Some airlines require you to fly smaller planes out of Norfolk with layovers and plane changes at a hub. There are convenient direct flights such as Delta to LaGuardia in NYC. This is an important flight for me. Another direct flight is one my sister took for many years on Southwest from Nashville. My earliest experiences with flying were in really small airports, some of which probably no longer exist. You haven't lived until you've flown a single prop plane that shook all the way up and down then landed in Greenville, MS stopping just as it reached the levee of the Mississippi River.. When I moved to Atlanta in 1971 my flying experiences completely changed with Hartsfield-Jackson. My first encounter with Norfolk International was when my then 4 year old son & I were coming to meet my already relocated husband to look at houses. My son flew with us a lot from Atlanta. So his experience was with the busiest airport in the world. As we taxied to our gate he said "Oh look, a baby airport. Have you ever seen an airport so small? Isn't it cute?" The more I shushed him the louder he became. People started looking at us. I thought "These people are never want us living here." Forty years later the airport has grown. A new terminal has been built, parking has been expanded with more expansion in progress. An extremely convenient "Park & Wait" lot has been built for those waiting to pick up someone at baggage claim. A new rental car building is in planned and in progress. The airport is convenient, close to my house and meets my needs and those of my family flying in. Forty years later it's served me well.

The bathroom is ok accessibility wise. A wheelchair user might find the one disabled stall to be a bit cramped, but you can fit the chair in there. The toilet isn't too high off the ground, so a transfer could be easier than some locations. I am five feet tall and my feet don't reach the floor on the toilet. The door has a hook that is only a few feet off the ground so a person in a wheelchair or of short stature could easily reach it. There is a large inset shelf above the toilet upon which belongings can be placed. There are grab bars behind and beside the toilet. However, the grab bar beside the toilet is almost completely useless because the toilet paper dispenser blocks you from grabbing it. There is another vertical grab bar above that, it wouldn't work for a wheelchair user. The main bathroom space has a built in footstool for the sink and a needle disposal container. The sinks are too tall for a wheelchair user.

Free wifi. It's 2017 and there are airports that don't have free wifi. So glad this airport has it. Our flight was delayed for 3 hours. Not fast but efficient. Played some games and made some video calls. 2. The USO. Free drinks and snacks. Volunteers checked up on us and made coffee when needed. 3. Numerous outlets and USB charging spots. 4. Food- the only restaurant was so so but stayed open an extra few hours because they knew our flight was delayed. Not the happiest bunch serving us but the food was ok but not many options available. 5. Cherry blossom trees. They were blooming at the time. Reminded me of Japan. Need improvements: 1. Processing large units. Really slow. Only 2 screeners. Slow at ticketing and checking our luggage and cargo. 2. Food- the one restaurant- a lot of options were sold out or not available. Frustrating when you ask for three things and they don't have em in stock. Would of loved to try their adobo plate but had to settle for choice #4. Not a bad experience but not the best either. Then it was a single building, one room, two gates terminal, but now it has evolved into a multi-level terminal with elevators, huge spacious seating/waiting areas upstairs, a roomy USO with free internet access, reading material, etc, a dependent lounge, and even restrooms with single shower facilities! Downstairs are the check-in and passenger terminal counter, and even lockers to store your gear temporarily so you don't have to drag your life in luggage all over the place; unfortunately the lockers are so small but inexpensive that you can't place anything larger than a chihuahua, the lockers measuring about (very approximate) 15" square. A small sports bag would probably fit inside with no problem and are located in front of the check-in counters. I love this terminal because the numbers they use have remained unchanged throughout the decades I've used and known of this terminal. I am told there is a free shuttle during working hours. I was originally advised free wifi is located on the top floor where there is even a huge charging station, but even downstairs the wifi was very fast and connectable. Terminal is NOT open 24/7 so make plans for lodging should you arrive here and don't get out the same day. NOTE: Be prepared to sit with soldiers/airmen and LOTs of them as I discovered when I first arrived.

