Haven't been in years and was looking forward to it. While I was the only person in line waiting for a table on a Wednesday night, I was told they could only seat me at the bar. Sierra station came highly recommended by my brother in laws family for a great Mexican spot near Gross Pointe so we decided to give it a try for our last night in town! First of all I will say the vibe of the restaurant feels very authentic! I love the decor that they have and the colorful dining tables and chairs throughout the place. Only thing missing was a live mariachi band! I definitely had high expectations from when we first arrived. The waitress was good, she came to get our order pretty quickly after being seated. Mostly everyone ordered an alcoholic drink. Of course my go to was a strawberry margarita. From what I remember it was decent, nothing special but margaritas are pretty basic drinks. I think it was a bit watered down in all honesty. My husband and I shared the combination dinner which includes a flour taco, cheese enchilada, tostada and beef burrito. With rice and beans on the side. We enjoyed everything in the plate, the enchilada and taco were my top picks from the selection. Realistically the food tasted like anything I could get here in SoCal though. I felt like the flavor was a bit lacking. Not knocking them at all but I did expect it to be a bit better. 4 stars because their food was good and service wasn't bad! Just wish it was more authentic. read more

I haven't been to this place since the late 80s - and it's still just as cool and friendly with delicious food and drinks almost 40 years later. I love the bright decor and cozy feel here, and the staff is friendly and efficient. I really enjoyed the cheese enchiladas verdé, I'm a fan of the green sauce and they nail it here. Sierra Station has been a fixture in Grosse Pointe Park for years. The restaurant has 3 dining areas: the green dining room, the outdoor dining patio, and the yellow dining room. My favorite is the yellow dining room, as it captures the Mexican theme the most of the 3. The bar can be found in this room, as well. The service is adequate, and the food is, as well. Sierra Station is one of the better Mexican restaurants near the Pointes, however, I prefer making the drive to Southwest Detroit. read more

Such a cute styled atmosphere. We were not greeted at the door to see if we were to seat ourselves or not. Staff was just a few chairs away cleaning a table. Guess you wait to be seated?Food was delivered promptly. Enchiladas: chicken was moist and yummy. Chorizo bean dip was amazing. Would be nice if regular beans could be replaced with these as the regular beans are so so. Wet burrito with chunky beef was delish. So tender! Rice was good. Overall 4.5/5 Sierra Station (open for 41 years!) is the definition of colorful ambience. I feel like ADHD and hoarding met up after consuming the 1/2 liter Golden Margarita for sensual night of aesthetic making. That being said the margarita's are potent and I found my tongue notably loosening after 1.5 glasses. Flavor was balanced and not overly sweet... just lovely. The service is very organized even when busy AND uncompromisingly personal. Jeff (the owner/manager) greeted our table personally and gave us the history of the restaurant and the art collection. While the patio (see photos) was closed they gave us a garden tour. The service and ambiance was 6/5, food was 5/5 for portions, drinks 5/5 for potency, and food originality can safely be rated at 4/5. Will be back! read more

One of the worst dining experiences and weirdest owners I have ever encountered. He greeted us with a mouth full of chips and a fist pump...ok. Then seated us in the corner...again ok. After we ordered he(sorry don't know his name) came over and told me he was going to need me to water the plants outside after I finish eating, not funny just weird. Then proceeds to ask across the restaurant if I got enough to eat...not funny, weird and rude. All the while ignoring my man who is sitting across the table from me. Now the food... I am from Southern Cali and can be in Mexico within a half hour from my home, this was some of the worst "Mexican" food I have ever had. Bland, and basically beans from a can...if they weren't, the cook should be fired. Jarred salsa, "Mexican pizza" that was basically nachos and nacho's that were more Mexican Pizza than the Mexican pizza...just weird, not good and not authentic. I do not recommend. This place is the absolute cutest and a feel of Mexico! I came here since my friend lives nearby and this was her turn to choose the dinner location. Our server was super friendly and the owner kept sitting down at my table to talk, which was cool that he made time to talk to his guests. He recommend the Chile Relleño. I'm a little picky with Mexican food so I was hesitant but it was pretty good. The beans and rice included were also good. Next time however, I'd opt out of having chicken in my Chile Relleño and just sticking to cheese, since the chicken was too moist/juicy for me. I'd recommend here, as I hear they're known for their margaritas. My friend (who is the biggest lightweight I know) said her margarita was probably a virgin since (1)she wasn't carded and (2)she didn't get a buzz. She's said that's happened to her a few times before. But I ordered the sangria and it was great. read more

