Walking in here took my breath away, the decor is amazing, and well put together. The service was absolutely wonderful. The food on the other hand was not my favorite. My son ordered broccoli beef, and told me it tasted funny, I didn't really taste anything, so it was a flavorless dish. I ordered ginger beef, it was made with LARGE ginger pieces, and anyone who knows ginger knows that you don't need a lot of ginger to get lots of flavor, and too much can be over powering, and that it was at times. I've had way better, but I've also had way worse. I highly suggest asking to box your own food up, if it does not fit, it does not go home with you. Also, I have a feeling that the leftover food gets re-served, my rice obviously came from different batches, and one scoop looked already messed with, and looked like it had already came in contact with other food. The ambiance of the place is rather nice. But that is really the only good thing they've got going for them. If you care about the food aspect, then you are in for a real disappointment. This is probably the worst Thai food I have ever had. I had the chicken salad and fried rolls and it was all around nasty. The sauce they paired the fried rolls with was NOT Thai in the slightest. I've never actually eaten at Silk Thai, but I have ordered to-go food from here a million times, and thus feel the need to review it. I have a staple here that I order on a near weekly basis, and I've been hesitant to try much else because it's just so damn dependable and delicious: red curry with tofu and brown rice. The sauce is spicy enough at a medium rating, and is delicious spiced to nicely complement the coconut milk. The zucchini and green beans are always perfectly cooked and tasty. I've had the green and yellow curries as well, and they both also contain delicious flavorful sauces and fresh vegetables. They've mixed up my brown rice for white a couple of times, but that wasn't a huge deal and it hasn't happened since. The fresh tofu spring rolls are also a great choice as their peanut sauce is sweet and savory and one of the best I've ever had. The servers are a bit shy as previously mentioned, but always nice and my order has always been ready in their predicted 15 minutes. When I eventually eat here I will re-evaluate the rating, but for now, it gets four for being pretty tasty standard Thai to go fare. read more

Silk Thai was the worst experience I've ever had at a Thai restaurant. The ambiance is great! When I walked in the decoration amazed me. It is the only reason I gave a 2 not a 1. Service was horrendous. I'm not sure what day we came on but the place wasn't very busy. At least 3 or 4 open tables. Anyways we were placed in the back of the restaurant which did not help. We ordered green curry and Thai iced teas. Our food came out 40 minutes after we ordered it. And it was cold! I ordered green curry since when was that served cold anyway we ate it. Let's say our drinka never made it to the table after grabbing or waitress 20 minutes after ordering then finally getting up after we received our order going over to the cash register where the staff was mingling(seriously?) and asking for our drinks. Even after that they never came! I'm thinking to myself "am I really paying to eat here?" So anyways if you don't trust my service review here's my food review. Our curry (panang and green) was not good at all. My friends ordered some bbq or another and that was good. Just don't go there for curry. DELICIOUS!!! Being a Tacoma Foodie Newbie, I've only tried four Thai restaurants here in Tacoma and Silk Thai Is the best I've had so far. I first heard of this place through my boss when she hosted lunch for us at the office. Among the entrées she ordered, I really enjoyed the Garlic Chicken, and Chicken Phad Thai. I swore I could've went for seconds and maybe thirds but out of respect, I didn't... Lol. I promised myself that I'd visit the restaurant, and soon. Today for lunch my partner and I had the pleasure of dining there which was the best lunch I've had all week! The restaurant is small, however, the Ambience was great! Wood furniture, Thai Buddhist statues and paintings, the decor is very ethnic and not so pseudo Asian American. Even during the busiest lunch hour, we were seated within a few minutes and the wait staff was very polite and a tentative. My partner and I ordered the lunch special Yellow Chicken Curry, Mongolian Beef, and Beef Phad Thai and boy was it delicious!!! We didn't know what to expect when choosing the spice level so we stuck with a 2 star. It was more mild than spicy so next time I'll try a 3. Viewing the ordinary strip mall that houses Silk Thai, I made only mediocre expectations for my next meal. I was, however, pleasantly surprised with their very exotic decor inside, a complete flip from their external appearance. The continued to surprise me with quick service and even better food. I've now been a few times and I have not been dissappointed by them yet. Their red curry is a classic, and very very good. The place stays busy, but it reminds me of a Chinese restaurant we went to puyallup when we first moved to tacoma. Above average reviews for only ok food. My first concern was the Chinese bbq pork with mustard. My second was the fav menu. We had a gift card so it was fun to go there, but there are $12 left and i don't know if we will go back to use it. The food: Pot stickers - soft and greasy Pad thai - sweet not good Pineapple curry - was pretty good but had green beans. That was weird. Tacoma doesn't seem to have much in the way of Thai, but Silk Thai on 6th is worth the trip out. The owner, Thai herself, has decorated the place with silk fabrics and a large wooden canoe that sits overhead while you dine in the main room! It's beautiful and the food is good overall. The red curry is better than the green by far, and some of the dishes may be bland. But the appetizers are great - especially the crab wontons or the bags of gold. The lettuce cups with ground chicken, vegetables, and chilies is also quite, quite good. The owners also serve Moonstone sake - if you've never tried the lemongrass coconut sake when warm - you don't know what you're missing. We paid for an entire bottle after we tried a few cups. MMMMM. My advice? Find what you really like on the menu and enjoy the ambiance. It's unique and a nice escape from the regular hamster wheel of dining in Tacoma. read more

