If you're confused by this review - that's a little of what we felt when we walked into this place...bizarre is the only word that comes to mind from our experience. 1st, we walked in (party of 5 adults and 4 kids) and were immediately recommended to go next door? We asked why, they said they had a few big parties already. We then ask, "is it the same menu?" Which was a no...ummm we didn't come for the place next door?? We then ask how long the wait is for INDO - (30 minutes) and we say we will wait...THEN we ask if we can just sit separately (you know maybe accommodate the larger party thing) and they say it's still 30 minutes...so it's not the big party thing? Idk weird... Then the hostess says, I have to sit you guys next door (it's the same owner) and they will accommodate us with the INDO menu. So we're at a different restaurant now with the same menu? Did a little Yelp search for Calamari and decided to give this spot a try. A small quaint restaurant in the Stadium district in Tacoma. The dim lighting gave a more intimate dining experience. At 7 pm, the restaurant wasn't too busy. A handful of diners and a handful of to-go orders were ready as the workers were slowly wrapping up for the night. I shared a togarashi calamari, salt & pepper tofu, and pad see ew. The calamari had a unique flavor profile with the togarashi dipping sauce. I enjoyed the portion size of the calamari. The salt and pepper tofu had a light breading with a nice crunch. Lastly, the pad see ew was not my favorite. It kind of raised red flags when there is no question on how spicy the you want the noodles. The overall taste of the pad see ew was bland and chili oil didn't help the dish much. The restaurant was cute with a variety of different Asian dishes. The price tag was a little high for my preference. I might come back if I had friends that couldn't decide on a type of food or just wanted to share appetizers. read more

Khao Nam Tod - basically a ginger-forward fried rice served in lettuce cups with herbs - very light and fresh tasting! First time in on a Thursday evening to eat something on our way to somewhere else. Our server was wonderful, super sweet and helpful about making a drink recommendation. And he was right on the mark, Indo makes a really nice old fashioned with an anise syrup that's sweet and fragrant with licorice. The curry chicken and peanut sauce was also very good -- plentifully stuffed with fresh salad greens and jalapenos and a delicate, not spicy curry sauce. Indo is a great spot for a simple filling Vietnamese meal and a delicious cocktail. I used to have a favorite Vietnamese restaurant in Seattle's China Town but it went away durin covid. The good news is I've found it's replacement in Tacoma and even better. The vermicelli here is spectacular to say the least and exactly what I want when I want Vietnamese. It's a very nice new clean restaurant with the kitchen right across from the booths. I found it very cool and comfortable. The food couldn't be fresher since comes right out of kitchen to the table 10 feet awat. The staff is very friendly and helpful answering any questions I had about the menu with precision. It's now my favorite Vietnamese much closer, and safer, than Seattle's Chintown these days. We used to love dining here but the quality has really tanked. While the food tasted fine, three of us (out of five) got wretchedly sick after eating here last night. Our server was terrible and totally killed the experience. He was arrogant, pretentious, and acted like the job was below him while also just being bad at his job. I worked restaurant gigs for many years and honestly don't know how this guy got hired (especially with such a surplus of talented workers right now). The entrees came out slowly, one at a time, with two entrees arriving so late that most everyone else had already finished eating. Our drinks took ages and one of our drinks just never arrived. One member of our party ordered a mocktail that was vile. It cost like $15 or something crazy for lime juice and coconut cream. There wasn't any sweetener added or modifications made to make it a drinkable beverage without the alcohol. Not sure we'll be coming back here anytime soon. A real shame. read more

I got really hungry last time I was in Tacoma and wanted something quick and was lucky that this was the first thing I saw. Their menu has great gluten free labels and the staff seemed to all know about allergens. I got fresh rolls and the vermicelli noodles, but subbed out the beef for tofu since I am vegetarian. She said it came with pork rolls so took those off for me. In hindsight, I would have gotten them on the side for my fiance since they still charged me the same amount. Our takeout was ready in about 10 min, which was great! Next time we will eat in- it's really cool. There is a big fire table and lots of natural light. It seemed busy and bustling, but still organized and not overwhelming. When I opened my noodles, I was concerned that there was gluten on the tofu since it was fried in a batter and had some crumbles on it. I was starving so took a bite and waited 10 min to see how I felt. I ended up being totally fine and was impressed that their batter and topping were gf since they were SO good! The fresh rolls were lovely but not cut, so a little awkward to eat. I also prefer my fresh rolls to be dipped in peanut sauce, and would have ordered the peanut sauce as a side if I had known it came with spicy chili sauce. read more

This was our "go-to" restaurant for several years when Buoy and Yu owned and operated it. When they sold it to the new owners they also gave them their personal recipes. We have tried Indo several times in the last year and have been consistently more and more disappointed with each visit. The new owners obviously have not followed the tried and true recipes. Indo was always packed to capacity, with a waiting line every single night. No more. Sadly, it was one of the only wonderful restaurants in the Tacoma area and now it, too, has joined the ranks of failing eateries. Will not be back...... read more

