Understanding Dementia. It is that simple. Irina, our RN, was in step with the specialty needs of dementia. Thank you, Irina. All hospice firms try to sell you their services similar to the manner that an HR manager sells a rosy picture to join their company. They all order supplies and equipment. But, what do they know and practice daily? Do they have with 80% of their patients suffering of dementia? We needed to change firms three times because Hospice does not mean dementia and the lack of dementia training made it worse when this time of life is to be or can be, special and easier for the dementia sufferer. Example. The Home health Aid from other companies would change every 2 or 3 visits. This confuses a dementia patient and the HHA does not learn the dementia needs nor were they trained on dementia. Changing to Silverado, we have had the same HHA, evertime and trained on dementia approach and re-direct. Irina, our RN, (we were in Newport Beach) was in step with the dementia specialty needs. From dementia health management to the proper approach to the patient with dementia. Other hospice companies treated our family member like a 1 size fits all, be it cancer hospice, etc. If this is all new to you, dementia needs specialists caregivers. A Hospice firm that has many cancer patients, etc. is not sensitive to the issues you and my family experience for our dementia loved one. Dementia has special needs from approach, how to talk to a dementia patient, to showering, dressing, medication needs, etc. Silverado's Care included important emotional and spiritual needs with visits from dementia specialized clergy and social worker(s) that understand dementia. I thank them too. All made our loved one 100% comfortable without marginalization. Rather validating her and knowing how to do this for dementia sufferers. All the staff are caring and compassionate individuals that understand and speak, dementia. If you family has Hospice needs for Dementia, use Silverado. I had to go through 3 companies to learn the hard way that if they visitors are not trained and certified in dementia, it makes it worse for the patient. It was that bad due to the 1 size fits all methods. If you have experienced Sundowning or shower time issues, then you understand. Those issues will all be reduced or go away with the dementia trained and certified staff at Silverado. They even brought volunteers' that added touch point value. Silverado carried my family during such a long and difficult time with cancer my family dealt with our loved one. I will say this - Do not look further this company and this staff helped us so much please tell them how MUCH we APPRECIATE them if we could come to see them we would my spouse was not sure if we can to see them we could hug and express our gratitude for the love and care they brought to us!! My cousin just passed and the care and support we felt was so NEEDED please tell our bath helper Liz thank you for the care and consideration she had with every visit and our nurse Adriana who would come every week to see us and stayed long hours with us never judged never was impatient so loving and compassionate with us- THANK YOU !!after he passed she came with so much food, gifts and a prayer for us. First the priest was so kind I cannot recall his name but he was a sweet soul but what kind of nurse prays for someone they don't know ? Someone God sent to us when we needed that's who. We are overwhelmed with the love we felt she told us Ohana is important and all that mattered in this life and it was so right. I am overwhelmed with emotion because for staff to be this kind and understanding is not seen not even in hospitals my family works in another hospice and said they don't see this it is a rarity and hardly ever happens. She gave us so much to eat and love sat with us for 3 to 4 hours and texts us days after he died to make sure we are okay. We didn't expect this - even when it was a hard case with losing him and a family issue there were many and not once she didn't judge she prayed she brought patience and a prayer from her culture to help us with his spirit to pass, with some troubles we had and gave us relief. There's so much hardness and pain out here in hospice a hard time for all families but whatever Silverado has done with this staff you are making a world of difference and people like Liz and Adriana God bless you for what you do !! James K. Norco, CA Updated - 9/6/2011 I was against hospice taking care of my mom right from the start. However, when I took her in for her last checkup, her doctor recommended Silverado Hospice. Finally after hearing all the wonderful things they were going to do for her I was convinced that it was the right way to go to make her last days as comfortable and as pain free as possible. Silverado Hospice promised dying process with dignity and comfort. Instead my mom experienced a great deal of pain and suffering as a result of one inexperienced nurse. I watched my mom suffer an entire night during her shift. The dying process was a nightmare! The images of my mom's chest rising and caving in, her desperate struggles to breathe with a mouth so wide open that must have hurt her jaws, gagging and choking on morphine and her facial expressions from uncontrolled pain are permanently burned into my memory. Thanks to the empty promises of Silverado I felt no comfort whatsoever. I am sure my mom didn't either! How could she! I watched her suffer all night long. I know nothing will undo that night and no apologies would ever take away the suffering she endured. But I do know that a dying person need not suffer more because of an inexperienced, improperly trained, incompetent and indecisive nurse. That is just inexcusable! I am real disappointed at Silverado and would not recommend them to anyone. I feel hurt, angry and heart broken because they made promises they could not deliver. However, I have to admit there were two wonderful nurses who went beyond their job duties to care for my mom. I would forever be grateful to them. For those of you looking for hospice services please do your homework and know what you are getting into. Save yourself and your loved one from much unnecessary suffering. Ask about the qualifications of the nurses, their hands-on experience with dying process and the extent and availability of the support provided. Most importantly learn all you can about dying process to determine what is normal! read more

I used to think hospice provided peace, comfort and care to terminally ill people and their families and focused on keeping a dying patient as comfortable and pain-free as possible. Unfortunately my experience has proven otherwise. My mother did not get the care and attention she needed! My family did not get the emotional support and comfort they needed. My mom's first night under the care of Silverado Hospice was a nightmare. She suffered so much throughout the night that I had to leave her room not to hear the disturbing sounds she was making. It was the most horrible night of my life watching her suffer like that and not be able to do anything. After my experience with this hospice I would think twice if I ever have to consider a hospice care in future god forbid. If you HAVE to use hospice make sure you are knowledgeable about the standards of care and services your loved one is entitled to so that you will know better what to say and how to get the care that is needed. Most importantly find out how well they are staffed and managed. read more

We had the worst experience with Silverado Hospice Care in Orange County be wise NEVER use Silverado Hospice for your loved one ever. My dear relative suffered severe pain, tried desperately to breathe as her entire chest would cave in with each breath gagged all night, made loud choking sounds and the nurse did not do a damn thing just stand and look. This was a horrific way for someone to die I'm against hospice Management the nurse your 24-hour call assistance no good my god and you people call your self's a Professional? SHAME ON YOU people. You need more training how could you live with your self's? You guy's have a staff with major attitude's and behavior even management is unprofessional. I found out from a dear friend she was on hospice. I was worried about her but I have seen different hospices and only heard of Silverado. Her family and I speak so highly of this service the Priest was so kind and Ariana her nurse was so kind she would call her often multiple times a day and her nurse would always answer and come. Silvardo cared (if you can call it that) for my aunt during her last week of life. Their staff was so inexperienced and so inefficient. They gave my aunt so much morphine that she didn't even last few days in their care. This was the first time I experienced hospice service in person and it would be the last time for me. I would never recommend hospice to anyone and most definitely not Silverado. I would give them one star but it won't allow me. read more
