This school absolutely sucks. They believe that they're all high and mighty but my experience here…read morewas horrible. The principals (the main one and the 4 assistant principals) are absolutely rude, don't care about their students, and are sometimes even racist. They're horrible and rude to students including those who do good, the teachers (like the 7th grade science teachers, the cafeteria ladies, and the student success women) are extremely rude and disrespectful, and random teachers (I don't know their names) like to yell at the students. The students are constantly fighting and being rude to each other and even cyberbully each other. Yet, what do the principals do? They don't do ANYTHING! I got in the most trouble during a situation I had little to do with and the other people involved (who did the most) got in little to no trouble. The most they got was a phone call home but I was suspended. I'm never coming back here ever again and my mental health has gotten significantly better after leaving. Parents and students, if you're thinking about sending your kid/yourself here, take it from me - STAY AWAY. Get better education somewhere else and save yourself the trouble. The teachers don't care about you, and everyone is fake. Students get intimate in the bathroom sometimes, leak each other, and even smoke/vape in the bathroom. They even hired some teachers who didn't have a good background and shouldn't be around kids - yet, they never looked at it!

My child attended Southwest Legacy from 4th grade to 8th grade. It's been a mixed experience…read more Teachers are hit or miss. Overall though, they seem pretty decent and want your child to succeed, even offering free after school tutoring. Some were very quick to respond to emails, some you would wait 1-2 days before hearing anything back. As far as homework load, that seemed fairly balanced. My child didn't have much trouble getting it done. My only suggestion would to be to switch up the semester Science projects. It was the exact same packet and project choices, for five years. They never did anything different and by grade 8, my child was mind numbingly bored with the same options. Next: bullying and drugs. Bullying is absolutely not tolerated here. Shout out to the Vice Principal, Mrs. Chipman, whom nips it in the bud with a quickness. They also have zero tolerance when it comes to drugs and are swift to react to any incidents. So high kudos for that. School events; a few are themed and very cute, others thrown together with very little thought (especially this last year). There would be only a couple days notice to the day before the event. It was strange. Graduation for 8th grades was not well executed either; no enforcement on the 4 tickets limit given so everyone that wanted to, attended (aunts, uncles, cousins, grandparents, you name it). They ran out of seating quickly due to this. It was unfair to those that followed the guidelines and they never addressed it. For a school that is so stringent with kids regarding rules, that was a bit disappointing to see. Next up, the front office... if you're lucky enough to catch them on a good day, they can be very helpful but again, that is a mixed experience. Catch them on (regular) bad days and they are dismissive, short, and rude. As someone who has to make calls throughout the day at my job -and- taking in consideration that I'm sure they deal with a few unpleasant parents, I'm always polite, not once ever calling with an attitude. It doesn't seem to matter. And God help you if you get ahold of Alisha; the rudest, most foul tempered of the lot. How she still works there is absolutely beyond me. If I spoke to clients the way she does to parents, I'd be fired in an instant. It got to the point that if I heard her voice answer, I would just hang up and try again later. Last but not least, the emails. I get that they need to keep people informed but the frequency that they send them is just obscene. I'm not joking. It's -at least- three times a week and the timing is so random. Sometimes you'll get them at 2pm and sometimes you'll get them at 5pm, 7pm, and up to 9pm. Weekends aren't safe either. They really need to learn to reel that in with designated frequency, days, and times. It gets overwhelming quick and it's easy to miss updates. Overall, it's an okay school but needs some restructuring, especially the front office staff.

