Traveling through and found this hidden gem near our hotel. The owner was warm and welcoming, encouraged us to try the stew which was so good. The bbq was tasty and not overly sauced. Looks shady from the curb and all cars outside were white work vehicles so I had a feeling we'd found a great place. They have cute little kid bar stools at the counter my husband, father and myself sat at, comfortable and not too short. The couple running it is very sweet. The wife is the epitome of southern charm and the husband is a rough around the edges grumpy old man (which we loved). I want to say the wife is Tina? She spoke with us about her son who was in the military, both my men are military. They got our order and made it as we ordered, came out right away and was delicious! We got all the sides, sandwiches with slaw and 2 sandwiches to go after we finished our meal. My husband and I are leaving for CA in the next few hours, it was our last meal with his dad, and he offered to pay for us. He went to pay and Ms Moore refused, thanking them both for their service and wished us a safe trip to our new home. So kind, so down to earth and wonderful food. read more

This place has been open for such a long time for a reason. I'm writing this as a Hogtown native, not someone with a BBQ vendetta from the "deep" south or NC. This is a vintager based BBQ joint and not your classic sweet barbecue so it's simply smoked pork. The prices are fair and the food is far from average! I will say though, when I went in to get a to-go order the...wife...perhaps of the owner, maybe? Stared the entire time and even as I was driving away. Like some children of the corn typa stuff. Some of the better barbecue available in Virginia, and that's because it is a North Carolina style barbecue. it is a variation of Eastern NC barbecue, but the sauce is a milder vinegar and pepper version. The slaw is the red Lexington barbecue slaw which gets the red from the ketchup that is added - this is a very typical slaw in the piedmont area of North Carolina. The chopped pork, cooked on site, is advertised as "hickory fired", not pit cooked, as most of the great Eastern NC barbecue still is. I would guess that the hickory fired means it is cooked with gas using hickory chips to get some smokiness in the pig. The meat out of the kitchen is tender, a hint of smokiness, and a touch dry - but additional sauce will cure that. Man, I really do love this place. I own a recording studio about 2 miles from Silver Pig, and I always take my clients here. Great prices, and great BBQ. I always get the pulled pork sandwhich, and hush puppies with honey. MUST GET THE HONEY. What a combo. I then soak the pork in their vinegar based sauce. So yum. So deliciously soggy. The service isn't great, but I think they are just a quiet couple. Not overly kind, which I can appreciate to an extent as well! Will keep coming back! I make a hobby of trying out as many places in my travels as I can. Some places I commit to revisiting, and this makes the very short list. This is a very casual, low key "must try" if you are a BBQ fan. Not only is his specialty worth the trip, but his hush puppies are a delight as well- be forewarned that if you define perfect little round balls as a perfect puppy, you will be disappointed and schooled by his unique and random shapes that allow a wonderfully diverse level of crisp for each little morsel. I need to mention that Jim and his staff are incredibly nice people, and, if you are a fan of Lacrosse, make sure to bring that subject up to him. I was driving to Smith Mountain Lake, looked up local places for BBQ and this place popped up. It is in an old 7-11 building. I drove around back and saw no wood or smokers. Bad sign. I ordered a BBQ sandwich. It was bland, no taste of smoke(no surprise), and was nothing special. Went with two stars since they have managed to stay in business as long as they have. Other than that I would have went with one. I have been eating here since I was a tot. Went a few months ago (hadn't been in years) hoping for a flavor change and or improvement. 11 bucks for a beverage, plate w/ hush puppies, cole slaw and meat w/ cold bun. Now I am a meat and tater eating fool, love my pork and cook a Boston Butt on the smoker almost monthly. The meat is very dry, I am not a fan of their hush puppies ( almost french fry size and crunchy ), cold bun, cole slaw is simply disgusting and the cobbler is mediocre ( which wasn't included in that 11 bucks ). The best part of the meal was my canned Pepsi and the sauce (which also is a weird combo of tomato based along with vinegar based BBQ sauce) that I had to flood everything with, with the exception of the cobbler to get even half of it down. I stopped by McDonald's on the way back to our job site to get a McDouble to fill the void. Sad but true. read more

Best NC style barbeque north of North Carolina. The style is chopped with a very light seasoning of their eastern NC vinegar based sauce. Perfect. Sauce does not kill the pork, and the pork is wonderful. Served on a simple hamburger roll--the bread is there to HOLD the Q, not fight with it. Perfect. A simple place, with excellent simple food. If only I could get all my Northern VA BBQ joint owners to come here and learn how it's done, I would not have to wait for my infrequent weekday trips to Lynchburg. The real deal. A non-anthropomorphic pig is featured on the menu, which is greater in quality than options. Slaw is Lexington-style. Hush puppies are served hot&fresh and with squeezy-bears of HONEY. i think I just got schooled by a guy from San Francisco. Who knew what Lexington Cole Slaw was? I knew it was odd, but I liked it. They serve a decent east Carolina BBQ, an interesting but good coleslaw, odd but good hushpuppies, and a decent peach cobbler. I was raised on this type of food, and I think Silver Pig puts an interesting twist on the normal recipe. Don't be scared of the orange coleslaw....it's good. The hushpuppies are thin and more like frenchfries, not for me, but they weren't bad. BBQ is good. BBQ Sauce is good, but it is geared towards the people who don't know or like east Carolina BBQ Sauce. I like to get take-out and use my own BBQ sauce. If you are in Mad Heights reading this, eat here. It's worth a trip from Lynchburg if this is as close to NC as you will be getting this trip. read more

They provide great food, great service and are a wonderful family. If you are not happy take your money elsewhere. I'm sure most of the regular customers do not participate in social media so your message will fall on deaf ears. The BBQ was probably only moist because of the coleslaw (I got a sandwich), the hushpuppies didn't taste like anything but "crispy," and they don't even refrigerate their drinks! Halfway through my meal I noticed there isn't even a kitchen... Their cobbler was up front under heat lamps, so I'm going to assume the rest of their food gets the same treatment. So- what's the big deal about this place? I certainly was not impressed. "Carolina Barbecue" leaves a lot to be desired both in taste and, in the case of the Silver Pig, variety.. You can have anything on the menu-- as long as its a little boring Wonder Bread hamburger bun with a handful of roasted pig meat on it- little or no sauce and more or less tasteless, except for the vinegar. The sandwiches are served wrapped in waxed paper and plopped on the bare table, no place mat, no nothing. However, if you order a "plate" combo, which includes slaw and beans, you get a paper plate. Drinks are out of cans, although you get refills if you order iced tea. The staff was a bit surly- altho the owner seemed to be friendly enough. All in all a pretty boring joint, and not much to look at at that. Bare mismatched tables and chairs- it looked like the back room at the Goodwill store. I'd look elsewhere for barbecue. read more
