Although the value is good, I had a pretty meh experience. My friend and I first split a bowl of the hot and sour soup- this was a v generous portion and was delicious. For my entree, I got the panang noodles and subbed wide rice for thin rice noodles. When the food came out, it was a little off putting bc the noodles were just one big clump sitting in the middle of the curry. It was weird that it wasn't all distributed already and it was pretty goopy. It's also strange to me they don't ask for a spice level. I found my panang to be on the blander side. Bugs. This review is not for the food, decor, or prices. I've been here several times. Food is good, decor is nice, prices are fair. My fiance and I ate there yesterday evening. A giant flying bug bumped right into my face mid-way through dinner (the windows were not open). I don't know what it was, about the size of a quarter. Whatever, it flew low, I killed it, end of story. I'm not going to fault them for something that likely flew in earlier. End of situation. Until a second, different bug that I couldn't define (some type of beetle about the size of a penny) somehow hit me in the face and landed on the table - not a bug with wings FYI. It scurried fast across the table and out of sight. Obviously we were a little grossed out at this point. Our server noticed us acting a little strange from a distance and we told her that a bug just ran across the table. She walked away and I got up to use the restroom. I came back to our table and my fiance said she's not eating any more. Apparently the manager came to our table, she told him the issue, and as that happened the bug in question started crawling up the window our table butted up against. The manager said, "sorry about this," and reached across the table and smashed the bug with his hand - over our food - and walked away. We both decided it was time to head out. We requested our check and paid it. No discount. I'm not the type to go into places and expect a free meal because of an error. However, in my experience (both as a customer and having worked in the industry) it's standard to at least comp something when an issue arises. They did nothing but smash a bug over our plates. Even taking the $6 app off would have acknowledged this was not up to their standard of dining experience AND I wouldn't have written this review. No longer our thai place. read more

Came by for an impromptu Valentine's Day dinner. It's a sleepy-ish location on Milwaukee Ave, but pretty much kitty-corner from one of my other favorite places, Irazu. Walking through the doors, you enter the bar area, fairly small, but there's a bigger dining room in the next room. It's not huge, but it keeps the atmosphere intimate, which works well for us. The staff is nice and service is good. Decor is modern and muted, but definitely helps to set the cozy, intimate vibe. It was nice, they had special Valentine's Day cocktails. They also had cake pops as a departure gift. They were delicious (chocolate orange and moist). Quick note: they have a very big menu and a good selection for vegetarians. The drinks: Champagne Pom - delicious, nice if you want some bubbles Pom Cosmo - super delicious, could drink this all night Lychee Martini - just as lychee martinis come, lychee sweet and strong at the same time Food: Silom Pot Stickers - (fried) way better than expected, could eat these all day long, would totally get them again Prik Pao Fried Rice with Fried Chicken - the fried rice wasn't what I expected and I probably wouldn't get it again (personal palate reasons), but it was pretty good and well executed, the fried chicken was awesome (it's a whole quarter (the dark meat) of fried chicken, super crispy and not like any fried chicken you've ever had Khao Soi - pretty good, not as much depth of flavor as I was hoping for, kind of just standard for coconut curry soup, it was fine, but I'd probably try something else on the menu next time. Coconut Sticky Rice with Mango - way better than expected. the coconut rice came out hot, but was so perfectly executed. The garnish of whipped cream and cherry were unnecessary. There was additional coconut milk if you wanted more, but I don't think it's necessary at all. The mango was good. The combination of rice and mango is what you're really going for. This is hard to find sometimes, but so worth it. TLDR: Definitely worth the visit for some thai food. Their more of a modern take on thai than what I would call full "authentic or ethnic". Discovered this place with Spring Rewards and I gotta say - I'm a