I've been obsessed with scones/biscuits recently and one weekend morning, finding myself with no…read moreplans for once, I made the trek to Ipswich to Sandpiper, having heard that they had some of the best biscuits in the state. And, well, I won't keep you in suspense but that first bite of the salted honey butter and jam biscuit was transcendental. It was a little crumbly but so chewy and moist, and the jam and honey butter combo was incredible. Indescribable. They have so many pastry options, as well as breakfast sandwiches, but I really had eyes only for the biscuits. Also tried the cheddar scallion biscuit - amazing. I'm running out of adjectives to describe how good these were. The key for super flaky, tender biscuits is using very, very cold butter and not mixing the dough too much. It was cool to watch people baking in the back kitchen. Got the quiche as well. Tasty, with a nice mix of egg and veggies and cheese, with a well-made crust, but next time I would just get more biscuits. Lots of free parking spots in front and nearby. There's little space inside the store, which makes the queue a bit unwieldy, but it does move quickly and it's well worth the wait (and the drive).

The bakery items are the stars of the show, though their gluten free option was one sad small almond cookie. They have brewed coffee, no espresso. They use beans from Portland, ME. The walls are lined with gourmet food products--some local, some not. There is not a lot of space so when there's a queue, it's a mess.

10 "Hell Yeah" stars!! What a find. Let me start by saying I was in line with 2 other couples, both…read moreof whom drove over an hour specifically to come to this bakery. And I understand why. The pastry chef is a genius. He has mastered the ability to balance flavors and keep everything light. Even the savory items are perfection, I had the spinach & feta and ran back to buy 3 more to go. The food is also excellent, not too overpowering, not too salty, just perfect. There is no seating and the plaza is a dump. The benefit is that the cheaper rent helps keep costs down, everything is reasonable

The variety of pastries was honestly overwhelming and it took us a while to decide. We ended up getting a raspberry cube croissant, small pain au chocolat, large almond croissant and the following trompe l'oeils: blueberry, pear, mango, lemon, strawberry and almond. The raspberry cube croissant was one of the most delicious croissants I've ever had. It was flaky and buttery with a light raspberry mousse filling. We're still working our way through the trompe l'oiels, but they've all been delicious so far. The pain au chocolat and almond croissant were kind of bready, with the pain au chocolat having very little chocolate inside, so I'd probably skip those next time. I would definitely recommend getting whatever cube croissant they have as they are so unique and delicious. I now understand why my family drives an hour to get pastries here!

This was a spur of the moment find on our way to Hammond Castle (also well worth a visit). We were…read morehangry and looking for breakfast-ish options and Source Bakery more than hit the spot. Their menu is centered around the almighty biscuit - biscuits/scones are one of my favorite ways to inhale carbs but they can run on the too bread-y side of the spectrum. These were fantastic: delicate crumb, beautiful golden color, and sturdy enough to hold in all the sandwich fillings. I went with the classic breakfast egg sandwich (scrambled egg, cheese, and arugula) and added sausage. This was one of those rare situations where the bread vehicle outshined the fillings. The egg, while nice and fluffy (and tasted like real egg instead of the diluted mix I've had elsewhere), could have used some more seasoning and was begging for a healthy dollop of ketchup or hot sauce. The only thing that came through strongly was the salt crystals on the top of the biscuit. Tried a bite of my husband's chicken salad on a cheddar/onion biscuit and had the same reaction - the biscuit overpowered everything else. Not that I'm complaining. The bakery is on a side street off the busier, more touristy Rogers Street. I had this idea too late but next time I'm in Gloucester, I'd take a biscuit sandwich to the beach area along Western Ave. The cafe itself is very, very cute, with little nooks and crannies everywhere for seating and even a comfy looking couch. Bathroom was clean. We found a parking lot one street over in the other direction.

We had the sausage, goat, cheese, and arugula biscuit sandwich. It was amazing. We also had the miso breakfast sandwich, which was also excellent though it is just served on regular bread, which isn't anything remarkable. We also got a monkey bread which we had gotten before, and it was delicious. They also recommended a sweet hand pie, and we got the apple one. It was also excellent - not too sweet, not heavy, just flaky goodness. This is an absolute five star experience worth every bite of saturated fat, salt, and sugar!!
