Pork Fried Rice - should it be grey and rubbery? I gagged when I saw it. Spent $22 so tried to give it a chance. Couldn't finish it.

Never again. Spent $22 on grey, rubbery pork fried rice. Tried to eat it but couldn't down it.

I am surprised I haven't posted a review for Yen Ching yet. Granted it was quite a few years ago when I was last here. But anyway I will go ahead and correct that now. Yen Ching on the Yelp entry calls it an Old School Chinese restaurant while some acquaintances of ours called it a Chinese restaurant your grandmother would take you to. Both descriptions are said with love however. I have now been to Yen Ching twice now and both times I got their Sizzling Rice Soup which was something I had in the 90's some but steadily saw it less and less so to me it's almost like a novelty again. The soup is good and very flavorful! I have also had their Hot and Sour soup and that one is really good also. It's one of my favorite soups at restaurants like these. I spotted a Winter Melon soup also on the menu and want to try it sometime. We did Chinese food for Christmas Eve and Christmas this year (2024) as this passed December was very stressful and we had a broken dishwasher at home. While it was fixed before the holiday we had no bandwidth for making an elaborate meal ourselves so we got two meals from here at Yen Ching with those soups I described above. One meal was for there and another to go. If you come here on Christmas Eve come in the early to mid afternoon as the wait to get seated gets to be very long. We came here around 3:00 p.m. and when we left at 4:30 p.m. there was already an hour wait to be seated while there was no wait at all when we arrived. They were open on Christmas and I imagine they would be equally busy since this is a tradition with a lot of people around this holiday. For our restaurant meal in addition to the Sizzling Rice Soup I got some Chicken Chow Mein and Steve got Szechuan Chicken. Both were very good and despite me saying I snacked all day prior to coming here the Chow Mein was all eaten by the time the meal was over. For our "to go" meal we had that Hot and Sour soup that I mentioned and I got their Garlic Chicken while Steve got Mapo Tofu. Once again another hit meal with Yen Ching and this order gave us the relaxation and chill out we needed for an otherwise stressful December. I really want to go back sooner rather than later and try some more of their dishes. Hopefully not around a big holiday in order to avoid a potentially long wait.

Great food. Pleasant atmosphere. Fantastic service! I thought I left something. The team searched diligently and then called me back. They didn't leave me wondering. Mixed Vegetable, Almond Chicken, Sweet & Sour Chicken, Mongolian Beef, Pork with Vegetables. All so good. And one of the most flavorful egg drop soups imaginable.

    Beautiful wall divider.

Unfortunately, the experience was extremely disappointing. The catfish was paper thin, rubbery, and inedible. The grits were bland and unappetizing. The fried pork chops were greasy & tasted like they had been cooked in old, dirty oil. The banana pudding also did not taste homemade. After spending over $100 and only managing a couple of bites, we decided to request a refund because the food was simply unacceptable. We returned the food, but the store clerks said they couldn't process a refund and were unable to reach the owner. Two days later, the owner contacted us and refused to issue a refund. We truly value supporting small Black-owned businesses, but based on this experience, we will not be returning. Save your time and money.

I couldn't remember the name of the place, but we found it: The Fish Peddler! We must have arrived at a perfect interval because there was a table for two that had just been bussed and ready for us near the large counter in the back where food was collected by servers and presented to hungry patrons at any of the 30-40 tables. Our server was genuinely warm and delightful and guided us to the menu and the on-line beer on tap information. Drinks were ordered and delivered in minutes - just enough time for us to announce our selections: A 3-piece halibut and chips for her, and for me, the albacore tuna with spring greens and gouda cheese on sourdough with a pint of I'm Not Afraid Of Music. It had the lowest alcohol content, and since I was driving, didn't want to push my luck. When our huge white dinner plates arrived - oh - did I mention the amazing jalapeño coleslaw? - we were amazed at the size of the perfectly deep fried halibut - which, on their own, provide a good bite, making only a smitten of tartar sauce necessary because you gotta have tartar sauce with fried fish, after all, right? I picked up one my sandwich haves and removed the toothpick with too much gusto and suffered a small splinter that I couldn't remove until I got home a couple of hours later with the help of a magnifying glass, a tweezer and some masking tape. But I ignored the splinter while I enjoyed my "this is NOT your mom's - or HER mom's - Tuna melt". The perfect balance of the albacore spread with the gouda showing up gloriously in almost every bite, the pillowy and cool greens and tomato slice that balanced the heat from the albacore between the two lightly toasted sourdough was my Valentine's Day gift to my mouth. We were stuffed, but not defeated - we ordered our cheesecake to go, and I get to have the last piece of halibut for a snack later on! It was great getting re-acquainted with This cozy, fun, busy restaurant since our last (and first) visit 3 years ago. My only regret is that for some unknown but surely inexcusable reason, I had waited three years before returning. Won't happen again.

This is a casual place, but the food is quality. We got the fish and chips, which were perfectly crispy. The black cod miso was superb. Very fresh and light and flaky and flavorful. We also got the lobster roll. It definitely rivals a lobster roll from the east coast. The service was great. They took care of everything well. This isn't fancy, but it's just a good seafood place for friends, business or families.

My reply was I was only asking and if you want to be disrespectful I would be leaving. I mentioned that I would most likely post a review about his insulting behavior. Surprisingly he said go ahead. He obviously isn't an owner and cares very little for the business establishment. I would be positive and make the sale after all it's all about customer service and the bottom line. I honestly can say that I am never going back there again. If it was my franchise I would be really upset. No body wants a employee to run off the customers. Times are tough and there no reason to run your customers out and encourage them to post a negative review. It's hard to find workers who care about the core business value. This was a location that I often went to but not anymore. The power of the purse is the only thing that matters. If you treat customers poorly, you're gonna lose business no matter how good the food is and the food is very good but not good enough to put up with a jerk. In the future what I want chowder. I'll buy it at Costco the heck with these clowns at this place.

Most Caribbean spots around Washington lean Jamaican, so finding a place doing proper Puerto Rican dishes felt special. The menu and quality reminded me of what you'd find back on the island, at least pre-pandemic. They had classics like chillo frito, mofongo, and pasteles, and it tasted like homemade small business cooking. Honestly, I thought it was even better than La Isla before the fire that shut that place down. A few pain points. It's far. The restaurant is south of Tacoma near I-5, so it's a bit of a drive whether you're coming from Seattle or even from the airport. It was also cash only when I went, though you could sit inside and eat. Last time I called it sounded like they were still mostly doing the to-go model and hadn't fully gone back to the way it used to operate. I haven't made the trip again yet, but it's still on my list. Also worth saying, after the pandemic when I moved to San Diego, I couldn't find an authentic Puerto Rican spot there either. That made me appreciate this place even more. After the Benito Super Bowl performance I'm definitely craving some Puerto Rican food again. Might have to make the drive soon.