fan! It's located by the 606 and is BYOB. Need I say more? You're looking at average Thai food prices - ~$10 or so. The Penang Curry is just slightly lacking in the flavor I am used to. The satay chicken is great because I love peanut sauce! Went here tonight with a friend for some Monday night dinner. I love that its BYOB so we brought our own plum wine, and they charged $2/person as corkage fee. The place was pretty empty on a Monday night which i suppose is expected. We ordered coconut shrimp, some beef pad see ewe and panang curry. The pad see ewe was oversalted for some reason, but the curry had good flavor and coconut shrimp were great. Service was good. Overall, i thought the place was cute, but the food was not anything to write home about. Good option for byob on a weeknight though! read more

I'm kind of addicted to Silom 12 and they have been my go to place for a while! Usually for takeout but the restaurant also has a nice vibe. The apple and lime smoothie is out of this world good, just the right mix of sweet and sour. I usually order one of the curry dishes or ramen dishes which are consistently delicious. Also, I recommend the drunken noodles, a spicy wide noodle dish. My favorite appetizer would be the summer wraps. Whenever I try ramen, curry, or smoothies elsewhere, it's just not as good. This is our go-to Thai place for take out. A) it is walking distance from us and therefore convenient B) the food is consistently good. The menu is far from traditional Thai food and I miss those flavors but Silom12 is solid. Our personal favorites are the red curry, fried tofu, orange chicken, and crab rangoon. Ever since moving away from Lincoln Park, I have sorely missed my go-to Thai place. Since then, I've been searching for a replacement on the West Side, and Silom 12 just may be it! I've dined in and ordered delivery here a handful of times, and I am happy to report that their delivery is served just as piping hot as in their own kitchen. I'm boring when it comes to Thai food and typically go for the pad thai as my main course, and crab rangoon or potstickers for starters. The worst Thai food I have ever had. No joke. I was giving this place a third try after having one decent experience with Massaman Curry and one bad, but never again. The veggie pad Thai didn't have any sauce on it. Or barely did. I actually thought they got the order wrong because it didn't look like Pad Thai or taste like it. But it did have peanuts and a lime! I love Silmon 12, new favorite Thai place for sure! Ther Paht Thai, Suki Yaki, and Green Curry are all top notch. Service is fast and friendly, and when we went on a Sunday night at 7pm we were seated right away. Icing on the cake, this place is BYO and no cork fee! Their portions are HUGE, so feel free to share or just have leftovers. Lately, I've become very familiar with delivery menus, delivery.com, and how to perfectly meet or barely exceed delivery minimums while I try to meet and completely exceed work expectations. I've been working 70 hour weeks at work, and have been ordering delivery quite a bit (and expensing it when I can) so I've eaten an array of cuisines from a variety of restaurants around Chicago. I'll call this phase of mine 'The Gilmore Girls Experience' since I've been eating like them while watching the show (shoutout to Netflix!). I ordered Silom 12 one night as it was highly rated by both delivery.com and Yelp. Disclamer: This is only a review of the food as I did not dine in. But let me tell you, even if it was a mediocre dining experience, I would probably still give Silom 12 four stars because the food was absolutely delicious. I ordered the larb gai, drunken noodles, and a side of sticky rice. The larb gai was by far the show stopper. It had the perfect amount of spice, mint, and chicken. I would suggest eating it with some type of rice (which is why I ordered the sticky rice) to absorb the liquid at the bottom of the bowl - it's so delicious and could be a meal on its own. The drunken noodles were also damn delicious - spicy, beware, but enough vegetables and meat and carbs to keep you full and happy. The portions are also pretty large that they can last two meals. The food alone is the best Thai food I've had in Chicago. Definitely worth actually going to the restaurant, that is, if you're not buried under a ton of work. read more

