We ordered take out. On the plus side our order was ready when they said it would be ready. The atmosphere also seemed very nice. On the minus side the food was pretty pedestrian. There were canned green beans and jalapeno peppers in the Bankok Spicy Noodles. The Phad See Ewe was missing a smokey flavor and had too much cilantro in it. They are also pretty cautious in their 'Hotness' rating. My three star was barely noticeable, my wife's four stars were only mildly spicy. I couldn't be happier to have found this place. Just when I was about to give up on finding really good food at reasonable prices in Tacoma, I wandered into Silk Thai. My boyfriend and I placed an order for take out, but the beautiful and cozy decor is certainly worthy of sitting at a table and staying for a meal. We ordered the Peppercorn Sirloin, Garlic Chicken and Tom Yum Soup. This is not some greasy, generic thai food that tastes the same from one dish to the next. Each dish had it's own identity and charm. My boyfriend and I have both travelled to Southeast Asia and agreed that we were eating authentic, flavorful, bold Thai dishes. Great décor, with tribal canoes, beautiful woodwork and Thai art on the walls. The food is well above average. My family has eaten here on six occasions and food is always very good. My wife loved the shrimp and walnuts, my son the trout and a year latter I'm still craving the spicy green beans! The wait staff is attentive but not hovering and the bathrooms are clean. Silk Thai is a favorite get-together restaurant for my friends and I. The food is very good, the décor is great. I especially like the spicy green beans and the sampler platter from the appetizer menu. I've gone there by myself and simply order the sampler and a glass of wine for my dinner. More than enough, and everything is very good. As for regular dinner, the Larb is very good, as is everything else I have tried. I do wish they had Som Tum though, (Green papaya Salad). It helps to get there early, as you'll get faster service. The place is not very large, so getting there later may mean that you will have to wait for a seat. And some tables can get kind of noisy. read more

I have been back to this place since my original review a few months back. Initially, I had a new server (she couldn't answer some of my questions, but quickly spoke to the more experienced people there), so that was the reason I had originally given it four rather than five stars. Since then, I have noticed that the servers are consistently very knowledgeable. Excellent experience in every way. Read on: I was shocked to read that the average customer rating was not higher, because this place is great. By far, this is the most authentic Thai food I have had in Tacoma. The food is fresh, appropriately seasoned/spice rating is appropriate, and the price is appropriate. I truly love the fact that they have a seasonal menu for appetizers, entrees, and beverages in addition to their standard menu. They are very open about modifying items (e.g. exchanging tofu for entrees containing animal product and adding extra vegetables). The ambience is great especially if you want to go on a romantic date without breaking the bank: authentic and elegant décor, clean, slightly dimmed lights and good music. Items we recommend: Seasonal Asparagus entrees (they have 2: a Vegetarian asparagus and a very spicy Death by Asparagus) and Spicy Fish. We loved their 22 oz. Singha beer, I had not seen the 22 oz. bottle before and thought it was a great value. The servers are knowledgeable and helpful. They make a concerted effort to answer your questions and are very good about offering suggestions. The Pumpkin Curry is terrific! A seasonal specialty, it's the perfect meal for a cool autumn evening. Well-balanced, with plenty of pumpkin. I would highly recommend this to anyone looking for a seasonal favorite. My fellow-diner had the Spicy Thai Wrap, which also was outstanding. A nice array of ingredients and complimentary spices, it was quite refreshing. Service was fast and friendly. Impressive decor--you may feel as if you're on vacation in Thailand. I have eaten at Silk Thai many times over the last six years, and have had good service and great food every time...until today. The server began apologizing for his shortcomings the first time he came to the table, stating they just had a surge of people come in (the restaurant was not packed). He either mis-heard or wrote parts of our order down incorrectly. He brought a to-go soup out as part of the meal. We had to ask for the rice, and that came, family style, with no serving spoon. My food, I ordered a #4 spicy and there was no flavor/heat to it whatsoever, and the chicken was full of gristle and fat. The server continued to be apologetic, even blaming the kitchen staff for the food related issues. He never offered any kind of discount or comp for our troubles. What a disappointment! read more

This used to be one of the main stops for authentic Thai. It's gone down hill considerably and authentic ingredients have slowly been replaced with cheaper alternatives. The last time we went for lunch the food was so bad we paid and left it at the table. The server was polite but didn't offer any sort of compensation for the borderline inedible food. This place has the best yellow curry I've had anywhere. I don't tend to like overly spicy things but my husband loves things very spicy, the spicier the better. They have spiciness on a star rating and he asks for 3-4 stars usually. I jokingly will ask for negative stars and they have usually accommodated me by just adding a little more coconut milk to the sauce and it works out just right and it's so perfect. Their pad thai is excellent and I love their version of a sampler platter. I'd also never had lettuce cups until a friend had ordered some for take out once and those are a nice thing to pick up for a quick and easy bite on the run. I've not had anything here that I haven't loved. The service has always been prompt and friendly, with some servers being so friendly and remembering who you and all the details about who you are and your family and what you like and little things that just make you feel extra special. read more

