What we got instead was an unwelcoming, cold, and often dismissive environment -- one that ultimately failed my child and our family. From Day One, We Were Treated Like Outsiders Right away, we were labeled "former OLG families" in group emails, constantly reminded that we weren't "really" part of the St. Edward community. We paid tuition just like everyone else, but it was clear we weren't seen the same. Leadership That Doesn't Listen The principal, Tina Cruz, was cold and condescending. As a single mother, I often felt judged and ignored. When I voiced concerns, I was met with copy-pasted quotes from the school handbook instead of actual dialogue. Trying to engage with the administration was like talking to a wall. There was never a sense that they cared about our concerns -- only that they wanted us to stop bringing them up. A Lack of Support for Kids with ADHD My child has ADHD, and it was clear the staff had very little understanding or training around it. Instead of working with us to meet my child's needs, the school treated them like a discipline problem. No empathy was shown. They expect all students to conform, regardless of how they learn or what challenges they face. Overuse of Petty Infractions The school hands out behavior infractions for the tiniest things. My child once received one just for making a classmate laugh. The kids are expected to act like silent robots -- there's no room for personality, joy, or normal child behavior. Favoritism and Bias There's a clear culture of favoritism at St. Edward. Certain families -- mostly those who are close with the principal -- are treated much better than others. Their kids seem to avoid consequences that other children receive for the same actions. It's demoralizing to see this kind of inequity, especially in a school that claims to value community and inclusion. We always felt like we were on the outside, being judged instead of welcomed. Overly Strict Spanish Teacher The Spanish teacher is infamously strict and borderline unreasonable. Parents even refer to her as the "tardy police." One-minute delays are treated like major offenses. My child was once scolded for returning late from the bathroom. This teacher seemed more concerned with enforcing rules than building a supportive classroom. Poor Handling of Bullying When my friend's child was bullied, the school had them fill out incident forms--but did nothing meaningful to stop it. The bullying continued, and the response from staff was minimal at best. Even worse, after speaking up, the child felt even more isolated and afraid of retaliation. It was heartbreaking to watch. The school's handling of the situation felt more focused on creating a paper trail than actually protecting the child or addressing the problem. Final Thoughts We came to St. Edward looking for community and care. Instead, we were met with exclusion, indifference, and rigid systems that do not support children who are different. We're no longer at this school -- and we're relieved. But I'm sharing our experience to warn other families: if your child needs compassion, support, or a fair environment, you will not find it here. This was our honest experience as a paying family who was never made to feel like we belonged. I wish someone had warned me before we enrolled. I hope this serves as that warning for you. He wonders why the children who hurt him remain welcomed with open arms, while he was the one punished for simply standing up for himself. That message -- that speaking out leads to being cast aside -- is crushing, and no child should ever feel that way. What hurts even more is knowing that one of the children who called him a slur is the daughter of a teacher who works there. It makes me question what kind of environment truly exists within these walls. My son deserved so much better. Yes, the incident with the staff member's daughter happened over text--but she is the daughter of a teacher who still works at your daycare. That matters. Children often pick up language and attitudes from their home environment. The fact that this child felt comfortable using a racial slur says a lot about what may be normalized around her--and that should raise serious concerns about the values being modeled by your staff. You referred to it as a "disagreement" that took place "outside of school," but calling someone a racial slur is not a disagreement. It's racism. And this wasn't an isolated case. My son was called racial slurs by at least five different children during his time at your daycare. Each time, the response was minimal--typically just a forced apology, and once, a classroom reassignment. No real consequences. No restorative practices. No signs that the deeper issue was taken seriously. The most alarming part is that the last time my son was called a slur, we weren't even notified. We only found out because I went through his tablet where he was talking about it with a friend. When my husband emailed you directly asking how our son would be protected going forward--because he still wanted to attend summer camp and be with his friends--you never responsed. Then suddenly we were told he couldn't attend, even though he'd attended for nearly a decade and we'd never once had issues with timing or enrollment in past years. Let's be honest: this wasn't about a missed deadline. It was about avoiding discomfort. It was easier to remove our son than to address what was happening to him. He wasn't given a proper goodbye. He wasn't offered support. He was quietly pushed out. Sunshine was supposed to be a safe place. As a working parent with 3 young kids, I need a child care place where I trust. I also need convenience where they can pickup kids from school to afterschool care so parents don't need to take time off during midday. I also need flexibility where they can drop off and pickup kids to other extracurricular activities within the plaza such as Kumon, Cal color, Ping Pong, and Music/Piano. Sunshine meets all my expectations. Sunshine really distinguishes itself