A huge fan of Thai food but not so much the ambiance of most BYOB Thai places in Chicago, when I heard that Silom12 not only had great food but a stellar atmosphere to boot, I made a reservation right away. I went with 2 girlfriends when the spot was still BYOB so we carted along a few bottles of wine ($3 corkage fee) and were seated right away for our 8 pm res. Here's what I loved about this spot and why I will be back: Atmosphere: Trendy, great lighting, perfect for a casual dinner date or an occasion with friends... I love a place that is multi-purposed... Food: INCREDIBLE... SERIOUSLY. All three of us loved the food at this place. From the complimentary dried shrimp chips and chili sauce that they bring upon seating you to the Thai salad, summer rolls, Tilapia (MUST TRY THIS TILAPIA) and Panang curry that the 3 of us ordered to share, everything was served warm and was so flavorful. Some of the best Thai food I've ever had. Service: Our waiter was outstanding. So helpful, friendly, quick and knowledgeable. Price: Our whole bill for 2 appetizers and 2 entrees was $45 and that was more than enough food for 3 people. I thought the price was VERY reasonable. Everything about this place is awesome. I'm a little sad that it won't be BYOB anymore once they get their liquor license but maybe they'll keep the corkage fee and make it optional? Perhaps I have made you aware of my plight in finding a great Thai delivery place. I had a love affair with Manee Thai til they decided that it was acceptable to regularly make me wait an hour for my food. UNACCEPTABLE. Their gloppy noodles in my tom yum soup just ruined what was my favorite hot and sour broth I'd ever tasted. I just couldn't do it anymore. We'd heard from some friends that Silom was good. We had a menu from some mass papering of our building. Fine. We'll try it. And OHHAPPYDAY it was good. Since they didn't have my beloved tom yum noodle soup (sigh), I went with my noodlishus standby, pad see ew. It was quite good. My husband's panang curry was the standout though. Creamy and just spicy enough, served with the perfect white rice that will make you say, "south beach...whaaaa?", it was comforting and luscious. Seriously. I finished his. The mee krob was great as well.* I love a good mee krob. Additionally, their quoted delivery time of 30-45 minutes was exceeded (25 minutes or so) and they found our door without having to call and make us walk to the street. Bravo, guys. Thanks for making our Sunday the perfect amount of laziness with a side of carbs. It really created a happy place for us. I wish they had online delivery, and I wish they had some tom yum noodle soup on their menu, but really, I think I will find my holy grail item from Silom and make this my go-to Thai food delivery spot. *For whatever reason, their spelling on the items is slightly different than the usual Thai spellings. My girlfriends and I (all 7 of us) found ourselves at Silom on a Saturday night from a lack of planning and a crushed hope of getting a reservation last minute. We were pleasantly surprised the BYOB Gods did not punish us for our poor preparation. We called ahead and were told to arrive at 6:30 pm to ensure all 7 of us could be seated without a reservation. We arrived right on time and were sat at a beautiful long table in the middle of the dining room. The atmosphere is modern/cool, yet welcoming. It took me about 3 minutes to wiggle my way into my seat - the chairs at our table were high with a half circle making up the chair's back and arms - but once I made it in, it was comfortable. The servers were attentive. They immediately opened some of our wine, brought us water and a small pastry dish that we all enjoyed. We ordered two orders of spring rolls for appetizers: one shrimp and one veggie. They were both great. For entrees, we all selected different dishes and no one had complaints, in fact, everyone was very pleased (not an easy feat with 7 ladies) with the exception of one dish being a little too spicy. I ordered the drunken noodles with chicken. I'm a sucker for wide noodles, and these did not disappoint. The spiciness was perfect, not too hot, and the veggies and chicken were great. I would also like to give a shout-out to the waiters. They were exceedingly nice, which goes such a long way with me. My pet peeve is when crabby people are in the service business. If your job relies heavily on interacting with people and customer service, please make sure you can handle your bad day internally. Best Thai food I have ever had. Hands down. I don't even know who I would put in second place near them! You get complimentary crazy Thai ground up shrimp chips with a chili sauce (sounds weird, tastes like manna from heaven). Amazing. Next we started out with the spring rolls. When I order spring rolls I'm pretty much doing it because I know it's healthy and I'm not expecting much, but damn...these spring rolls were money! They were delic and nutrish, and if you wanted to make them un-nutrish they came with this amazing peanut sauce. 