My sister-in-law and I went to Silk Thai in Tacoma. We had the nibble platter, cashew chicken and pad kee mao with chicken. I enjoyed the nibble platter, it had a good hodge-podge of things and it came with four dipping sauces. My sister-in-law REALLY liked the cashew chicken. I thought it was good but she thought it was great. I really enjoyed the Pad Kee Mao (spelling?) with chicken. It had good flavor but it could have used more noodles. The service was pretty good and the prices weren't too bad. I didn't care for their Thai iced tea though but that was my only real complaint. I wanted to put 3.5 stars but who knows...maybe my next visit will prompt me to change it to 4 stars. read more

After more than a dozen visits, I feel comfortable writing a review. The service can be hit or miss. At times, the wait staff can make you feel as if you are the only diner in the restaurant, but at other visits I have felt as if I did not exist. The rice, curry and noodle dishes are all above par. On several visits, they have forgot to had spice to make my dish any stars beside one. In addition, the last visit our waitress forgot our tea after being reminded and brought out the wrong rice. I would still recommend Silk Thai for a take out, but not for dining in. I have called in several times and my food is hot and ready to roll when I described on the phone. read more

Overall impression in one word... Plain. Had the spicy green beans for an appetizer. They were limp and to me, it should have been a side dish choice not an appetizer. I had the beef panang curry. I ordered 5 stars for spiciness. It was not spicy at all. The vegetables in the curry were peas and zucchini. I thought they added nothing special to the dish. Flavorless food. My husband had the cashew chicken and he thought that the flavor was not there either. He said we could have cooked better food at home. Oh well. The atmosphere is nice and intimate. I would love to go there again if the food was better. The place is decorated so authentically and the lighting is dim and nice. Too bad the food was not good. read more

A group of us went to Silk Thai to celebrate the graduation of our son and his girlfriend. We each tried a different dish, and everyone raved about the food. This place is the perfect setting for date night. The atmosphere is probably the best in Tacoma. Service was awesome. Nothing bad to say about our server whom was patient and recommended an awesome beer to pair with our food. On the other hand the food was quite disappointing. We started with the ahi rolls which were just meh, nothing special. Our lettuce cups were missing water chestnuts, extremely salty and over seasoned, I wish I just went with the larb but it was in the salad section so I didn't even notice it. The pad thai had barely any bean sprouts, not a trace of egg, and was over seasoned. It was swimming in a half inch deep slurry, but the amount of shrimp definitely was worth it. The duck curry had good flavor but the veggie pairings disappointed and the duck was sparse and not cut well. The first in the group grabbed on piece of duck and as we passed the plate around we realized that was the only chunk of meat in there. Our jasmine rice was over cooked/watered. The pad see ewe was probably the only dish that was 100%. These are all simple mistakes that probably was fault of a new cook or someone was tired. Silk Thai was a pretty good meal, although our dishes were either hit, a miss, or right in the middle. Crab Wontons = delicious (can you go wrong?). Miang Kum = very strange dish and highly discourage you from ordering it. The dish consisted of a stack of spinach leaves and small piles of overly-seasoned dry baby shrimp, sharp red onions, very spicy red peppers, ginger chunks, tiny slices of lime (so tiny they were hard to squeeze but had the peel on), toasted coconut, and peanuts, and a non-memorable dipping sauce. The Eggplant Lover was a pretty tasty dish with a lot of extra veggies and the curry we had was also pretty tasty. If you like it spicy, amp up the stars! I like spice, and a 4-star was not near enough. Service and setting was great! I will likely come back and try a few more dishes. read more

