Actually have not sat down for coffee. But boy, the options in the bakery. Always a treat when you walk by and in. Cakes, pies, cupcakes and everything in between. We use them for all our holiday and special parties. The staff are awesome. And they always make your selections look great with the box and red/white string. Great bakery goods and pork pie. Unfortunately, they are closing after 93 years. They will be missed, but understand why they're closing. Still great! I've gone here for 25+ years - sometimes weekly, sometimes less frequently and it is always excellent. Breakfast is my favorite, but there is a full lunch menu, too. Great coffee. If I want a treat, I will order one of their famous maple square donuts to top things off. The servers are friendly, the portions are generous and the ambiance is low-key. Harvey, Harvey.. honey, you are not *just* a coffee shop. You are the diner I don't deserve. I just want to throw all my money at you, but you're so polite you don't even take it all. Get outta here - you have reasonable prices, good food, AND courteous staff? I wanted eggs benedict, and have always been disappointed about Canadian ham (sorry, eh) so I asked the waitress if I could swap it out for bacon. Without missing a beat, she said yes. But not only did they customize my order but they goddamned delivered. You need to know that bacon was crispy good underneath all that eggy and hollandaise (a more subtle hollandaise, less citrus) heaven. The sauce was a touch denser than I prefer, but easily overlooked. This was still magic. Maybe it's butter. Maybe it's love! Oh and I swiped a piece of my dining companion's steak and it was tender loving good. I could cut it without a steak knife, people. Harvey, I want to grow old with you, but I suppose if I ate here everyday.. I would probably die young. read more

This is a review for the restaurant. Prices are reasonable, food is good, and the service is excellent. I lived in Dover for nearly 10 years and somehow never made it in here...I've been missing out! The food here is very "small New England town". Things aren't flashy, trendy, or gourmet. They are plain and very good. I can't imagine having any complaint about this place. 4 times I have bought pastry and desserts from here, whether for myself or for something to bring to a family member, and 4 times I have been let down. I think the only reason I keep trying is because everyone talks about how great the stuff is, but it's not. And good luck catching them while their open, they give "bakery hours" a new meaning. From gingerbread cookies, to pies, to woopie pies, to a raspberry Danish thing, it's all been bland. Blander than bland. When we ate it we tasted nothing but disappointment. I'm in shock at all the great reviews, awards, and attention this place receives, because I'm so unhappy with every experience and lie their sold down bakery shelves told me. I'm giving Harvey's three stars, but I don't find that to be a bad thing in this case at all. I've grown up eating food from Harvey's. The wheel of desserts that spins around in the display case is probably one of the best things I've ever seen. There are the same group of regulars who will come in to eat here every day. The waitstaff is reliable, and friendly, as is the food. YES, I said the food is friendly, because it puts a big smile on my face. I love that you can get breakfast til three in the afternoon when they close up shop. My husband might actually beat someone over the last maple square out of their bakery. The food comes out very quickly, and we'll spend under $20 for breakfast/lunch for the two of us. The Garrison City Favorite is my breakfast of choice, two eggs (however you'd like them cooked), homefries, toast, and your choice of bacon, ham or sausage. Just simple good breakfast at its best. They also have seasonal specials, I've gotten belgian waffles with peaches and cream before, they were great. My husband likes the cheeseburger club sandwich, and I also like their chicken salad sandwich. Nothing fancy, just tasty, basic food. And I guess that's why they only get three stars for me, they're good at what they do, but while the food is good, I never go, "WOW, that was delicious and different." Apparently Harvey's has award winning pork pie. I'm not much of a pork eater, so I've never had it, but if they're offering it, give it a try. I'm much more likely to order lemon meringue pie :) As a final thought, I wish they were open on Sundays. There's nothing better than a good, basic, Sunday morning breakfast, and I get disappointed that I can't get it here. read more

I'd lived in Dover for a year and half and never gone into Harvey's Coffee Shop despite having walked by it countless times. For some reason, it never registered that it was more than a bakery, but a diner as well. Since bakeries aren't usually my fave, I never went in. Until today. Knowing I wanted to go out for a classic diner breakfast, I yelped local breakfast joints and that is how I discovered that Harvey's is SO much more than just a bakery. I walked in around 9 and was seated immediately. There were a few others scattered around the place, what I'd call "local color" type of people. My waitress came by the table and was an absolute RAY OF SUNSHINE from start to finish. I wish I could remember her name to give her a proper shout out, but it eludes me now. She was slender with a pixie haircut and a HUGE smile. Sunshine. I ordered the Garrison City Favorite with a fruit cup instead of home fries as well as a cup of coffee. Everything was delicious- fresh, perfectly cooked