2 for 2 Silom 12. I'm excited for my entree. And friends, the entree did not disappoint! I didn't want it to end! I had the Panang Curry, and it was the best curry I have ever had. Period. Loved this restaurant! Just discovered it last Wednesday because it is really close to my office. The place is spotless, really well decorated, modern and minimalistic. The service is as good as an Asian server gets and the food was just amazing!! They start you with complimentary shrimp crisps which are amazing. I had the chicken basil stir fry and it was delicious. My friends dishes were super tasty as well. The location is great and the server told us that this place just opened about 3 weeks ago. WOW. I rarely write restaurant reviews unless I have dined at the establishment at least two times, but I will gladly make an exception for Silom 12. What a gem! Ambiance is welcoming and warm, music a fun and foxy electroinca that is, blessedly, NOT TOO LOUD, hostess smiley and friendly, menu glossy and easy to read, a TON of vegetarian options, and prices were very reasonable for the sexy, high-end experience. The meal itself was absolutely stellar, from the quick delivery to the lovely plating to the freshness of the flavor. I had vegetarian summer wraps which were mellow and easy, and the chicken hot and sour soup which had plenty of smokey sparkle and tasty texture. The crab rangoon was light and silky, not greasy or heavy at all, and the chicken paht thai was a perfect dinner portion. Love it, want more, will be back! read more

BUZZ - Curry (in general) I TRIED - Tom Yum Goong (5/10) - Penang Coconut Curry Beef (10/10) Uh oh! I think Dan Thai has a challenger! And surprisingly, it's not in LA, at least not yet, but from Dan Thai's own backyard. Who knew that in Bucktown, of all places, there would be a Penang Curry that rises to the challenge?! Went here for a birthday. It's BYOB! They have some really interesting drinks on their menu. I was specifically craving any of their lychee cocktails, as 1) I love lychee, 2) I love lychee-anything bubble tea, and 3) I've never had a lychee cocktail! Their food menu was also interesting. Considering this is a Thai place, the back of the menu had like 5 different kinds of Japanese ramen noodles. Who woulda thunk it? Their menu is very big, and they even have vegetarian choices. The place was already predetermined, so I was Yelping to find suggestions, and I was surprised that a specific Chicago Suburbs Community Manager who loves Thai and vegetarian menus has not reviewed this place! TOM YUM I enjoy Thai food, but I don't think I'm fully educated on it yet. I always get either Tom Yum or Tom Kha - extra spicy. Obviously, like Korean places, the spelling can be different, but here you have a choice of Tom Yum clear or creamy. Tom Yum "creamy" sounds like Tom Kha...but then they have a Tom Kar Gai, which fits the description. So...I'm really not sure what's what, but I ordered the Tom Yum Clear - extra spicy. The spice level was perfect! It's sweat inducing, but not tear jerking. See, tear jerking is where I draw the line. To help understand how spicy this was, let me put it in perspective. For me, BW3's Wild is sweat inducing, and Blazin' is tear jerking. So, when I asked for "Extra Spicy" I got the equivalence of Wild. The top layer is basically floating mushrooms - and I love mushrooms! There are a lot of "landmines" in the soup; however, all of them sink to the bottom, so you're pretty safe. Now taste. The seasoning, I'd say, was acceptable, but the flavor was lacking. I don't know how the "creamy" tastes, but clear tastes watery, actually! The spice kept me going, but it was like spicy "Tom Yum flavored" water. I'm thinking Tom Kha might be the way to go here. They brought this out the same time that my curry did, so I only got to finish about 2/3 of it, so that I can move on with my main dish. PENANG CURRY Served in a long boat, with a side of rice. First thing, the sauce is thick! If you dip your spoon in it real fast, it might drip a little, but the spoon would be, essentially, coated in it, which is just the way I like it. The taste of it - very rich in flavor, without being too basil-y. Seasoning is also right on (which they all usually are). Plus, I asked for "extra spicy," and just