I attempted to place a takeout order through the restaurant's website, but the online ordering system would not accept my order. I then called the restaurant and was told they would not take the order over the phone either. Instead, I was directed to order through Uber Eats, which would have cost significantly more. I asked to speak with a manager regarding the issue and was told that was not possible. This was not a complicated request. I simply wanted to order food and pick it up myself. I did not have time to drive to the restaurant, place an order in person, and wait 20-30 minutes for it to be prepared. I have been a customer before, and this experience was incredibly frustrating. The restaurant effectively made it impossible to place a standard takeout order unless I paid extra through a third-party service. Very disappointing. read more

Good variety and yummy food. Some of the dishes are a bit sauce-heavy so ask for "light sauce" if that is a concern - they will accommodate. I avoid sugar, so I only find that necessary on the sweeter dishes. My favorite thing is the spring rolls - they are amazing. That said, I've tried a bunch of different menu items and haven't been disappointed. They do a great job with spice here if you ask for the hot end of the scale, and will give you a pepper tray if you want to amp it up even more with chili. Service is *usually* good, but randomly (5% maybe?%) crazy slow for no reason - and maybe only for 1 dish or 1 person's food. Still like this place a lot tho. read more

Indo is my go-to place for authentic Thai food! Everything I've had on the menu is delicious, flavorful, and leaves you full (but wanting more because it's so good)! We've always had good service here, but most recently we were helped by Wesley. He was thoughtful, patient, and had a good knowledge of the menu. Thanks Wesley! We mainly come to Indo for date night because the lighting, music, and decor scream intimacy, but it would be a good place for friends to catch up too! I have never been to Thailand but I would imagine most places look like Indo! (I especially appreciate all the bamboo plants and accessories). Never have I been to a wedding where people raved about the food. Not only did every guest let us know how amazing the food was but they went back for second and third helpings. Indo is our favorite restaurant. I have never had a poor experience here nor have I ever had a subpar dish. The food is cooked with love and the flavor profiles are unmatched and the ambiance of the restaurant is perfect. Kevin and his wife have done an amazing job building off the foundation that was already in place and continuing to establish Indo as a neighborhood staple. I can't recommend this restaurant more. I realize this establishment has 4 plus star reviews, but I just couldn't. What I can say if ambience is very comfortable, not horribly small but cozy. The place by the fire pit is very nice , unless the doors open, esp on a cold and rainy night. I feel our waitperson was extremely sweet and gracious. The food left a lot to be desired by me anyhow. The beer that was supposed to be a hazy wasn't. The salt and pepper tofu was gross, fried tofu with most of the skin off. Not a great flavor. My sister had the teriyaki chicken which was ok. Definitely nothing special. I had a vermicelli bowl which in my opinion was horrible. I had a hard time finding the noodles, which was extremely disappointing. This is not a cheap place so I can say I am beyond disappointed. Will not be a place I will return too. Again this is only my take but it's a sad one! read more

So good! This was the beast meal I've had in a while. The restaurant was super nice and the staff was great too. Very nice atmosphere and family friendly. Plus delicious food! We got the fried calamari as a starter and than had the lettuce wraps, Thai basil chicken and pad Thai it was SO much food definitely good portions and shareable. Everything was delicious and flavorful nothing was bad. I also wanted a beer but had to go get something from the car while my wife ordered the waitress recommended she get me a delicious chile lime cider and it was a really unique and perfect pairing with the food. The staff was very pleasant and patient we had just gotten in town and were catching up with family and stayed near to close and they didn't get upset or pushy. We're appreciated that and made sure to leave when we knew we were the last ones. We're from out of town and definitely will consider coming back when we visit again. read more

My family went here for dinner Sunday evening, 11/2 - there were 7 of us - for my daughter's birthday. We had the best dinner we possibly could have, everything was perfect. Food is delicious, big portions, and there wasn't one thing we didn't love, between the main dishes and appetizers. Most importantly, the staff were excellent. Our waiter was fantastic. At the end of the night we asked a staff member to take our photo, and she went ABOVE with that request - took several, posed us, she seriously made our night. I wish I would have gotten her name! We went outside and decided to take one more in front of the sign, and she came out and offered AGAIN to take our picture. I was very looking forward to trying this fusion Asian restaurant while we were in Tacoma. It had been bookmarked on my Yelp for some time. The atmosphere is really nice. It's intimate and inviting, with rich dark wood and some tables with curtains and cushions. We sat at the somewhat communal front table complete with fire pit (though not on because it was daytime and 80 degrees). The menu is only digital, so don't expect a server to bring you any. The staff were fine, but not the friendliest. They were by no means rude or anything, but they were just kind of there, if that makes sense. The menu is not large and most dishes did have meat, but I was able to sub the chicken for the basil chicken fried rice with tofu, so that was good. That dish by the way was alright but not as flavorful as I had hoped. Husband got the katsu curry with chicken, and he really liked it. It tasted very nice IMO as well (I just tried the potato and carrot in the curry). HOWEVER- it messed with his stomach pretty badly. I don't know why but he thinks it was old or off somehow. We also got the shrimp and chive dumplings which were my favorite part of the meal. They were flavorful and the texture was nice. The sauce was delicious as well.
