 and July 12. It was in phenomenal shape and the people were extremely nice. On my final round after we got done playing we saw about a 200 pound brown bear while it sounds frightening it was actually a beautiful thing to see read more

Just fantastic!! Played early on a Friday morning. Cost $129, but so worth it. $129 includes cart, free range balls to practice chipping and hitting into a net (no range), bag tag, tees, ball markers, etc. The service was excellent. We parked our car and immediately, someone came out to take our bags and put them into a golf cart. Excellent and friendly service all around. I'm not really used to that, but it was much appreciated. The course was just pristine. Great shape, very well maintained. Perfect tee boxes, fairways, and greens. The scenery was spectacular. Fairways tree-lined, mountain views on every hole, little streams flowing on a few holes, and blue blue skies. The golf was great too. I believe this is the highest golf course in California being at 8000 ft, and wow does the altitude affect things. Every iron into the green or on par 3's needs to be at LEAST one club down than normal. Trust it. I must have lost 4-5 strokes because I did not adjust club selection for altitude. I played from the tips and the course was challenging, but fair. Don't worry about distance off the tee as the altitude makes your second shot shorter than it seems. Just hit your drive straight. All in all, a great experience. I hope I can play this course at least once a year. read more

Very fun! Carts and course we're great condition. Wish they had more in their retail section , and no one was around to help us at the candy shack so bring your own snack ! But beautiful scenery, plan for the morning though because it gets quite windy in the late afternoon and you don't have too much cover! read more

We visited this course in July 2018. Although beginner golfers, we were treated like pros at Sierra Star. Upon check-in at the pro-shop, a golf cart was driven to our car to load our clubs and get us started! Impressive! We were paired with 2 local gals. At first we were intimidated, bc we're both pretty much hackers, but we had a great time visiting with them and hearing all about the area. This course is the HIGHEST one in the US! Gorgeous views! This alone is worth the cost of admission!! Check out the fairway pics on their site! Wow! I could have just ridden around with the occasional visit from the bar cart and been happy. (there's also a place to grab a drink and a snack somewhere out there on the course). We got our money's worth, if you figure strokes per hole-we had lots of swings! Despite the beginner status, we had a great afternoon of golf! read more

A little late in the review, but nonetheless. Played here at the end of July. Played here before a couple times, and this course is always in great shape. Played from the tips, and not terribly challenging. Greens can be tricky, and some holes are a little tight driving. If you're a better player and know your distances, shots tend to be 1 or 2 clubs less. Altitude definitely is the toughest aspect of this course. But it's also the most rewarding. Nothing like bombing a drive 370 yards on an uphill par 5. I always enjoy playing this course every year I'm up for vacation. read more

I played the front nine at Sierra Star twice during my stay in Mammoth Lakes and both times had an excellent experience. Everyone couldn't have been nicer or more willing to make my experience the best. The course was in beautiful shape, challenging, and the surrounding scenery was spectacular. I must say however, that at 8,000 feet, the altitude did get to me a bit. The staff at Sierra is to be commended. They do a first rate job. read more

I echo the above reviews. Beautiful course, well maintained with fantastic and challenging greens. We played on a Sunday AM, first group out and had a wonderful round. So much so that we decided to play again on Tuesday afternoon. We got a tee time - no problem. However, we weren't told there was a group "tournament" going on. Play was quite slow and when we made the turn, we were two of 16 people on the 10th hole. I guess the tournament was the Rude Redneck Locals Open, for they were drunk, rowdy, yelling at each other, constantly. A group allowed us - as a twosome - to play through, then hit into us as we waited in the fairway to hit our approach shots to an occupied green. We gave up after the group that had let us play through, drove past us as we were teeing off to a par 3. There were no marshall's, no one from the course to keep up the pace of play or insure appropriate behavior. We were offered 9 hole vouchers. If we had been told of the tournament we'd have waited a day to play, instead we wasted a beautiful afternoon on a beautiful course. Play here, but make sure you ask if there are any tournaments ongoing. read more