I generally come to this station monthly for an in-person work meeting that's only 0.1 miles away from this station. I start my ride at the Newtown Rd. Station. My most recent ride was on May 15, 2026. The Eastbound and Westbound Stations on opposite sides of the road. You want to make sure that you are on the correct platform. The area around the station can be quite busy. I love that they have a braille sign for the station too, so those that can't see can tell which station they are at. You can see you're in the heart of the city. There are many things to do nearby as well. I've never felt unsafe in this area. I was able to see places such as Nauticus and Waterside Dr. that weren't too far from the station too, so that's a great way to get there too. The ferry to get over to Portsmouth isn't too far away either. As of May 2026, they have changed how you pay for riding The Tide Light Rail System. Discounted tickets are no longer available at the new ticket vending machines. You will need to get a GoMobile Fare Card, or now, as of May 18, 2026, you can just tap to pay by using a credit or debit card at the Fare Validator (photos included). To use the Fare Validator, you would open the GoMobile App, use a physical GoMobile Card, or Credit/Debit Card. In the app, you need to choose the card you are using and place it towards the top part of the validator. If you have a QR code, you can go down just a bit to that other reader on the fare validator. It costs $2 to get the fare card itself, and then you can load funds to it at the ticket vending machine or through the GoMobile app. The total cost for a day will be no more than $4.50. The first two rides will be $2, followed by the third being $0.50. Any further rides on the light rail that day will incur no additional charges. Overall, this is a great way to get to the heart of the city through the light rail system. You get to save some miles and gas/electricity for your vehicle too. Even better, you don't have to deal with accidents and such that may occur on Interstate Two-Sucksty Four (I-264) in Norfolk. You don't have to deal with the costs of parking in Norfolk since parking is free at their park and ride lots available at select stations (not at this one). We were looking for a gym and decided to take advantage of the gym located on base (Oceana). There is ample parking and it's very spacious. It has different types of equipment that I'm sure meets everyone needs. It's maintained very well and in addition to the employees constantly cleaning, the expectation is that everyone clean up after themselves once they finish using the equipment. We haven't explored the entire gym but hope to do so soon. They post everything that is available and there is plenty to pick from.

The signs are not eye and maybe are hidden or covered by trees. Having a dedicated trolley lane makes it easier to indicate that you're waiting to be picked up but it was still unnecessarily difficult as first time riders to figure out where to stand. All of the drivers we encountered were pleasant and friendly, and the trolleys were clean with options for air conditioned seating or a fresh breeze if you sit towards the back. Customers will need to drive in back to enter. The lot is huge and signage is over the door. Of note this is the only passport service on the Southside. Appointments are highly recommended, but when slow they will take walk-in. Customers can compete forms online or in person. Check or debit card appear to be the only two forms of payment. Cash was not discussed however. There is plenty of seating as the area is spacious. Two agents were working and luckily caught at a slow weekday. The wait was short, the process easy and the customer service exceptional. My daughter who is 18 will have her passport in around six weeks. She also opted for a second form of ID the passport card. It's the size of a drivers license. It's somewhat newer. You can bring your own photo of official size, or opt for the agent to take. If picky bring your own, the photo for my daughter came out extremely light. My experiences with the post office have been average to weak, so this is a huge bump in confidence for the U.S. Postal Service. Also of mention for those that need documentation they can obtain online through Vital Check. I requested a Yelp edit to add passport services. Full 5 stars.

My most recent ride along the rail line was on May 15, 2026. Although the station is called the Newtown Rd. station, it is actually located on Curlew Rd, which is not too far off from Newtown Rd. This is a pretty big area, as there are several bus stop connections here, as well as a large parking area just across the street. Parking is free. There isn't much else around the immediate vicinity of this station and have never felt safety was an issue here. As of May 2026, they have changed how you pay for riding The Tide Light Rail System. I have not encountered any issues or feeling unsafe. This is a great way to get into the heart of Norfolk without dealing with the traffic and parking in the city. If you plan to visit downtown Norfolk, this is a great way to get around the city during your visit.

I took my first ride on the Tide this year. I remember how much I wanted to jump on way back when…read morethey had the inaugural launch and were offering free and/or reduced fares. Somehow it never worked out, even though it would make downtown trips less painstaking. My opportunity to ride the tide came as part of a work project. The team and I arrived early in the morning on a brisk day. The parking lot has an abundance of spaces, more than adequate for the average number of passengers riding the Tide daily. Parking is free. HRT has a connection here for those needing to take the bus to the TIDE or once they depart from the TIDE. And there are a few shelters for the HRT riders to wait under. There are also a few ticket vending machines where you purchase your fare. The team and I climbed the platform where there were two shelters with seating that thankfully partially shielded us from the cold wind. The conductors were nice and greeted us. We felt safe with the security guard on duty walking through and keeping an eye on things. At a certain point of the ride all tickets are checked and confirmed as legit. We had all day passes which cost $4. The TIDE was packed during the morning commute but was practically empty by 2 pm. Get dropped of directly in front of the Mall, Library, and the baseball stadium. Because it was my first ride I wanted to know what to expect. I looked up and memorized a few facts which came in handy as I told the team how fast the average speed was of the car and the max speed as well as the occupancy, and the max occupancy with commuters standing. Maximum Operational Speed is 55 mph. Maximum Number of Seated Passengers is 68 and the Total Passenger Capacity is 160-180.
