It is probably one of Philly's worst places when it comes to customer service. This place has no waiting room, so you either get their on time or wait in the street. Booking appointments is also not as smooth as it seems. there is seemingly no interval between appointments, and if you try to reschedule an appointment after you have just finished speaking to the owner, explaining to her five minutes before your appointment that you would be running late, due to an unenforceable event (getting stopped by the police for a traffic violation) for some unknown reason that reschedule would be impossible to book. nether by calling the studio directly, nor by being transferred to their booking service line. after calling 3 time when I was just out side waiting for 45 minutes, I gave up and I figure out that their cancellation policy would allow them to keep the fee even though the service was not preformed. what a way to earn ones living, this would have been my second time, I should have stuck to my initial impression and never return. and to believe, I tipped her $15 for a $27 job. I went to Kristen because of the rave reviews she got. I got an eyebrow and lip wax. I gave her 2 stars only because she is a nice girl and her studio is cute and clean, and because (thank god) my lip wax turned out ok. My eyebrows, however, not so much. I'm not sure if the wax was not hot enough or what the issue was but the skin under my eyebrows was ripped clean off. I have never had a reaction to waxing before and I have been waxing for about 8 years now, this is not a reaction to the wax but simply my skin being waxed off in addition to the hair. It was pretty painful and I had to go home and ice my eyebrows due to the swelling and put neosporin on them. I now have to go to a black tie wedding this weekend with huge scabs under my eyebrows. I'm breaking my loooooooong Yelp hiatus in order to write this review. Kristen is, hands down, the best waxer I've ever had the pleasure to come across in all my years. Keep in mind I work in the beauty industry... I've been getting Brazilians for the better part of my adult life. Yes, it's your kitty, and that is not going to be a pleasant experience no matter who you go to or what their technique is. So I thought. Kristen is funny and kind (which helps you get your mind off of such things), but more importantly is a crazy skilled waxer. Honestly, I've never have had such a painless, easy going, perfect (read: no redness, no irritation, no bumps) Brazilian wax in all my life. The facility itself is clean (no double dipping!!) and welcoming. Her prices are better than most places in Center City and the quality of work is there without the catch of being tried to sell a "package" or a "deal". Ok, I think I found my match. I live right around the corner from Silk, so I figured I would give it a try on my day off. It was incredibly easy to make an appointment with Kristen, and convenient for me to get to, which is something I value highly. A lot of waxers are located in the Rittenhouse/Center City area, but I want to go to one that's close to me. Passyunk Square people- if this is an issue of yours- give Kristen a try. The location is easy like I said before, and the space is nice. It's small and cozy and you are the only person there, so you don't feel like anyone is waiting on you, or knows what's going on behind the curtain. Kristen uses hard and soft wax, and she has disposable panties if you do not feel comfortable bearing it all for a bikini or a brazilian. She has a very good technique, and although bikini waxes are never pain free, she is very good at making it less painful. I told her I had seen another person who tweezed me endlessly, so Kristen didn't tweeze me at all. Here is what sealed the deal for me. I have absolutely NO BRUISES. Every single other waxer I went to, I had bruises right after that would stay for days, and I always blamed myself. No. There are waxers out there who can wax you without hurting you and bruising you, and Kristen is one of those waxers. Also, my skin only looked like it had just been waxed (a little red with some bumps) for a few hours after. By the next morning, I was completely beach ready and had no signs of a waxing! I usually get red bumps for a day or so, and a lot of times i would bleed a little. No bleeding whatsoever with Kristen, and the red bumps were gone the next morning. I even went swimming in the ocean and had no irritation in the freshly waxed area. Usually bumps break out, but not after getting a wax with Kristen. Another perk: she has a very tidy process. Many other places I have gone to, including International and Pilleggi, the waxers have left remnants of wax all over my thighs. It has been so bad I usually schedule my services late in the day so that I can go clean up afterwards. Kristen was so clean and efficient that I went shopping right after and could have easily forgotten that I had just been waxed. I am sold. For months, I had gone to another place in center city due to it being recommended on Yelp especially for men, and thought everything was fine but not the most pleasant or easy experience. Cue another Yelp search, and finding Silk & Kristen. WORLDS apart, and such a great experience, anyone and everyone should set up a time and schedule anything here with her. What used to be awkward and messy, is now a fun (yes, really) and easy experience, and Kristen is a pleasure to be around. End up laughing the whole time, and come out with no strange residues, no need for helping her position things, OR any pain. I'm still not sure how that's possible, but she knows her stuff. I gave 4 stars instead of 5 only because I've never gotten a body wax service before, and I can't honestly compare if I don't know, but for first timers, I STRONGLY recommend going to see Kristen at Silk. She made me comfortable, minimized the pain, and was so super friendly and awesome. The studio is on a quiet block in a very nice south Philly neighborhood. Kristine's offices are warm and welcoming, private, and a mix of a spa's upscale decor with a doctors office level of professionalism. She is knowledgeable in her field and very good at what she does. I'm gonna give 5 stars because, although I never had waxing services in the U.S.A before, I believe