Chicken cutlet sandwich (foreground) and steak cutlet sub (background)

What a local gem. This shop had a line out the door and now we know why. The inside is arranged as half little grocer and half deli/bakery counter. The staff are friendly and efficient and some of them seem to be truly very Italian :) We ordered two sandwiches and got to enjoy them outside at one of the two sidewalk tables (no seating inside). - chicken cutlet sandwich: a generous piece of chicken! more like a chicken parm cut than a real cutlet, but no complaints as it was juicy and fresh. lots of cheese. I added pickles which I feel was a necessary addition because the sandwich overall was needing some tang. delicious bread and fresh ingredients! the structure of the sandwich was difficult to maintain as it shortly started sliding around and i lost some toppings to the table. - steak cutlet sub: HUGE! i think the move here is to order one sub and split it with someone else. you'll leave full! this was similar ingredients to the chicken cutlet sandwich, but the cutlet on this was extremely thin. i think both cutlets would be best if they were a thickness somewhere in between the two. the bread on the sub was better than the roll - easier to squish down and contain the toppings. If I lived in town, I'd be here every week. I'd take all my visitors and guests here. Make sure you stop in and see why the locals love it so much!

Popped over here while staying in a local hotel due to the hype and it did not disappoint. Another local store owner was super hyped about their bacon corn chowder and gave us a bunch of recs haha. We ordered the breakfast sandwich, which had the largest egg I'd ever seen. It was pretty skimpy with bacon and I'd probably prefer a different type of bread vs the sesame bun it comes with but they didn't offer other options. A steal for the price and maybe the sausage would have been the move. Loved the wedding cookies though and received some high recommendations for the subs!

"The bread makes the sandwich" they were not kidding here the bread was perfect. Kept together well with all the meats, sauces & hots. Call ahead order for pick up, fast and always good service! Can never go wrong with a classic Italian, extra pickles, topped with hots... chefs kiss, next level CHECK'EM out Gloucester, Ma

The best cannolis in the world

The absolute best Italian deli and bakery you'll ever find. The staff is friendly and so good at what they do, they know most everyone who comes in and they're always friendly, quick and efficient. They have to be really, because the line is always long for a reason! I truly hope nothing about Virgilio's ever changes. Especially the cannolis-best I've EVER had in my life!!

Best meatloaf sandwich I ever had in my life! This places hops at lunch so look over the menu online to narrow your choices down before you go but also be prepared to accept suggestions from the wonderful woman at the counter! I had both the meatloaf and the turkey club sandwiches.. Both were delicious but the meatloaf (I had it with just lettuce, tomato & ketchup, not parmigian) was spectacular! It was so good I stopped by again on the day I was leaving town. Couldn't imagine a better meal for on the road! The sandwich on a roll is plenty big for one person. The sub size would easily feed 2, maybe 3. Also sampled some pastries. The lobster tail., a light and flaky pastry crescent filled with custard, was delicious. The lemon bars were bright and citrusy. The sfogliatelle, the same light and flaky pastry baked around ricotta and orange, was like if phyllo and orange cheesecake met and made a baby. So yummy! Be aware, it's a substantial step up to go in the door and space is tight. There may be a line, but they work quickly and it is absolutely worth the wait. A lot of people come to Gloucester with "eat lobster" on their must-do list. I would add "stop at Virgilio's" to that list!

If I could give this place 100 stars I would. I had a "North Ender" sandwich and added a chicken cutlet. I saw someone suggest it in their review of this place and they were not wrong! Probably the best sandwich i've ever had in my life. My sister had a couple square cheese pizza slices and she loved them. We also left with a box of cannolis to share with friends + lobster tails at the suggestion of the lady behind the counter. Everyone here was incredibly kind here and they seemed like they knew their customers on a personal level. It felt very welcoming being there as if it wasn't my first time. Very casual and comfortable. If you're ever vacationing near Gloucester like I was, this is the perfect spot for a memorable lunch!

West Ender on a roll is to die for. What a treasure this place is. Been hitting this place after the gym for 40 years. So good

Greats sandwiches and cannoli. A few outdoor seats. The sandwiches are really big so they can make two meals or be split with someone else.

Virgillo's is family owned and operated. The food is delicious and baked goods are my granddaughter's favorites! I highly recommend

Good sandwiches, just not as good as the hyped reviews. Different fillings tasted too much alike. Breads not as tasty as expected.

Stopped and got a sandwich to go. Packed with turkey, cheese and all the fixings on a fresh ciabatta bread. So god. Wish we lived closer.

It's a true Italian bakery feel. Lunchtime is going to be busy because people always wanna get their food there and I totally understand. I'm the same exact way!

Run quickly to Sclafani to try almost anything on their menu. Today's special was the premier of…read moretheir chopped Itallian (I think that's it's official name). They'd gotten some coverage on a local news show which probably helped fill today's doors, but I've become a regular and they are always busy--but not too busy to have to wait long. The owners are named Rob and Cassandra, both of whom are trained chefs, which means their food is done so well! They bake their freaking bread fresh every single day, and it's wicked good. The chopped sandwich today was so amazing and was way better than some of the ones I've had which seem to dominate reels today. They had some kind of spicy crunchy garlic mayo which was fantastic and didn't overpower the meats. They don't pre-make these or any sandwiches, each made to order, which is so awesomely old-school. Their quality of deli meat and cheese is really exemplary, not grocery store Boar's Head. They have a great, but modestly sized, selection of imported Italian goods including fantastic olive oil, pastas, conservas like anchovies and even caponata! I also urge you to get a made-to-order cannoli, which was absolutely among the best I've ever had. The generous, sweet ricotta filling was thick, but not dense or cloying; we got pistachio and shared one, which was as strategic as slicing a brownie six ways, in the office, to reduce calories. Anyhow, I'm not on the payroll, nor even related, or I'd be there again right now.