It was a hot summer day and I was hungry. I did not want to add heat in the apartment by cooking and I had a craving for Thai food. I ordered the Thai Beef Salad and it was exactly what I wanted. The cool salad with fresh herbs and tamarind dressing was very flavorful and delicious. My husband ordered "Swimming Angel", which was basically chicken and spinach with peanut sauce. I had a little taste of the dish and unfortunately found it rather bland. Overall, just like everyone has mentioned, the atmosphere is nice and the staff are friendly. Tucked away in a nondescript strip mall on 6th Ave Silk Thai is a hidden gem and looking at it from the outside you'd never know. As others have said, once you enter the door you're in another world. The food is fresh and good. I find the degree of hotness is not consistent but then again that's true of a lot of Thai places. I'm from Orange county where Asian cuisine is very competitive compared to sunny Tacoma, but after trying out a few Thai places, we settled with this one. Neat atmosphere, nice people, comparable prices, good portion sizes. I particularly like Thai places that don't skimp on the ambiguous "with veggies" description. Silk Thai provides a hefty plethora of veggies in their veggie dishes. The second thing that can be a deal breaker in Thai restaurants is their spring rolls. Silk Thai actually calls their Spring rolls "Garden" or maybe "Salad" rolls because their "spring rolls" are actually egg rolls, which was a sad mistake I made only once. But when you do order the right "Salad" roll--very good, very good peanut sauce. The beer selection is surprisingly good and the mark up on the beer is close to none. read more

I love their black bean and eggplant tofu. I can't believe that this place isn't rated higher. I would drive by this place on my way home and it took every ounce of my willpower to not stop here every day. Their service was amazing (although occasionally inconsistent since since they hire from UPS). The first time I came in I ordered my food as hot as they could make it and a warm Samuel Smith's Brown. They gave me a funny look. 3 months later they would bring me a room temperature beer without asking and they started to give me Thai that was really Thai spicy because they knew I could handle it. It is in a strip mall and not attractive from the outside, but the inside is nice. This is my favorite Thai in western Washington, although it has been 3 years so maybe it is more what other people have said now, but I say give it a chance. read more

Ordered Sweet & Sour, Stir Fry Peppercorn Sirloin, Silk Thai Fried Rice, and salad rolls to go. The employee who took my order over the phone told me it would be ready in 25-30 minutes. When I arrived at the restaurant 30 minutes later my order wasn't ready yet. The place was obviously busy (both the dining room and other take-out orders), so I'm thinking "OK, what's another 5 minutes?" Finally got the food after waiting in the lobby for about 25 minutes (nearly an hour after placing the order)!! Not cool. The food was all very good and the price was about average for Thai restaurants in the area. No white rice was included with the order; whether that was because it needs to be ordered separately, because I had ordered fried rice (and they thought I wouldn't want white rice for the entrees?), or just because they were busy and forgot it I'm not sure. Made a batch on the stove at home and reheated the entrees in the microwave when it was done. I'm not about to give up on this place for one poor experience-- as I said the food was very good. Hopefully the next time I visit they won't be so busy and I can improve my rating! read more

This isn't the best Thai food ever, but it's better than Wild Orchid next door! I went to college down the street and have been coming here for 7 years on and off. Food is consistently fresh and yummy. Service is always odd and uncomfortable but I over look that for the nice interior, eats, and location. I went here last night with my friend and we both got the pad see ew and we both requested 2 stars. Mine had the right amount of spice but my friend's meal made her cry it was so spicy... I tried it too and it was way more spicy than mine :/ I recommend getting no spice if you want to play it safe. I've gotten their curries before and they are always good. My favorite is when they have their asparagus specials, those are to die for. They're really good about refiling your water. As far as drinks go I don't recommend the Thai iced tea, it is way way too sweet. read more