like the Tom Yum - they got the level PERFECT! The beef was a little chewier than other places, but this almost felt and tasted like pieces of steak. Still, it wasn't rubbery or tough or anything, it was good. The flavor of the curry was just so spot on, I can't even explain it well! The best word to describe it was "rich." Not overpowering on any specific flavor, but very well balanced. Scoop of rice, scoop of curry + beef, and it's eclectic! Last but not least - no land mines! Flavor and seasoning-wise, this and Dan Thai are pretty even. Beef is better here though, and I think the curry itself is a little thicker here, which I also like better. But probably the most important thing...when I say "extra spicy," it's actually as spicy as I want it here. Dan Thai doesn't quite understand my "extra spicy." So, I'm going to have to award the crown to Silom 12! Who knew Bucktown had good Thai?! SILOM #1! That was a great matchup, Silom 12 vs. Dan Thai, but we have our victor! Dan Thai will still remain on my 5-star list, but it will have to live under the shadow of Silom 12. I'm not sure I understand the "12" in its name, but it could be "18956" for all I care. I really couldn't decide between 1 or 2 stars and I don't like giving 1 star or negative reviews in general. That said, the only reasons I opted for two stars are because Silom 12 has a nice clean atmosphere, easy street parking and the server who waited on me with my carry out was very friendly. The food on the other hand was just awful for me. The first red flag? I got into my car with my carry out and not a minute passed before I thought - WHAT is that SMELL? It should be noted that I live 2 minutes from the restaurant so the following can not be blamed on too much time between pick up and dine. I ordered Pad Thai and their spring roll which on the menu is called Por Pia Sod. Por Pia Sod: They serve what is a typical spring roll and pile what seems like canned crap.. errrr.. I mean crab meat on top. This was the source of the unpleasant aroma. If I walked into a sushi restaurant or fish monger and smelled this odiferous scent I would exit stage left immediately. I noticed a piece of spring roll that wasn't covered with the "jumbo lump crab meat" so I tasted it - still very fishy and not much to the inside. The plum sauce seemed off too -overwhelming. I couldn't eat any more than one bite. Pad Thai w/ Tofu + side of peanut sauce: I LOVE peanut sauce and have had it at many o' Thai establishments. This was by far the worst I've ever had. It was scary looking. The oil had separated and gathered on the sides it was lumpy and congealed. The texture even after heating up (it was cold) and stirring didn't improve - it got worse. So much for that. It didn't get better with the Pad Thai. They use thin glass noodles which were so stuck together and chewy that each time I tried to pick some up with my chopsticks the entire mass came up together in a solid block. Not appetizing. The tofu was sparse and flavorless. I didn't find one sprout, no cabbage or lime. Just one big green onion. They ask if you want egg - I said yes. Typically they are scrambled but here I found what looked like a left over piece of a very fried egg. WT H, E, double chopsticks? What a waste. So bad that if I had dined in I would have sent it all back. I ended up throwing it all away. It's a real bummer too because it's so close to home and we are really lacking great Thai places in the city unless you count a more of a fine dining option such as Arun's. Ate dinner here last night and had a great time. It is BYOB which is obviously a major plus. The decor is awesome. The menu had a great selection, pretty much something for everyone. We tried a few apps, both were very good. We both had the Chilean sea bass, while I was on the fence about it, my bf LOVED it. Also we had a desert that was recomm. by our server, unfortunately I don't remember what it was called but it was fantastic!! It started with a K..... The service was wonderful as well. I will def. be back, my only recommendation is don't order seafood if you don't like things too fishy. The fish was a little much for me, but there are plenty of other options. You think the absolutely disgusting thai food found at other WP/Bucktown places is good but did not like this place??? omg I thought did we get a REAL thai place in the hood?!?!!?! So I stopped by tonight and grabbed some take out. The food was DELICIOUS, nicely spiced, fresh and much better than the normal "thai" I am subjected to since leaving the west coast. Just to be