Bed bug trying to bite my husband.
    Janicka D.

I thought this was a decent hotel. Until I slept in the bed and was mauled by bed bugs. When my husband and I went to the front desk to inform them they had bed bugs the manager on duty insinuated that we brought them with us. I have never been so insulted in my entire life. I have never experienced bed bugs until staying there. He told us that he had to investigate before returning our money to us. I showed him a video of the bugs in the bed. He stated he has never seen them on the top of the sheets like that. Well, I got bit while I was under the sheets and one was trying to bite my husband as he lay on top of the sheets. He asked us had we been at another hotel before coming there, which we were not. I showed him six of the 12 bites I received. He did nothing to assure us that it would be taken care of. I told him that I just wanted to make sure no one else experienced what I had just experienced. It was one of the most horrifying experiences of my life. Please don't go to this hotel. You don't want to bring bed bugs home with you.

The Silver Gull Motel on a snow-day, on Valentine's Day 2010!

I've stayed at the 'Silver Gull Hotel' twice, and thoroughly enjoyed myself BOTH times! I highly recommend it! The first time I stayed was, by myself, in the room where a scene from the movie 'The Divine Secrets of the YaYa Sisterhood' was filmed. It was in one of the beach-front rooms (which is extra in terms of money, but worth it). I stayed three days and enjoyed every second of it. It's a nice, well-kept beach where people frequently surf, walk their dogs, jog, hunt for treasures with metal detectors, read, sketch in their sketch books, etc. Each of the 4 beach-front rooms have a HUGE balcony. I loved laying out in the lounge chair, bundled in a warm blanket, sipping wine. It's just a beautiful place and, best of all, it's directly next to a gorgeous stone pier. I walked over to the pier, every morning, to have a cup of coffee, stare out at the ocean and listen to the crashing of the waves. Pure poetry. The second time I stayed there was for another retreat, for Valentine's Day (weekend) in 2010. I had another beach-front room, which actually had an extra room attached. I had a great time because it snowed. If you've never seen it snow at the beach, it's a magical experience. If you want the Eastern beach experience, in a cool, laid back town with lots of activities -- or just need to get away from life -- this motel is the place for you. :o)

Love this place! The staff are very friendly and attentive. Love the location. We have the beach, shops and restaurants either right outside our sliding glass door or not too far from the room. We've definitely found our place to stay next year for sure.

This retro hotel is located on the beach and next to a touristy pier in Wrightsville Beach. My fiancé and I went here on the way to Charleston, NC. I hadn't been to Wrightsville Beach before but what we discovered was a beachy town with healthy inhabitants and a quaint feel. I would imagine it's much busier in the summer months but it was quiet and relaxing for us in late fall. The price dropped the day after we stayed there but we got an ocean view room on the 2nd floor. The suite was clean but dated. There are certain rooms which have been renovated. The decor felt like a grandma's beach house but if you're looking for a no frills place this will do. Parking is available under the hotel. Richard (I think) helped us with check in. He was very friendly and lent us a wine key later that night. Price was $ 146 including tax for one night. We would consider returning in the off season for sure.

Please do yourself a favor and stay in one of the four oceanfront rooms here! I was very lucky and scored one with the extra sitting/bedroom recently. I am so glad I found this place! I cannot complain about anything, it's clean and smells good, too! Plus, the view of the beach is amazing! The sleeper sofa in the sitting room has a thick mattress on it and the king in the main room is comfy, too! Please don't let outside appearance deter you, it's well worth the price. Previously, I stayed in an ocean view room with two full beds and I don't regret it. The mattresses are a little old but it wasn't a horrible rest on them. I'm very picky but I definitely will return and I will never stay at Shell Island Resort again. The water does not smell horrid like it does at the $400 per night "resort" down the road. The AC is awesome! I kept having to turn it down because I was so cold. The rooms are entered from inside the establishment so I'd say it's a hotel not a motel. The halls are clean and smell fresh plus they are air conditioned. The rooms smell very fresh and were clean. This is another perk over the "resort". I love that there's a full size fridge here just another one of the better amenities you get here for less money. I can't wait to go back and score an oceanfront room. Registration staff are very pleasant, too! You won't find a better place for the money!

Recently renovated beautifully. The hotel is the best value on the beach. The basic room comes with a kitchen, 2 closets for clothes and one for beach stuff storage, a large bathroom, very comfy new beds, a dining table, flatscreen, free wi fi, private balcony and mine had an amazing view, free parking and a really pretty community outdoor deck on the beach! Super convenient as the Silver Gull is actually on the beach and right by the pier.

(Some people in our group went to Carolina beach last year and they said it felt like a dive bar and Wrightsville Beach was much nicer. ) The sandwich shop next door had decent prepared sandwiches, coffee, and alcohol. We also had a good dinner at Oceanic across the street. The pool was very nice and never very busy. Our rooms were clean and the place was quiet (except for footsteps above). Each suite is individually owned so there was variability in the kitchen set up (e.g., full-sized fridge vs smaller, oven vs toaster oven, high table vs regular table) and decor of some units is more updated than others. Also, my unit had blackout drapes but others didn't. They also had beach chairs, beach towels, and sand toys available to use. WiFi was fast enough to upload pictures to social media but was slow for more data-heavy tasks. Breakfast is available in the lobby starting at 7:30. There are no tables to eat in the lobby but they have trays so that you can take the food back to your room. They had fresh fruit, juices, cold cereal, instant oatmeal, instant grits, packaged pastries, coffee (no decaf), and tea. Taphne and Steven were extremely nice and very helpful. Our reservations were complicated and changed at least twice and they were very accommodating. We booked directly (instead of booking dot com) and Taphne gave us a discount.

