Charming historic hotel, the closest one you can get to Phillips Exeter Academy (just a 4-5 minute walk). Rooms are on the small side, and you definitely feel like you're in an old historic building; however, the beds are comfortable, heating system is effective without being overly loud or breezy, and the bathrooms are nicely updated. Not much storage for clothes -- no chest of drawers, and the only shelves we could use were in the bathroom. Wi-fi is free but not superfast. There are adequate power outlets throughout the room (on the wall, and also as part of a lamp and an alarm clock). TV service is pretty basic; no premium movie channels or Chromecast ability. Keurig machines are standard, which are a nice touch. No fridge or safe. The lobby and lounge areas are beautiful, as is the attached restaurant, Epoch. Complimentary continental breakfast includes bagels (with a toaster), prepackaged waffles, cereals, pastries, fruit, yogurt, coffee/tea, milk, and a few juices. Coffee was quite good. They routinely put out really good cookies in the afternoon. Front desk staff are friendly and helpful. The first time we stayed here, I felt that some kind of fragrance in the room was making my eyes feel very dry, so I spoke to the front desk ahead of our second stay. They assured me that they use fragrance-free detergent for the sheets, but housekeeping does spray air freshener, so I asked for that not to be done -- and I had no problem this time. Plenty of free parking on the street in front of the hotel, as well as a large lot in the back. 2 Tesla chargers and one ClipperCreek charger (with a J-1772 plug) are available for guests, but it's $25 per charge (presumably no matter how much electricity you use). read more

For what it is, it's a nice little old school inn. They offer a free continental breakfast every day except Sunday, and on sunday they have a decent brunch as well. Free Wifi too. I paid for the European queen, which is basically a smaller hotel room than you'd get at your average modern hotel. The size of the bedroom itself didn't bother me as a solo traveler, but if you're a couple you might want a bigger room. What DID bother me was the immovable glass that was in the shower area of the bathroom that made maneuvering in and out of the shower somewhat difficult, even for someone a bit more petite. Might want to just go with a curtain for that, or even sliding doors. Also the bed is EXTRA FIRM, which if you're a back sleeper probably isn't too bad, but if you're a side sleeper like me or a belly sleeper, it's gonna cause you some problems as I think it fucked up my knees a little bit. All in all, it's a good place, and while I don't regret staying here, I probably won't be back because it's not what I'd like personally in a hotel, but again, this is entirely subjective to my personal tastes and there's nothing bad with the hotel itself. read more

This inn is located in a pretty New England town, Exeter, New Hampshire. I have stayed here for business trips. I liked the decor. The house is beautiful and the staff was helpful. I really had no complaints except there was no chair to match the desk in the room and I had work on my lap top I wanted to get done. Also, the bathroom had no counter, which made it slightly difficult to navigate. I think these are reasonable things to want and need in a hotel room. The restaurant in the hotel was excellent pre-Covid but is just kind of mediocre now. They stopped serving breakfast. I would recommend this hotel but you may need to ask for a chair. This is the worst hotel I've ever stayed at. You think you would be checking into a lovely, historical inn but BEWARE. This is a dump. We checked in, left our luggage for the entire day and came back late in the evening and as we were about to go to bed we saw that our blankets were stained (see picture) and the sheets seemed like they were not clean. We checked the reception to ask what was going on but no one was there! The room is very dusty and the vents of the heater/airconditioner had very thick dust. We didn't bother to turn it on. Also when we came back for the evening, at the lobby and all the way to the 3rd floor, we could smell gas. We alerted front desk and were told that gas is odorless! Hello? Are you kidding? She said what we're smelling is exhaust. So that's supposed to make it better? Do not come to this place. And oh, breakfast is a joke read more

We had a nice stay here on a quiet Sunday night at the end of June. We got a good, last minute, price on Expedia. The building was really beautiful outside. The inside was dated but nice. It is clear that they have done work to try to give rooms a more modern feel despite the age of the Inn. Our 3rd floor room was charming and had character with a gabled window and slanted ceilings. The TV was oddly placed, as was a shelf by the bathroom door. Both things were head bumping hazards but, again, it's an old building and wasn't originally designed with flat screen tvs in mind. The restaurant/bar was closed for our stay but looked like a lovely place to dine. Exeter itself is an interesting little town with a lot of history. We enjoyed strolling through the area and reading the dated house places and historical signs while we walked to dinner at a nearby restaurant. It was a quick ride to Hampton beach area in the morning for our beach day. read more