clear, they are no longer BYOB. Went today with a bottle of white we bought from across the street only to realize when we sat down that the hostess had given us drink menus as well...this was news to me since I had been here no more than a month ago when they were still BYOB. Now if you bring your own alcohol there is a corkage fee of $10 a bottle for wine and $2 a person if your table is drinking beer. Food is always good, although I'm not a huge fan of the pad thai here. All of their curries are phenomenal, I especially recommend the green basil or panang. My favorite noodle dish has to be the pad woon sen, it is SO GOOD. Some other good noodle dishes are the drunken noodles (they're on the spicier side) and the pad see ewe. The service is also consistently good, not super friendly, but very professional and attentive. Today was especially great because after we found out that they are no longer BYO, I was going to order a glass of wine from them only to realize that I had left my ID and the rest of my wallet at home, DUMB. Our server was nice enough to ask the manager if they could go ahead and open the bottle we brought at a reduced corkage fee since we didn't know about the new alcohol license, so they kindly accommodated us. This place was good...not my favorite Thai place I've ever been to, but I'd consider going again. The service was okay...we were one of three small parties in the restaurant and I still had to flag down a waitress for water. The crab rangoon was fantastic; I might come back just for those. We both got the chicken pad Thai and it was good, but different than what I'm used to. It had a lighter, more lemony favor than normal pad Thai. It also wasn't spicy. If that's up your alley, I would recommend it. For me personally, it wasn't a flavor I was a big fan of. The restaurant itself is very nicely decorated and the menu was pretty extensive! read more

I think this place is a little too slick and modern for me, and as a result the flavors can be a little dumbed down. I prefer my Thai with zero decor and a lot of sour and funk to the food. BUT - that being said I definitely appreciate Silom 12's place in the world. They do very good food across a number of different styles/types - really a pretty large menu. Everything I have had has been between good and very good. They are also open late and deliver in a huge range, right up until closing. They really package all their food for delivery with care, and it is tough to find a place where you can get well made food at 11p at night. read more

Came in to pick up a carry out order and while the place was very nice inside, the value you get is just not there for me. All in all pretty disappointing to pay so much for so little. For a $12 Shrimp Green Basil curry you get 6 medium shrimp For the $8 Banana Wonton dessert you get 3 tiny pieces of banana deep fried in wonton with about 3 tablespoons of ice cream... Also, the size of the veggies in the curry is way too large coupled with the skimpiness on meat just makes it feel like you are drinking curry with a few pieces of meat and a leftover veggie tray dumped in. The veggies are the only thing you end up tasting with this amount of meat so couldn't we at least get nicer sizes? We ordered delivery tonight (Friday). It took about an hour from calling until delivery. Green Curry with Shrimp - 3.5 Pretty good with fresh cut veggies and shrimp. There was a biy of heat. The curry sauce was as thin as water; wish it had at least a little substance to at least sit on top of the sauce and not saturate it. They only provided a small container of rice - definitely not enough for two to share! Beef with Flat Noodle - 5 Probably the most simple dish, and definitely the best dish of the bunch. The beef was tender and the noodles were perfect. Pineapple Fried Rice - 2 The 2 is only for the seafood. It was mostly rubbery calimari, but also had shrimp, octopus and tough pieces of bbq pork. There was also some weird textured stuff (pork?) on top...it resembled cotton candy. Skip it. My companion was so grossed out by the whole dish, I ended up taking the leftovers so they wouldn't go to waste. I tried it again aaaand... the dish was dumped. Tab = $45 before tip. Authentic Thai food in Bucktown!! Excellent service and great food! To have this level of quality all round and they've only been opened two weeks is impressive. I'm hoping these guys will be around for a long time to come. I'm can't wait for my next big hangover so I order wicked yummy thai from them to get me through the #%&*^!! read more