I've been going to Silk Thai for a few years now, off an on. Their food can be a little inconsistent, but I was pleasantly surprised when I returned to them (after about a year hiatus) last month and tried out their red curry. It was great. Since then, I've returned with friends three times and been happy each time. The ambiance inside the restaurant is great, and the space (while small) has been thoughtfully decorated. While the waitstaff are always friendly, service can be a little slow sometimes. If you come in often enough, they will be sure to remember your favorite menu items--and seats! Solid to delicious food and a lovely atmosphere; romantic, dimly-lit tables, great for a date night. I had the chicken pumpkin dish they have on special the other day and thought it was the perfect blend of spice, sweet and not too salty (which many oriental places add too much of, of course). Well, the beginning of my visit wasn't the best but, it was saved by Miguel (one of the servers). My partner and I walked in and stood in the entryway for a minute or so; making eye contact with the man at the counter several times and other people walking by and in the kitchen area. It wasn't until Miguel came by (for the first time), that we were actually welcomed and helped. After we were seated, several people came in the door and were greeted and seated within 30 seconds of entering the entryway. The food was delicious, the atmosphere relaxing, and Miguel was professional and kind. He didn't make us feel dismissed or unnoticed and was quick to help us out. I would recommend the food, the atmosphere, and the service...from Miguel. As for the rest of the people that awkwardly looked at us and then looked away, apathetically, just to go back to their small talk...get it together. You're making the restaurant look bad. This place was marvelous! 2 girlfriends & I went last Friday night and the place was packed with large parties, yet they got us in at a comfortable table in 5-10 minutes. It's not the best and I'm sure if the health department came by to visit they would have a lot of violations. Suki the the owner is a good chef and yes some of her creations are good. Had the most AMAZING dining experience at Silk Thai Café' in Tacoma, We enjoyed the Wonderful service, Fantastic Food, & Awesome variety of foods to try. The atmosphere and decorations visually takes you to Thailand. The group I went with all order different meals to share, the food flavors were fresh, lively and awakened taste buds. This one should be ordered with chicken or shrimp but it was still very tasty. The thai lettuce cup was ok. My dates dish was delicious but I can't remember the name of the entree. The beer we tried from Thailand was pretty tasty and I don't like beer. The highlight was our waitress Ja. Very nice with a great personality. They have delicious food and a well priced lavender beer that was a perfect compliment to the teriyaki chicken plate I ordered. True sticky rice and a delicious salad/dressing combo. Waitress was attentive and polite. It was a little darker than my restaurant preference but not unbearable. Prices were no more expensive than similar spots. Would definitely go again. read more

This is, by far, our favorite Thai restaurant. The house salad with chicken and papaya has the most marvelous dressing... yum. Our favorites are garlic chicken and chicken Pad Thai. We love the coconut rice and actually, just about everything we've tried. The decor of Thai antiquities makes you feel you're sitting in Bangkok and not Tacoma. Excellent food and service. I went there for lunch today. The food was not so great but the service was even worse. From the time I stepped in, the waitress had no smile at all the whole time. I ordered Pad Thai which had way too much Pad Thai sauce. When I made the payment, the waiter got my card, charged it, but then came back to me saying he can't take Amex because it will cost him a dollar more. A co-worker (ex pastry chef) recommended this place after I told her that I had an unreasonable hate for Thai food. Pad Thai, Tom Ka or any of the other staples always turned my stomach and blunted my appetite. Everything I knew about Thai cuisine was coated in the muddled flavors of too much coconut milk, lemon grass and curries with too much heat and no subtlety of flavor. This place was a beautiful surprise. The unassuming building opens up to warm and cozy lighting and beautiful Thai style artwork. I'm woefully ignorant of Thai culture but everything in that place looked the part. The menu was extensive and served a varied and exciting opportunity for new flavors. My coworker recommended spicy green beans so we ordered that pot stickers (because we are boring) Bangkok Boar (me) and Spicy Dragon Noodles (gf). My girlfriend was not thrilled with the noodles. The celery was an overpowering presence, and the licorice undertone (star anise?) was very very prominent. I tasted her dish and found it complex but agreed that those two notes really took center stage. She also thought the dish could do with some more heat, I disagree but I'm a coward. The bangkok boar was everything I had hoped it could be. The sauce was warm, lush and very complex. I found the boar well cooked but I think the cut is a bit too lean for the dish and it could have been helped with a fattier slower cooked cut. The seasoning was incredible, I had never tasted something so delicious at a Thai restaurant. I was distressed because I wasn't sure if I should have gotten the boar or the lamb shank in curry. I now know that I will be able to experience both because I am definitely going back. One final comment on the "heat". Some other posters have complained that it wasn't spicy enough, and my gf agrees, however I wasn't disappointed. I found that the control over the type of heat the kitchen produced was very well tempered. It built slowly, lingered in the mouth and stay warm as long as you kept taking bites. read more

Everything I would expect from good Thai food: fresh, colorful, and spicy. I've eaten here several times; never have been disappointed and always have left feeling refreshed instead of that more typical tired feeling after eating a full meal. I haven't tried any of their wines yet, but their beer selection is unexpectedly good. I recommend pairing a crisp Thai beer with a spicy dish--the two do seem to go well together after our waiter (who was not unpleasant to look at) first recommended the combination. Silk Thai is one of our favorites for takeout. Their Satay is very good, and comes with four skewers. The Red Curry is good, it is a thin consistency, which I prefer. Adding extra stars adds chili flakes, not necessarily flavor. They can give you extra flakes if you like them, so you can split with a friend who is anti heat. Rice is an extra charge, not included with the meal. The Cashew Chicken is differently spiced than a Chinese version, so be prepared if you want that style. The Pad Thai is fishy, but I generally don't care for that dish. Takeout is always prepared carefully. read more