in general concept is the same: Kristen knows what she's doing, she is considerate and carefull towards you and the process, you can tell she really focus on you and on what shes doing, but on top of it all: she has magical techniques!... I mean Ill jump from Hair cuttery to a new salon, even when I smoked I'd smoke almost any brand....but I will not be going to anyone else for waxing ever again. Love this place. I started going to Silk when I moved to Philly earlier this year, and I am SO happy I discovered this place. Kristen is an unremitting perfectionist--i.e., exactly what you want for this type of service. She is incredibly talented and, simply put, a very cool person. I saw that some reviewers were taken aback by what they perceived to be "curt" or "negative" interactions. It should be noted that Kristen not only provides the waxing services, she also owns and runs the entire operation, including answering the phone and scheduling appointments. She's not curt, she's just multi-tasking! Plus, she'll bend over backwards to accommodate her customers schedules. Most importantly, she does a remarkable job of ensuring the customers' privacy--the waxing studio is very small, hence the strict door/doorbell policies. Well I was scared as could be going to Kristen for a brazillian because I had been tortured by other waxers before AND I was getting married in 5 days so I didn't need or want any irritation on my destination wedding day. SOOOOOOO glad I didn't let my fear overcome me to the point of not making the appointment. She was able to fill me in at the given time I needed with no problem and she was super nice and personable as you would need while sitting through such an awkward experience. Her studio is very intimate and adorable and I loved the location because I didn't have to circle a thousand times looking for parking. Their was plenty of free street parking. She made sure to go over any allergies in reference to the wax and she explained the reasoning behind her using both hard and soft wax. Kristen is officially my new esthetician . What I liked the most was that after she was done she left the space so that I could double check her work and let her know if I was ok with the end result. Given the fact that it was my first Brazilian wax ever!!! I am very satisfied with the results!!! Let me list the details: 1. After reading the ratings I had called Silk studio and booked the appointment and I got it on the same day at 1:30 with Kristin. =] 2. The place was easy to find and there was plenty of parking. 3. The atmosphere was very clean, warm, and welcoming! p.s the place smelled like chocolate. 4. I met Kristin who is a kind heart and knowledgeable woman who answered all of my questions and concerns. After signing a few paper I was in the waxing room. 5. Kristen used two different kinds of wax. The soft wax is used for the inner lady part which she peeled off with her finger and the second wax was a hard wax which was used for the pelvic and the back door area. I can say from 1-10 where 10 is the most painful I say that it was a 4 (this is coming from someone who can handle pain so I don't know how it is for sensitive people). 6. I also thought that it was going to be awkward since my lady parts were all out there on the table, but Kristin helped me relax by sharing some of her horrible experience of being waxed at nail salons.. This made me feel very comfortable and we were able to laugh about it. 7. For every area she used a new stick! She does not double dip, guys!!! 8.After the process was over Kristen allowed me to check to see if there was any missing spots. I felt that she did a meticulous job and I am very pleased with the outcome! 9. There was no burn marks, puffiness, or residual pain!!! 10. What can I say, Kristen made me feel very comfortable during my Brazilian wax. The appointment was easy to setup and less intense than the other places I've went for waxes. She is very thorough and the conversation also help to keep my mind off of the pain. When I go downtown, I usually have to park and pay at a garage but for Silk, the onstreet parking was a plus. I sat on the front stoop of the row home for 20 minutes because I saw her note said to not ring the doorbell until the appointment time--4:30pm. A gentleman left the building and held the door for me at 4:25pm. I knocked on the unlabeled 2nd floor door and asked if I had the correct place. She said yes, I sat down on the sofa and she derisively asked if I had read the sign on the front door. Her negative tone and attitude took me by surprise. I told her I wouldn't need her services. I decided to try Silk out after looking at her positive Yelp reviews. Like a lot of women, I always went to the nail salon to get my eyebrows waxed and years of that did damage to my brows. How lucky am I that Silk moved in right next door to me!!?? I had the opportunity to get waxed this am by Kristen and it was a great experience. The place is small but cute and clean. I tried this place after reading all of the good reviews. The waxing itself was quick and pretty pain free but there are multiple reasons why I won't be going back. 1. You may have to wait outside in all types of weather. She's a one woman show so if she's with a client, she can't answer the buzzer. I got about 5 bug bites while I sweated outside waiting to get in for my appointment. 2. Her phone or paper scheduling system doesn't seem to sync with her online booking system. This leads to overbooking and ultimately running late. I called to book my appointment and when I showed up I found out that someone else booked an appointment online for the same time. 3. Normally I wouldn't mind waiting once I got inside but all that's between you and the client she's working on is a curtain a couple of feet away. It's a bit awkward. 4. And last but not least, once I got home I realized that my thighs were hot and blotchy. I've been getting bikini waxes off and on for the past 12 years and it felt worse than usual. I figured it would go away by the next day but it actually got worse and I had to use cortisone cream and ice to get it under control. I'm assuming it was some sort of allergic reaction but I'm not 100% certain. Take these other things in to account while booking an appointment. read more