This situation of bullying is an ongoing situation && nothing seems to be resolving within the school principals, counselor, security, etc I'm a very concerned parent of a child that is being continued to being bully on your school campus With no follow ups or return of phone call/emails Investigations && follow ups are important && for days to pass with no communication is very disturbing My daughter has been attacked from behind 3 times in less than 2 months of school being in session && it seems the staff at Dessert Oasis HS has no control over their students Signing a no contact contract obviously means nothing to these kids && policies need to be taken differently It is ridiculous on how you talk to different principals && staff of the HS && they all have different ways of trying to solve or say to this situation I don't understand why? When a parent is dropping their child off to school for education && is getting texts && calls from their child that she wants to be picked up because she is being attacked, I feel the school apparently is unsafe && not doing their duty to have children in their hands What do you have to say? Bullying is very serious && it seems your school thinks otherwise!! To feel the need to have to pull my daughter from your school is unfair She may not be a 4.0 student but she's been attending her classes && tries to be in class doing her studies To have to worry about passing periods && break times not knowing if she's going to be assaulted from behind is just sad YOU SHOULD HAVE ALL THE STATEMENTS && REPORTS && PREVIOUS EMAILS SENT BACK && FOURTH BETWEEN MYSELF && PRINCIPALS, COUNSELOR, STAFF ETC THAT I'VE COMMUNICATED WITH MOVING FORWARD IS WHAT WE HAVE BEEN DOING BUT WHEN IS ENOUGH, ENOUGH!! When you identify a problem...like having kids go inside their underwear waist...searching kids..no safety in this.. females doing searches on males..with no male present.. teachers having melt downs in their classrooms taking it out on children thru retaliation in grades, emails which are toxic coming from educators...The unfortunate thing is this school operates in dysfunction total chaos. Unable to articulate their own handbook..everything that looks gold ain't gold. A hall aide told me to shush when I was going to speak up about their outrageous unclear rules and directions. I paused and said to myself be quiet in astonishment...absolutely Not! I will call out every wrong intent or action. Nevertheless the uniform is the only nice thing. Its can be expensive for some. It doesn't actually match the school academics/substance. Parents save yourself the hassle and kids find a school that practice what they preach. Which have qualified teachers and administrators. Anyone can open a school...and not be an educator. I disapprove of this charter school 100%

The principal is amazing! Communication is very good! Something we didn't have consistent at his elementary school. The parking, drop off and pick up traffic is always smooth. They have a flow that everyone is supposed to follow. I do hate the selfish parents that sit in their cars waiting for their kids while blocking the parked cars. Grrrr! I think the school staff should work on getting those to leave. I especially LOVE that they schedule a day for us to pick up their school schedules prior to first day of school. That day not only gives us an opportunity to get classes ahead of time, but getting lockers and combo too, we get to check their classrooms and have a game plan of where to go so that the kids aren't late and lost looking for their classrooms and lockers on the first day of school. A nice sneak peak for us parents too =) On that day, we have the opportunity to pay for everything upfront such as the PE uniforms, Elective class fees like my son's orchestra fees and concert uniform fees, Tarkanian Merchandise, etc any questions at all, the Counselors have their own table and are available to answer any concerns. This is held in both their cafeteria and Gym. I really love this! It's less stress and less hectic on the first day/week is school for the kids! I have a lot of nieces and nephews who go to other middle schools and none of them do this! They tell me how crazy it is with payments of class fees etc on first week and some take weeks before they even get their PE uniforms and lockers A few weeks in the school year, they schedule another event which is the official meet and greet/open house for parents to meet each class/teachers, they go over class expectations, grading scales, contact Information, answer any questions for parents, clarify what needs to be clarified, etc. an announcer gives each class about 10-15 mins and it's like a musical chair game and we move to the next classroom. I absolutely LOVE this idea!! A VERY organized school overall! The principal/ assistant principal is in the courtyard available for any questions and to just greet the parents, direct foot traffic. They continue to amaze me! (Mr Reece Oswald & Mr Musemici) My son has no issues with his teachers and staff, just the student's culture which isn't something anyone can control I think. As most middle school aged kid, he said his first year, all everyone talked about is sex, dating, swearing etc. that is unfortunately not avoidable in middle school. He said in his 3 years so far (2-3 months in 8th grade right now) he has only seen 2 fights. But it was broken up fairly quickly by the staff, 2 girls fighting in the cafeteria and 2 young new 6th graders boys. So far no bullies that I know of. I ask my son from time to time. He seems fairly happy at this school. Great friends, great food (I don't pack him food, he prefers Catherine cafeteria food believe it or not lol) The front office admin team is nice and pleasant. =) They have kids in each hallways that monitor and direct. I'm not sure what they're called but it's pretty awesome. The school used to sit on the desert by itself but since my son's first year there, they've built houses all around it now. So contruction was a nightmare. It's almost done now though. (Nov 2019) so all the houses and streets surrounding it is brand spanking new. American west homes. (Those are nice homes!!) very clean and quiet neighborhood. Safe when there are no creepers following kids around. There was 1 incident where a white truck followed a kid walking to school, it was on the news but the kid made it to school safely and the parents were notified immediately and was also in the local news. Oh and they have themed school dances every year for all grades which is pretty awesome to have! The kids enjoy it!! The kids seems to fear the staff (lol) which is a really great sign the staff is doing their jobs of discipline and establishing authority and as a parent, I am all for that!! My son is in orchestra and misses Mrs. Gray. She unfortunately moved out of state but he says his current teacher Mr McGlasson is actually pretty awesome too. It is also currently a 5-star rated school!! Pretty excited about that! I will continue to add more to this review if needed by end of school year but it has been so far so good. No complaints in 3 years. =)