and just what you want a diner breakfast to be. The portion was the perfect size and I love that I could substitute fruit for the potatoes. But that's not the best part. The best part was when my plate arrived and I saw a little nugget of pastry on the plate with my eggs and bacon. It was a little bite-size piece of their cinnamon bun from the bakery. I asked my waitress exactly what it was because it was such a delightful bonus, I wanted to know. She said it's their attempt to get customers to visit the bakery as well and let me tell you- this little marketing ploy is genius because it works. As soon as I was done eating, I marched right over to the bakery and bought myself a cinnamon bun to-go. I'm not really into sweets, but there was something about that particular bun that was delectable. I think it's the frosting. I tasted a hint of almond, or something in it. YUM!!! Also at the bakery, I purchased an individual pork pie. My mom makes the best pork pie, so I have realistic expectation of this particular pork pie. If it blows my mind, I'll be sure to update my review. Anyway, with the food being perfect and the service notably friendly, I can't possibly give Harvey's any less than 5 solid stars. Don't get me wrong, I am a totaly baked good's snob. I am from Portland Oregon by birth and was raised around amazing Bakeries and baked goods and have traveled all over the world and I have never found a better German Choc Cake ever - Evvvvver. And I got there on Christmas Eve at 6am and grabbed the last one and a Coconut Cream Pie and a Choc Cream pie for Xmas dinner and it was litterally the best part of Christmas. Harvey's is the cutest, straight-up olde tyme diner/ bakery!!! And not the fake old-fashioned replicas we're so used to these days; Harvey's is the real effin' deal! Been there for 70 or 80 years! I wanted to move in, it is so charming and homey and welcoming! Or at least pick up the building & move it to Portsmouth so I could visit every day! The food is extremely simple, but delicious. Kind of like eating at a Grandma's house, or my friend said it reminded her of having school lunch! I had a lunch combo which included soup (corn chowder-- very yummy!), two homemade little vienna rolls stuffed with your choice of chicken/ egg/ tuna salad (I had egg!), & a choice of side (fries, potato salad, some other things). It was a lot for just $8 or $9! The fries are frozen but they were fried perfectly, & stayed hot throughout my meal which is kind of rare. Fries tend to cool down super quickly. I like that breakfast is served all day (open-3:30 PM), but lunch starts at 10:30AM so you can have the best of both worlds fairly early on in the day!!! The waitstaff was awesome, efficient & very friendly but not in your face & up your ass! (Which is sometimes just as bad as waitstaff who ignore you!) On the other side lives the bakery-- great selection of cakes, pies, cookies, the usual, plus a large variety of breads both fresh & frozen. Chicken & pork pies were for sale & darn it, why the hell didn't I get one???? I was too full to think about eating one, but now I really want one! I did get two all-butter croissants, woo hoo! I'm a sucker for croissants! I have a feeling Harvey's is going to be in the regular rotation of favorites for our weekly breakfast/ lunch club!!! I'm so happy places like this still exist, and with good reason! loved it. diner at its best..the real deal old school breakfast lunch place..it has a rotating pie case do i need to say more? My friends get the coffee so it must be okay..I repeat i am a starbucks douche so no go for me..i get juice which i love and water..waitress never gives me attitude with water order which is awesome.. I have gotten the benedict.. eggs perfect. blah blah. finger sandwhiches with soup...old school finger rolls with egg salad or tuna or chicken..hello that is awesome..the soup was average. not great but it hit the spot. grilled cheese perfect diner grilled cheese. you can get breakfast or lunch and they never get upset with you. that is priceless to me. and gives me freedom. The bakery is full of whatever you want and tons of variety..cake, pot pies, danishes, cider donuts in fall, blah blah awesomeness i could go on forever. Picked up some sticky buns, cheese Danish and eclairs. The eclairs were good but needed a bit more chocolate for my taste. The cheese Danish needed a little less cream cheesey taste but was very fresh. The sticky buns needed a bit more flavor in the bun itself and not just on top but again were very fresh. I just went to the diner for the first time yesterday and the people there were so nice! The woman who took my order for take out was very friendly and personable and even gave me a piece of pie on the house! Beware, this place is a trap. They lure you in with their convenient bakery up front, with delicious-looking treats on display from donuts to cakes and everything in between. Then you see that they have a whole breakfast area, and think 'wow, this would be a good place to take my significant other for a date, maybe for valentines day or an anniversary.' Then you have such a nice experience that she keeps asking to go back, and the next thing you know you're justifying stopping in all the time, for the excellent donuts or the fancy hot chocolate or even just the comfy atmosphere! Trust me, this makes planning an eventual move out of Dover for a bigger apartment a vastly more complicated affair. All right, I've had my fun. The service is always excellent, the food is great, and the prices are entirely reasonable. 10/10 would recommend. read more