Came here with a girlfriend for dinner. It's lovely inside and very welcoming. Our server was friendly and everything came out promptly and was very tasty. I had the Panang curry and my friend had the soup and lettuce wraps...although she ordered lettuce wraps they actually made her fresh rolls - we didn't say anything as the fresh rolls were just as tasty :) All in all its a nice place with great service and good food. Maybe they thought we'd order it more spicy and that would offset the sweetness? It just wasn't good. All that sweetness made the flavor really off-putting. We ordered Tom Yung Gai (? the coconut soup), green curry, Panang curry, and garlic chicken. I was introduced to Silk Thai many years ago and the food was fantastic - very fresh and the flavors outstanding. I have recently come to work nearby and have been able to frequent them again. I have to admit that over the last year, the food was not as I remembered, but it was still better than several other restaurants I have tried around town. It was just a bit heavy-handed in its sauces for me. That said, more recently I have had two excellent meals. I didn't ask, but am wondering if they changed chefs. I LOVE this place. I'm constantly craving it. I had a really hard time finding a decent thai place in Tacoma, and this is the best one I've found so far. The waitstaff are all incredibly nice. They don't rush you out the door, even when they're closing between lunch and dinner (yes, they do take a break then, so make sure you time your lunch!) Lately I cannot stop ordering the pad see ew. You will order this again!! 9.95 Sweet and Sour-- Carrots, onions, cucumbers, pineapple, bell peppers, and tomatoes in a unique sweet and sour sauce Tofu or chicken 8.95 Shrimp 9.95 Phad Thai-- Thin rice noodles, egg, fresh bean sprouts and ground peanuts Veggies or chicken 8.95 Beef or shrimp 9.95 Jasmine Steamed Rice -- 1.50 The people in my party were ages 3, 6, 11, 29, and 30. It was spiced with a 1 (very mild but we're not ones for spice) and it was something I would order again. The sweet and sour was pretty good too but it wasn't really sweet or sour -- good flavor though. I've seen a lot of complaints about the price but I didn't think it was bad at all. We had two appetizers, three entrees, two servings of rice, and drinks all around and it came out to $60.58 after tax. Seems about average to me. Things that were especially good, in my opinion...Salad rolls, crab wontons, bags of gold, and the cashew chicken. Oh, and the satay. My least favorite was the sweet and sour. It wasn't gross though. I also really love the ambiance! It really reminds me and the kids of Adventure Land at Disneyland. Especially the Indiana Jones ride. lol. They loved it (it was their first time in,) I've seen some review saying it's not for kids. I strongly disagree. My three-year-old was delighted to a see colorful plastic place setting set for her when she sat down. She ordered a shirley temple (as did my six-year-old) and they actually drank their drinks. They hardly ever do at other places. It was different and fun for them. My six-year-old actually requested that we go their for her birthday (which isn't until December! lol). The kids were also impressed with the bathroom (which I did not experience). My eleven-year-old described it as cool, while my three-year-old marked it as creepy...She was born on Halloween and loves creepy things so creepy is good! lol Bottom line -- Service was good / great. Food was great. Ambiance was great. We were seated relatively quickly (it was a pretty full house tonight. Took about 6-8 minutes to be seated). Parking was a little of a hassle. I had to leave the lot and come back. There was one spot open which was fine because I only drive one car ;) Kids had a good time so they behaved (priceless!) and the bill, while on the high side of average, was not shocking. Plus, it could be cheaper. I just felt like eating a variety of food tonight. All-in-all...I will definitely be a repeat customer...I'm thinking lunch tomorrow! :) BTW -- I hesitated to write this review because I really thought I wasn't a fan of Thai food up until I ate here the first time. Being that I haven't eaten at a Thai restaurant that I liked in the past I felt it unfair to say this one is good...maybe it's good because it doesn't taste like Thai? I don't know. I decided to write it anyway because whether it's good because it's really good Thai food or it's good because it isn't Thai food is kind of moot. It's good. I ordered the broccoli beef (4 star) and it was by far the most bland and non-spicy Thai food I've ever had. It wasn't for lack of effort on the spice; the beef was absolutely covered in it. I was actually a little worried that I would regret the 4 star choice. Well, that fear was quickly overcome. The spice was flat and tasted burnt...not even a hint of heat. I felt like the spice was on the food, but not incorporated into the dish. I could look past that if the dish had great flavor without the heat, but no. The sauce tasted like plain, barely thickened broth. Additionally, the beef was completely flavorless. I would give that dish zero stars if possible. The service was outstanding, so I guess there's that. I have had a decent meal here before, but this was so bad that I will never go back. read more

I think I'm gonna have to move this down to a three star as the same issues keep coming up in regards of seating. I don't know what the issue has been lately but every time my boyfriend and I go there we end up being told that "it'll be a few minuets" and then we end up waiting there while other two party groups come in and get seated right away without reservations. After they remember we've been waiting for our seats and we are seated everything else is fine, service is great as well as the food. Silk Thai is probably my favorite Thai food spot in the area. Indochine is great, too, but I just love Silk's curry. The yellow and panang are perfect and I've never had a bad experience here from a service or food standpoint. I would prefer they had beer on tap, but it's really not that big of a deal. The bottle selection they offer is perfectly adequate and their food is not only great, but it's consistently great. My wife really enjoys their pad thai and spring rolls. Fresh spring rolls were great, yummy cilantro. Calamari was cooked perfect and dipping sauce was wonderful. Pineapple fried rice was some of the best I've had.