with their flexibility! When my sons had afterschool activities at Warm Springs or Leitch Elementary such as basketball practice and games, math contest, or chess class; Mr Jeffrey the transportation manager did not hesitate and made extra trip to pick them up. In addition, when my son needed to attend other extra curriculum class 5 mins drive away from Sunshine, Sunshine didn't hesitate to help. I had never thought an affordable afterschool care place can accommodate these additional service!!! Sunshine is very reliable and really makes things easier for working parents. Not everything was perfect. When my kids started preschool at Sunshine, all of them had a rocky start. All felt sick during first week. It was heartbreaking for me. In hindsight, all toddlers go through this journey of catching germs and building up their immunity when interacting with other children. After few months, they were fine. Talking to other parents, this is a challenge for all young kids going to any preschool the first time. There's a huge focus not just on academics which they do a great job with, but also social emotional growth, developing character traits, learning about God and the Bible, and just having fun through it all! The playground is incredible and recently renovated with a Tiny Town and a little garden that the kids help tend to. The snacks are healthy and they try to mix it up. The bathrooms are really clean (weird thing to bring up but says a lot!) as is the whole facility. It's nicely air conditioned in the summertime and each classroom has its own HEPA filter. Doors to get into the lobby and another set of doors to the classrooms are keypad locked so it feels super safe. We loved all the opportunities we got to participate in (mother's/father's day breakfasts, Christmas musical, Halloween/Trunk or Treat, Easter egg hunt, etc). One of our son's favorite activities each Wed was chapel time led by Pastor Doug where he got to sing and dance with the whole school. When it came to COVID, the school always kept us updated on any changes in public health guidance and any exposures. We also really appreciated their approach to discipline which was firm but always loving and respectful. KH and FCC invest so much into the kids and if they expanded their program to elementary school, it would be a no brainer to stay. But alas, our son has aged out and we are sad to leave. If we ever find another teacher half as amazing as Mrs. Rana, who taught our son over the last year+, we will count ourselves lucky.

Whoever initially answered the phone was very warm and I appreciate so much that she actually handed the phone to the toddler teacher Ms Kayla for a more personal update. - since then ms Kayla very transparently and directly told me how my toddler was doing(she's fine and has adjusted just fine, I think I have more anxiety than what actually is lol) I did tell her I wish I'd receive more photos and videos and I was worried it would create a negative interaction between us but instead she said absolutely she can send more pictures and videos. Her demeanor was very kind, but also confident which is what reassures me- as it seems like she knows just what to do. She also told me how she was a mom too and it just made me feel more at ease. She told me when she's working until today so I could meet her/chat with her as I told her I may be picking my toddler up this afternoon instead of my husband - which I thought was very thoughtful and caring of her, as an invitation to get to know her etc. this is how you build rapport (or trust) with another provider and I'm happy and reassured to have had this interaction even just over the phone. I also want to highlight the other day I picked my toddler up and I had no idea what I was doing but one of the teachers from another room (a bigger kid room) helped guide me and was pleasant as well. You can tell they're not just there to do their jobs and get paid, they really care about their kids and also making sure the kids and parents are comfortable. She keeps up with every kid, greeting and saying bye to everyone she comes across. Literally every teacher either of my kids had was fantastic. Every last one we've had is a fantastic combination of caring, disciplined, and passionate at what they do. Even teachers my daughter hasn't had yet know her and have established a relationship so she's comfortable with everyone. And, notably, previous teachers still greet my daughter - and everyone even remembers our older son, who has just finished 3rd grade. The curriculum is top notch as well. We really appreciate how well the school has supported our children in learning their alphabet, counting, and myriad other topics - our oldest is now a top student due in no small part to KinderCare's solid foundation. But it's not just the academic side of things we like: they've been a great partner in developing interpersonal skills and instilling core concepts like sharing, respect, cleaning up, etc. They were also very helpful with potty training and eating balanced meals. They also have loads of educational and outdoor toys that both our kids loved playing with. KinderCare makes things easy in many other ways. One highly underrated area is their hours: I can drop off early enough to make it up to SF but late enough to still pick up - plus they're open so many days of the year, like my wife or I almost never have to take a vacation day due to KinderCare being closed (they're closed pretty close to the holiday schedule typically of an office job - e.g. no 1- or 2-week holidays for them!). Their app makes it easy to keep up on everything - meals, diaper changes/bathroom trips, activities, and even pictures so we can see who our kids have been hanging out with. Even their payments are super easy - you can pay by credit card and put it on autopay. We don't have any more kids but I never hesitate to sing KinderCare's praises to friends with little ones. And I can vouch for the brand - I went to a KinderCare myself decades ago as well!