I have decided that it is not fair to write a restaurant review without visiting the place at least a few times (unless it is really bad!) I have been enjoying Silk Thai for a number of years now. There was a short time when service was lacking a bit and there was another period of time when the food was not consistant. Today, however, and for the last two years I have found both service and food to always be excellent. I have lived and traveled throughout Asia. I love Thai food and have many favorites. I also have experienced both good and bad Thai restaurants, Silk Thai is one of the best. Though the exterior of the restaurant in no way expresses the refined interior or the outstanding food. The Thai inspired interior decoration is very authentic and allows the diner to enjoy the many wood and textile arts of Thailand. The lighting is subdued, but not dark. If you are seated in one of the booths, it can be a great place for an intimate date. Be sure to visit the well appointed and lighted restrooms. Don't let the exterior stop you from going in to this lovely flavor of Thailand. Though I have not eaten everything on the menu, I have tried enough to include Silk Thai on my favorite list of Tacoma restaurants. (and there aren't very many) Most of the items on Silk Thai's "Nibbles" list can be found at most other Thai restaurants. There are a few things that I have found most outstanding. The FRESH SALAD ROLLS are very good and are offered with either chicken or tufu. They are heavily filled and at 4.95 for two, it is a reasonable nibble to start with. At four for 5.95, the CHICKEN SATAY is also very good. I only wish they would also offer beef, pork, shrimp or other varieties. I have enjoyed the KOH SAMUI CALAMARI (6.95), a very well prepared calamari dish, lightly dusted with rice flour and served with a sweet and sour sauce. You might also want to try the THAI LETTEUCE CUP (5.95). This dish is very similar to LARB GAI, one of my favorites. This is a finger food, in which you fill a leaf of iceberg lettuce with a mixture of minced chicken, mushrooms, water chestnuts, garlic, and onions, all of which is mixed with a Silk Thai magic spice. One of the Nibbles that is actually a full meal in it self is the SPICY THAI WRAP. This is a wonderful wrap, made up in a tomatoe basil tortilla, which is filled with chicken, house greens, red onions, tomatoes, sesame, seeds, cilantro and chopped peanuts. It can be dipped into a wonderful spicy Thai drassing. Silk Thai's soup offerings are very similar to other Thai restaurants. The small is more than enough for one person and the large is adequate for four. Their TOM YUM (sm 4.95/lg 7.95) is very good, but my favorite is the TOM KAH GAI (sm 4.95/lg 7.95). A light, but filling soup is theirTHAI WONTON SOUP (sm 4.95/lg 7.95). I doubt that the wontons are in house made, but they are good. I have really enjoyed the salad offerings at Silk Thai. Both their LARB and BEEF SALADS are very good. These are two of my favorite and often my measure for the quality of a Thai restaurant. If you are into really well prepared salads, I strongly suggest that you try the SILK THAI HOUSE SALAD (chicken 7.95/shrimp 9.95). It is a large salad that is tossed with pneapple and mango cubes, cucumbers, red onions, Thai basil, tamarind and lettuce, delicately dressed with a creamy peanut dressing and cilantro. So good! I also like the PAPAYA SALAD (7.95/with sticky rice add another 1.50). This salad is made with shredded green papaya and tossed with a wonderful lime dressing. I haven't yet had the oppurtunity to try the SEAFOOD SALAD, but have dined with friends who have said that it is very good. Prawns, scallops, calamari, and mussels are mixed witha lime dressing, chili peppers, onions, and peppermint. Though this salad will set you back 11.95, it is large, delicious, and a meal in it self. The noodles at Silk Thai have varied in quality. The old stand by, PHAD THAI (chicken 8.95/beef or shrimp 9.95) is not the best I have eaten. In fact, as I think about it I have not found any of the noodle dishes at Silk Thai to be very good. It can be very disappointing, especially for those of you who love noodles. As with the noodles, the rice dishes at Silk Thai are mediocre at best. I do appreciate the fact that in addition to white Jasmine steamed rice, you can order brown rice or sticky rice, which I love. I should also mention that rice is not included with dinner offerings and must be ordered separately. This has come about because the cost of rice is now so high - a fact of life. Now for the main dishes! I really don't know where to start. Silk Thai offers a great variety different delicacies. I have found their seafood and meats to always be fresh and well prepared. Their sauces are tasty and compliment each dish being served. The vegetables are not over cooked, plentiful, crisp and flavorful. You probably won't go wrong with anything you might try. Nice bang for the buck. Atleast for lunch. Like some yelpers, I find myself wishing I could give half stars - as in two and a half. But the quantities relative to the price, and the taste of the food, make me give it three stars, with some reservations. Ordered the "lettuce cups" which is a chicken based dish that you spoon into lettuce. Although reasonably priced at $4.99, it was a bit oily and bland - seemingly lacking in spice and flavor that one would expect from a Thai dish. I was told that they were more of a Chaing Mai influenced dish - less spicy. Ordered the red curry 4 stars and the Bangkok spicy noodles 3 stars. Neither was particularly spicy, but both tasted fine. the red curry was serviceable, and came in a quantity I have come to associate with dinner menus. The bangkok noodles were described as wide rice noodles with a Thai basil gravy sauce. Most of the noodle dishes I get at Thai restaurants come on a plate, this came in a bowl, and could've used some rice to offset the sauce (which the noodles and vegetables were drowning in). Ordered a diet soda which never came, minor inconvenience. So, in keeping with my policy of first time yelping, give the benefit of the doubt to the restaurant. The portions were large, the prices were reasonable, and the food tasted fine, so three stars. If I'm in the area again I will try them again. Or I might try somewhere else. read more