We had a wonderful stay at the Exeter Inn and highly recommend this place for those who are looking to spend the night in Exeter, or for a few days more. We booked our stay about a month out, and got a crazy good deal on their high class Jacuzzi Suite, the only one in the hotel, and it was absolutely worth it. We rolled into town early and asked the lady at the desk if we could check in, and she said no problem, which was very kind of them to be so accommodating for us. Friendly, personable, helpful, and great staff here. At times overwhelmed because this place gets busy on the weekends and they are probably understaffed like everywhere else, but for us, they were great. The room was huge, the bath was hot and spacious, clean, and extra pillows and blankets available. Make sure to keep the heat on because it gets cold at night, and you want to stay warm. The building is very old, so expect to hear the pipes, plumbing, toilet and things like that, so it's best to keep the door closed if you are sleeping on the rollout like I was. Overall, wonderful experience here, highly recommend, and we enjoyed our stay at the Exeter Inn! read more

Went to Mothers day buffet and I was extremely disappointed. Both coffee urns were empty, food was Luke warm at best. No omelet station. The scrambled eggs were hard and tasteless. We've been here several times in the past and it was fantastic and hard to get a spot. Seemed wide open today. Definitely will need to reconsider before returning. read more

What a lovely inn this was. The inn was built in 1932 and has a beautiful Georgian façade. It is like stepping back in time, but with all the modern amenities of today. Kendra, at the front desk, was so welcoming. She gave each of us a token for a free drink in the bar or restaurant. We were given a Traditional room overlooking the garden as we requested. However, the toilet in the bathroom had a problem. They tried to fix it, but decided that it was not repairable at the moment. Cindy, at the front desk, very graciously offered to move us to a Classic guestroom. This room was considerably larger than the Traditional guest room. It also had a very comfortable king size bed, executive desk, plus a small sitting area with an oversized chair and table with two chairs. We had two closets. The bathroom was very modern with a walk-in shower. They only problem in the shower was it was difficult to regulate the temperature of the water - it would get hot and then cooler. In the morning, my husband had gone out to get some fresh-baked bagels. While he was gone, the fire alarm went off. I have to say it was deafening. Thank goodness I was dressed, so I called the front desk and was told to leave the room immediately and come to the lobby, which I did. The staff checked us off to account for all the guests. The alarm was so loud that we went outside and stood under the portico, as it was raining. Shortly thereafter, the fire department arrived. It seems there was a leak in the roof and the electrical wires got wet and set off the alarm. Once the alarm was silenced they allowed us back in the hotel. All in all, we really enjoyed our stay at the Inn and recommend it as a nice place to stay. read more