The suite had two rooms, bathroom and kitchen. There was an ocean view and a nice balcony with a view of the Atlantic Ocean. Across the street was the Oceanic seafood restaurant, would recommend that to any traveler in the area. The continental breakfast was also quality. The options included boxed cereal, juices, breakfast bars, and fruit. The coffee was hand batched each morning and bags delivered to the rooms. The staff was always friendly in the morning, greeting and advising the people staying!

The units are one bedroom, one bathroom, a kitchenette, small table, couch and small balcony. We have stayed here several times and have always been pleased. Yes, the hotel has been…read moreupdated, however, they do not address complaints regarding house keeping, discriminant employee behaviors at check in or management/front desk behavior. I would not recommend this hotel to anyone seeking to book at Wrightsville Beach, NC. I stayed at this hotel for over a week in 2025. When I had a confirmed booking a week ago, however, I was within the rebooking cancellation range of time. I called the front office, to seek available dates for the time I was in NC and was willing to fill any dates available that the had while I am flexible. I had a confirmed booking the prior week, however, when I called totry and book a new reservation for a few days while in NC, the from desk person said that I was banned from booking due to noise from my previous booking I di online and stated noise complaints from a "service dog" in 2025. That is complete false lie. On my intial booking, I booked my stay and prior to checking in I brought my " service dog" certification to the front desk. A 4.5 Pount Yorkie who is CERTIFIED as a SERIVE DOG. Upon, checking in, the Manager, questioned this, and the first morning I was away from my Yorkie who is CERTFIED in Allergy/Sezuire Detection, the Manager called me and stated a noise complaint. The hotel was mostly empty, however, I addressed this immediatly and thereafter took my Yorkie with me on the beach each day therafter. During my stay, the GM David-? was very discriminant, and called me to let me know that my dog had barked a few times around 11:00 am while I had gone to the store. I immediatly returned and let him come to the room and investigate. I had changed my dog's food prior to my stay and he barked while i was away possibly due to the ingrediants of the new BLUE BUFFALLO food. There after, I took my 4.5 pound Yorkie to the beach with me each day. The GM or Mananger mentioned that it was the housekeeper who mentioned the noise. Housekeeping never even came to my room, however, when I called the front desk to get new sheets related to bugs on my pillowcases, the GM/Manager came to my room and I helped change the sheets after he inspected the house keepers work. When I check out of my room, I placed a THANK YOU card with a $100 tip for the guy General Manager/Manager hoping that he would accept my appreciation and change his judgement of the CHARACTER he ahd of me. Fast forward, I booked a room last week online for a 7 day stay, I had no problems when I called the front desk and spoke with 'Kathy", however when she had to look deeper at what was available today June/15th, 2026, she called me back and stated that I was BANNED as a customer to book any future stay. Probably, the Manager she consulted with while he was working remembered my lasy stay, Which was nothing to be affected to me staying there agian. Total discrimination because the Manager's decision from my previous stay. My room was completely impeccable when I check out of the hotel lasy year,I had no issues except that I needed sheets to replace and called the front dek to change myself. But because the Manager questioned my 'Service dog" he created a scenario/narrative against me. I do not think that their management will continue with this discrimination. I did nothing wrong and when asked about complaints, they have nothing to prove. This was an inside discrimination from the Manager. All of the employees except the Manager, Jeanie and Kathy were awesome. Kathy was awesome lat week when I needed to reschedule until she had to ask her "Manager" about dates available. I have been flexible and told the hotel that I would fill the dates that were open. Total discrimination from the Manager-David if that is his name.

Got checked in quickly and our room was nice and clean. Didn't see anything out of the ordinary or concerning in the room. The pillows were a little too soft for my liking but nothing to get upset over, bed was comfortable otherwise. Breakfast was very good; oatmeal, pancakes, eggs, bacon, sausage, and more. Everything was nice and hot and tasted great very pleased with the breakfast. Staff greeted us each time we entered or exited the lobby. The reason for the 1 star loss: -The elevators smell, I don't know what it is by my wife and I both noticed it every time we got into either elevator, it's not pleasant and we were in a hurry to get out. -When we came back to the hotel on night 2 our toilet was having issues. It wouldn't fully flush, it just very slowly drained down and then kept a really low water level. I called the front desk and told them, I advised them there was nothing in the toilet just water but we needed it looked at as we couldn't use it. They said the guy that could fix it had stepped out and would be back in about an hour. Fast forward 2 hours later and nothing. We call again and are told he didn't come back, the night audit guy could fix it wait for him in a couple hours. The night audit guy never came so I went downstairs. I asked if he was night audit and he said yeah and asked if I was the guy with the toilet issue. I told him yes, he said he had no idea how to fix it but handed me a plunger and said I was welcome to try to fix it myself. Not the best customer service I've had.

Our sleeping room, work area, kitchen, and bathroom were spacious. The shower, WIFI, and AC worked great. The included breakfast was very good, and we enjoyed it on all 3 days of our stay. We do have some improvement opportunities, and the first is a safety issue. In room 120, there were two metal bars protruding out from under the bed that were covered up by a brown bed skirt. On the bathroom side of the bed is a narrow space where you access the bath area. I walked too close to the bed, and a metal bar hit my left shin and caused a bleeding cut. The metal bar was wrapped in black electrician tape, so obviously, the hotel is aware of the hazard, but that tape job did not prevent my injury. We witnessed two occasions where employees were complaining loudly to each other about boss/workplace issues. At my old job, we had a phrase we used -"Onstage/offstage". It meant be careful what you say when you are around the public, and don't behave unprofessionally around your customers. The staff can use some customer skills because half the time we walked by the registration desk, the person on duty never looked at us, acknowledged our presence, and never looked up from their phones.