If not for the food, definitely go for the decor and the friendly atmosphere. The inside tables and rooms are packed with all kinds of Mexican decorative mirrors, plants, pictures, dolls, and trinkets. There is something colorful to look at every which way you turn, and you will forever be finding something new each time you go. In the spring the open-air garden opens and is filled with blooms and subtle fragrance, it's just beautiful. Servers are friendly and happy to recommend a margarita, which are delicious. This place is on point with the decor and everything inside and I was hoping my feelings about the food was similar but I was wrong , I should've left when I noticed that a " authentic " Mexican restaurant had fish and chips on there very small menu. I ordered the shrimp fajitas because I figured how can you mess that up but I was wrong again because it came out on a plant with the rice and beans already ( not is a hot skillet like 99% of restaurants) , has no seasoning and was basically just boiled shrimp and vegetables with melted cheese on top , im assuming from the microwave in hope I'm not wrong again . This place when you walk in gives you the "hey it's cinco de mayo, let's have a drink vibe" it's so vibrant and Mexican and pretty and festive. To the point the FOOD! Can you say thank the gods for juicy shredded chicken! Super good! The salsa a little on the spicy side for you spice lovers! The beans and rice had good taste. I would say give this place a try stop in. Whoa their open after 5 pm y'all!!! They also have a patio that's open on certain days and times. I'm sure once we actually hit summer they will open it. BY FAR!!!When we first moved to Grosse Pointe, we thought we would have to go back to our old neighborhood, or downtown to get authentic Mexican food. Well, we discovered the Sierra Station about 6 months after moving into the area, and 33 years later, we haven't been downtown or to the old neighborhood for Mexican dinners since. The atmosphere is fantastic, the food is incredible, and the service is fabulous. Even the owner is out in their dining rooms helping the servers and always talking to his customers. He has a great sense of humor. It's always fun to see him. They are amazing. We wouldn't go anywhere else for Mexican food. They are definitely the best in town, and the surrounding area. What made it worse was the waitress bringing the menu over to try and rationalize what they were serving. Then proceeded to go to the next table and actually talk about me complaining. The party behind me ordered nachos and when they came out, the lady had the same disbelief and complaints as me as well. This place is wayyy off and I don't know how they are getting away with their dinners, service, or anything else for that matter. I mean, this is our new favorite spot. I hope to become regulars here because every time I walk in I am transported to Mexico. Not only is the vibe incredible in here but the food and the drinks are unbeatable. The margaritas are like none I've ever had before-they actually have tequila in them!! Not to mention, we have not had one bad thing on the menu and trust me we have tried almost everything. Jeff is the best too. It always impresses me to see managers/owners actually working the restaurant, helping staff, and asking tables how they are doing. It really makes for a great experience. Being in the service industry myself for 10 years I have had plenty of owners/managers that didn't help at all so I can really appreciate how much love goes into this place. Every dish comes out hot and the chips, salsa and guac are always fresh tasting too! Since we were celebrating our 21st wedding anniversary, we figured our marriage was now old enough to drink! So, heading out to the Sierra Station for food and libations made perfect sense. This place has been around for a while and they still know how to make great Mexican food and serve up a potent margarita. The service is always friendly and efficient. I highly recommend the Camarones al Mojo de Ajo (Shrimp in garlic sauce with rice and beans): fresh, big, deveined shrimps with a garlic kick. Finish it off with the flan or the huge strawberry shortcake and you won't be disappointed. The ambiance is casual and comfortable. There was no music piped in to compete with the conversations; just the low, inaudible murmurings of the televisions behind the bar. We were a little put off by the outdoor seating being closed for whatever reason. Also, I cringed when our waitress repeated my inquiry about the "flan" with her nasally, Midwestern pronunciation of the item. read more