Went to a rehearsal dinner here. It was good. The food was really good. However we asked for some food to be packaged and come upstairs with us and that never happened. The rooms are okay but aged. You will likely get a showers that gets so hot you scream and jump out. No mini fridge in rooms and the tvs are not smart TV. The Wi-Fi works "some" of the time. Charming inn and location. We arrived too late to try out the restaurant but enjoyed a drink and sticky toffee cake at the bar (delicious). The room however was plain, rather small (odd because we actually paid for an upgraded King) and surprisingly lacking in the usual amenities - no fridge, broken knob preventing use of heat/ac unit, unscreened windows and only a small tv requiring you sign in your own account for streaming services like Netflix). Breakfast requires some real re-thinking on their part. Several guests were observed simply walking away to find breakfast elsewhere. Inn is very clean with the charm and warmth you expect in a quaint New England town. Bed was super comfortable and the pillows like sleeping on a cloud. Short walk to town made it very convenient. Staff friendly and helpful, especially when the heat was not working properly in our room. Came up immediately to have issue addressed....unfortunately still not work properly when we checked out....whoever was the bartender on Tuesday evening, January 18th was not friendly AT ALL. Seemed to have an attitude when at 9pm (with 3 other guests at the bar) we ordered a drink. She seemed like she just wanted to go home. Linens we're comfy and for an old hotel the walls soundproof. About the rooms. Steer clear of the "cozy European rooms" they're for one person, comfortably. However not if your into small spaces. We got a classic king. The room was still small. My husband almost threw his hands in the air and was about to demand a refund when I reminded him that this is a historical building, that has New England Inn charm. He calmed down. Front desk wasn't too happy that we booked through a third party (ahem booking.com) but hey-prices were cheaper. Nightly knock on the door around 6:00 for cookies. Interesting. Restaurant is pretentious and overpriced. Great ambiance, and I suppose that's what you pay for. Like American Horror Story "Hotel"??? Well this Hotel is haunted. Lights flicker on third floor. Strange satanic symbol appeared on mirror in bathroom. Loud bangs. Strange and putrid odors creeping in and out of room. There are Spirits aplenty and that was just fine with us on Halloween weekend! Stayed here 2/7-2/8 2014. I would stay here again if I had to, but I would not look forward to it. Evening adventures: Had to go outside around 10:00 PM to try again to get a parking space because the town does not allow on-street parking yet the hotel's parking lot was full. Cold night, and not a fun way to spend an evening, just trying to get my car someplace it would not be towed. Staying at a hotel? Really? This problem? It seemed ridiculous to me. Room situations: Tiny, tiny space. Okay, but I am talking wicked tiny. Worse was the mold in the bathroom on the walls and ceiling. Noise situations: The worst was probably the 7:00 AM Saturday vacuuming that had to happen at 7 AM on a Saturday. Food poisoning/allergies situation: No, the worst was the false promise of allergen-free food in the restaurant. One of us has food allergies. Whenever we ask if the allergies can be accommodated, an answer of, "No," is always fine with us. We understand. No problem. It's when a restaurant assures us that, "Oh, yes! We can make you a meal without your allergens!" And then one becomes violently ill as a result? Not cool. False claims about a bill: They said they wouldn't charge for the meal that made one of us ill, but when the credit card bill came yes, they charged the full bill for the meal. I'm not sure what was good about our stay here actually, from start to finish it was pretty horrible. This pretty hotel is quiet and charming in a low-key way. No bells and whistles, but friendly service throughout. Free internet (unsecured). Bed is comfy. Bathroom is large with nice rain showerhead. Our room had no tub. Décor is nice and understated. My only gripe is that whoever installed the wallpaper did a poor job. Almost everywhere you look you can see it peeling. Bar is nice and barman very friendly and helpful. Security seems non-existent. Exterior doors are unlocked at night and you can easily get in without being seen, I never felt unsafe, but some may be bothered by it. Others may find it useful for smuggling bodies out. We should have turned around when we saw the stairs lit up from underneath. C'mon folks, this is the old Exeter Inn, not Spago in Beverly Hills. The service was so so, having waited over 10 minutes to be greeted by a server. The first round of bread was a rationed measly three pieces of slightly stale french/sourdough something-or-other. The meals were even smaller with a gruel of mashed potatoes accompanying a soggy piece of haddock that was cooked plain with no added flavoring. We ordered the slider burger for our child but was delivered an adult burger and charged the adult burger price. Good steak frites though, cooked exactly medium rare as requested. So where was the awesome chef we've heard so much about????? Not sure we'll be returning unless we hear they've dropped their pretentious ways and gotten back to the basics. read more