We just left and the food was fine as was our server... But the man at the front door (did not get his name-30 something,) was VERY RUDE! Our son put our name on a wait list and was told 15-20 minutes for a table so because there is NO waiting area, we went to pet store next door for 10 minutes. When we returned he said "We called you twice" and was not going to seat us. The very nice server finally took us to a table after another 10 minutes. He then made a rude, loud comment to her about us! Maybe because we are senior citizens...not sure. But until he's gone, we won't return. read more

We tried Silk Thai again because the green curry was just so tasty, and had a much better experience. We have since been back for the legit dungeness crab wantons many times, and have gotten to know the staff pretty well. I have not seen that one waitress from the first time a went there that left me feeling unwelcome, so I don't know what happened to her but it works for me! We have also learned that you have to specifically request FRESH Thai chili peppers if you want the real deal spiciness. It took some trial and error (not to mention a number of "meh" 5 star curries) but now we've got it down and the staff know we mean business when it comes to stars and chillis and what have you. And hey, I get it, they don't want to make anything too spicy and have it sent back so they play it safe. I can respect that. read more

This place is OK. Not mind blowing, but not terrible either. The restaurant itself is impeccable decorated and has a nice upscale feel to the place. The service was great and our waitress was attentive and friendly. We ordered the crab wontons for appetizers. They were delicious, but the star was the dipping sauce. I could seriously just drink that stuff by itself. The rest of the table had pad thai, Tom Yum soup, and Pad See Ewe. The favorite was the Pad See Ewe. It had perfect balance of flavors and copious amounts of delicious noodles. Next the Pad Thai. It was a lot sweeter than any Pad Thai I've ever had. It was a bit odd. The Tom Yum soup was anything but yum. It was all sweet and no sour. I was just confused eating it; I couldn't decide whether I liked it or not. Overall this place is just OK. Every time I come home visiting from college, my parents know that we will be ordering Silk Thai for dinner that night. It is my FAVORITE place to go when in Tacoma. I've tried many dishes over the years, but my favorite appetizers are the crab wontons and fresh veggie rolls. Favorite entrees are cashew chicken, chicken pad Thai, panang curry with extra coconut milk, or drunken noodles with extra baby corn and mushrooms. It's difficult to "expand" from what I usually order. Their fried rice is amazing !! They serve a good variety of wines and beers which go well with the food and prices are reasonable for the amount that you order. It is fun to go in large groups and have everyone order something different, which allows you to try five or six dishes you may never have ordered for yourself. A must dessert is their coconut ice cream - it just cleanses the palette after some mild - to - extremely hot curry dishes. read more

Our server was pleasant, the service very fast. The decor in this restaurant is gorgeous, we couldn't stop looking around at the statues, gongs, and carvings. We just loved the food from top to bottom. We didn't want the food too spicy on our first visit, we were interested in really trying to taste and remember all the different flavors in Thai food, since we all like to cook. We each tried all the dishes. We were amazed at the balance of flavors and depth of flavors in each dish we tried. We all agreed that this is going to be our new go-to when we want to eat out. The decor in the restaurant transforms where you are which is fun. The food I would categorize as Americanized Thai. Its good but not authentic which works for me because authentic would fry my mouth with heat. Each dish you can dictate the spiciness which is nice. The service seems hit or miss, depending on a language barrier. Overall, I keep going back because the food is good and the portions are large. read more