We had lunch and breakfast at the restaurant, food was pretty good and hit the bar after a wedding we went to. Bartender was super friendly and recommended Dominos for late night food since the kitchen was closed. There is a nice yard in the back with corn hole boards for entertainment. The room itself was interesting, beware of an overpowering smell of mothballs!! Also the layout of the room was super weird, the furniture was too big and took up so much space. This is one of my favorite hotels in the US. Extremely reasonable pricing affords you a level of comfort, congeniality, attentiveness and historic charm that is rare to come by. The hotel is small but just large enough to give you a rich portrait of Exeter life (many local businesses and organizations make use of their gathering spaces). A quick one night stay while we were in the area for a sports event. Beautiful, quaint brick inn on lovely grounds next to Phillips Exeter Academy. Our room was small but clean & comfortable. Bathroom was spacious with a nice walk-in shower. Beds were super comfy. Cookies with turndown. We ended up getting room service as we were exhausted. Speck-wrapped pork tenderloin & flat iron steak from the hotel's Epoch restaurant were both excellent. Perfectly cooked, seasoned & presented....very nice! I needed a room last minute and i am so glad i called here. Luckily they had a cancellation and was able to fit me in. I stayed in a Jr. Queen room and it was amazing. Jr. meaning that it was just the bed, nightstands, tv, and bathroom. That was fine for us caz we dont need a desk. The Bathroom was amazing, so modern and pretty. The bed was like sleeping on a cloud, the sheets and comforter were so soft, and i love down comforters. i hate hotels like best western caz they are so gross so i am so glad this place was nothing like that. The outside is so pretty, i couldnt believe the price for what u got, i would have expected to pay a lot more for this place. it has a real old school feel to it. I didnt experience the bar or dinning room though.... thats why its only 4 stars, didnt want to give the whole 5 without trying everything out. Overall BEAUTIFUL place i would def stay here again. There was a loud banging in the wall next to my bed in room 205. It was a single loud bang that repeated every 40-80 minutes. It woke me up each time. I was able to get back to sleep until the last bang around 5:30 am at which point I went to the receptionist to see what was the matter. She didn't know. She offered for me to move rooms but I was dog tired and was checking out later that morning. I went back to sleep only to be awakened 3 more times by the bang. I didn't sound like a clanking radiator. It sounded like a mallet banging against wood. Whatever it was woke me each time. I suggested they not let anyone sleep in that room until they fix it. Otherwise it is a great room. Lots of charm and tasteful touches to room and bathroom. Other things to be aware of: The hallway can be noisy if people are walking by and talking. The clock was still on EST so was reading 1 hour off and the outlet in the desk lamp don't work unless the lamp is on so recharge your phone on other outlets. The staff was very friendly, the lounge area was very comfortable and close to the stairway. The room rates were reasonable. read more

Lovely hidden jewel. More like an upscale hotel but with the charms of a local inn. Had to stay here overnight due to a storm that prevented me from driving home. The lobby was warm and welcoming. Rooms were well appointed with modern bathrooms but retained the beautiful quaint feeling of an 18th century inn. Nice restaurant downstairs but did not stay long enough to try it. Rooms are very affordable and I booked last minute during a storm and the presidential primaries and still got a good deal. Also seems like it would be nice for vacation or quick weekend getaway. I'm especially fond of the bartender, who is a smart, funny woman who makes everyone feel welcome. And, guess what?!? It's the latest locale of a Hillary sighting. In New Hampshire, you can't spit without hitting a presidential hopeful. Four years ago, I just missed the chance to see the crazy republican guy before he was crazy (does that even narrow it down?) John McCain, but I was especially sorry to have missed Mz. Hillary's appearance. I heard she was warm and engaging, and "prettier than you'd expect." I always stay here when visiting the school if there is any availability and fortunately this time there was at the last minute. Personally, I believe anyone who wants to visit the schools should stay here and it's not expensive than several other places. It has quaint charm and is perfectly clean and administered. Brides beware! While the Inn is historic and very charming, the staff was a mess. We attended a wedding where 95% of the guests were a part of the wedding party. We were told the hotel bar would stay open for wedding guests, and when the bus returned at a reasonable hour, the entire wedding was told we had "missed last call." The bartenders were bummed - they knew they could have made good money considering the entire hotel was a part of this wedding - but the manager wouldn't budge. This was not a legal decision - the bar could have stayed open - but he chose to disappoint a significant portion of his guests and lose business. If this were my wedding and I heard of this happening, I would be SO disappointed. If I owned this hotel and I learned the manager made this decision, I'd be even more upset. Many hotel guests shared experiences at the wedding of the staff somehow botching their visit, and this was before the closed bar incident. What a disappointment for a beautiful property in a quaint town. I honestly hope they can fix these issues, but I have no intention on ever returning. read more

We have not had a vacation for several years so I wanted to take my wife on a nice weekend. I made my reservations at the Exeter Inn 10 days before our stay. We arrived and found a Great looking Inn and was excited to check-in. At our arrival we were met by a person that was nice but it was her first day at the Inn and she could not figure out how to check us in, so I said that we would go into the Epoch Restaurant and have dinner. When we were done with our dinner we were able to check-in. We went up to a room that I was expecting to have two queen size beds and a large room that was shown on the web-site, but when we open the door of the room, it only had one queen bed in a very small room. I went back down to the Front Desk and told the person that the room we have was not the room I reserved. After some nerves fumbling at the computer the person said to me that she was not sure why I was given that room. I asked to be moved to another room and she informed me that they were fully booked and there were no other rooms. Why did I that the time to CALL the Inn and request a room and was told that the room was reserved under my name and the person on the other end of the phone if I was not going to get the room that I wanted. If I wanted that I would have called a chain hotel and pay a much less, but I picked the Exeter Inn because of the pictures in the web-site. The room we had was good and clean read more

This is supposedly the best hotel in town. Not! I walked into the lobby near midnight on 6/22. Natural gas leak. Told the clerk. She said, "I don't smell anything!" They put us in a 3d floor corner room with a king that was too small for a single bed. I had to pick up our suitcases to get them into the room. It smelled like mildew; the roof was leaking above. I politely told the clerk that if she could not find us another room we would be leaving the next day. She found us a nice, spacious room right down the hall that had probably not had its windows open in 3 years. The room smelled like a wet dog. Dust balls under the bed. Could not open windows; no screens & mosquitos. Return next night; blue lights flashing all over street. Officer says "gas leak." I said, "That's what I gold them last night." Don't stay here; it's a disaster (quite literally.) The room I stayed in (Guadalajara Holiday Inn Express) the week before was a luxury resort by comparison. read more

When we checked in, I could sense one of the two people at the front desk looking us over--maybe because we were in casual clothes (jeans/sweats) and most people who stay here--rich people who pay $30-40k/yr for their kids to attend a high school (the nearby Phillips Exeter Academy)--don't usually wear such clothes. As we filled out our info (my car plate), the staff asked for our email (they said it was to contact us in case we left anything behind, or to email us about special offers, or something like that). My boyfriend declined, since he doesn't like getting spam or "offers," esp. from places that he's likely never to go to again (we're in Exeter, NH, remember?). More on that later. The exterior of the inn was typical of an inn--looked like a large, well-maintained house. Inside, the lobby--from the carpeting to the decorative wall/shelf by the restaurant--looked more like an upscale hotel. We took an elevator up to our second floor room, and the character of the hotel changed yet again, into what looked more like a nice apartment building in NYC. Polished brown wood doors open into the rooms. Our room was at the end of the hallway, in something like an alcove. Once inside, the bathroom was on the right and not "down the hall" as described on Expedia, which made me think it was to be shared with another guest. It was actually *in* the room, just on the other side of the bed. Based on others' reviews, I expected the room to be cramped. It wasn't, really. I mean, we had two small rolling suitcases, a bookbag, duffle bag, and one or two other bags, and it was alright. Then again, we put our stuff on the oversized sofa chair and all the surface areas we weren't immediately using. The bed had about 8 pillows on it, which made it look nice, but ultimately proved impractical as we had to toss most of them off (onto the floor; hey, no other space for them). The bed "cover" (more like a heavy comforter in an olive-colored duvet cover) was really soft, but it was too much with the other one (in a white-sheeted duvet cover) underneath it. The bed and blanket were among the most comfortable I've ever experienced. The bathroom is blindingly bright--not hospital white, but immaculate. Until you notice the little things, of course. Like the stray hairs on the shower tiles, or the rust on the door hinges, the dust accumulated on the cotton swabs/balls container, or on the sink, or, most disturbingly, on the room doors' decorative molding. I mean, I'm not OCD about cleanliness, but when a brown door has parts of it that are white with dust, that's when I take issue. When everything else is immaculate, what dust there is becomes really noticeable and off-putting. When a place tries to convey the image of luxury and delivers instead something rough around the edges, it's disappointing and laughable (like when the "luxury" towel so described on a card in the bathroom with a bright red ribbon tied around said towel turned out not to be as soft and fluffy as even my towel at home but as rough as those in motels and, dare I say it, those used in my kitchen to wipe spills on the table. After we checked out and had driven 20 mins to our next destination, I realized that I forgot my phone at the hotel. I called them, and the woman who answered must have been the same one who asked us for our contact info, because she said, in a patronizing tone, "You didn't leave us your contact info." (I wanted to tell her that first, we didn't leave it because we weren't likely to be back there, nothing personal; second, if we had left anyone's email address, it would have been mine, which would have been useless since I wasn't checking my email on the road anyway). I didn't appreciate the staff person's patronizing manner, but the hotel itself was not bad. I should really email them about the cleanliness of the room, because it would have been a great experience otherwise. The inn is usually between $100-150, but we were fortunate enough to get the room for around $80-90 on Expedia (last-minute booking for a Sunday night stay). read more
